Teddy stared at his feet, facing the hall of people who were older, who knew more, and whom he could swear were all having a good laugh at the line of first years in which Teddy was included. As students were called, Teddy shuffled to the side, closer to the front. He would have been relieved to be last in line but for one tiny thing: they had reached ‘L’s.
“Lupin, Theodore.”
Teddy’s legs turned to jelly as he walked toward the Sorting Hat, put it on, and promptly tripped over the stool, his hair and face a deep red. | |

Teddy snickered as the third parchment hit her. She turned with a glare, her sunlight-red hair whipping around violently. Her face was red with anger, and Teddy wondered if he really should have messed with a Weasley. Then he remembered he’d been doing so since he was born.
Her hair fanned out again as she turned back to her notes before throwing a ball at Teddy which he opened. I will x-tinguish you like a candle.
Teddy grinned and scribbled before passing the note back. He saw her lips tighten as she read. I don’t think that’s how it’s spelt.

Teddy had often been told he had a “lope.” He’d been offended at first. He certainly did not walk like a horse or walk with uneven, ape-like bounding as the dictionary said. But then, one day, watching muggle t.v. he’d gotten caught up in something about wolves.
“The wolves often lope casually and with the grace of a predator toward their prey as if to appear harmless and to save their energy for the chase.”
Teddy had left the den and instantly gone to find Harry. “Harry, did my dad lope?”
Harry thought for a moment. “Yes.”
Teddy smiled. “Good.”

Teddy was in his room at the Potter’s when it happened, studying for an exam. He had only three more in his training for the Department of Mysteries.
James Potter barged in. “Teddy, do you know how to yodel?”
“No.”
Next came Albus. “Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“We can teach you.”
“Out.”

“Well, he didn’t say no,” Albus pointed out, “Let’s make some tea. Teddy loves tea.”
James grinned.

Upstairs, Teddy eyed the tea warily, then took a sip before clapping his hands over his mouth, startled.
“POTTER!” He wished he could say he shouted, but he didn’t. He yodeled.

“Turn to page three hundred and ninety-four.” The professor gave Teddy an odd glance, and instantly, Teddy knew what was coming.
He flicked through the pages until he landed on the correct one. WEREWOLF. The word blared up at him in the heading and Teddy gave a tired sigh, thinking about his father. Bravery, a kind face, a love for tea and chocolate... things he’d only heard about.
He started to read. Monsters, blood-thirsty, dangerous.
The book said nothing that really mattered. Nothing that Teddy thought mattered anyway. Nothing about families, and pride, and little boys crying over lost memories.

“Did you see Lupin’s face? Bet no one’s told him before what a monster his father was!” The boy elbowed his friend before they both had a good laugh.
Teddy’s fists balled at his sides. He tried to keep himself composed, but as the boys passed him and howled obscenely, Teddy couldn’t hold himself back.
With a roar, Teddy tackled the boy who had spoken, grabbing the Hufflepuff’s tie. “Don’t talk about my father! You know nothing!” Teddy screamed, hair a vivid red as he threw punches.
He didn’t hear Peeve’s quip excitedly, “Fight! Fight in the first floor corridor!”

There was a silence.
“Please?”
Harry sighed. Full name time. “Theodore Remus Lupin, for the last time, I said no!”
“Don’t call me Theodore!” Teddy shouted, glaring, his hair turning bright red.
Harry grinned. “Then don’t act like a three year old. Do I need to count to ten, too?”
“Fine! I’ll get my own!”
The seventeen -year-old stormed up the stairs, stomping on each one. Harry only chuckled. He really would’ve thought that being of age, Teddy would have started carrying it around by now.

“Chocolate! CHOCOLATE!” Teddy’s hands grasped at air desperately from within his pram, legs kicking at the plastic front of his seat wildly. “’arryyyy, chocolate!” the toddler wined.
Harry sighed. “No chocolate today, Teddy. We have to be to Gran’s in five more minutes.”
There was a long quiet moment and Teddy sniffled, the shop front already long gone behind them. There were many more, but none with anything so exciting as chocolate in their windows. Harry went back to daydreaming, enjoying the sunshine and soft breeze.
There was a gasp. A finger appeared, pointing once more.
“'arry! Chocolate!”
Harry groaned.

“What the hell is that?”
Teddy was peering at it as well, one brow raised and his head cocked slightly, confusion flickering across his face. “Well… it’s a patronus. My patronus.”
The other boy, Tom, rolled his eyes. “Clearly. But what is it?”
The strange thing half scampered, half waddled toward them, tail flapping behind it like a strange, chunky sail. Teddy watched it, his head no longer to the side, and his expression cleared. The thing’s outline solidified, and Tom snickered.
“I believe it is a platypus. And a fine platypus indeed,” Teddy spoke grandly over Tom’s hiccupping laughter.

Teddy snorted. “You say that like it’s a bad thing and like I don’t do that all of the time.”
Ron looked affronted. “It is a bad thing when it comes to this! I have never read that book and I refuse to. It’s—“
“The principle of the thing.” Teddy shrugged. “Yeah. That’s what Harry always says.”

It was raining and he was wet. His robes and the clothing underneath stuck to him in the most disgusting way possible, but Teddy didn’t mind. It was better than inside where the entire castle was celebrating the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts—the single greatest triumph of the wizarding world since Harry had become “the boy who lived.”
“You should have stayed home,” Teddy whispered, watching from only yards away as the Whomping Willow shuddered and sometimes batted uselessly at the rain drops. “You should have stayed with me.”
It was always easier to cry in the rain.

8. Potions
Teddy Lupin was terrible at potions. It wasn’t a surprise that a klutz would be bad at something that required one to not knock over anything they were using. However, it was still somewhat of a surprise because Teddy Lupin was good at everything else.
It wasn’t just that he tended to knock over his cauldron, drag his sleeves through the fire, or cut himself even when the knife was coated in something dangerous. It was also that he tended to send entire classes to the hospital wing with one explosion. But hey, at least his written papers were good.

Teddy grinned. “Where do you throw it?”
“At whoever you think would be the proudest to see it.”
Teddy cocked his head, thinking that seemed strange. Wouldn’t it fall apart before they could see it that way? But he shrugged, reaching into the snow.
A few meters away, Harry jumped as cold collided with his head. He spun, and Teddy waved at him. “Okay, who gave Teddy the snowball?” The only thing that gave Ron away was a loud guffaw from behind a tree.

Teddy Lupin hates chicken. It’s not chewy enough, it’s not juicy enough. It’s certainly not beefy enough. He’s tried all he can to convince his Gran and anyone else who may be interested that chicken tastes the way getting a towel in your mouth feels.
“It’s as if all the deliciousness is gone from the world. Like my mouth will never be moist again,” Teddy intones dramatically, letting the chicken fall back onto his plate with a ‘plop.’ “Aw, not into the potatoes!” What a waste.
Harry rolls his eyes. Only Teddy would draw a parallel between chicken and Dementors.

“If I don’t, thinking just doesn’t work.” Teddy’s voice was apologetic though he continued, department research still in hand.
“That’s ridiculous,” Victoire said stiffly, though resigned. She’d heard that some people needed to move to focus, and wasn’t suprised that Teddy was the type.
“It is, isn’t it.”
Victoire sighed, struggling to ignore his presence approaching for the hundredth time, until his gentle voice spoke behind her. “If you can’t beat ‘em…?”
“Join ‘em?” Victoire finished wryly. It would kill her concentration, but she smiled fondly before standing with her Charms book and beginning to pace.

Albus’ face grew hot, though his voice stayed cool. “Scorpius will catch the snitch before you even see it.”
Teddy rose a brow, waiting for the explosion. The red-and-green decked room glowing from the Potter’s fireplace now seemed like an omen.
“Ha! I could out-fly him with my eyes closed!”
Albus smirked. “Then how about without these?” Albus grabbed Jame’s glasses off of his face and fled before Teddy laughed loudly, snatching the glasses back.
Quidditch with the Potters was always World War III.

Teddy stared forward as amber eyes, identical to his own, glared back at him. He tried vainly to swallow, then took a moment to realize that to anyone else looking, he was facing down nothing more than a mirror. What a stupid thing to be frightened of! Nonetheless, it made his heart pump and his skin crawl as he imagined screams melting to a howl.
Teddy swallowed and raised his left hand, feeling the something inside himself start to growl at the threat. He prayed that something would never get out and finally spoke. “Riddikulus!”
The wolf snapped it’s jaws.

It had once surprised Teddy how often everyone in the Department of Mysteries’ Time Division seemed to snarl the name Harry Potter. Outside of work, they all seemed just as grateful and slightly awestruck with Harry as the rest of the world, but while working away at the time sand tables or taking notes desperately by the single shelf of prophecies, it became a completely different story.
But now that he had finished training, and often had to bring work home, Teddy understood.
“Hey, Teddy, what’ve got there? Or can you not say?”
“A Time-Turner, Harry,” was Teddy’s pointed reply.

“Zap!” A pudgy finger dug itself into Harry’s elbow.
“Teddy, what are you doing?”
“Zap zap!”
Harry grinned, amused. “Would you like a wand, Teddy?”
“Yeah!” His godson’s eyes shone, and his voice was a gasp of excitement. He clapped his hands and stomped his feet and followed Harry noisily to his study.
Harry rummaged in his desk before handing it over.
“ZAP!” Teddy squealed, excitedly poking Harry with his new wand. There was a pop, and the wand became nothing more dangerous than a rubber chicken. “ICKEN!” Teddy dropped the offending object and ran, leaving Harry nearly in tears.
