“Pass the chicken please Hannah.”
Ernie was talking to her, but she wasn’t really listening. She was watching the Gryffindor table where Neville was eating alone. She felt sorry for him, he looked quite miserable. None of the other Gryffindors were talking to Neville but it wasn’t really his fault. Sirius Black had broken in to the Gryffindor tower using Neville’s list of passwords.
“Hannah, pass the chicken.”
Neville was leaving his dinner half finished, his glum expression serving as an explanation.
“Well if you’re not going to pass me the chicken, I’ll get it myself!” Ernie leaned across her and grabbed the platter.

79. author’s choice: Tangy
Martha and Clifford Longbottom were hiding at the bottom of the garden with a huge box of Bertie Bott’s Beans. They had sneaked it out of their mummy’s birthday presents.
She picked out a yellow one and chewed it. It was horrible but she said “Yum! Tangy!”
Clifford grabbed another yellow. The five year old put it in his mouth, but only for a moment.
“Yuck!” He spat it out into the grass. “It’s earwax!”
She giggled, it was so easy to to trick him.
“There you are!”
They looked up and saw... Daddy!
“It wasn’t my idea!” They chorused.

Taking In The View.
80. Author's choice: Castle
The young couple sat in the grounds of the ruined castle, looking out over the deep valley below them. The girl rested her head on the shoulder of her young friend.
The view of valley was breath taking.
“I’ve never been here before.”
“Gran’s house is over there, behind those trees.”
“Oh.”
The couple sat and stared at the view, unremarkable really, until the bell sounds that the warden is going to lock up the castle.
“Will you come and see me tomorrow?”
“Everyday. We’ve got forever now.”
It was an odd thing to say, but she seemed to understand.

If Mum Says No...
“How did you get here?”
“Portkey, how’d you think?”
“Less of the cheek young man.”
Clifford shifted nervously, realising that he had pushed his father too far.
“Why are you here?” Neville’s voice was stern, a sign that he was very angry. Usually, Hannah had to be the disciplinarian.
“I need some...”
“Gold?” Neville gave his sixteen year old son a forbidding look.
“Aww, come on dad!”
Neville looked out at the flora and fauna of Palau and shook his head.
“This is absolutely the last time, you hear...”
Clifford grinned. If mum says no, ask dad. He thought smugly.

Hannah was fuming. She heard the door close and Neville’s travel bag hit the floor.
“Sweetheart?” He stepped into the room.
“Don’t sweetheart me!”
She watched as his expression went from confusion to understanding to guilt.
“Got there have you?” She folded her arms.
“What was I supposed to do?”
“How about saying; go home where I am going to punish your sorry backside for the rest of your natural life?”
“Hannah, please-”
“He’s always going to ignore me if he knows he can get what he wants from you!”
Clifford listened from the kitchen, feeling guilty. For now.

84. Angry
Ernie had been rude about Neville again. Hannah was angry with him.
“He’s nice! Leave him alone.”
“It was just a joke, Hannah!”
“I don’t care Ernie, it was mean and NOT funny!”
She stormed away from Ernie, not watching where she was going or who she was heading towards.
She heard a quiet, grumbling voice say, “Ernie’s a pompous jerk, you should dump him.”
Her eyes widened as she looked at Neville, who seemed to be filling up with boiling hot water from the inside. He was running away from her before she had the chance to say anything.

68. Roar
As Hannah watched Neville standing up to the Carrows yet again, deflecting their attention from a younger student yet again, she felt the blood roaring through her ears as her heart pounded.
She winced as she saw a spell hit him, causing him to crumple to the floor. She stayed in her seat, but only after a warning look from Dean.
She almost wished that he wouldn’t do it but she couldn’t ask him not to.
As the Carrows left the hall, she rushed to him, complimenting him and trying to make him aware how much he meant to her.

2. Muggle Studies
Usually she could ignore it... but not today. Today, the vile woman was really getting to Hannah, talking about how filthy and stupid muggles were and how they had driven wizards into hiding with their violent and piggish ways.
She tried not to listen, to sketch herself somewhere that she wouldn’t have to listen on her parchment, but nothing worked. She glanced at Neville, biting her lip.
The bell rang and she stuffed her things in her bag, running as fast as she dared from the room. She suddenly felt his strong, familiar arms around her and her tears fell.

10. Arithmancy
Hannah sat with the accounts, trying to make the long column of numbers add up. She had never exactly been an arthimancy whizz, but she could usually do a better job than this with ordinary mathematics. She closed her eyes and put her head in her hands, sighing.
“Hannah! Can you come in here for a second?”
When she didn’t respond, he poked his head through the door.
“Just say that you knew they were made for each other when you saw them dancing at the Yule Ball twelve years ago and you don’t know what’s taken them so long.”

5. Astronomy
Hannah had always hated Astronomy, mainly because it kept her from her bed and was held at the top of a freezing cold tower in all weathers, but never more than right now.
She could hear Hagrid’s dog and then Hagrid and then Professor McGonagall? Something was going on, but from where she was sitting she couldn’t see anything! She snuck a glance at Neville, he seemed to be able to see what was happening and it didn’t look good.
Catching up with him on the stairs, she listened in horror to what he had seen.
“That vile old COW!”

86. Daring
Hannah watched him making a stand her heart in her mouth. She had tried to drag him back but she was routed to the ground in fear.
Voldemort was forcing the sorting hat onto his head and setting it alight. She screamed but the sound stuck in her throat.
And then everything moved so quickly. She ran forward, daring to believe that he could be alright.
She couldn’t get to him. There were to many people, to many creatures, too many duels between the two of them.
She didn’t care about winning in that moment. She only cared about him.

Hannah had been watching him for weeks. He was absolutely exhausted, he was battered and bruised but he was hiding it. Or at least he was trying to. Ginny and Luna were missing and so now it was up to him to lead the group, keep everyone’s spirits up.
She took him to a quiet corner and healed his latest injury.
“How are you?”
“I’m fine.” He told her bracingly.
“Neville, this is me. You can drop the act. I won’t tell anyone.”
He looked at her, blushed and then kissed her.
“Thank you.”
“What for?”
“You make me brave.”

It happened again. Hannah walked past Neville, he blushed and the boys started to laugh. She frowned.
“What’s up?” Susan asked, feeling that she already knew the answer.
“Nothing.”
“Oh come on Hannah! They’re just boys, egging each other on to be stupid.”
Hannah face crumpled with consternation.
“I thought...” She glanced back at Neville and frowned again as he resolutely avoided her gaze. “Oh never mind what I thought. Obviously I was wrong.”
“Who’re you going to the ball with?”
Hannah bit her lip. “No-one yet. I had hoped...” She glanced back at Neville, who was still blushing.

Hannah had seen him glancing at her in the lesson. She had seen him glancing at her at lunch and at breakfast too. All week.
She was tempted to ask him if she had something on the end of her nose or if she her shoe laces were untied without her realising. He was sweet but this was getting annoying. It wasn’t like he fancied her and was going to ask her out. If that was true, he would have asked when she split up with Ernie.
“Hannah?”
“Yes?”
“Wou-would you go to Hogsmeade, with me? ”
She blinked.
“Yes.”

Hannah look at him in horror, running out of the common room. She reappeared dressed head to toe in black.
“What are you dressed like that for?”
“Well, you said that I looked fat in that other dress. I don’t want Neville to think that he asked out elephant girl, do I?”
“No, but he doesn’t want to go out with a spider! It was a JOKE!” he called as she dashed out of the room again.

Hannah sat with Susan, listening to Neville talk to Dumbledore’s Army. He was warning them to be cautious... not to take unnecessary risks... to be clever...
Susan whispered “He’s really changed recently, have you noticed?”
Hannah smiled. The shy, slightly bumbling boy of times past had gone. In front of them was a confident, highly skilled and charismatic (in her opinion) leader.
“So, just remember; don’t go it alone! Please, look after each other.”
The meeting ended and people began to leave in small groups, a few hanging around to ask Neville questions. Hannah watched him proudly, her true Gryffindor.

42. Portraits
If you walked through the house, the portraits on the wall would look oddly familiar. An old woman, with stiff posture and a hat that is topped by a stuffed vulture glares down at you from the canvas above the fireplace, as thought she is demanding to know why you are in her home the family portrait. If you really thought about it, you would know the name of the young sandy haired man with the round smiling face who is standing with his arm around his pretty, pink cheeked blonde wife.
His name'd be on the tip of your tongue...

8. Potions
It had happened again.
“Mr Longbottom, if I picked your brains, would I find anything of value?” Snape sneered, looking at the congealed mess that was supposed to be Neville’s potion. Neville blushed furiously, looking at the floor as the Slytherins laughed sycophantically.

“Miss Abbott, what colour should your potion be?” Snape asked.
“Green sir.” Hannah shifted uncomfortably.
“So why is it pink?” He sneered.
“Because I made a mistake. I’m not perfect, sir.” She looked up at him defiantly, feeling really quite reckless.
“Clearly. You are treading on thin ice Miss Abbott, very thin.” Snape swept away, bat like.

Neville looks from his newspaper and notices you sitting in your house (or wherever you are), reading this rather diverting drabble.
“If you could be magical and cast a spell, which one would it be? Would you like to swap worlds for a little while? I’ve been thinking that if I was one of you, I’d be a photographer, so that I could travel the world and take photographs of all the amazing muggle plants out there.”
Hannah walks in and sees you, smiling.
“Oh, hello, lovely to see you. Are you staying for a cuppa? You’re more than welcome.” Inspired by this photo, which I saw in the galleries here on SS.

17. Cauldron
Neville hated potions. He couldn’t see the point of a potion which made a person forgetful. He could be forgetful without all the effort of making a potion.
He looked down at his potion, trying to remember the rhyme Hannah had made up to help him remember the ingredients.
“Mr Longbottom, must I stand here and recite the ingredients to prevent you omitting them?”
Neville looked up at Professor Snape quickly and then looked back at his cauldron.
“N-no, s-sorry sir.”
Professor Snape swept away in his bat like manner and Neville whispered the rhyme to himself again.

Neville stuck to the back of the crowd, trying not to look at the thestrals. He tried to think about Hannah, tried to think about owls, quidditch, the greenhouses, Droobles Best Blowing Gum, fish and chips, lemonade, sticky toffee pudding, anything... anything but look at the thestral and admit that he could see it. No, no, no, not him. No.
Except, of course, Hagrid had to ask who could see one.
Neville glanced at Umbridge and then back at Hagrid, swallowed hard and raised his hand in what he hoped was a show of confident surety.
Confident surety? Not him.
