Grounds: Barn & Pastures

[Kolyander]

One of the areas on the grounds Professor Paton encourages students to get comfortable visiting is the barns, with the connecting pastures nearby. The barn is conveniently located by the meadow clearing in which Care of Magical Creatures lessons are held when the weather is good. Within the barn an array of magical creatures can be located, ranging from flobberworms to the winged horses and hippogriffs to everything in between; magical and mundane alike. This is also where specially approved pets are housed during the school term.

The inside of the barn is spacious in order for the creatures to feel most comfortable. Each has their own stall specially designed for them. Most animals within the barn or pastures are rated X, XX, or XXX. Some animals reside in stalls, others are in coops or cubbies, some are in the loft above your head, and some are just regular mundane barn creatures. Each area is magically expanded inside to give the creature(s) maximum comfort and enough room should they need it. Please remember your skill level, year, and familiarity around animals when visiting the Barn and Pastures. If you have special permission to have a non-traditional pet, this is where it will stay during the school term.

Kneazles, here he came!!!

Or… he would get there eventually since Paul was being such a slowpoke.

Without a word, he lagged slightly to allow his bestie to get a step or two ahead of him. Then, he placed a palm each on Paul’s shoulders in an attempt to accelerate his footsteps. “The kneazles don’t like to be kept waiting, Paul!” Idris might be a tad impatient to see the furry creatures but that didn’t mean he was mad at the other boy for delaying the visit to them. “I know you secretly love them. It’s okay to admit it since I promise not to tell a soul.” His voice was now full of laughter threatening to escape. “You do not get to be so good with Nes and not love him and his kind.” Yep, Idris Ace Grunt was all knowing when it came to this Hufflepuff!

“Come on. We’re almost to the Barn.” Cue stronger attempts at pushing!

What was with this boy? Paul thought. Could he not keep his hands to himself? He agreed to go for a walk and see the kneazles. But this pushing was overkill. "Okay, okay, I got it! You can keep your hands off me!" Paul said. It gave him the shivers being touched. He couldn't explain why, but pushing him off felt wrong, especially if it stopped his laughing. So Paul stopped to sigh, "Here, happy?" He had taken Idris' wrist to hold so they could run together over to the pastures which were now clear for them to see.

Paul's eyes then shifted with seeing that indeed there weren't many people if any in their sight. Love. "I..." Love... that was hard to talk about especially in front of Idris. "If that's what you want to think." He considered acknowledging it.

"Well... I don't know anyone who could hate them... hey, look, there's your babies." He pointed out the area where the seven Kneazles. Looking puffy and... cute as ever. Something he tried not to admit. "Doesn't Aphrodite look more chunky than usual?" Especially in the mid section. He looked to see Idris' reaction.

Sometimes he thought the only topics he’d find insulting were harsh words about his family {and that included Nesquik) and about his personality. The latter, however, would only be hurtful if it came from Paul; Id cared very much about what Paul thought of him. Grinning, he dropped his hands then bounded back in step with the Hufflepuff. “As you wish.” But it wasn’t as though Paul decided to continue being a slowpoke for the next thing the Gryffindor knew was that he had seized his wrist and they were off at a run. It helped that Id had grown considerably over the past summer so his long legs helped him to keep up {though there was the threat of him overtaking Paul}.

“It’s what I KNOW!” Laughing, because he was even giddier on happiness now that he was with the kneazles AND with Paul, he nudged the other boy before looking in the direction of ‘his’ babies. “Come on, let’s get closer.” As Paul was still holding his wrist, he tugged at their hands. All the while, Id was surveying Aphrodite. “She does look…” He halted abruptly, his face lighting up dramatically. “You don’t think…? Baby kneazles!”

Once they reached the fences, he did drop Idris hand to grip the fences. He was like a shaken soda can with their excitement getting the best of them. Which seemed to relax that barrier Paul worked so hard to keep up around others.

Id would say that Paul had been much salty over the fact but the Gryffindor had taken it into stride as usual. How? By continuing to be bubbly to match {and in some cases, outdo} Paul’s grumpiness. Now that they were this close to the adorable Kneazles, Id could not resist the child-like excitement overpowering him. He clutched at the fence and actually did a couple of jumps in place. “I’m never getting over how cute they are!”

Id shook his head. “They’ll never be scared of us! Why would you think that? I would cry if that happened.” Didn’t Paul know that Kneazles were so loving despite their classification by the Ministry? He loved Paul for looking out for the fur babies’ well being - and theirs, however. That was prime example of the good Id saw in Paul on a daily basis. “You know,’’ he began as he placed his hand in Paul’s. “If you wanted to continue holding my hand, you just needed to say so.” Batting his lashes playfully, he stepped safely over the fences. “I do! Here they are.” The Little Lion Man fished a packet of Nes’ treats {there was still plenty left for his own furbby} from his pocket. No sooner did he do this that the Kneazles began to crowd him; it clearly was due to the rustling of the packet which always seemed to get any cat’s or kneazle’s attention. Id looked close to happy tears as two tried to climb his trouser leg as yet another nuzzled his other. “Look, Paul! They love me more than ever!”

Cue him flopping himself in a sitting position among the tiny cluster so he could get up close and personal with each of them!

Yep, here it was. The bit that got Idris lighting up more than a firefly. Paul could've rolled his eyes at this, but he couldn't. He didn't even want to. But he did want Idris to stop rubbing in his face about this insinuation from holding his hand. His face turned red at that. "Stop doing that, it makes me think you got something in your eyes bothering you." Blinking that much made him uncomfortable. "And I'm just being helpful, knowing you, you'd prob fall flat and miss out on playing with the Kneazles." See, he knew his.. friend. Even though he wished he didn't have one at times. He didn't deserve having a friend. But as much as he didn't want him as a friend, something kept pulling him towards them.... and he hated it. But he couldn't help liking it too. It was so confusing, such thoughts made him so antsy that he wanted to scream! It was like he was under some kind of spell.

For now though, he could ignore the thoughts by focusing on the present. Idris did bring treats with him. "Good. We'll need them, but try not to spend too much of it... I think Nes would want some too after." Maybe when he wasn't messing with that purple part-kneazle he saw around the castle at times. Paul squinted at the sight of the kneazles crawling up to Idris.... How does he do that? Was he part-cat-kneazle or something? They usually were aggressive but even without the treats at hand from their prior visits, Idris never came out of the pens with a scratch. He could probably lie on the grass and be enveloped in kneazle love and die happily.

"Erm... so how does Aprodite look?" Paul cautiously sat nearby ready to examine. He read about them their characteristics. Just as one already started to sniff him. Otis, it looked like. They were always on the nosey side. Paul offered his palm to sniff before letting him get closer.

Rather than being offended by the words, Idris broke into a soft burst of giggles. Honestly, Paul was so silly! Not to mention quite hilarious with the red face. It was definitely difficult to take him seriously when he was red. Almost like a tomato “I’m quite flattered you care this much but I promise there’s nothing in my eyes.” Nope, he was all bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to be engulfed in all the love and affection from the kneazles! “The only way I’m falling over today is if these babies throw themselves at me.” Idris would have made one thing clear had he known Paul’s thoughts right then: Paul deserved a friend just as the next person. It was why Id always stuck around. He’d never been given a reason to walk away.

“True. Nes would get very annoyed and take that annoyance out on you.” Id side-eyed Paul apologetically, since Nes always seemed to be attacking the Hufflepuff for no good reason. It wasn’t as though Paul was a bad co-parent, so Id had arrived at the conclusion that being violent was how Nes showed his affection for the other guy.

This Gryffindor was sadly not part kneazle but would certainly die happily if surrounded and overrun by them. Giggles erupted again as the creatures swarmed him so that he was forced to fall backwards. He didn’t hurt himself in the process, and even if he had, it would not have been noticed. Not when there were PAWS ON HIS CHIN! And a little tongue flicking at his cheek. “From this angle she looks fine, Paul.” Aphrodite was the one getting up close and personal. Id cautiously put a hand at her side. The kneazle didn’t shy away from his touch as he would expect an expecting mother who wanted to protect her babies to be. “Sadly...I think she’s eating a little too many treats.” Speaking of… Id stuck a hand out in Paul’s direction. “Here you are! Let me love these babies while you feed the rest!” Giggling, and quite high on happiness, he wrapped his arms around the four kneazles - Aphrodite, Orion, Maya and Honey - that were hounding his face in an attempt to lick or sniff him.

Daily rounds in tending to ALL the creatures within her care might seem overwhelming to some but not her. Hadleigh loved her job, working with so many different creatures each and everyday calmed her soul. Truthfully she thrived on caring for them, never knowing what each day would bring. It was very much like her years at home with her husband raising their four fantastic children. The only real difference was, these ones were a bit more contained annnnnnnnd there were a ton more of them. So thank you to all the students and some staff that did drop in to say hello, feed, play with and help clean up. It was so appreciated.

So hearing voices (though not able to make out every word said) as she pushed open the barn doors and stepped inside didn't come as any surprise to Hady at all. "Hello to you all," she greeted the creatures in one go, meows, neighs, and other random sounds filled her ears. "Oh my, well don't you all sound lively today! Don't worry, everyone will checked on and we'll have some playtime in a bit." It was much needed to keep them all fit and healthy!

"Not to startle anyone else with my presence, hello to whomever else is here and currently out of my field of vision." With as large as the inside of the barn had to be in order to comfortably house all the creatures that it did, it wasn't easy to see every spot of the barn from near the doors.
