It's an unseasonably warm afternoon for early December. Outside the castle the sun is shining, and the weather isn't the only thing unusual about today. Upon entering the transfiguration classroom, it's apparent that the setup is completely different.
The usual rows of desks are gone, replaced with long tables. Several fish bowls sit along the tables, one for each student. Each bowl is filled with water and pebbles at the bottom; inside is a small fish. While the fish vary in shape and color, they are all approximately the same size. The fish swim around comfortably, with each bowl big enough to house 3-5 fish.
The only thing normal about the setup is Professor Carton standing in his usual place at the front of the classroom. ”Hello, welcome in!” he greets the students. ”Feel free to observe and interact with the fish, as long as you don't disturb them. Take your seats; we'll begin shortly.”
OOC: Welcome to Transfiguration! Please keep in mind that this is not the first IC lesson this term. Students would've had classes for about 3 months now. We'll start in ABOUT 24 HOURS. CLASS HAS STARTED!
Lesson Progression: Q1: What are your fish's traits? Which traits would be most important to consider in transfiguration? Why?
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Dynah would have liked nothing more than to have a moment to practice her Gobstone moves, especially since she was looking to be recruited by a pro team. However, Dad Adi had made it clear that she was to never put one of her passions above the other… nor over her academics. Gobstones practice would just have to wait; violin and dance practice as well.
For now, her focus would be on Transfiguration.
“Hi, professor!’’ the bubbly Hufflepuff chirped as she bounded into the classroom, much like her dad used to during his time at Hogwarts. “Changing things up I see! That’s nice!’’ Dy flashed a cheerful grin before flouncing off to one of the tables. “Hi, little buddy!’’ She may not have inherited either of her dads’ extreme passion for creatures, or even shared it with Ary, but she knew how to be kind to any that she came across. “You’re a pretty thing.” Yes, the little purple fish with the matching tail; it was a Siamese Fighting fish.

Diego walked in after his friend, Vi, even though it was months in the castle sometimes he still got lost and preferred to stick with someone who was more familiar with the route. "Hi, Professor." He smiled up at them.
Diego then saw the setup and all the fish. So they just had to be nice with them, he could do that. Setting his bag down at a nearby desk, he looked at the fish, it had a very vibrant color to it. He didn't tap the bowl, since apparently that stresses fish out, but he did run his fingers over the bowl. "Hi.. it's me, I'm Diego. How are you?" Smiling at the fish. Maybe the Professor will let them keep him? He could only wait until the lesson began.

Still riding the high of her unexpected Quidditch success at making starting chaser in spite of a horrific conclusion to tryouts, Calliope strut into the Transfiguration classroom and offered Professor Carton a genuine greeting, "Hiya professor." The Slytherin did not hate Transfiguration, per say, but she wasn't all that enthusiastic about lessons either - except for today, thanks to quidditch. Her eyes flick around the room, scanning the strange setup with a barely concealed sneer. The fishbowls lined up along the tables were ....hm...well...they were something. She didn’t even like fish when they were dead, breaded, and deep fried on a plate with tartar sauce, so the sight of them swimming around with their stupid little fins and scales was enough to make her roll her eyes. She didn't, but just barely, because she was in a good mood and wouldn't let some mundane fish ruin things for her.
She walked towards one of the empty seats, her gaze flicking over the fish in the bowl closest to her, curious but not particularly moved by its grace or flared gills. She'd rather be getting a head start on figuring out how to use a better school broom for her next real practice with the team or what she would say to Professor Adara and her head of house to convice them that she needed a proper broom and not some raggy old school broom or transfiguring herself a new set of sticks and maybe skipping class entirely to head to the music room, but again...nothing - repeat, nothing - was going to ruin her spirits! Calliope slide into her seat with a quiet but deliberate thud, her bag thumping onto the table beside her, and took another moment to observe the fish in the bowl in front of her - a pale, almost translucent pinkish-white body with a fiery red tail. She tapped a finger lightly on the glass, watching as the fish flicked its tail in response, gliding lazily through the water. It didn't do much, but it's enough to make her huff. Boring. She continued to tap her fingers in a rhythmic pattern against the cool surface, waiting for class to officially begin while her her thought slipped to the rush of her first Slytherin Quidditch practice - so much so that she could practically feel the wind swooshing against her cheeks. Take that Patented Daydream Charms!

Taliesin entered the Transfigurations Classroom with the intent to take his normal seat right in the middle of it all. The middle was always the most perfect spot to take a seat if you didn't want to gain too much attention to yourself. Class pets always sat up front so they were seen and the Class Clowns always sat in the back so they were just as easily seen despite their obvious thinking that the back would be the least looked upon spot in a class. Taliesin always took to the middle in all his classes always. He was strategic in his ability to just blend in.
It was to his surprise when he saw the different set up of long tables in the class, and the fish bowls each with a tiny fish inside of it. Hrmmm this could throw a wrench in his routine but Taliesin would not give in. "A-afternoon, Professor!" The young Hufflepuff chirped up with a bit of a squeak in his voice as he took to a Table in the center of the class and found his spot in front of one of the fish bowls there.
Taliesin leaned forward and looked into the fishbowl in front of him. Anyone who looked behind them would his own face magnified and distorted from glass bowl of water. He had a little light blue betta fish in front him. Were they gonna transfigure this little guys into something like a tiny thimble?
"Volo, Jaskier, Merrilin, Beedle." Taliesin was quietly listing off fictional bard after fictional under his breath while he tried to find the right name for his fish. "no.... Bombadil the Betta Bard." Perfect.
Maddox shuffled into the Transfiguration classroom. He was not nervous, not at all, about who he saw already sitting at one of the tables. “Professor,” he said with a small nod as he passed. Maddox was not one for many words. For most people, at least.
He was not nervous when he took a spot next to Calliope, and if he was nervous he wasn’t going to let it show. He was just going to act like everything was normal because it was. “Congrats,” he said with a small smile, but immediately followed up with, “You’re not supposed to tap a fishbowl, you know. Stresses them out. It could die and then you would have a fish ghost haunting you.”
Transfiguration was one of Lily's favorite subject and one she was rather good at, she was rather gifted in the subject. Walking into the classroom, she noticed the long tables with fishes instead of their normal desks which was something she was interested in to know about what they were learning. Seeing the different colors of the fishes she smiled softly looking at a blue one with what looked like yellow in it's tail. "Hello there little guy, aren't you a happy little fish?" Giggling happily she looked up at the professor and smiled. "Hello professor, I hope you're well, these fishes are all so pretty and vibrant!"
Looking around she noticed it was mainly first years, giving them all a soft warm smile she looked at Dynah and nodded at her as well. Maybe Soren or one of her friends would join her soon, for now she was okay making friends with the little firsties if they wanted to but she understands if they were shy and quiet.
Heading into the Transfiguration classroom JT immediatley took in the changed set up with long tables instead of the usual desks, and numerous fish bowls. Curious. "Good afternoon Professor Carton!" JT greeted with a big sunny smile, and a wave before walking over to find himself a seat. The snake third year boy chose an unclaimed seat at one of the tables, with a very green and silvery fish floating around in his bowl. It was easy to make the assumption that they were going to be transfiguring their fishes into something less fishlike when the lesson eventually got started. Picking out some parchment, and some quill and ink for note taking JT was set for the lesson to begin.

Norman’s eyes flicked toward the door as he awaited the students’ arrival. He hadn’t been waiting long when Atreyu-Rehman appeared. He returned the girl’s smile with a small one of his own. “Hello, Miss Atreyu-Rehman,” he replied. “Thank you. This setup allows more room for the fish.” And hopefully enough elbow room for the students that there wouldn’t be any bowls knocked over. There was always a reason behind the room layout.

Another smile followed as another student entered. “Good afternoon, Mr. Melo-Dreamer,” Norman greeted. His smile grew as he watched the boy’s interaction with the fish. The younger students were so sweet and innocent…most of the time.

Norman was under no illusion that Barrington’s enthusiastic mood had anything to do with transfiguration, but it was a welcome surprise whatever the reason. “Hello, Miss Barrington,” he replied, his eyes following her to her seat. The glass tapping got a slight eyebrow raise, but a student called it out before he had the chance to do so himself. Unless the behavior continued, he would let it slide this time.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Dane,” Norman greeted the next student to arrive. He watched, not at all surprised to see the boy take a seat in the middle of the room as usual, though the name he picked for the fish got a slight approving smile from the professor.

Moonstone seemed so absorbed in the fish on her desk, Norman half-expected she would forget to greet him. Fortunately that wasn’t the case. “Hello, Miss Moonstone,” he replied, smiling back. “I’m quite well, thank you. And yourself?”

Norman returned Forsfelle’s big smile with a smaller one of his own. While a positive attitude was not required in lessons, it was always nice to see. “Good afternoon, Mr. Forsfelle,” he replied.
Norman checked his watch. Almost one o’clock, almost time to start. He allowed a few more moments, peering out the door down the hall in search of stragglers. When he saw no one in the halls, he closed the door with a flick of his wand.
“Good afternoon, class,” he greeted the group. “Let’s get started!” He paused a moment to allow the students a moment to focus. As he did so, he crossed the room to his desk where there sat a fish bowl with a little red and blue fish swimming around inside. “If you haven’t already done so, take a moment to observe the fish on your table. How does it look? How does it behave? Which of your fish’s traits do you think would be most important to consider if you were to transfigure an object into a fish just like that one? Why?”
OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to jump in/catch up at any time. Just post as if your student has been here the whole time, unless you want IC consequences for late arrival. For question 1, Carton is asking for observations about the fish and/or which of those traits would be important to consider in transfiguration. Your student may answer any or all of the questions for credit. We’ll move on in 24-28 HOURS.

Yep, having the fishes comfortable was important. This was exactly the sort of thing her younger brother would agree on, she thought as she peered over at Ary with his gang of friends. Her attention diverted to a small student beside her who clearly also knew how to be kind to creatures. Or at least fishes. “Your fish friend is quite cute,’’ she whispered, giving Diego a smile. All of them were, now that she really took the time to study the bowls.
Carton’s had a wonderful combination that left the young violinist in awe. Perhaps someday she’d have an outfit with those colours for performances on stage. Her attention refocused on the little creature swimming before her. Oh yes, she had studied the little fish before her and had determined that he was quite a delight. Dy was also now thinking of getting one of these for the girlfriend as a present.
As for those questions, Dy raised her hand. “This one here seems quite content, professor, if I’m correct in assuming the slow steady pace at which its swimming correlates with contentment.” Dy squinted at the colourful fish as though asking it to confirm her words. “I think the physical traits would be most important, especially getting its gills right otherwise it wouldn’t survive.”

Calliope stilled, her fingertip hovering just above the glass of the tank - the fish almost looking relieved as it swished this way and that - just long enough to betray that she’d heard him. For a moment she didn’t move - didn’t even blink - just let Maddox's words hang in the air between them like the bad omen he’d clearly assigned himself to be. She straightened and turned her head to look at him. Then, with deliberate slowness, she tapped the glass again...once...twice...maintaining unwavering eye contact. "Oh nooooooooooo," she deadpanned. "A fish ghost. However will I survive?" She turned back to the tank, watching the fish dart away from her touch. "Did your precious cards give you that tip?" she mused. "I don’t remember them warning me about that some ruddy school broom would try to full on murder me at tryouts. Guess your little deck of doom and gloom missed the actual catastrophe."
Calliope leaned back slightly in her chair, arms crossing as she eyed the fish in front of her with vague disinterest. It was small, twitchy, and - assuming Maddox's theory held any weight - potentially on the verge of becoming an aquatic poltergeist. Cool, sure, whatever. At Professor Carton’s question, she let the silence stretch just long enough to imply she wasn’t going to answer. Then, with a small sigh, she uncrossed her arms and propped her elbow on the table as one of her peers spoke up and mentioned the death of transfigured fish - something she was half sure wasn't even a real thing because magic like this couldn't actually create life, only mimic it - she paid attention and actually read the text, sometimes. "Oh noooo, more phantom fins," she murmured under her breath, giving Maddox's knee a knock with her own.
Calliope’s eyes drifted back to the fish bowl, but her mind was elsewhere. Specifically, on the deck of tarot cards undoubtedly lurking somewhere in Maddox’s bag. A smirk played on her lips as an idea formed. Transfigure Maddox's tarot cards into wriggling, flopping around uselessly fish. She tapped the fishbowl again, this time more thoughtfully, as if considering the logistics of latest fantasy before. "Hey, Maddox," she whispered, voice low enough that the professor wouldn’t, hopefully, overhear. "Ever think about what your tarot cards would look like as fish? Because I have."

Nadia couldn’t help wondering just what role the fish in the bowl in front of her would be playing for class. Was it the aim of their future work? What they would be starting with? (Which always filled her with mixed feelings transfiguring living things to inanimate, even temporarily) Or would what they would be working on enhance the scene before each of them. Hearing Professor Carton speak again to start the lesson, Nadia straightened up to her full height having been carefully squatting to align her face to the bowl for a closer look since entering and taking a spot at one of the long tables. Not too close of course to scare the poor fella. It appeared the professor was interested in just what had been floating through her mind on their fishy companions.
She nodded in silent agreement to Dy’s answer on gills, agreeing with her twin as she thought on her own answers to the man’s questions. “The ability to float or have buoyancy in water seems important,” she remarked finally. “I don’t think you would try to transfigure a rock or something that would just fall heavily to the bottom of the bowl if it were dropping in into a fish.”
