Word 25 ~ Sorting Hat

"Creevey, Dennis!"

The voice of Professor McGonagall sounded around the Great Hall. Colin watched anxiously as his brother up to the battered sorting hat. He crossed his fingers, and nervously fiddled with his camera strap. The moment seemed to last forever.

"Gryffindor!"

A roar of voices sounded out from the Gryffindor table, and Colin prepared his camera to get Dennis as he walked back along the row, greeted by his new house.

Click. Click.

Colin smiled with relief. Deep down he knew Dennis was a Gryffindor, but he had always been a protective older brother and he didn't want that to change.

Word No 13 ~ Quidditch

Dennis wandered towards the Quidditch Pitch, Colin at his side. Draped over them was a large banner, emblazened with "Go Gryffindor Go!" All they needed now was find a space in the stands and the picture to move.

Unable to find Hermione, Dennis tried to remember the incantation himself - but he hadn't paid attention that lesson.

"Acc..." He shook his head. Something flickered in his brain. Could that be it?

"Densaugeo!" He announced, pointing his wand at Colin and the banner. Suddenly Colin's front teeth began to swell rapidly and he ran for the hospital wing, Dennis close behind.

Word 6 ~ Divination

Love at First Sight

Dennis dragged his feet along the ground as he made his way to the most tedious lesson of all - divination. He had only taken it - because, well, to be honest he did not know - but probably because he did not fancy Arithmancy. Numbers were not his thing.

He reached the ladder and climbed up to Trelawny's room. Slomping into a chair, he noticed a pretty girl from another house just across the room. Smiling to himself, he waited for the first prediction of the lesson.

"Today a true love will blossom...."

Could it be...?

Word 8 ~ Potions

In the potions classroom, Dennis sighed. Snape was checking their progress, and his potion was distinctly not the lilac the textbook mentioned. It was not even a close purple like most of the efforts in the room. No, Dennis' was green.

Scanning the instructions, Dennis tried to ascertain where he had gone wrong. He kept stirring, in the hope that it might make a miraculous recovery.

It started bubbling ferociously...Dennis hurriedly added some more ingredients. Snape reached the cauldron.

Kaboom!

It happened as Snape leaned over. Luckily Dennis had only made a hair colourant - and it was Slytherin green.

Word 1 ~ Herbology

The sun shone brightly, and Dennis made his way to the Greenhouses for his first herbology lesson of the term. He opened the door and sat down near a large plant with bright blue flowers.

Unpacking his bag, Dennis slammed his book on the table and laid his writing stuff alongside. It seemed, however, that the plant did not approve of loud slamming noises, and it started to secrete a very particular odour. The smell was not overly strong, but Dennis was close to the plant.

It was not long before snores could be heard from behind the foliage.

Word 10 ~ Arithmancy

Dennis looked at the list of subject options, and was highly indecisive. It had finally come to the time where his future was being decided - but he had not the foggiest clue what to choose.

Giving up on reasonable thought, he cut out the names of the possible OWL subjects. Placing them in his hat, he gave them a gentle shake about. Four extra choices were needed.

"Ancient Runes". He shrugged his shoulders indifferently.

"Divination." At least it might help decide my future.

"Muggle studies." Easy! I'm muggle born!

"Arithmancy." Dennis groaned. Numbers were not exactly his strong point.

Word 15 ~ Broom

Dennis wandered down Diagon Alley, paying little attention to what his older brother Colin was explaining to him. He was in his own world, sulking as he wanted to be at Hogwarts - he still had another year to wait.

Just as they reached Quality Quidditch Supplies, something in the window caught Dennis' eye and jerked him from the sulking.

"Firebolt" the sign read. Dennis' mouth dropped open. One day he would learn to fly and ride a broom like that. At the moment it just a dream of performing in fromt of large crowds, but the day would come.

Word 7 ~ Care of Magical Creatures

Dennis entered Flourish and Blotts', reading his book list. He wandered around finding the titles, though his older had passed many on.

He groaned. Dennis had reached the entry for Care of Magical Creatures - "The Monster Book of Monsters". He remembered the shopkeeper a couple of terms ago...trust Hagrid.

Dennis joined the queue and tried to remember something he heard the older years say in the Common Room. Stroke it. Ignoring the shopkeeper's cries, Dennis picked a book from the shelf, and immediately stroked it down the spine. A soft purring could be heard, and the book gently opened.

Word 70 ~ Teem

Hogmeade was teeming with people that day - well, it was the first visit of the year and the third years were eager to explore their new privilege.

Dennis moved out of the mainstream of Hogwarts' pupils, and headed towards a quiet rocky ridge along from the Shrieking Shack. He usually used it for thinking quietly, but today he was meeting her there.

Hearing footsteps, Dennis turned to see Victoria standing there, blue eyes twinkling. She walked slowly towards him and Dennis felt warm inside - almost a soft heated glow. But today's meeting was strictly for study; exams started Monday.

Word 17 ~ Cauldron

Dennis had woken up with the premonition of something bad, and with potions first thing, it was probably correct. Things started well, yet as soon as Snape entered the room, the feeling increased.

Eyeing the instructions on the board carefully, Dennis started preparing the ingredients. Double checking the method, he added the first items and stirred twice clockwise. Yet as he went to check the cauldrom, it was empty. He tried again, but his additions had vanished. He looked around hopelessly as a muffled giggle came from behind. Sometimes Dennis wished that the Weasley Twins hadn't become quite so good.

Word 91 ~ Future

In North Tower, Dennis was getting unusually frustrated. He fully understood the principles of tesseomatry, but actually getting a prediction was impossible.

After burning his mouth drinking his tea, and swapping his cup with the guy next to him, Dennis flicked open "Unfogging the Future" for guidance. All the cups pictured seemed to show identifiable images, whereas theirs had soggy lumps in.

Seeing Trelawny approach, Dennis studied the round blob and announced "A full moon will occur during the next month!" His partner obviously did not detect his sarcam.

"Yes, on my birthday - how'd ya know?"

Dennis just laughed.

Word 23 ~ Telescope

Yawning widely, Dennis once more peered through his telescope at the night sky.

Weird, it was in focus a minute ago...

Looking above the instrument, Dennis spotted the problem. An owl was flapping irritably in front of him, one leg forwards. On the end of that leg was a tiny parcel, and Dennis untied it before shooing the bird away.

Unfortunately this owl was a stubborn fellow, and it was not going to move without being paid. Dennis rummaged through his pockets, eventually finding some owl treats. Clutching the packet he smiled, put it safely and returned to his work.

Word 12 ~ Charms

Professor Flitwick stood at the front of the class, demonstrating the correct technique. Dennis copied the swish and flick action loosely with his wand, before trying the incantation. He was not getting his hopes up for the feather floating in mid air - or even moving for that matter.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" he said firmly.

The feather moved slightly, but that may have just been due to the sneeze of the person behind.

Dennis tried again. After a few attempts, Dennis cracked the spell - only leviatated his quill by mistake. Ink dripped over his notes and onto his head.

Word 2 ~ Muggle Studies

Dennis grinned as he went to his first Muggle Studies lesson. For him it would be relatively easy, being muggleborn, but he was interested how his classmates would react.

On the front desk, Dennis spotted a variety of lamps and torches. The Professor spoke.

"This is an experimental lesson. Please explore the artefacts, trying to identify their use in the Muggle world."

Dennis chuckled as a pair accidently turned on the torch, shining it directly in their eyes. Dropping the torch, one reached out blindly, tripping over a desk and falling into a heap.

"Is to stun people?" the girl asked.

Word 99 ~ Newspaper

Dennis watched as an owl swooped in and dropped the latest Daily Prophet newspaper off the his brother. Colin smiled proudly, as Dennis asked "So which page did your story and picture get to this week?"

Colin pointed to the headline - SURGERY DECREASES AS SCARS BECOME MORE FASHIONABLE. "Front page! Full article, headline, picture, the lot!"

Dennis grinned and patted his brother on the back. "Whoa - way to go!" He paid the owl and read the article with interest over Colin's shoulder. As he got to the end, he nodded knowingly.

"What gave you the inspiration?"

"Harry Potter, of course!"

Word 75 ~ Yodel

Dennis woke with a start. There was a large noise coming from downstairs and he groaned. Climbing out of bed, he noticed that all his dorm mates had also gone to investigate.

As he neared the Common Room, the racket grew louder. Stepping out the Portrait Hole, Dennis saw the house glaring at Peeves - due to the fact he was yodelling.

Yes - yodelling, at some stupid time in the morning. Whilst Hermione continued with the threats (none of which were actually heard over Peeves) Dennis returned to bed, covered his ears with his pillow and tried to sleep.

Word 5 ~ Astronomy

It was Wednesday evening, time for Astronomy. Dennis generally enjoyed the subject - just not the time and fact had potions the following morning.

Today he was searching the sky for Mars, the red planet - though it didn't appear very red to Dennis. Marking it down, he moved on to the stars listed on the board, yawning loudly.

Leaning forward onto the desk, Dennis closed his eyes and started to drift away...

Suddenly he jerked awake. The sound of the Professor's voice was getting closer. Grabbing his quill, Dennis put his eye to the telescope and focused once more.

Word 88 ~ Sweet Tooth

Dennis entered the Great Hall for dinner, today feeling particularly hungry. He and Colin had spent all day practising hexes and keep being put in the full body bind was pretty tiring.

Sitting down, he looked at the array of dishes in front of him. Dennis had a sweet tooth, and only ate the main course to get to the pudding. Piling some chicken and vegetables on his plate, he listened to others talking as he ate.

Finally dessert was served. Cutting a large slab of chocolate cake and ice cream, Dennis was in his element, having seconds...thirds...and fourths.

Word 3 ~ Transfiguration

Dennis walked into the Transfiguration classroom to find Professor McGonagall sitting at her desk.

"Night time prowling, Mr Creevey?" She raised her eyebrows. "What do you have to say for yourself?"

"I think I started sleepwalking, Professor" Dennis answered. "All I remember is being lost and needing to go to the bathroom. I'm sorry."

McGonagall nodded. "Very well. I will make do with two pieces of parchment stating 'I will not go out on midnight wanderings'. Gryffindor are playing Slytherin at Quidditch later and I would not want you to miss them...erm...lose..."

She winked before returning to her work.

Word 4 ~ Ancient Runes

Dennis sat in the Common Room, glaring at the homework in front of him. On top was Ancient Runes - a subject that was just, well, confusing. What was the difference between Ihwaz and Isa anyway?

Spotting Hermione in the corner, he decided to get some help. "Can you explain this to me please?"

Hermione nodded. "Sure."

"To create a spell in runes you have to be aware of converse and reverse placements. In such, these can totally ruin the outcome. In the case of Isa..."

Dennis looked bewildered at the rush of seemingly foreign words. "From the beginning, please?"

Hermione blushed. "Of course."

Word 94 ~ Allergic

Dennis entered Greenhouse #4 and sat near the back. He opened his textbook and listened to Professor Sprout explain about Aconite.

"....it is of course an extremely poisonous plant also known as wolfsbane, and Monkshood because the shape of the flowers somewhat resembles a monk's cowl...."

Today's task was to recognise and gather it from the school grounds. Pulling on his dragon hide gloves, Dennis walked through some grass at the back of the castle. Picking out some aconite, he picked some and smelt it.

"Achoo!"

"Bless you!"

"Achoo!" His eyes began to water and itch. "I think...achoo!...that I...achoo!...might be....achoo!...allergic!"

Word 33 ~ Classroom

Popping into an empty classroom, Dennis pulled out a mirror. He and Colin had bought them at Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes during the summer holidays.

"Psst...Colin!" Dennis spoke into the simple rectangular shape, tapping it with his wand.

"What? I'm in the middle of something..." came the muffled reply.

"I've got the stuff."

" Stuff? Oh That stuff!" Colin could be seen to be nodding knowledgeably.

"The owl brought it to Astronomy last night." Dennis paused. "Well, when do we start?" He asked his older brother.

"Tonight...yes...tonight."

Dennis giggled as he returned the mirror to his pocket and left the room.

Word 32 ~ Common Room

Dennis was unable to sleep that night - he was just too excited. Although he was getting older, he still loved the thrill of getting presents at Christmas.

Unable to wait any longer - it was now 7am after all - Dennis gathered his presents that had appeared at the end of his bed during the night. He crept down to the Common Room to find Colin already there.

"There you are!" he said, amazed. "I've been waiting ages!"

Dennis sat beside Colin on the rug by the fire and opened their gifts together, like they did every year.

Word 87 ~ Plaid

Dennis knocked on the large wooden door.

"Enter!"

He turned the brass handle..."You wanted to see me, Professor?"

Professor McGonagall, dressed in plaid robes, sat thoughtfully at her desk and nodded.

"Indeed I did. Have you any idea why?"

Dennis' mind raced, thinking back over the happenings of the last week. But he had not done anything....

"Harry Potter showed me a picture you took when we won the Quidditch Cup this term. It's amazing - really sums up the atmosphere." She paused. "I'd like to put a copy in the Gryffindor locker room."

Dennis relaxed and grinned. "Of course."

Word 9 ~ Defence Against the Dark Arts

Dennis scanned the shelves of the library for the book he wanted. Snape had set them a three-foot long essay on the Patronus charm, and although he knew how to conjure it, Dennis needed some theory to bulk out the essay. It wasn't worth thinking about the detentions Snape might set.

Dennis flicked through a book, thinking of the memory he used to cast the Patronus. It showed the breakfast when he received his Hogwarts owl - confirmation that the magical ability had been given to him as well as his brother. That letter had meant the world to him.
