It’s a mild sunny Friday afternoon outside, but one wouldn’t know it by walking into the transfiguration classroom. In fact, it doesn’t look like a classroom at all! Upon entering the classroom, students are faced with a snowy mountain landscape. There are no fires or heating charms in the room, only a cold wind that periodically blows through the room, disturbing the snow. The only sign of life is the ever-present vines that snake across the walls and floor, a stark contrast to the illusion. Hopefully you’ve remembered the professor’s instructions to dress warmly. It’s quite cold in here!
Professor Carton stands near the door, bundled up in a hooded snowsuit, gloves, and a scarf covering most of his face. Only his aquamarine eyes are visible over the top of the scarf. “Come in, and stand in a semi-circle,” he greets the arriving students. “Mind the vines! You have my permission to sever them if they get too close for comfort.” In fact, please do! Less work for him that way.
OOC: Welcome to our second OOC transfiguration this term! We’ll begin in 24-30 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED.
Lesson Progression Q1: What is your first priority for survival when stranded in the wilderness? Q2: How could transfiguration be helpful or unhelpful in obtaining shelter, water, fire, or food? Mini activity Main activity

Dia had, in fact, remembered to dress warmly today. She was wrapped in her purple skiing coat, gloves and boots, thank you very much. And upon entering the Transfiguration classroom, she could see the reasoning behind the instruction. Was that a mountain? Cool, cool. She didn’t think she would be lucky enough to be able to ski in this class, though. When were the professors ever that cool? She did like the scene, though. Minus the vines, of course, but it seemed like they were stuck with the stupid things, so…..
”Hello, Professor,” she greeted, moving to start the semi-circle in the middle of the room.

Valentina entered the classroom, her eyes widening in surprise as she took in the snowy landscape. Also?? It was so COLD!! She was dressed warmly but still - she couldn't help but shiver a bit. The blonde did wonder what they were going to be learning in such surroundings though.. Maybe some advanced heating charms??
... and she couldn't help but giggle when she looked at the professor. He looked so funny in that snowsuit!! "Hello, professor!" Val greeted finally.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daniel was glad that he had decided to look at the instructions on the noticeboard in the Hufflepuff common room before coming to class. As he opened the door a cold gust of air blew over him and he pushed his scarf closer up and over his nose. It did not matter how many times he had seen this type of magic that changed the scenery of the classroom but it was probably his favourite one of them all.
"Hello Professor" he greeted as he walked past Professor Carton and rubbed his arms to keep them warm. "A heating spell can do wonders you know..." just a ..hint... Yes, he was cold!
He entered the 'classroom' further and walked to his classmates that were already present to form the semi-circle.
Dressing warmly was something he did not need to be told twice on. Evan wasn't very fond of being cold, so he'd made sure to bundle quite well. An extra Ravenclaw sweatshirt he'd had made over his shirt and underneath his robes, and his scarf wrapped up over his mouth. He had a couple extra scarves in his bag as well, just in case one or both of his sister's had not been prepared. He'd prefer to not give up his own scarf for this class, especially when he noticed just how cold it was when they entered the classroom.
"Hello, Professor Carton." He would have offered the man a smile with his greeting, but considering it couldn't be seen under the scarf it didn't seem necessary. If he could even understand what he had said too, that was.
Hearing the permission too to sever any of the vines if needed - which honestly it wasn't to get to a spot in the circle, he pulled his wand out anyways and pointed it at one of the vines close-ish by. "Diffindo!" Not that cutting one seemed to do any changes.
Evan made his way to a spot beside Daniel, giving the younger Hufflepuff a nod in hello.

Dress warmly? Noah thought it was a bit vague, considering that the cold, especially in the highlands, had different levels. Considering the current season they were in, the Gryffindor decided to dress warmly as instructed, but not as layered as one would expect, say during winter.
While it may be weird for some to dress in layers while it was nice and sunny outside, Noah was his usual confident self as he strutted down the corridors in his winter clothes like a true catwalk model. You see, in the business, a model should always be ready for whatever clothing thrown their way. Confidence was key.
The Gryffindor stepped back as he opened the door to Transfiguration and was caught off guard by the cold wind that welcomed him. "I should've gone for the full winter gear..." he murmured, as he bravely entered the very cold...but vine-y classroom. "A very cold afternoon to you, Professor." he said with a smile, as he non-verbally cast heating charms on his clothes to keep him warm and toasty. Wouldn't want to be sick before his date that afternoon...

Darius always felt awkward in cool attire, from his growing height over the years he had to re-adjust to new sizes of clothing to feel cozy in this time of the year. He was bundled up from the dragon boots, baggy pants, sweater and blanket draped over his shoulders like a cape, with his face partially covered by a balaclava.
"Hello, Professor." Darius spoke a little louder so he could be heard through the mouth covering. He was glad to not only be looking out of the ordinary in the attire. Afterward, he went over where the older students resided before waiting.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
One would have thought that Carton might have been thrilled about the end of winter but clearly the setting of the classroom told a different story. Claudine was all bundled up, of course, having followed the instructions. She was slightly annoyed because of the vines. Despite them being around the castle for a while now, she hadn’t gotten used to them.
The seventh year was not far off behind Daniel so she heard his words to Carton. “Well, why don’t you cast one on yourself then?’’ she questioned irritably. “Hi, Professor.” Daniel was constantly keen on practicing spells, surely he hadn’t missed an opportunity to master such an essential one? Still, she followed him to stand on his other side.
By now Violet was used to having classes all over the school grounds, unnecessary as she often thought it was, so she had heeded the advice to 'dress warmly' and worn the heavy Norwegian sweater Miss Howard had given her for a belated birthday present, as well as a hat, scarf, and gloves. But she was astounded to find that the outside had been brought inside in this case, which seemed overkill to her.
"Good afternoon, Professor Carton," she murmured a trifle grumpily as she took her place in the semi-circle of students, eying the vines on the floor from time to time. She would not hesitate a second in severing any of them that crossed her.
“Hey professor.” For once, Ash had dressed warmly. She had long sleeves, and a jacket. Even a hat. And she had gloves and a scarf in her pocket. She had actually decided to be responsible today... after all she didn’t intend to freeze.
She stood next to Noah and stuck her hands in her pockets. “I find it kinda funny that the only time I bothered to dress warmly was to stand inside of a classroom.” In the actual outdoors, she never dressed warmly enough. And that was a little dumb.
She pulled on her gloves. Then she tried and failed to put on her scarf... maybe she should have put it on before her gloves? But she didn’t wanna take her gloves off... hmm. This appeared to be a problem.
Typical Ash. She could blow things up and create beautiful art and do cool surfing tricks... but putting on a scarf with gloved hands? Nah. That was too hard.

Misa was not a fan of the cold. She held her coat tighter around herself vaguely wondering if they were allowed to charm them to make the environment tolerable or was this a Transfiguration-only zone?
"Hello Professor." she greeted with her best attempt not to have chattering teeth.
She wrinkled her nose slightly as she stepped over a vine before picking a spot in the semi-circle.
Sever the vines? She'd like to light them on fire. Snow was only to be enjoyed while skiing or from the safety of the inside by a fire with a cup of hot chocolate. Neither of those scenarios were happening.

Norman kept his eyes on the door, watching for arriving students. He hadn’t been waiting long when Wolff appeared. “Hello, Miss Wolff,” he replied.

Well, this one was cheerful! Norman immediately noticed Nichols’s giggle, though it didn’t occur to him that she was giggling at him. “Hello, Miss Nichols,” he greeted.

Yoon’s words got a slight smile from the professor, a smile hidden by the scarf wrapped around his face. “Hello, Mr. Yoon,” Norman replied. “Suggestion noted.” There was a reason for the lack of heating charms, which the boy and everyone else would learn in due time.

Yes, Norman could understand Nam’s words despite the scarf. It wasn’t that difficult; he had developed rather keen listening skills over the years. “Hello, Mr. Nam,” he replied.

Norman saw nothing awkward about Potter’s attire. Then again he prioritized safety and comfort above aesthetic, so he was the wrong person to ask about fashion! “Hello, Mr. Potter,” he greeted, nodding politely.

Norman glanced at his watch to see that it was four o’clock on the dot. He drew his wand, aiming at the door, and it closed and locked with a click. Turning away from the door, he made his way farther into the classroom to stand in the middle of the semi-circle. “Good afternoon, class! Let’s get started,” he addressed the group, talking somewhat louder than normal to account for the scarf wrapped around his face and the gusting wind.
He paused only a second before launching into the first question. He didn’t want his students to be cold for any longer than was absolutely necessary! “Here’s a hypothetical scenario for you: Imagine you’re stranded in the wilderness with nothing but your wand and the clothes on your back. What is your first priority in terms of survival?”
OOC: So sorry for the delay… sickness & laptop issues put me behind schedule! Class has officially started. Feel free to join in at any time; just pretend that your character has been here the whole time unless you want IC consequences for a late arrival. We’ll move on in ABOUT 18 HOURS.

... He really hoped Professor Carton was not stranding them in this now cold classroom for a ton of time. Though he doubted it, but he supposed they would probably be learning spells that would be helpful should that scenario ever arise. Though, truthfully anything that would be necessary in the wilderness could probably be useful in every day as well.
But what was the first thing that he'd do if stranded? Well... perhaps it was the cold climate talking, but the first thing that came to Evan's mind was building a shelter to get out of whatever the weather conditions were. His hand went up. "Shelter is top of my priority list. If there are sticks or branches or anything around, Epoximise could be used in place of rope in order to get it all to stay together for a more durable shelter."

After sharing a good laugh with a classmate while waiting for the others to arrive, Noah turned to the familiar voice, lifting a brow ever so slightly at her remark, and eyed the way she battled with her scarf. "Well, I'm not even surprised." Noah shook his head and grinned at his pseudo little sister, "Scarf first, then the gloves." he added as he went on to help Ash get ready for class, tying the thick material around her neck snugly. "You're welcome."

After patting Ash's head once, Noah shifted his attention to Professor Carton up front, signalling the start of class. Survival? Food was the first thing that came to mind, but given that he cannot conjure food out of thin air, he'd have to settle for the next best thing: "Shelter, professor. Especially if we have this kind of condition. We'd freeze to death if we don't have that extra layer of warmth." it pays to be an outdoor person, really.

Ash blushed(this was so embarrassing), but it was hard to tell because of the cold was making her face(still not covered by the scarf) red anyway. In her defense!!! She lived in Australia!!! And she had almost never bothered to wear a scarf at Hogwarts before because she liked to feel cold and being cold meant you weren't dead! If anyone was wondering about her inability to put her scarf on right.
Ash let Noah tie her scarf on for her, not complaining despite her strong feeling that she looked like a toddler right now. "Thank you..." She probably looked adorable right now. Oh no. They were never to discuss this again!!!
Ash didn't like to ask for help. But she greatly enjoyed receiving it and it felt weird because her family had taught her that she needed to do everything herself and anything other than that was weakness and and and... yeah.
Anyway.
This was a really nice scarf. It was ravenclaw blue, and it was warm but it wasn't fuzzy because she hated getting weird fuzzy scarf material in her mouth. Whoever had picked this out for her(Dustin) clearly knew her very well.
"If you are injured, either it's quickly healable/manageable or you're probably dying, so that shouldn't take too much time to solve. Beyond that, I agree with everyone else. Shelter is definitely the most important. You want to find a safe spot, preferably near water, and not too far away because you need to conserve energy. You can use your wand to easily build the shelter, or you could do it the muggle way if you're not good at magic... also I'd start a fire to keep warm and think about my next steps."
Ahs really didn't understand why people liked camping or hiking. It was all fun and games until you were cold and wet and having an emergency...
"Shelter will hopefully keep you from getting cold and wet and lost, and therefore dying quickly and uncomfortably." And it was somewhere to go back to, a base or whatever... and that was comforting.

The only thing Carton was missing was that Daniel could sometimes be too sassy which came across as rude. Claudine had been on the receiving end of this and the vines along with the Hufflepuff’s whining had irritated her. However, as she stood beside him, she said nothing further. All she focused on was trying to figure out what today’s lesson would be about.
Not that the wait would last much longer.
Claudine pondered on the question. Shelter had been her first thought but that answer had already been given quite a bit. “One of the first things I would do is to build a fire. It would keep me warm if necessary and also keep creatures away. Hopefully.”
Violet nodded as she heard the others' answers. "I agree. Healing first, if needed. Then shelter. And after that, I'd think would be water." She thought a minute and then added, "As for a fire, that would depend on the type of wilderness you were stuck in--if it wasn't cold weather, fire wouldn't be as high a priority."
What would she do if she were stranded in the wilderness?? Uhh. She only hoped that situation would never arise. Val wasn't very outdoorsy but she could only imagine how scary that situation would be. Another reason why she was never going to go camping. Everrr.
"Well.. what about food, professor? Isn't that a priority??" She thought so, at least.

Everyone had good answers, Darius thought. Food, Shelter, and the alike. Since being stranded without much sign of escape. He would wonder what the weather conditions are if it was extremely hot, cold, rainy, windy... and other situations occuring.
"Probably to make sure I truly am alone and see if there's any dangerous creatures or areas nearby before making a safe spot." He answered. The last thing he needed was to be taken by surprise while making shelter or gathering food. "Then also make some sort of landmark to alert others of my condition if passing by."

The last thing he needed was to be taken by surprise while making shelter or gathering food. "Then also make some sort of landmark to alert others of my condition if passing by."
Here was another answer Norman hadn’t expected to hear. “Sound thinking, Mr. Potter,” he said, nodding. “In addition to alerting others, a landmark can be used to help you find your way back to your shelter after searching for food and water.”
Norman’s aquamarine eyes scanned the room in search of more hands in the air. When he saw none, he addressed the class again, “Good answers, everyone! All of the things you mentioned are important priorities to consider when lost in the wilderness. When determining which is most important, you should consider the weather conditions and the type of terrain, but a general rule of thumb is shelter first, Then water, then fire, then food. Also, as Mr. Potter touched on, you must always be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for potential dangers, creature or otherwise, and make marks along your path to help others find you and to help yourself find your way.” Did they get all that?
Just in case, he brandished his wand, and, holding it like a pencil, he made a motion as if writing. The following list appeared in fiery red letters midair:

*Consider terrain and weather conditions when evaluating survival priorities. Always be aware of your surroundings!*
After allowing a brief moment or two for the students to copy that down, Norman moved on. “Building off the last question,” he said, “how could transfiguration help you obtain the things on that list? Is there anything for which you think transfiguration wouldn’t be helpful?”
OOC: Question 2 is up! For this one, Carton is asking how transfiguration might be helpful or unhelpful in acquiring shelter, water, fire, and/or food in the wilderness. You don’t have to give an example for each item on the list; one example per student will do. You have ABOUT 18 HOURS for this question.

Surely, Transfiguration or any magic for that matter, was very handy to any and almost all situations that are inconvenient and or perilous. Wizarding folks can claim legitimate bewilderment as to how muggle folks do survival in the harshest condition without magic to help them, because magic was convenient.
So, was it possible for magic to be unhelpful? Aside from being less equipped academically, there's a natural law that limits the use of magic. "Transfiguration is a very useful and important branch of magic, but not everything can be conjured out of thin air, Professor." Noah said, raising his hand again, and then pointing at the list he made. "While food is needed for survival, magic cannot be used to conjure sustenance out of thin air. It has to be sourced some place else, according to Gamp's Law. Now, this could be a problem, especially if we are stuck in a hostile environment like this one." Noah has had a lot of experience using the Room of Requirement over the years, and he'd learned that he was required to bring his own food inside if he wanted to use it for a longer period of time. Well, at least, water can be conjured, so they really aren't that doomed.

Yes, Claudine got all of that.
It was interesting just how many aspects were necessary for one’s survival in the wilderness. She wondered which of them would be the focus of today’s lesson. She made her notes then looked towards Carton once more as he moved things along.
Noah was right about one component of Gamp’s law, of course. The Snakette’s eyes remained on the fiery words, trying to figure out something useful. She was still thinking of fire, yes. And suddenly she had an answer. Up went a hand. “Focalia conjures firewood,’’ Claudine volunteered when she was called upon. “That’s one way Transfiguration can help out. After you have the firewood, a fire can be lit.” Hopefully easily so.
Valentina quickly noted down what the professor said. Getting lost in the wilderness definitely sounded very stressful. Hmm. She took a few moments to think as she stared at the snowy landscape absently, raising her hand finally to answer.
"Professor, aguamenti can be used to conjure water." Because drinking water is a necessity, yes??

CAMPING!
This was like camping but Nam family camping meets the Survival TV show. Sounded EPIC. She was imaging all the possibilities which is why she stayed silent and then she suddenly distracted by her open textbook when she got a certain word. Hmm…. She began skimming through the textbook as quickly as she could before pausing. The Professor’s words and red words caught her attention and she refocused on the task at hand.
Water, shelter, fire/warmth, and food….
Noah had a very logical point. Claudine ‘s point was new causing her to write down the incantation. She’d have to ask HER BROTHER Noah to help her with that. He was of age. Wait… Now that he was at Uni would he be going to the family camping trips??? if not, she’d ask Noah Mordaunt to go. She had to have a Noah for a Noah. Valentina was super pretty y’know? And Augmenti made sense…. She wondered how the thing with Evan went… She had heard rumors but hadn’t seen or heard anything confirming something….
“OH OH! PROFESSAAAUR!” Excited wiggly wave of her hand. “BEING AN ANIMAGUS WOULD BE SOOOOOO HELPFUL! I’d recommend being a wolf then you can hunt for food and explore and stay warm!”

"I think transfiguration would work best with the shelter." Misa said. Because everyone seemed to be stuck on the food thing she figured she'd say something different.
As for the other things, she'd use charms. Except the food thing. That was a whole other issue.
