Hidden in the higher mountains of Wales, Unplottable and rumoured to be located somewhere within Snowdonia, lies the Welsh Dragon Reserve. Established centuries ago, this reserve is home to the native Common Welsh Green; however, over the years other other breeds of dragons (such as the Hebridean Black, Peruvian Vipertooth, Norwegian Ridgeback, Swedish Short-Snout, Romanian Longhorn, and Chinese Fireball) have been added to the reserve for training and research purposes as well as the safe-keeping of these dangerous beasts.

Dragons roam freely within a valley, which has magically drawn perimeters, containing a wooded forest, grassy plains, and numerous streams. There is a well-worn path that dragonologists use to make their way around the reserve, which begins and ends at the base of a snowcapped mountain. Some of the smarter dragons like to linger around this area as the feral goats trekking on the lower ranges make for an easy meal.

A large and deep cave can be found up alongside the mountain, which is where many dragons like to brumate during the winter months. The cave also doubles up as the training and research facility used by the dragonologists that work at the reserve. University students who aspire to work with dragons are encouraged to visit the reserve, where they can observe under the supervision of an employed dragonologist.

It wasn't every day that work brought them to a dragon sanctuary. The number of times such a situation had arose could be counted on one hand (a tiny hand if his daughter had any say in the matter, and she usually always had a say even if she had to stay behind on some business trips). But here they were and with a pair of dragon eggs nestled safely in a crate for transportation. The white pearlescent sheen was a clear indicator that these were a pair of Swedish Short-Snouts, twins perhaps, and it really was quite the tale as to how they had fallen into the care of Creatures and Cwtches Sanctuary...which was not (yet?) equipped to handle dragons.

Derf was still doing repairs to the fences and barns the infant erumpent had created before being transferred elsewhere. They were, for now, still a humble ranch and rehabilitation facility - and home.

He hadn't exactly dressed up...but he WAS wearing a clean white shirt which was a rarity these days. Turning to grin at his wife (still wild to use that word), he couldn't help but ask... "Where do you think we could, eventually, fit a dragon section on the sanctuary?"

Purely rhetorical and whimsical thinking here. Probably.

Chloe would have kept the dragon eggs, if she could. Would have kept them, and built a nest for them right next to the fat pot-bellied stove in their house, and then wept over them every day until they cracked open. She'd already wept over them a little every day they'd been in the Kettleburn-Ashburry-Hawthorne keeping, but those were happy tears and hormonal tears. And also heartbroken tears because the baby dragons were going to grow up without her as their mother.

She was a mess, wasn't she?

"If we could ward and clear the back acre... never. We need more space so they don't feel confined." Oh, Chloe was tearing up again. CONFINED. "But we could keep them just a little while until they're too big to sleep in our bed, right? I think that would be okay. And baby dragons that are raised near humans aren't completely doomed upon reintroduction to the wild, even if every study I found says they are. We could be the first. It would be very good advertisement."

Oh. He had done that. He had gone and said something that had made her cry and he had SWORN to himself that he was not going to make her cry this time. This time because, well, he had behaved like he had simultaneously been struck by a Confundus Charm and, he was ashamed to admit to it, Disillusionment Charm to an embarrassing degree. Yes, he knew his wife was hormonal and, maybe, just a little more so than she had been while carrying Bria-bee...but ... still. STILL.

Saying nothing at first, Derf simple swooped in and lay an arm around her shoulders to pull her gently to his side so he could leave a tender kiss atop her head. "We can come visit them often, if you would like." He glanced over to the crate that was floating beside them with the eggs nestled safely inside. "We're just...sending them off to boarding school."

Which was not even a remotely accurate comparison...nor a good comparison to make in the moment. Probably.

Chloe knew she wasn't being rational, but feeling irrational actually made it feel even HARDER to control the tears. Like she knew she shouldn't be crying over taking dragons to a place they would be safe and happy, but then here she was... crying. And making Derf feel bad, if the arm around her shoulder was any indication. She rubbed her cheek against his chin.

"We have to visit or Bria will never forgive us. Maybe we can just live here for a few weeks a year." She was still not being rational. What was rational? Rob a bank to buy more land? Sell off the estate she'd inherited, since no one was even using it, even though it had been in the family forever and her mother's extended family might ACTUALLY send someone to murder them if she did? Trust absolute strangers to take care of these baby dragons better than she could? Nonsense. "Derf. I might be crazy. I don't think I can trust my brain right now. Is this the right thing?"

She was perfectly allowed to feel her feelings! Maybe he should write to Celyn and have her come over for a bit. His sister had a magical empathetic touch and likely could assure Chloe better than he could. He made a mental note to owl her, the Ashburry-Hawthorne siblings were overdue for a hang out anyway and Bria had been asking about Auntie Celyn as well.

"You are not crazy, Chloe," he smiled and tried his darndest not to laugh. He did, however, kiss the top of her head again and rubbed the shoulder his hand was resting upon. "You are never crazy. You're just...feeling disappointed because you think in passing these eggs along to the reserve that you are inadequate as a mother figure...and nothing could be further from the truth." Derf paused his stride to give her shoulder another tender squeeze. "They'll be with their own kind here. Remember hearing about when Hogwarts tried to house a baby dragon and how that went?" He paused again and smiled down at her. "We're doing the right thing, Chloe. I promise."

And maybe they could make it back for the hatching and first roar at their foster mama dragon. He was sure Chloe, and Bria, would enjoy that.

Derf made sense, but Chloe wasn't sure she wanted to hear sense. Which wasn't really sensible. "You're telling me how I feel and I don't like that. Not that you're wrong, but I don't really like anything." Except this dragon egg and not moving from the hug Derf was giving her.

And chili fries, even though she was vegetarian. That was a conundrum. "I want a window seat that's big enough for me, two children, and three dogs. That will make me stop fretting about the egg." For now. For... 5 minutes, maybe.

Well...that...that was...well...yes, yes he was. He was doing the baby bowtruckle thing again (something the wrock industry would never quite let him forget nor live down...ish) and he maybe ought to not do that. Well, no maybe. His wife was literally telling him she did not appreciate it so...yes. He ought to cease that tendency.

So he rubbed her arm some more and offered a sheepish king of apologetic smile. "I...think I could make that happen. We do have that one wall in the living room just adjacent to the porch that I could knock out and make a bay window relaxation nook." It really wasn't even a question of if. Derf enjoyed a bit of manual labor in the form of construction and if it was something Chloe wanted and needed...then it was done. "Maybe a built in bookshelf on one of the sides too?"

"A bookshelf would be nice," Chloe hiccuped softly and wiped her face against Derf's shoulder one more time before releasing him. There was a part of her that wondered if a little construction was enough to make space for a whole additional human. "You smell nice. I got you a bit soggy, didn't I?"

It was time to recenter on the reason they were here. "Let me kiss the egg goodbye."

The nice thing about owning their land and Derf earning the proper credentials to achieve the level of construction their home and surrounding sanctuary required was that they could always make just a little more room. That had become the family motto, hadn't it? Just make a little more room - save for dragons. At least for the time being. He couldn't deny that someday he would love to open a small scale dragon forest on their property...but it would take a lot more time and energy than either of them currently had available. Something that was difficult for him to admit to but sometimes you just had to face the facts.

"A bookshelf would be nice," he agreed and kissed his wife (!!!) on the forehead once more before setting his thumbs to brush her cheeks and dry them just a little in the process. "You can make me soggy anytime, Chloe," he chuckled before turning his attention to the cargo in their care and levitated it closer to her. "Take your time."

Or, well, there was a slight rush in that they hadn't made preparations to stay over in the area and did need to head back to relieve the Branxton boy from the additional duty of watching their daughter.
