"Porpington, Nicholas de-Mimsy!"
Nicholas sat upon the sorting hat stool a shivering eleven year old gripping the edges of the seat.
"Hmm" the hat whispered in his ear "a certain stubborness, rather daring, ready to leap in the unknown..... yes, yes, yes, there is potential.....................GRYFFINDOR!" Nick almost melted with relief. The Slytherin table hummed a low boo for each of the Gryffindor's that were sorted but they were scarcely heard over the applauding of the Gryffindors.
Grinning mildly as if he didn't want all this fuss but was happy to get it, he sat down and watched Podmore being sorted.

Floating along the 7th floor corridor morosely as usual he looked up as a voice roared "Stand back Spectre! Thou thing of scoundrels! Thou art a cad with no spine!"
Nick raised an eyebrow at Sir Cadogan’s painting. Everytime he went up to the Gryffindor common room he had to endure this.
"Thank you Cadogan" said Nick exasperatedly voice at another aspect of him being pointed out so obviously.” If you hadn't told me I would have wasted several galleons on a back massage, and stop using all that thou art, I haven’t heard anyone talk like that for 200 years”

“Wouldst thou do me the duty of straightening my teeth?" she ordered.
Nick rubbed his eyes "madam, I’m tired, my skills are hampered-"
“Try your best" she ordered opening her mouth.
Nick raised his wand, tapped Lady Grieve's teeth, at once an elephantine tusk sprouted. She shrieked waved her arms as Nick cried "Madam let me change it...Please".
"No!" she choked against her obstructing tusk. "Thou will feel blunt of an axe, tomorrow at dawn" she said running in to the carriage. The footmen lead Nicholas to the interior then hopped on the carriage, which trundled towards her manor’s dungeon.

Nick picked wand after wand in Ollivander's shop. His mother in her frumpy puffy dress sat expectantly upon the fancy chair while his father paced back and forth. " Nick things are never simple with you are they" said his father in an annoyed voice.
"Please Mr Porpington, it takes others alot longer than this sometimes" said the old wandmaker "Nearly everyone at Ollivanders tries nearly everyone of Ollivander's".
Nick picked and flicked a light wooded wand and pink and blue sparks flared out of the end.
"I believe my work here is done" said the old Ollivander in a satisfied voice.

It was 12:15 and all through the castle not a creature stirred as Nick sat napping up in an old teacher's office, it was a long time since it had been used which was shown through the amount of cobweb collections the room had accumulated. The room was long forgotten but not by Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington.....and Peeves. He opened the door with silence and launched the vase he was carrying at Nick. Nick woke with a start and almost fell upon the stone had he not caught himself in mid air and floated back up as Peeves cackled down the corridor.

"Yes, didn't you hear, Harry Potter and his friend Ronald Weasley drove a flying ford Anglia in to the whomping willow last night" said Nicholas casually as he and the Grey Lady drifted along the third floor corridor.
"A ford anglia?" asked the Grey Lady
"A sort of car muggles use, but apparantly Ronald's father had enchanted it to fly, well most of the breakfasters heard all about this morning when the boy recieved a howler, I'm surprised you didnt hear about it earlier. I was there and talking to Percy Weasley and the letter exploded like thunder, I tell you my mother was strict but to be in that boy's boots now...". replied Nick

As Nick passed through the dungeon passageway he just missed Severus Snape walking in to his classroom behind the Longbottom boy. Nick couldn't surpress a grin as he passed the potion master's classroom at the thought of Neville forcing hsi Snape boggart in to his grandmother's clothing. Nicholas couldn't be harmed by boggarts but he remembered only too well the form one took when he was alive, it was in fact his own teacher but that had changed as had grown up.

As Nicholas sat watching the new Gryffindor's amongst them Harry Potter, a bushy haired buck toothed girl spoke up about how much work she had done before hand.
"Excuse me" she asked Nicholas "but you did say you were called Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington?"
"Yes my dear, I was called Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington and still am" said Nick turning to her.
"Wow, I've finished reading Hogwarts a History and you're mentioned in it" the girl said excitedly.
"Yes, I did teach at this school many years ago and gave several interviews to the author" said Nicholas proudly "having my name printed was all the payment i needed, shame I couldn't turn the pages is all" said Nick rather morosely as the girl's smile flickered awkwardly.

Nick drifted through the common room as doleful as ever he heard a cry from one of the desks. "Hoi! Nick! Nick do you know anything about Vampire rights in the 7th century" asked Ron.
Nicholas drifted over and looked down at Ron's parchment which had one paragraph so far and a half finished sentence. "Well I do know, but you should really listen to professor Binns and read Bathilda Bagshot's History of Magic"
"Have you ever listened to Binns talk Nick?" said Ron in amazment "he sounds like our old Ford Anglia when it wouldn't start".
"I happen to have rather interesting conversations with Professor Binns about good old times" said Nick warningly "but since you evidently believe such conversations to be twaddle, I'll let you do it by yourself young man" said Nick before moving to the otherside of the common room.

Nick watched, wiped away a transparent tear as he watched the funeral wizard give a speech on Dumbledore. Nick always had great respect for the headmaster and would never forget how he valued Nick’s opinion above all of the ghosts. He knew Dumbledore was trusting which made it highly believable, Dumbledore would put his trust in Snape even if he turned out to be a crawling sleeze bag but he smirked, he saw Umbridge glance over at the centaurs near the forest firing their arrows in respect and grinned moreso as he remembered Dumbledore hiring Firenze without consulting her first.

Nick watched with a look of longing on his pearly face as Ron Weasley continued to shovel down the chicken as though it had been him who had not eaten for over 500 years. Chicken was a distant memory now, people said that alot of food tastes like chicken and now Nick could rarely…No, never say that now. He had to let food go stale like cheese, or garlic or something strong like that. Nick remembered there being chicken on his last meal. “Enjoy it while you can” said Nick as Ron started to choke as Hermione patted his back.

Another defence against the dark arts teacher gone again thought Nick as Umbridge was chased by Peeves. It was never the same when he was taught at Hogwarts and when he taught at Hogwarts. When he learnt how to defend himself against the dark arts or taught it, was delivered with pure profession but for over fifty years Nick had seen over fifty teachers come and go in the dreaded position. Umbridge had to be ranked somewhere near the top for the worst teachers, next to Quirrell of course. Nick would have loved to be like Binns and still teaching.
