Neville couldn’t help it; he had to nap, as that day had been utterly exhausting. Instead of doing his homework in the library, he chose a table and buried his head in his arms. Soon his snores echoed around the library, making Madam Pince very suspicious.
“Neville.” Luna chided him gently and he moaned. “Neville, Madam Pince isn’t going to be happy if she finds you like this.” She lifted his head up.
“But I’m tired!”
“I will help you to the Gryffindor common room,” she offered as she helped him up.
He nodded sluggishly and leaned against her. “Okay.”

Honeydukes was a dream for anyone who had a sweet tooth. That is why Neville stopped by on his first trip to Hogsmeade. The thirteen-year-old marveled at the sight and spent two galleons on just candy (it was his monthly allowance—he wouldn’t tell Gran what he’d spent it on, though).
There was a rendition of The Quibbler that was edible. He thought of Luna automaticallly. Reaching for it, he placed a few sickles down on the counter to buy it for her. Then he felt suddenly nervous—what if she didn’t like it? Hopefully she had a sweet tooth.

The cauldron was bubbling madly, much to Neville’s dismay. Everyone else’s was perfectly simmering. Why did he have to have such a hard time with potion-making?
Fighting back the urge to cry, he added a sprinkle of gurdyroots. They didn’t help. Instead, they exploded his cauldron, spraying him with sticky fluid.
“Longbottom! Go to the washroom and clean yourself up!” Snape commanded, cleaning up the mess with his wand.
Whimpering, Neville dashed out. As he reached the washroom, he spotted Luna, who looked at him with a startled expression.
“Don’t even ask,” he mumbled, hiding his sticky face from her.

“I’ve been called a chicken for my whole life,” Neville confessed to Luna as they strode down the Hogwarts corridors.
“Why is that? You’re in Gryffindor, aren’t you?” She turned her wide gaze upon him, making him feel like she was reading his mind.
He bit his lip. “I don’t know; I guess they’ve never seen that part of me that’s brave. I haven’t seen it either, and I wonder if I ever will.”
“It’ll come in time,” Luna assured him, patting his arm. He smiled feebly at her confidence in him. She was the least chicken-ish person he knew.

“I can’t do it. I can’t think of a thought happy enough,” Neville groaned to Harry in the Room of Requirement.
“Of course you can, Neville,” Harry encouraged, showing him the wand movement. “Here, you can practice with Luna.”
Luna had accomplished the Patronus charm a few weeks ago. Smiling at Neville, she clasped his wand hand and went through the movement with him. “Try it now, and say it with confidence.”
Neville thought hard about the first time he’d met Luna. Happiness about her friendship welled inside him, and he felt like maybe—just maybe—he could do it.

He was riding into the night, the cold wind blowing across his face. Beside him, Luna was riding calmly on her Thestral (side-saddle).
“You alright?” she asked him over the roaring of the wind.
He couldn’t find any words to speak, but nodded jerkily. This was terrifying—beyond terrifying, to be exact. He never wanted to ride a Thestral again. The beating of its wings against his legs scared everything out of him.
Meanwhile, Luna smiled at Neville, watching his attempt at bravery. They’d arrive soon. “Keep holding on,” she reminded the Gryffindor, patting the neck of her Thestral fondly.

The snow was swirling outside in a blur and Neville had forgotten his mittens up in his dormitory. Luna was walking beside him lightly, as if she walked in foot-high snow every day. “How lovely the weather is!” she sighed, smiling at the sky.
“Er, yeah,” Neville agreed half-heartedly. His fingers were turning red with the cold and he clenched and unclenched them to keep them moving.
Noticing his hands, Luna muttered, “That won’t do. Accio mittens!” Two plaid mittens flew into her hands moments later and she handed them to Neville, who thanked her and put them on gratefully.

“You have nice eyes,” Luna complimented Neville with a wistful smile. Those big, misty blue eyes met the dark brown ones.
Her eyes bored into his, and he felt like he could not look away. It seemed like at these moments, she was the only one he was looking at, and he couldn’t take his eyes away from hers. The way she looked at him as if she knew all his secrets (he wouldn’t be surprised if she did) didn’t bother him too much. He knew it was just Luna, Loony Lovegood, who he had now a special fondness for.

“What do you think the future holds?” Neville asked Luna as they found a comfortable place along the castle walls under the autumn sun.
“It looks bright,” she responded, running her hand over the blades of green grass.
“Even though Snape is now Headmaster? And those awful Death Eaters are professors?” Neville demanded, scrunching up his face in dislike.
Luna nodded pleasantly. “The good and the bad in life have the distinctions an individual gives them. I’ll look on the bright side. Yes, there will be lots of violence, but it’ll be all for the better when Voldemort is defeated.”

Neville couldn’t help mooching quills from Luna; he didn’t want to because he always felt foolish and unprepared for doing so, but frequently his quills would break when he was doing homework with her. He constantly (and unsuccessfully) tried to buy an extra quill
Thankfully, she was gracious about supplying him with quills. She thought nothing of giving him yet another quill, as she enjoyed watching his round face blushing pink. She didn’t tell him, but it made her laugh inside.
“Luna?” Neville asked tentatively, holding up a damaged quill.
“Of course, Neville,” she said cheerfully, pulling out a bagful.

Flipping through her copy of Hogwarts, A History, Luna read every page with interest. When she found a page on the greenhouses, her mind instantly jumped to Neville, who could be found there often.
He was a nice bloke in her opinion. Lately he’d taken to sitting by her in the library and she couldn’t deny that from their discussions and the time they spent together, she fancied him.
“Neville must be the kindest boy I know,” she said, patting the greenhouse diagram.
“What was that?” Neville’s voice came from behind a bookshelf.
Luna actually blushed, which was most unusual.

Professor Neville peeked his head into the classroom, trying to find the person he wanted to find so badly. She wasn’t anywhere in sight; he’s already checked the grounds and the main floor of Hogwarts.
Entering another classroom, he wondered where she could be. Footsteps echoed behind him; this made him jump and turn around.
There she stood, as willowy and surprised-looking as ever. “Neville!” she exclaimed happily, walking the length of the classroom to wrap her arms around him.
As she hugged him, he didn’t want to let go—he wanted them to stay in this classroom, together, forever.

“Here, this plant won’t hurt you,” Neville told Luna, holding up a giant geranium cluster towards her. “It just needs to be repotted.”
“Okay,” she conceded, smiling at him. He caught her eye and smile nervously, shifting his feet. They were so close, and at that moment it seemed like—just maybe—something would happen. His face moved closer to Luna’s and hers to his; each could feel their hearts pounding, but suddenly—
“Achoo!” Neville covered his nose, flushing furiously. “Sorry, I must be allergic to geraniums!”
Luna patted his shoulder and removed the geraniums. “No worries,” she assured him.

With a flourish of her wand, Luna easily untied the double knot of her shoelaces.
“Wow, how did you do that?” Neville exclaimed in awe, mouth open. He doubted he could do that if he tried to a gazillion years!
Luna chuckled. “You just wave your wand like this.” She performed a series of small, complicated-looking waves.
Neville just gaped. “Yeah, I don’t think I can do it.”
“Sure you can.” She reached for his hand, which was grasping the wand. “Swish to the right, left, up, down, twist it forty-five degrees, and make a jabbing motion towards the shoelaces.”

“Hey, Longbottom, I heard you have a Pureblood girlfriend! Guess you’ve at least made one good choice in your life, then,” Draco jeered, sniggering. Neville reddened.
“Shove off, Malfoy,” Seamus growled at him.
Draco didn’t pay attention to him. “So, who is it, Longbottom? Your second cousin or something?” Crabbe and Goyle chuckled stupidly.
“I don’t have a girlfriend!” Neville protested, still blushing.
“He spends quite a lot of time with Luna Lovegood, though,” Pansy shrieked.
“Loony Lovegood?” Draco guffawed loudly. “Your decision making is worse than your potions skills.”
Bristling, Neville drew his wand, but Seamus held him back.

Luna’s thin form slipped into the Hospital Wing, where a lone figure lay under the bed sheets. Madam Pomfrey was dozing in her office.
“Neville, how are you?” she asked, though he was asleep. She lightly stroked his head. There were scars all over his face from being tortured by the Carrows. “Not the Cruciatus curse again?” Tears welled in her eyes. He was so brave.
His skin was inflamed under her fingers. The moon reflected in the shiny floor as she arranged the sheets around him so it would be more comfortable.
“Sleep well,” she whispered, kissing his cheek.

The gape in the stone wall was so obvious that no one could miss it. It was almost as high as Luna and twice as wide. Luna and Neville passed it on one of their strolls and stopped to examine it.
“It’s clearly the work of a nargle colony,” Luna observed solemnly, bending down to get a closer look.
Neville learned not to laugh too loudly at her crazy notions. “No, I heard some Slytherin kicked his fellow classmate into the wall,” he argued.
“Nargles. It must be.” Luna stayed true to her stance.
“Whatever you say,” he replied, shrugging.

Luna twirled about in her sunflower-yellow dress robes Dad had bought her for Fleur and Bill’s wedding, even though it was a month away. She loved the feel of the fabric on her legs as she swished into the kitchen.
A knock at the door made her float to the entrance. It was Neville!
“Hi Luna! Wow, you look…nice!” he stuttered.
Luna smiled serenely. “Thank you.” She motioned him inside.
Still struck by how bright, yet beautiful, she looked, stepped in. “Where’d you get those dress robes?”
“A family friend made them for us; we rarely go to Madam Malkin’s.”

Luna touched the charms dangling from her necklace and ears. She was glad to have the protection from ancient wizards and witches. No one would believe her if she told them that her glittering jewelry was actually useful.
“That’s a nice necklace,” Neville complimented.
“Thanks. It’s a charm—very effective. You should try wearing it sometime.” Luna smiled vaguely at him. He wouldn’t look half bad in it. “Here, try it on. I’m sure I’ll survive a few minutes without it on.”
She unclasped the necklace from her neck, but Neville quickly protested, saying he needed to write his Gran.

The bludger was coming after him! He swerved downward more swiftly than he thought he could and zoomed around a pillar. That was a close one. Fast, flying objects were a great fear of his; coupled with riding a broom, it was torture. But he was flying well! He couldn’t believe his eyes. Where was Harry? Wasn’t Harry supposed to be the seeker?
Neville scanned the pitch, but soon was plummeting to the ground.
“Ahh!”
Someone pinched him and he woke up, papers askew, at a table in the library. Luna cocked her head at him, then resumed her reading.

“But sometimes I wonder whether the Sorting Hat put me in the right place,” Neville was confiding to Luna as they walked from the Room of Requirement. “I’m just not brave enough.”
Luna sighed. “You are very brave; you have to tap into it. Have confidence in yourself and don’t let anyone tell you you’re less than what you are. It’s very important to believe in yourself, after all.”
“You say it like it’s so easy.” Neville was picturing the Sorting Hat in his mind, hovering above his head.
“You’ll see in time; remember to be patient,” she replied mysteriously.

“I don’t believe in this type of game where secrets and silly things are forced upon a victim,” Luna replied, though her answer was not haughty. “I suppose you’ll have to find someone else to play.”
Ginny ignored her. “Okay, I’ll pick a dare then. Go up to Neville and tell him that you love him.”
“That’s folly,” Luna repeated, feeling a very slight blush creep to her cheeks.
“Looks like someone has a crush!” Ginny cried, laughing and not pursuing the matter further.

The water was rippling slightly as Neville and Luna strode across the lawn by the lake. Many students were outside enjoying the summer sun.
“Hey, Longbottom! Why don’t you come over here and let me zap you?” Draco sneered, laughing.
“That sounds ridiculous,” Luna commented, steering Neville away. “Zapping people, however they do it, doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience at all.”
“I think that was the point,” Neville replied.
Luna pondered. “I zapped something only once, and it was my kneazle’s fur. I suppose it didn’t like it, because it had a very short life after I’d done it.”

What had happened to the former Muggle Studies teacher at Hogwarts frightened everyone.
“I took that class,” Luna whispered to Neville as some students passed. “The professor was a nice lady; she almost made me want to be a Muggle for a day.” Her eyes clouded with sadness. “I am going to miss her terribly.”
“Me too,” Neville sympathized with her.
“She never taught you, though.”
“Yeah, but…still.” He thought he must be the lamest person ever. “She was…a nice witch.” He’d never met her, but he wanted to comfort Luna somehow. He could sense it wasn’t working too well.

“Excuse me, have you seen my toad, Trevor?” Why did he always have to get lost? It was his second year at Hogwarts, yet Neville did not manage to learn how to control his pet.
“Er, no,” a Ravenclaw replied, furrowing his eyebrows and returning to gazing out the window.
Puffing and red in the face, Neville pushed through the crowd. “Has anyone seen a toad?” he asked, but no one heard him.
“Is this him?” a blonde girl with big eyes asked, holding up Trevor.
“Yes! Thank you!” Neville cried, clasping the toad tightly, his face still torch red.
