| | 'Northanger Abbey' by Jane Austen (Sa13+) [SPOILERS] Welcome to The Book Seekers' Book of the Month for April 2020! If you don't know what Book of the Month is, there's more information here but, in a nutshell, it is a monthly event during which we all read the same book and discuss it here. This discussion will be active until May 15th. Additionally, Lord of the Flies's discussion thread will also remain active until April 15th.
This month we're reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen! Age Rating | Sa13+ Genre | Classics Summary from Goodreads | Jane Austen's first novel—published posthumously in 1818—tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen's fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical novel pokes fun at the gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex. Let's go over some ground rules... - All Book Club Rules and SnitchSeeker Board Rules apply in this forum.
- You can discuss ANYTHING that is related to Northanger Abbey in here. However, it must be kept SPOILER FREE until at least April 15th. You can include spoiler-y content as long as it is under a spoiler tag. Remember that other people might not be as far along in the book as you.
- Any posts that contain spoilers (that aren't under spoiler tags) will be edited by a Book Club mod.
- This discussion will be active until May 15th. That being said, the thread will remain open for everyone to discuss the book after that time, too.
There's more? There is! While we're reading and discussing Northanger Abbey, there are other related things that you can get involved with. - Feeling inspired? Contribute some Northanger Abbey fanart to our Bookish Fan Art thread.

Alright, so! I actually enjoyed reading this. This was my first Jane Austen novel I know, blasphemy for an English teacher. I've tried reading Austen before, but maybe Persuasion wasn't the text to start with.
Things I liked about this book: - the satirical tone came through
- Henry Tilney is delightful
- the John Thorpe type is very much still around
- *more to come once spoilers are allowed*

This book is absolutely hilarious if you keep in mind just WHEN it was written and what other books are from the same time and it's just so funny.
I hope you all enjoy it too! *twirls around*

I'm VERY happy to see so much excitement surrounding reading/discussing this book!
I've only read a couple of chapters so far but I can already tell that I'm going to enjoy it. Northanger Abbey will be the second Jane Austen book I'll have read - after Pride and Prejudice, which I loved! - and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. |

I've read a grand total of one chapter so far - but I need to come and say that the very first sentence made me giggle.

Just downloaded the ebook from my library after putting it on a hold! Excited to get started this weekend.
Interestingly, although I've never read it I have read the reimagined version that Val McDermid wrote. So I'm very excited to read the classic!

How's everyone getting along? Who has finished and who's still reading? We can wait a little longer to start the discussion if needed. I'll admit that I haven't finished yet.
In the meantime, you could always check out the other discussions in our forum, such as the one Tori posted on book adaptations, or you could post one of your own. |

I'm still working my way through, I'm only getting a few chapters read at a time as I don't seem to have a great attention span at the moment. Question for everyone; Although Northanger Abbey was Jane Austen's last book published, it was the first one that she wrote. Do you think that shows in her writing or have you enjoyed any book of hers that you have read, regardless?

Just finished last night. I will admit - that is now two BotM books in a row I have not been a fan of. I am just not a classic literature gal. I think it's because I have to go slow in order to comprehend the older writing style, but unfortunately my attention didn't hold very long and it took me FOREVERRRRRR.
I will say though, I didn't have any idea where the plot was going so everything was a surprise when it happened!

I completely get this! I am really enjoying it, but I'm finding that reading it out loud (or as if I was reading it in my head) helps me with the flow and understanding it better... but I do find that I'm only getting 2-3 chapters read at a time.
I will make it there! It's good to push boundaries and read something new though, and I'm soo excited for that with this book as it 100% isn't something I would usually think to read.

Oh wait. I took a screenshot earlier to prove I was reading it and learning things...
Hold on... Word: importunate Meaning: adj. persistent, especially to the point of annoyance or intrusion
LMAO. I was giggling so badly cause I thought they had screwed up like important and unfortunate "was very importunate with Isabella to stand up"
is the part of that quote though not the full sentence cause I can't see it all in my screenshot.
