| | Owlery At the very top of the West Tower is where all owls, whether belonging to you individually or the school, reside. As you ascend the tower and its many stairs, constant hooting can be heard and you can feel the temperature gradually dropping. Once you open the door, you can feel a draft blowing straight at you because there is no glass where the windows would be. A few owls flutter in and out of the windows as the door closes.
Stepping deeper into the owlery, hundreds of owls lining the walls in their little nooks turn their head at you. Some even swoop down from their perches to say hello in the hopes that you'll give them a few owl treats that are in a closed bag inside a drawer of an old wooden desk that was placed in the centre of the room. If you investigate the desk further, you will find spare ink, quills, and parchment should you need to write a letter on the spot if you aren't here to just check up on the owls. Pellets, old animal skeletons, belladonna berries, and owl droppings cover the floor, so watch your step.

Sophie climbed to the top of the West Tower. Stepping inside the owlery, she was greeted by the soft cooing of many owls, as well as a very pungent odor. She wrinkled her nose with slight disgust as she picked her way carefully over the floor, which was littered with things best not thought about.
Persephone was roosting quite low down, and it was easy enough to reach her. "Hi girl," Sophie whispered, caressing the tawny owl's feathers. "Who's a good girl?" Persephone nibbled at her hand affectionately.
"I've got a letter for you," said Sophie. It was a letter for her parents. Her mother in particular was dying to know everything that had happened so far. How would her sweet Hufflepuff mother react to the news that her eldest child had been placed in Slytherin? That would be interesting indeed.
Sophie had just given Persephone the letter when she heard someone enter the Owlery behind her.

Sophie had just given Persephone the letter when she heard someone enter the Owlery behind her. Ashley entered the owlery. She was planning on giving Maggie a letter for her friend. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be doing that but she didn't much care. She was going to write him anyway. She saw Sophie was already there. "Hey," she said, recognizing the girl from class. "What's up?" She passed her letter to Maggie quickly. "You know where to go. Please. Love you. In case you don't know where to go, it's tim's house. You get extra treats for delivering. C'mon." Maggie decided that that was good enough. She flew off with the letter. "How are you enjoying Hogwarts? And how's your housemates?" she turned her attention back to Sophie. |

They had spent time being partners in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Sophie smiled. She liked the Ravenclaw.
" Oh hello," she said. " It's amazing here, isn't it? I haven't met all my housemates yet, but the prefect Aboli is very nice. How about you? How are you settling in? Do you have any older siblings that go to Hogwarts?"
Sophie finished attaching the letter to Persephone's leg. She told the owl to fly back home, and she hooted once in response. Then she jumped up and flew out through one of the many open windows.

"Yeah. It's nice. Weird tho. I'm the oldest kid. And the first in my family to ever go to Hogwarts. Muggle-born I guess. Pretty owl you have." She stared out the window after the owls. "Animals are cool. Just like surfing and drawing and reading and spells. Those are all cool things." She paused for a moment. "Hogwarts is awesome- the people are so nice. it has almost everything I could ever want." Almost. "What's your favorite part of Hogwarts?" |

She wondered what that was like but didn't want to be rude by asking too many prying questions. Instead she said, " I'm the oldest in my family too. My mum was a Hufflepuff, and my dad is a Muggle. He owns the bookstore in our village."
Sophie took a minute to think about Ashley's question. Classes were interesting and fun. The grounds were amazing to explore, and of course the castle was just incredible. She hadn't even explored a tenth of it yet. " I like our classes the best so far. I really want to learn as many spells as I can. What's your favorite part? Also, you surf? That's really cool. I've never been surfing but back home my dad would take me to ride horses sometimes. That was always really fun!"

I forgot which one. Your family has a bookstore? Epic! Then you get to be nearby books." Ashley secretly wondered what it was live to live in a village, but she was afraid to straight-up ask. "I like spells too. Especially healing spells. People get hurt at the beach all the time, so maybe if I become a lifeguard, I can actually heal them instead of... Y'know, broken necks, and all that other stuff. Sometimes I wonder why magic is a secret, but I think it's because people would hunt magic down if the knew. It's sad though." She shrugged. "Anyway, you've ridden a horse? I don't even know if it's legal to do that on the streets where I live. You probably need a permit. I've only been in cars." She liked Sophie. She was so interesting... and... not annoying. The wizarding world was so fascinating. Maybe if Ashley learned enough magic, she could figure out how to save muggles with magic without them noticing what was happening. It probably involved wiping memories. Which probably required a permit. Ashley refocused on the room. "Is being in a half-muggle family like being in a wizarding family? Because if you have magic, why not use it? Because even though there are muggles, they still have access to magic sorta." |

Because if you have magic, why not use it? Because even though there are muggles, they still have access to magic sorta." Sophie wondered if Ashley meant Sydney, Australia. If so, that was way beyond cool. She had never left Europe before. " Sydney like the one in Australia?" she asked. " That's so cool. I wish I could go there. Don't laugh but I actually don't know how to swim that well." She flushed a bit. She didn't usually admit to things she didn't know how to do.
" Healing spells sound especially good. Is that what you want to be when you leave Hogwarts? A Healer? That sounds like a good job. Oh, I didn't ride any horses on the street, only in parks and things like that. And magic is amazing. My mum comes from a wizarding family so we mostly only use magic, but my dad has taught me a lot about Muggle stuff. I think he enjoys being in the wizarding world though. I think it's hard for him to keep magic a secret too."
Sophie wondered if she should ask Ashley to hang out sometime later. They couldn't spend time in the common room because they were in different houses, but maybe they could go to the courtyard sometime before it got really cold out.

I go to a lot of places. You aren't alone in the swimming thing. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people there at the beach who can't swim either. It's not really important in places where there is no water. Yeah, when I get out of Hogwarts I want to be a healer or an animal handler." She sighed. "I really want to be a lifeguard, because you can help people and go to the beach. Imagine if you only knew the airway-clearing spell and the bubble-head spell. So many people wouldn't die. And they wouldn't have to do so much cpr. But I doubt we are allowed to use magic to help muggles. Probably end up getting arrested." She looked out the window gain. "The wizarding world is pretty great. And your dad is right. It's hard to keep magic a secret. Because it's fun and you could help people." Ashley wisely decided not to say more about the subject, because she knew you weren't supposed to share magic with muggles. "We should hang out sometime." |

I don't understand why we're not supposed to use our magic to help Muggles. Since you're Muggle-born, I don't suppose your parents know much at all about magic or Hogwarts, do they?"
Sophie remembered how confused her dad had been when she had received her letter. Her mum had to explain everything, that no she couldn't go to an ordinary secondary school in the countryside near their village. She was so glad that she was a witch like her mum. Secondary school sounded super boring to her. Magic was so much more fun than learning more math or having to practice grammar or something. Blah.

The lake, the duck pond, the courtyard place with the fountains... Anywhere where there is water. Also, if muggles could use magic, we could save lives and stop polluting the environment and make life easier for people. I assume that they are hiding magic for our own safety." It was a shame. "My dad doesn't know anything about magic. He's never even been to Diagon Alley. Too 'busy'." The busy was in air quotes. 'Busy' meant he didn't care. She had to go to DA with her chauffeur, because her dad told him to drive her there and back. Parental affection was an interesting concept. |
