Default Transfiguration lesson: TBA

It's an unseasonably warm afternoon for early December. Outside the castle the sun is shining, and the weather isn't the only thing unusual about today. Upon entering the transfiguration classroom, it's apparent that the setup is completely different.

The usual rows of desks are gone, replaced with long tables. Several fish bowls sit along the tables, one for each student. Each bowl is filled with water and pebbles at the bottom; inside is a small fish. While the fish vary in shape and color, they are all approximately the same size. The fish swim around comfortably, with each bowl big enough to house 3-5 fish.

The only thing normal about the setup is Professor Carton standing in his usual place at the front of the classroom. ”Hello, welcome in!” he greets the students. ”Feel free to observe and interact with the fish, as long as you don't disturb them. Take your seats; we'll begin shortly.”

OOC: Welcome to Transfiguration! Please keep in mind that this is not the first IC lesson this term. Students would've had classes for about 3 months now. We'll start in ABOUT 24 HOURS. CLASS HAS STARTED!

Lesson Progression:
Q1: What are your fish's traits? Which traits would be most important to consider in transfiguration? Why?
Mini Activity
Main Activity part 1
Main Activity part 2
Q2: Why are some features difficult to replicate with transfiguration?

She hadn't said that out loud. Idiot. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Maddox set his jaw and didn't say anything to her. Best way to get past it was to stop acknowledging that it happened. It didn't seem like she suspected anything, so he just gave her a look and turned away. She could think whatever she liked.

He did smile and roll his eyes a bit, amused at Calliope's internal monologue. It would be funny if she'd just shouted that out, but just the fact that she thought it was still funny. He stifled a little laugh, trying to keep it quiet. He already messed up once and was not too keen to do it again. And he would choose to no longer acknowledge the tank full of him and his cards, because there was no way that would happen, anyway. But she really seemed to like that idea, for some reason.

As Professor Carton wrapped up the class, Maddox stood and picked up his bag. That was enough Calliope time for now. Didn't want any more unnecessary slip ups, and it was only because she made him such a chatty Cathy that happened in the first place. "Going to go study. See you." He left the classroom, trying to walk casually even though he knew she was watching him. Not to quickly, not too slow, just right. That way nothing would be wrong.

Calliope tapped her fingers against the desk, resisting the urge to audibly groan at the mention of an essay. Observing fish? Fine. Writing about fish? Less fine. Could she just do five words instead of 500? Magic imitates, but never perfects. Nice and sincinct, covered everything. Or 50 words?! 500 was too much time to spend on fish, professor.

And also—oh, that was a laugh. A Maddox one. Not a full one, but enough for her to notice. Interesting. What joke was she missing out on because nothing sounded all that funny and more like torture. Her gaze flicked briefly to the tank and then up front to the ones being offered by Professor Carton - hard pass, by the way. As Professor Carton dismissed the class, she stretched and hurried to pack her things so she could get as far away from fish and stones masquerading as them as fast as possible. Even for as fast as she worked, Maddox was already making his exit before she could throw another quip at him or suggest they go bask in the sun in the courtyard or literally anything. “Sure,” she said skeptically, slinging her bag over her shoulder. Casual exit. Very smooth. Definitely normal behavior, Maddox.

"Later, professor. If my essay is too good, I promise it isn't because I bribed or otherwise convinced my sister to write it for me...this time," she smiled with a firm nod. Really troublesome that he was her sister's head of house and that older Barrington being entirely too go-with-the-flow for her own good. She wouldn't obviously, deny her sister the opportunity to help again.

Calliope slung her bag over her shoulder and made a beeline for the door. Too many fish. Way too many fish. She needed air, grass, solid ground - anything that wasn’t swimming in circles. The brunette slipped out into the corridor, already plotting the driest possible route to the outdoors - Circe help everyone is Peeves dumped and Weasley Swamp water on her today.
