Headmaster It wasn’t every day that the Headmistress of Salem Institute left her beloved school. It certainly wasn’t usual for her to seek out the company of an eleven-year-old muggleborn girl. But one rainy afternoon, Cassie was paid a visit.
“You are Cassandra White?” Though it was supposed to be a question, the woman stated it like a fact.
“Yes,” came the confident reply.
“I would like to personally invite you to attend Salem Institute in the fall.” Cassie accepted the neat envelope offered to her. “What do you say?”
“Of course.” She would have been crazy to say anything different. | |

99. Trunk
Cassie had everything packed in her trunk and ready to go for weeks before it was time to depart for Salem. She double and triple checked the contents, even though she knew she had everything. Cassie wasn’t one to forget things. One the day she was scheduled to leave, Cassie was awake bright and early. She brought her trunk down to the departure area hours before she was supposed to be ready.
Luckily, she was able to leave earlier than planned. Cassie travelled via side-along apparition. Her trunk would arrive through different magical means that Cassie was eager to learn.

30. Feast
The welcome feast was attended by nearly every student who attended the school. Even though she was probably the youngest one in the room, Cassie refused to feel small. She strode over to a table and sat down. No one would have to know she wasn’t thirteen.
“You’re lucky you chose a table with other first years.” Cassie didn’t say anything, so the boy continued talking. “My siblings have been going here for years, so I know how things work. You’ll get used to it.”
Some kids at the table looked nervous, while others smiled to greet her.
“I’m Caleb.”

35. Pureblood
“So you didn’t even knew magic was real?” Charlotte asked one afternoon when the girls were lounging around the lounge on their floor.
“Nope.” Cassie shook her head. “But I found out about it pretty young, so I don’t remember anything before I knew. My brother would never talk about it.” She knew he was there for the moment her abilities became evident, but he always refused to talk about it. “You’re a pureblood, right?”
“Yep. My whole family has attended this school for several generations. I think my dad might have actually disowned me if I didn’t get in.” | |

19. Wand
Cassie’s tutor, Misty, took her to get her first wand when she was nine years old. She had been looking forward to that day since she first started learning magical history and theory. She wanted to put that theory into practice.
She sat quietly while she was measured, and politely answered several questions. Finally, the wandmaker handed her a wand. Cassie gave it a wave, but nothing happened. This process was repeated several times.
“Try this. Ebony with unicorn hair.” Cassie waved the wand and saw the golden sparks. She also felt within her that this wand had chosen her.

45. Licorice Wand
A few days into her first year at Salem, Cassie could be found lounging on a couch in the study area of the library. She had a textbook on her lap, and a licorice wand in one hand for easy access to snacking. A voice interrupted her studies.
“You can’t have food in here.” A girl with long, curly blonde hair who Cassie recognized from the feast stood not too far away. Cassie paused for a moment, then gestured to her bag.
“Want one?” The girl stared at her for a moment. Finally, she smiled and moved closer.

13. Quidditch
“It’s a popular sport in the wizarding world,” Caleb tried explaining to Cassie one day. “It’s sort of like…basketball I guess. You have to shoot a ball through a hoop, but it’s played on brooms and there’s a ball someone catches and two that try to hit you.”
“I’m not a big sport person,” Cassie said with disinterest. She turned to the book she was reading, but Caleb was insistent.
“This isn’t just a sport: it’s quidditch! Don’t you at least want to learn how to play?”
“Not really. I told you, sports aren’t really my thing.”
“But it’s QUIDDITCH!”

24. House Elf
“This way.” Caleb led the three muggleborns down the last in a series of staircases, finally reaching the bottom floor of the school. He kept looking around, searching for any sign of what he was looking for. He had taken it upon himself to make sure everyone had a proper introduction to the wizarding world.
“Are you young masters lost?” They heard a small, high pitched-voice from the darkness before they saw the shape of a house elf materialize. Cassie studied the elf for a moment, but she accepted it easier than her other new friends.
“What are you wearing?”

89. Past
Two year old Cassie was screaming in her high chair. She wanted her breakfast and she wanted it immediately.
“It’s not done yet sweetie,” her mom kept trying to tell her, but the little girl refused to listen to reason. She kept screaming and reaching out for the toaster.
“I want toast mommy!”
“Just wait Cassie!”
The second the toast popped out of the toaster, Cassie reached out again. The toast floated across the room and landed on her tray. Cassie began to eat happily.
The room went silent, and Cassie’s mother stared at her daughter with a horrified expression.

70. Spook
Cassie had been practicing her disillusionment charm, and she was finally ready for Halloween. She was going to give her friends the biggest spook of their lives. First up was Jessica. She waited until the girl was getting ready, engrossed with her appearance in the mirror. Cassie sent a spell to shatter the mirror, cautious to make sure there weren’t any flying glass shards. Jess jumped back and looked at her mirror in horror, but Cassie wasn’t done yet.
Her next trick didn’t require magic, but a simple flip of the light switch. Jessica screamed, and she fled her bathroom. | |

4. Ancient Runes
“How can you possibly be stressing over the Ancient Runes OWL tomorrow? You didn’t even take the class!” Caleb stared at his textbook in frustration, possibly trying to will the knowledge to into his mind.
“That’s only because I didn’t have time,” Cassie responded calmly. “I take a lot of classes.”
“She’s just smart,” Charlotte praised with a smile. “Mrs. Anderson said she could take the OWL if she could prove she stood a chance of passing. And she did.” Cassie smiled proudly again.
“Great now you’re going to beat me in a class you didn’t even take,” Caleb grumbled.

14. Hogwarts, a History
“I don’t think this book is the best explanation of all the facts,” Cassie said. “It’s actually really old.” She had decided that it would not do for their Hogwarts research project.
“It does say History,” Caleb pointed out.
“Cassie, we can just find something that’s more current and use this for the history portion.” Cassie considered Charlotte’s proposal.
“Fine but I still don’t want to use this book.”
“Come on Cassie, it’s a known and reliable source.” Charlotte knew Cassie would have to respect that.
“Fine,” she grumbled. “You read it.” She strode off to find a current book. | |
