Transfiguration Lesson Two: Tortoise and the Rabbit
It was one of those rare afternoon's in early March that is wasn't raining. In fact, though still pretty cold outside the sun was out and shining through the few clouds that were in the sky.
The door to Professor Stewart's classroom was wide open as per usual before a lesson was about to begin. As you enter the room you'll notice that everything is as it should be, the desks and chairs neatly aligned in rows, the curtains on the windows pulled open allowing the sun to shine in. Nothing is out of place nor is there any signs of what you will be doing during this afternoons lesson.
Professor Stewart her was leaning against the front of her desk, arms folded lightly over her chest, a warm smile on her face as she waited for the students arrival. Just to the right of her desk was the usual large chalk board this time bearing the words...
Quote:
Please take a seat and feel free to quietly talk among yourselves until the lesson begins.
OOC: Welcome to the second OOC Transfiguration of the term! If you don't know them by now please take a look at our Rules. Class will start in about 24 hours had begun!
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy quickly entered the classroom with a tired smile. "Hello, Professor Stewart!" Daisy greeted the teacher before sitting down in one of the chairs in the middle row of desks. She slowly retrieved her supplies from her bag and placed them on her desk.
Maisie Dimple was happy. She was smiling. Her face was turned towards the spring sunlight. She hadn't just had a heartbreaking letter from home. She hadn't spent all morning crying in her dormitory. Maisie Dimple was fine.
As she walked past the Professor, she said, "Hello!" brightly. Everything was fine.
She took a seat in a beam of sunlight, hoping that would mask her a bit.

Transfiguration was something Natalie could get behind. It was simple, practical magic. Not EASY, but it was straightforward. No translating tea leaves and other nonsense. You just learned a spell, focused REALLY hard and turned a mouse into a water goblet. She wasn't very good at it, but at least she knew it was possible.
Therefore, Natalie was in a better mood when she came into the Transfiguration classroom that day. She smiled silently at the professor and then sat down near the front of the classroom. Nothing gave away what they would be learning today, so she just set her book down on her desk, tucked her cold fingers into her robes and waited for the class to begin.

Transfiguration was a core subject. It wasn't one she could inconsequentially skip and for that reason, the Ravenclaw continued to listlessly drag her feet as she entered the classroom. It wasn't for a lack of trying, but Jessa could no longer muster the enthusiasm she once felt for the subject and didn't think she ever would again. Some heart break was just too much to get over and suffice to say, her heart still hurt every time she thought about it.
"Good day, Professor." The greeting was barely audible, as it had grown in the last few months. She didn't return the warm smile, instead, she simple took her seat and began to unpack the things she would be needing for the lesson. It provided the needed distracted while she conditioned her mind for yet another Transfiguration lesson.
When everything was out, she turned her attention to the hands she now clasped on her desk, fidgeting with her fingers in an attempt to remain occupied. Only an hour to go.

Patrick scurried into the room, a bit out of breath. He always felt like he was rushing to transfiguration because he was usually coming from the complete opposite side of the castle. That and he was always afraid to not be early to a class. Some of his classmates and house mates were always skirting into the room right on time or a few seconds before class started. He still wondered how it was they did that and didn't panic. He figured that maybe one day he would know, maybe by the time he was a older student he wouldn't be so worried.
"Hello Professor." He said quietly before slipping off to the left side of the room ready for class to begin, wondering when the other students would arrive so he might have a partner near by to help him stay on track.

The only thing that Skylar didn't like about Transfiguration was the fact that the classroom was SO FAR AWAY. Not as far away as Astronomy or Divination, but still, sixth floor was far. Especially when you'd been awake since the morning, with other classes and studies. Fortunately she'd only just been in the library, so it wasn't as far as it could have been...
Entering the classroom, she wondered if the other Professor Stewart informed her cousin about her antics in Muggle Studies. Antics that weren't her fault, but was simply Skylar standing up for what was right, which she got punished for trying to be fair. Very annoying, to say the least.
"Good afternoon, Professor!" she greeted, as she took a seat near the front. Because OWLs were so close and while she didn't feel unprepared, these last classes could contain crucial insights and make the difference between a pass or fail. An E versus an O.

Well, Transfiguration as a subject was better than Charms. Perhaps that was the positive note that Vivian was hanging onto as she made her way to the Professor Stewart's classroom. Peeking inside, Vivian offered a smile to the woman. Nothing seemed odd at all. The chairs and desks were aligned as usual, and there was clearly no sign or give-away of their lesson for the afternoon. Were the professors always aiming to surprise their students? Ancient Runes, last time, had skrewts attacking them. Good Merlin knew what was coming for them in this class.
"Good afternoon, professor," Vivian greeted her and took a seat beside Skylar. Right in the front, because the last few months before judgment day OWLs were important. "Hey," the prefect said and settled her bag beside her.

Transfiguration was definitely one of the hardest branches of magic taught at Hogwarts, and homework in this subject often made Emmeline's head spin. Still, at least it was wand magic and not all awful like Potions and Herbology. Plus, Cami taught Transfiguration, so Emmeline felt like she HAD to be pretty positive about these lessons no matter what. Family support and all that, you know?
The second year bounced into her guardian's sixth-floor classroom with a biiig grin on her face. As the snow faded and spring weather flooded the grounds, Sirius became wayyy more active and wanted to be outside more and stuff. Not that her cruppy minded the snow so much, really, but Emmeline definitely appreciated all the sunshine and the relative lack of cold that March brought. She wasn't the biggest fan ever of loads of snow and coldness, especially when it came to running around outside with her cruppy. The only downside to better weather was that the twelve-year-old girl didn't really want to be stuck inside the castle and going to lessons when the weather was super nice. She tended to spend more time daydreaming in lessons and counting down the minutes 'till she could go get her cruppy out of his kennel again.
She was in a fairly cheerful mood today, though. Nothing really disturbing ever happened in Transfiguration, not like in Divination when weird, scary things could happen and stuff. She beamed at Cami as she bounced her way over to her usual seat kind of in the middle of the room, and called out: "Hiiiii, Professor!" She was always super careful to call her guardian by her title in lessons and stuff, mhm.

One thing Stasya had needed to learn rather quickly this term was to try to ignore the things that were bothering her. Of course, as she’d told Professor Hirsch way back at the beginning of term, she looked at it more as being strong, but then there’d only been one thing bothering her then. Now there was the crazy blood stuff, which really bothered her because animals, and the dorm ransacking, and obviously the absence of her papa hadn’t gone away. She was pretty sure it never would. But it was also almost spring, so she had to be more cheerful. If anything, she was immensely curious if there were going to be any new creature babies soon. Maybe even new unicorn babies in the forest, not that she’d ventured anywhere near there since that time last term.
She’d still managed a bright smile for the professor as she’d walked into the classroom. “Good afternoon Professor Stewart!,” she greeted her bestie’s guardian, as she took her usual seat next to Emmeline, giving her bestie a smile even as she waved at the others who were already there she knew. Jessa, Vivian, Skylar…Hopefully this lesson wasn’t going to be quite as crazy as Muggle Studies. At least she was pretty sure Peeves wasn’t going to be an invited guest.

Etta liked Transfiguration, really. The lessons were rather eventful, fun and she really enjoyed learning new spells. Especially spells that would be useful at some point in the future. She entered the classroom, expecting to see something out of place as per usual.. but there was nothing. Well, this was interesting. She gave the professor a smile as she took a seat somewhere near the middle of the classroom.
“Hello, professor.” The prefect greeted politely as she sat down, leaning back against her seat as she wondered what the professor was going to be teaching them. Oh, well. She’d know soon enough so she simply waited for class to begin.

Derf had been a little on edge with Tranfiguration...mostly because he spent the majority of the lessons keeping an eye on Jessa in case she spontaneously combusted from frustration or something else....which was why as soon as he entered the classroom he made his way towards the vacant seat next to her although he was tempted to break tradition and sit next to Natalie after greeting the professor with a small smile.
".....you want a chocolate frog?" he whispered to her, already rummaging through his robe pockets for one.
The lack of ANYTHING in the room was...disconcerting to the Hufflepuff. Making something out of nothing? Complete conjuration? He could barely manage the most basic of Transfiguration spells...how was he supposed to manage an advanced form and branch of the subject?
Spoiler alert. He wasn't.
He was doomed.

Shay was in a good mood. She she arrived at Transfiguration class ready for anything. Well, at least she hoped she was ready for anything. When she entered the class, there was no obvious clue as to what the lesson would be about. That probably made her more curious than she'd be when there were hints around. Shay guessed she'd just have to wait and see.
"Hello Professor Stewart", Shay said cheerfully. Then seeing the message on the board, she found an empty seat and got comfortable. After taking out her parchment, quill and textbook, she sat back and waited. Class should be starting any minute now.

"Hello, Miss Morrison." She smiled. A quick look towards the door showed no one else was coming in. It was time to get started.
Pulling her wand from her robes a silent charm was cast with a flick of her wrist at the door to which it closed with a quiet "click". The lesson had no begun and anyone coming in now would be considered late. Keeping her wand in her hand, Professor Stewart looked around at the students sat at their desks before her.
"Good afternoon, everyone, I hope you've all been having a good day so far," Camilla greeted them all once more. "Now I'm sure you're all a bit curious as to what we'll be doing today and I assure you that we'll get to that in just a few moments. First I would like to speak with you all about Transubstantial Transfiguration or more commonly know as Transformation spells. What do you know about them? What are they used for? With a flick of her wrist the words Transubstantial Transfiguration (Transformation) appeared on the board beside her.
OOC: The lesson has begun but you're welcome to jump right in and act like you've been here the entire time! You have about 30 hours to answer one or all of the questions, wrong answers are always welcome so don't worry if your student doesn't know what we're talking about!

Ooooooooh!
The topic had already caught her attention. Transformation? Were they really going to take up this lesson for today? If so, Vivian was totally in and down for it. The prefect listening intently and took out a fresh piece of parchment. She quickly scribbled and mentally noted that she was going to rewrite these again after class. She just needed her notes to be neat and pretty for her OWLs soon, okay?
But ayway, back to the topic. Vivian raised her hand to share. "Professor, I believe the animagi and metamorphmagi fall under this branch of Transfiguration," she offered.

Natalie's blue eyes moved around the room as more students came in. Her eyes landed on Derf when his fluffy blonde hair made an appearance. She smiled and waved at him, but both actions faltered midway when he went in a different direction and sat by Jessa instead. Her smile turned into a small frown and she quickly tucked her hand into her robes pocket and tried not to think anything of it. Maybe he just didn't see her...
It took a moment for her brain to refocus and listen to what the professor was saying because at first it sounded like a bit of gobbledygook. Transubstantial Transfiguration, or... transformation.
Well, wasn't all transfiguration transformation? You were essentially transforming something into another something... Uhh. Right? To be honest, she didn't know the difference just yet. So, good thing she was in class, right?
Stealthy Ninja Queen | Snake For Life | waddling baker | binge royalty ♚
Patrick sat there thinking about things. Well if they were transforming things and this was substantial it sounded like living things. He sat and listened to a few of the other students. Vivian spoke up and he agreed with her answer, "I think i'm with Vivian, people transforming or animals transforming." With his answer he felt as if he was going to be in for a really strange experience in class today.

Derf caught the manner in which Natalie's expression shifted and felt kinda helpless. So...his hand went into his hair for loads of ruffling as the professor finally began the lesson. Which brought about a HUGE sigh of relief in that they were NOT going to be doing any conjuration today. Thank MERLIN.
Relaxing into his seat a bit, the Hufflepuff took a moment to muse over the Transubstantial Transfiguration. Really was, you know, drilling the point home now, wasn't it? Although considering there were four branches of the subject he supposed this was one way to make sure you knew what you were talking about. Given that, you know....it wasn't UNDOING a spell...or producing something out of thin air...or banishing it into non-existence.
Although, technically, if one were undoing a transformation spell by means of untransfiguring...then wasn't that also a transformation spell?
He probably should not ask about technicalities in class though and simply refer to his textbook later. It only ever cause Jessa's head to go spinning off into orbit.
"But...TECHNICALLY...isn't that Trans-species Transformation and not Transubstantial Transfiguration?" Derf asked upon raising his hand at what the two Slytherins were discussing. "Also...is it...um...really right...or fair...or accurate I suppose...for us to classify metamorphagi and werewolves in the same category as animagi? Since...you know...their transformation magic is in their BLOOD and not something that wizardingkind can learn? " He paused to ruffle his hair a bit, chewing on the inside of his cheeck since he has sorta just gotten off topic and was now concerned about technicalities. Again. "What we did previously...turning Marimo Moss Balls into Betta splendens is a more accurate display of...um....pure... Transubstantial Transfiguration...I think...but things kinda overlap loads...like...human transfigurations and Trans-species Transformation...cause those are a subbranch and stuff..."
His thoughts were now running circles in his head. Lots and lots and lots of frantic circles.

There were A LOT of things she knew about transformation spells, a ton. All her reading, it'd be odd of her not to but that didn't mean her hand would be raised any time soon for the simple reason that the question was far too wide and vague for her to give any kind of substantial input.
For instance, Viv and Patrick talking about animagi which would fall under transformation but wasn't meant to be confused as they were apparently different things.
Was the Professor referring to the overarching theme or....? Because if so...those two weren't actually, technically right. Were she still in the business of getting her heart broken, the young girl may have asked. Instead, she remained silent where she sat, waiting to see where the lesson was going. It helped to know that should she decide to go through with her walk out this time, Professor Hirsch would be on her side. He'd been a big help back then and had been nothing but supportive and understanding of her distress.
It was a little like a kid on the playground, ready to run back to their dad the moment something went wrong but the imagery didn't bother her.
Whatever preserved her mental health.

Skylar beamed when Vivian sat beside her; at least she was taking these studies seriously. Not that her other dormmates weren't - Skylar would have been on the case way too quickly if they hadn't been - but you know, it was nice to have someone close to you to have your back. They helped each other like that.
And now class was starting, about Transformational Transfiguration. Which was ... animagi? Curious look over at best friend and her answer, to which Patrick seemed eager to be on board with. It made sense though, going from the literal translation of the word, which she was grateful for her Latin class more than just for a boy reason now, because it gave her an edge on translations.
But animagi wasn't something that could be taught in one lesson - it took at least a year or more of hard work and training. Didn't it? And Professor Stewart had mentioned about transformation spells, which meant no to animagi. Or at least in the permanent sense, but one could learn spells to temporarily transform themselves as she was she sure she recalled reading about in the Triwizard tournament of 1994.
"Quite literally, transubstantial means across substance, in Latin. Transfiguration is from the Latin, Transfigurare, which is to change figure of. So combined, Transubstantial Transfiguration would mean to change the substance and figure of something. But you mentioned Transformation spells; animagi refers to a more permanent transformation? There are spells used to change temporarily our appearance into something else, yes?"

Transubstantial transfiguration? That sparked absolutely nothing in Zoryn's mind. Transformation spells though? That sounded way easier. "They probably transform stuff, Professor," and that was the genius answer that Zoryn had to share with the class. Man, people were SO lucky to have lessons with her and hear all of her revolutionary thoughts and ideas. The people of Hogwarts were truly blessed to be sharing a classroom with the most iconic intellectual mind of their generation.
You're very welcome, friends and foes. Zoryn Spinnet is here to help educate your young, developing minds once again! Might as well let her trade spots with (the better) Professor Stewart. Zoryn would totally be a wonderful teacher.
Mhm.
Anyways, was class over yet?

Unfortunately for Ronan, his lack of sleep was catching up with him big time. So much so, that he'd fallen asleep in the library while studying for OWLS and was now late for Transfiguration, which meant that he was now trying to sneak in without being noticed.
He shut the door quietly and walked softly to a seat in the back row of desks and sat. Now, what we're they talking about? Transubstantial Transfiguration? "It has to do with Animagi and stuff. But definitely not metamorphmagi, since that's more of a genetic thing or werewolves, since that's more of a 'bite and you get it' thing." Wait, were they going to start on the journey towards becoming Animagi? Because that would be cool. Though, sort of unfair to the seventh years, since that was supposed to take a long time and they were graduating in three months.
He really wanted to be an animagi all of a sudden.

Etta continued to doodle on her parchment, not really paying attention to what the professor was talking about. She was too busy drawing her boyfriend’s face.. he really did have a nice face, didn’t he? .. when she realised that people were raising their hands and answering questions. Wait, what was the question? What were they discussing? BLINK. She looked up to find the words Transformation Transformation on the board. Ah. Okay.
... did she really have to answer though? “I... don’t think I have anything new to add, Professor.” Etta said, feeling quite embarrassed. She obviously needed to pay more attention in class. Ugh.

"They most certainly are. Both Animagus and Metamorphmagus would be in this branch of Transfiguration. They would fall under the sub-types of Transformation known as Human Transformation. Lycanthropy would also be in this category." Professor Stewart nodded waving her wand at the board to add all of this there for the students to see.
SPOILER!!: Natalie!

A quiet student never bothered Camilla unless of course they weren't paying attention. Natalie seemed to be paying attention or she at least had her things out to be taking down notes so this was good.
SPOILER!!: Patrick!

With his answer he felt as if he was going to be in for a really strange experience in class today.
"People transforming would be known as Human transfiguration and animals transforming into other animals, is that what you mean? If so that would be Trans-Species Transformations both of which are sub-areas of Transformation." She would get a little more into this in a few moments if he didn't quite understand.
SPOILER!!: Derf!

Professor Stewart wasn't in the least bit surprised when Derf spoke up. He brought up a fair bit of interesting points. "That would be correct. Those would fall under Trans-species Transformation which is a sub-area of Transubstantial Transfiguration." She nodded pausing a moment to let him continue. "That could be looked at many ways I'm sure. I feel they lump the three together because it's the person that is transforming into something else." They weren't going to be getting into this though during this lesson. Once more the women found herself nodding along with the Hufflepuff's words. "It would definitely be accurate to say that."
SPOILER!!: Jessa!

Another silent one. Camilla was happy to see that Jessa was also paying attention thought she had chosen not to answer the question.
SPOILER!!: Skylar!

A smile formed on the professor's lips as she listened to Skylar break down the meaning of Transubstantial Transfiguration. "Very good. While Animagi do quite literally change the form of something, something being themselves it takes many years worth of dedication and hard-work to become one. It isn't anything that could be taught in one lesson." She could answer questions of course and even go as fair as showing them how one would transform both into their creature and back again but that wasn't necessary. "Yes, there are several spells that do just that."
SPOILER!!: Zoryn!

The simple straight to the point answer made her smile. In the most simplest of terms the answer was correct. "It does transform things."
SPOILER!!: Ronan!

Good try but not good enough. Though he was quiet about his entrance, Camilla had noticed him entering the room right away being as to how she was looking directly at the class in it's entirety. "Five points from Gryffindor for being late to my lesson, Mister Carter. Don't let it happen again." Next time it will be an automatic detention for him. "Both Animagi and Metamorphmagi both fall under the sub-area of Human Transformation which goes along with Transformation."
SPOILER!!: Etta!

She didn't have anything else to add. Alright, that happened sometimes. Professor Stewart nodded. "That's alright." No harm done in not being able to add to the question.
"You all gave some really good answers so far." All of which were added onto the board with a flick of her wrist each time a student had answered the question. "Like I had mentioned earlier today we will be focusing on a branch of Transfiguration known as Transubstantial Transfiguration or Transformation. This branch of Transfiguration can be broken down into three sub-areas known as Human Transfiguration, Switching and Trans-Species Transformations."
There was a brief pause in her speaking as this was added onto the board. "As most of you have mentioned Animagi, Metamorphmagi and Lycanthropy all would fall under Human Transfiguration as these cause one's self to change. Animagi is a learned process which can take many years to accomplish, though the person may change to and form their animal form at will. Metamorhmagi is a witch or wizard who is born with the ability to change their appearance at will this can not be learned. Lycanthropy is when one is bitten by a werewolf while in their wolfish form during a full moon. There is no choice to the being whether or not they transform during the full moon." Yes she knew she was talking a lot but hopefully they were all paying attention.
"Switching. During their you are changing the physical features between two targets." This was also added onto the board as she spoke. "Trans-Species Transformations. This refer to transformations that change organisms from one species to another." Camilla glanced at them all to make sure they were all taking notes on this.
"Who can tell me a Transformation Spell, it's incantation if you know it and what the spell does?" It was a simple question to keep the lesson moving but just to make sure they understand what she meant she continued on, "What I mean is spells in which you take something and transform it into something else." There were plenty of them so with any luck they could get a really good list up on the board.
OOC: We're moving on to our second question! It's a fairly simple one, all Cami wants to know is if they can name a Transformation Spell and what the spell does! Try to name ones that aren't already being said if you can! I'll be moving on in about 24 hours or so!

Zoryn didn't know any spells that did whatever (the better) Professor Stewart was talking about, or if she did know... Zor wasn't about to take the time to try to think of one. Instead, something else her Professor had said struck a chord.
This switching stuff.
"Can you use switching spells to do the same stuff as using polyjuice?" 'Cause if so then how come people spent so much time and energy brewing that hard potion when they could just wave their wand and copy someone's look that way instead?!
