#26 - Quill

Severus leaned over the table, dipping his quill. He'd show them. Once and for all he would rid himself of Potter, Lupin and Black and there was no way they could talk themselves out of it.

"Dear Governors," he began, putting the quill to the parchment. He growled, having dulled the nib in his rage. The words were smudged and untidy. He pulled out his pocket knife and sharpened it.

The sharpness of the blade was satisfying. Lupin would be expelled and Black would go to Azkaban.

Tap, tap.

"Severus," Albus called from the doorway.

Severus turned angrily, blade poised.

82. Careful

Remus had always been the diplomat. It was not lost on Severus that he had never been unkind to him, except by his silence. For this, Severus took time to add his own special touches to the potion he'd promised to make; mint for calming his stomach, and as much roasted, ground cocoa as could be added without side effects. Knowing Remus' sweet tooth, Severus regretted that he was unable to risk adding sugar.

He paused. Why would he regret that? It's not like I care what it tastes like, he thought.

He continued, carefully avoiding more thought of this.

97. Dictionary

Their eyes were glazing over as she spoke. Severus sighed and looked out the doorway.

"...with the proliferation of mandrake breeding in the last century, making ..."

"To the point, Miss Granger," Severus said smartly. What had ever possessed him to make eye contact with the swotty little human dictionary in the first place? He should've known she'd take that as leave to answer him.

"Well, it's just not used anymore, Professor."

"Precisely. Five points to Mister Nott for noticing its absence in this case. Moving on," he said, turning back to the blackboard. She really did annoy him so.

98. Pajamas

Christmas was a waste of time. If not for Albus' insistence, he'd have spent the holiday off at Spinner's End with his potions journals. He would much rather not indulge in some ridiculous ritual be barely believed in.

He exited the shower to find the package on his bed, wrapped in red with a shiny ribbon. Scowling, he read the tag and opened it to reveal a pair of black, silk pajamas that drifted through his fingers fluidly.

Luxurious.

He made a mental note to avoid the library this week, lest Irma get the idea he'd model them in thanks.

10. Arithmancy

Severus looked at his watch, saw it pass midnight and knocked. He would regret this later.

"Oh Severus!" Vector gasped, fiddling at the collar of her dressing gown. "It's so late, is something wrong?"

"I need to speak with you privately about a matter of the heart," he said softly, stepping into the room and right to her, inches away. Her eyes averted, she blushed.

"My speciality is numbers, Severus. Arithmantic, not romantic. .." she jabbered.

"And mine," he said, taking her hand, "is chemistry." He gazed into her eyes.

His next dare for Flitwick would pay dearly for this.

17. Cauldron

His breath hitched when he saw her the first time in Diagon Alley. Call it puppy love or what you will but he was ill with the wonder of her, and decided at that moment to drag his mother to the cauldron shop.

"Not now, Severus. We'll get your potions things in due time. Let me finish here."

He turned back. She was holding two cauldrons and looked like Justice. Her red hair was blowing in a gust from the street and she laughed music.

"This one, mother," she chimed, handing one over.

"All right, Lily."

Lily. Goddess of cauldrons.

58. Hoot

Dripping and clutching the emerald green towel about himself he cursed inwardly, stomping down the hall to his dormitory. How the hell did they...

He crashed in his fury, sending the Slytherin prefect sprawling.

"Watch it!"

He glared miserably.

"What is it, Snape? Can't get your hair clean?"

He would absolutely kill Black and Potter. Murder. Maim. He looked plaintively at the older boy.

"Cat got your tongue? Answer me," the prefect sneered, backing him against the wall.

He sighed, feeling the heat in his face. Humiliation.

"Hoot," he replied quietly.

"What was that?"

"Hoot, hoot. Hoooot hoo-oot hoot."

Laughter.

85. Snappish

Severus strode from the dungeon classroom with intent. He needed to reach the staff lounge before Minerva and definitely before Flitwick. That little runt had better have left some coffee.

His sneers forged paths through the students. He knocked Sinistra over on the staircase, cursing at her. He grunted past Hagrid and into the lounge.

"Good morning, Severus," Minerva chimed, handing him a steaming cup.

"What a glorious day," Filius added, sharing a knowing grin with her.

Severus glared at them and took his coffee as he left the room. He disliked losing bets on quidditch. It made him snappish.

Of course. Of course Potter would get what he wants yet again, Severus thought as he spied his enemy in the arms of an angel. Lily Evans was passionately kissing James Potter on the lawn.

He looked back into the depths of the black lake, feeling empty.

"You're so sad, Severus," came a voice as she sat down beside him. It was Rose, the pretty, Asian Ravenclaw girl he'd been tutoring.

He turned. "I--"

Quickly, she was upon him in the grass, her lips locked on his. His mind barely registered when she left him, whispering, "You deserve more."

21. Veela

Some things he'd rather not know.

He crept along in the dark, certain that something was amiss. Closer to the boys' dungeon lavatory, he could hear whispering.

"Laugh and you will pay," she said. Millicent was bullying someone again, and he'd have to really reprimand her this time.

He silenced the door, crossed the threshold and peeked. There were Crabbe and Goyle, smirking at a very large veela, draped in scarves and floor-length, platinum hair as it danced... seductively-?

He returned to his chamber silently and opened a bottle. One hundred points from Slytherin for poor taste, he thought, shuddering.

65. Ooze

Severus worked quickly so no one could copy his preparations. He guarded his book and materials, working fastidiously to make the perfect specimen.

The book said to slice the Sopophorus bean. He prodded it with his silver blade. That couldn't be right. The point was to get actual juice from it, right? He dissected a small section of it, peeked inside and smiled. He laid the flat of his knife along the top of the bean and pressed hard. His eyes darted around the room as his Sopohorus oozed triumphantly. Tossing it into the cauldron, he grabbed his quill, smirking.

Knock, knock.

She opened the door, but no one was there. Annoyed, she pulled the door closed but stopped at the sight of a small, tartan-wrapped basket on the floor. She picked it up, opening the small card on top.

The basket held a small bottle of mead and a tin of her favourite biscuits, intended to be shared with him on her birthday. She gaped, finding an envelope of catnip hidden beneath. What exactly was he expecting?

1. Herbology

Severus often visited Pomona, seeing about a crop of this or that which he'd need for lessons weeks later. In return, he made certain that she never ran out of the right fertilisers.

Pomona led him into greenhouse three, where the mandrakes had begun flirting.

"Lovely," Severus said, admiring the foliage.

"Another week and this Mentha Spicata will flower," Pomona mouthed, gesturing and pointing to the large table of pots. Her curly locks bounced as she moved, he noticed, amused. The spearmint scent was tantalising. His thoughts were interrupted as aggressive, teenaged mandrakes swung at him clumsily from their pots.

96. Socks

"Before you leave for the holiday, Severus, I have something for you."

"Really Headmaster, I've no need--"

"Just say thank you, Severus." Albus paused, his eyes misty. "I know you never allow yourself the luxury of great friends. I regret that I've not been one. Please allow me this; something I feel strongly about. It's the greatest gift I ever received and it was from a very special friend."

Severus was truly touched. He fought the frog in his throat and opened the package. Its significance was slightly overshadowed by the sheer ugliness of the lime green wool socks.

18. Whomping Willow

"Why would you tell me this?" Severus asked suspiciously. His wand was ready, aimed at Sirius' face.

"Because I just don't think you'd actually try it. Like any Slytherin, you're too much of a coward to go looking for adventure of this sort," Sirius said, smirking over folded arms. He'd show Severus once and for all. They ruled. They were better. "But if you're really that interested in our plans tonight, you're welcome to join us. No hard feelings." He knew he was lying. He'd never have anything but hard feelings for that creep.

Severus stared at the Whomping Willow.

Mooch

Flitwick was a mooch. Severus always anticipated this, being his friend. This meant holding the plate of food for him a little longer at dinner, always carrying an extra quill to staff meetings and being ready to pay for an extra round at the Three Broomsticks.

"Thanks, Severus, I'll get you next time," he'd say with a wink and a pat on the arm.

"Of course, Filius."

If he'd actually kept track over the years, just of the tab at Rosmerta's alone, it would surely be more than two months' wages.

It was nice to have a real friend, though.

75. Yodel

Wanting to toil at something strenuous wasn't foreign to him. How many times had he worked, cleaning or engaging in some other hard work, letting it cleanse him of his burdens? But this was just silly. Walk? Up a mountain? Filius was a natural; his tiny feet finding every tiny crack the perfect hold. Severus would rather apparate.

When he reached the top, there was Filius grinning madly. He opened up and yodelled spectacularly. Severus caught sight of majestic Hogwarts below them in the distance.

Moved, giddy in the thin air, joyous song poured from him, though with less art.

69. Slap

*Slap!*

It was such a satisfying sound. Of all the days he'd like to hear it, today was it.

Longbottom had melted another cauldron; one of Severus' spares. The first years had, en masse, made a most abysmal mess of Acne Remover that wasn't just wrong, but had filled the dungeon with toxic fumes and sent thirteen students to Madam Pomfrey. Potter had handed in an Acceptable, paper, which just irked him.

So when Granger retaliated after Malfoy opened his stupid little mouth, the resulting slap was so satisfying that although he took the points from Gryffindor, he cheered inside.

37. Animagus

Severus hurried through Diagon Alley. He sensed he was being followed. It wouldn't be the first time. He suspected that Potter had something... an invisibility cloak or something that allowed them to know where he was, because he seemed to show up wherever he went. You'd think after graduation, such blatant bullying would stop.

The new mark on his arm ached miserably. He turned sharply down Knockturn Alley, nearly tripping on a stray, black dog that followed too closely. It looked vaguely familiar, but he didn't pay much attention. If he had, he'd have seen it duck away and transform.

31. Dress robes

The fabric was rich and indulgent. It would cost him more than he'd planned to spend, but one couldn't put a price on being a guest at one of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy's famous socials. Membership has its privileges, he thought, chuckling and adjusting the cuffs. He'd proven himself once to his master and they had to accept him now. Blood good enough for the Dark Lord... he smiled.

He checked his watch and, short on time, hurried to change out of the dress robes. He had to get to Hogsmeade in time for his job interview with Headmaster Dumbledore.

87. Plaid

He should've been listening more attentively, but the plaid on her head was distracting. Why would she cover up those curls with such a thing? He squinted at her in sudden realization. They were flattering, really.

"... best Flitterbloom with... toilet tissue." She was flushed. He snapped out of it and glared effectively at the student, who cowered with the guilt written across his face. Mission accomplished.

"Ten points from my own house, detention at Professor Sprout's whim; whatever she needs done..." and Severus ranted on, trying not to chuckle at the stray toilet paper trailing Pomona as she left.

6. Divination

"Why Professor Snape, I see... romance!" Trelawney shouted this, clearly shocked, as were all present. Sprout was so shocked that she nearly choked on her tea, spluttering it across the rug and excusing herself.

"How very interesting, Professor Trelawny," Severus said, smiling knowingly to those in the staff room. They all nodded and smilied with the unspoken agreement that Sybill was indeed a crackpot, and went back to their break time tea cups. He gently accepted his cup back from her and poured into it quickly before escaping the room. Finding it too warm, he'd decided to visit the greenhouses.

92. Chocolate

Remus knew the value of giving something from the heart; something made with care and thought. He hulled the cacao beans by hand. He ground the cocoa nibs with a pestle and melted them carefully, adding cinnamon, sugar and vanilla. It was important to go the extra mile. That was his gift.

He handed Severus the wrapped tin of home made chocolate at Christmas. If anyone needed something sweet, Remus suspected he did.

Snape took it politely with a nod of thanks, unaware it was from him. Remus loved Secret Santa. He smiled with hope to have made a difference.

99. Newspaper

Severus Snape, The Hero Unmasked! it might say, or Snape Risks Own Neck to Save Potter.

Even Death-Eater Spies for the Good Guys and Wins the War would be an interesting headline.

His mark burned and he quickly fed his secret thoughts into the pensieve and mentally prepared for his meeting. He knew that his efforts would always go unnoticed, unappreciated by anyone save Albus, and now Albus was gone. Damn him for that, he thought, looking into the mirror beside the door. The murderer looked back, angrily. Murderer, Severus Snape, Killed by You-Know-Who, might be tomorrow's Daily Prophet headline.

2. Muggle Studies

"Ask Snape."

Severus glanced up, a table away.

"Snape never took Muggle Studies, and you're the only person I know..." Carson began.

"Well don't look at me, I'm not in that stupid class. Honestly, I can't imagine why any Slytherins are." Miller glared at him.

Carson looked around and whispered, "My dad made me take it. 'Know your enemy,' he says. He says You-Know-Who will reward those who've done their homework."

Severus buried his head deeper into his book. He had plans. Forget his father. Forget his stupid mother for picking him. Forget Potter and them. He'd show them rewards.
