Theme # 01: Herbology

The boy's lids were heavy with sleep, though it was only seven in the evening, and he rubbed groggy eyes, as he stepped through the doors, into the library.

Madame Pince shot him a not-too-happy look, as he pulled up a chair, and slumped down into it. He had little time to care for that, though - his herbology homework, that was due tomorrow. He knew he was too worn-out from three hours of quidditch to finish it this hour, even this night, but he had to give this a shot.

It was either that, or detention.

Theme # 26: Quill

"Hi, Parvati."

Parvati looked up. 'Twas Harry Potter. She waved to him, he sat down at a table, and she returned to her paperwork.

Gosh, how to complete this assignment?

What was the use of hellebore in the Potion of God-Knows-What, anyway? No idea. NO idea. With a sigh, she continued to chew on the edge of her quill, but nothing came to mind.

"Need some help?"

She looked up. It was the Chosen One, again. "No. Thanks for the offer though, Harry."

He nodded. Left.

Theme # 27: Owl

It was a sad, sad day when a redhead was told he would not get a new broom, until he brushed up his grades.

At twelve, Arthur Weasley was quite a bright child. He would have, in fact, made an excellent engineer, had he been allowed to pursue that programme of study. Fate had other things in store for him, though.

Such as the news that he would get no new broomstick, until he paid attention to his runes.

With a frown and a heavy heart, the second year walked into the library, and found himself a seat.

How uninteresting.

Theme # 28: Timeturner

It was a wonder that the new Headmistress, was Headmistress. She was young, barely twenty-three, and her hair bore a streak of purple.

"The Ministry has gone crazy," an old professor said sourly, at breakfast. He was rather bitter that he had been overlooked, for the position.

"I think she's actually nice," a small, though plump, teacher piped up. She was reading a book titled The Invention of the Time-Turner, and her eyes were rather kindly. "She told me she plans to introduce a children's section, in the library."

The old professor choked on his juice.

Theme # 29: Pensieve

"Meowwnn."

The house-elf stopped in his tracks, eyes wide. It was dark in the library, quite dark for it was well past curfew, and the sudden noise was rather unexpected.

"Kitty?" the house-elf asked. In the sort of voice that told he half-expected a voice to reply with a "Yes, Dandy-Legs?" Which was, incidentally, this house-elf's name.

"MEEAAOOWNNN."

The house-elf jumped, held up his lantern, its silver rays like the shiny contents of a Pensieve. The light washed over the tables, over chairs and over -- a cat. A rather fat, orange cat.

Theme # 30: Feast

Madame Pince had been about to place a book on some sort of Laws, back into its shelf, when she spied them.

She knew, at once, that they were here for no good reason, because they held hands across their desk, and the book that lay on it, seemed like a pathetic excuse, at first sight. Her eyes narrowed - and then she nearly yelped out loud, for the girl let go of the boy's hand to take out a chocolate frog!

"FEASTING IN THE LIBRARY!" she yelled, waving the Law book over her head. "HOW DARE -"

The couple ran.

Theme # 31: Dress robes

"I hate you."

His eyes flickered. He was more of a cold person in general, than most people could be even at their best try, but he hardly felt that way, now.

"Listen to me -" he began.

She shook her head, turned on her heel, and left. He saw her go, red hair pinned at the back of her head, her silver dress-robes pretty in the moonlight, and then he turned away.

Ginny Weasley stepped into the empty library, placed her head on a table, and closed her eyes.

She was never going to forgive Draco Malfoy.

Not ever.

Theme # 32: Common room

UGHH!

It was clear that Lunert could not study. She had thought the worst was over, when she had sat her OWL's but, apparently, sixth year was even worse.

-- and the noise in the common room refused her any peace of mind, or the least opportunity to study for that darned Arithmancy exam, that was tomorrow.

"Hey, Lunert!" a voice called out. "Chill, kid, come play a game of exploding snap cards with us!"

She let out a groan of frustration, shook her head no, and stood up. Time to grab her books and head for the library, yes.

Theme # 33: Classroom

The Gobstone club wanted a classroom, for their sport. The new Headmistress was rather strict, though. She really was not sure if she wanted to allow this new game, to take root in the castle.

It could detract students from their course-work, and that would not be right. She wanted, after all, to be remembered as the one teacher who had brought out all of her students' hidden potential at study. Best grades and all.

"But," a seventh year insisted, at the students-Headmistress meeting in the library. "Not everyone's book-smart and -"

The woman refused to listen.

Theme # 34: Parseltongue

There are some people you would rather not know, but can appreciate. If the library could speak, it would probably have said this of him.

He was good-looking, the sort of guy who can attract - no, not girls - trouble. Ah yes, Tom Riddle had a natural affinity for mischief. The thing liked it as much as he liked it -- Love, reciprocated.

The Parseltongue stepped into the library now, and the old librarian with glasses nodded to him. Tom nodded back, the way someone who probably had a lot of homework up his sleeve, would.

A lot of mischief?

Maybe.

Theme # 35: Pureblood

Eh.

Where was that BOOK?

She scrunched up her nose, peered more closely at the shelf, and picked up a book at random.

A Study of Pureblood-Supremacy and Wizarding Elitism.

What?

What did this mean?

It was certainly not what she wanted. She scrunched up her nose again, stood on tiptoe to replace the bad book -- and lost her balance.

"Miss?"

Sprawled on the ground, she looked up to see the upside-down face of the old librarian.

"Yes?" she asked, cheerfully.

"What are you doing on the floor?"

"Looking for Goldilocks and the Three Bears."

The librarian blinked.

Theme # 36: Muggle

The neat-freak growled as he stepped into the library now, and saw that someone had thrown a wrapper by his favourite desk.

"Can't keep the environment clean ... as bad as muggles are to the ozone ..." He muttered as he picked up the wrapper, and stuffed it into his pocket, in anger.

"I still think we should have emptied a whole dustbin there," Lee Jordan observed, from a distance. "Though even that won't compensate for that one time he threw my favourite underwear out of the window, because he reckoned it wasn't clean."

Fred grinned.

George snickered.

Theme # 37: Animagus

It was raining, and thunder broke through the patter of droplets, loud in its roar, and dazzling in its blinding flash of light.

"Rotten luck," the woman with the jewelled glasses muttered darkly. "Nobody predicted a storm." It was nowhere near a storm, to be honest, but what did she care? Her plan to squeeze out a juicy story out of this night had failed. Miserably.

She muttered again, and then she was gone, in the scuttle of tiny steps over wet grass. The little bug that she was, now, sneaked into the library, and waited the bad weather out.

Theme # 38: Patronus

He thought.

Of her red hair, like flames or like soft velvet. Of her green eyes, full of sparkle, of beauty, for as long as he had known them. Of her full, red lips, quick to laugh, never quick to frown.

Of those hours, those precious little moments they had been able to share with each other. Of that last day he had spent with her under the thatched roof of her cottage. Of that first day he had spent with her, in the library.

"Expecto Patronum."

The patronus erupted from his wand like red-hot flames -- fiery -- breathtaking.

Exhausting.

Theme # 39: Duel

She ducked under a chair, narrowly avoiding the jet of red light that was thwacked at her. "Stoopppp ittt!" she yelped out, as another jet of light missed her, and hit a bookshelf, instead.

"HOW COULD YOU!" Her attacker yelled all angrily. "This is a duel to the DEATH!"

"I swear I won't throw your makeup kit out of the window again!" the girl under the chair tried to convince her sister. She had run into the library for refuge, but it looked her twin did not believe even this to be too sacred a place, for anger.

Eep!

Theme # 40: Spell

It was a quiet night.

There were stars in the sky, little points of light that shone far out of the reach of man, woman or child. They twinkled, indeed, far above the world; and the dark was silent, not fearful as it sometimes could be.

The world looked as though it were under a spell, an enchantment too beautiful, too breathtaking to be even thought of being broken.

Inside the library, all lay silent. There was a little dust in the shelves, and it curled in smoky, little things and scented the place like no other perfume could.

Theme # 41: Thestrals

UGH!

She hated how disorderly this little back room, was. It was not really a part of the library. More of a chamber where a lot of books were stacked. Books that no one read. Only as a general rule, of course. Because the fact that she was here, proved the value of these books.

Or at least the need.

She brushed dust off one, and peered at its title; because something about how darkish the cover was, attracted her. Thestrals in Symbolism. Umm, no. This was certainly not what she needed.

Placing it aside, she returned to her search.

Theme # 42: Portraits

Construction.

There was sand in the air. Someone levitated a big bag of cement, and it tipped to a side, under the expert action of a wand. Cement poured out, smack into a big dish of water.

"That smells bad," someone said, scrunching up their nose in a rather unhappy way.

"Nice joke," someone else shot back. "It's the best scent ever." Because it was. For quite a lot of workers there, trust me.

"Place too bare," someone else said, poking a library wall. "Needs some portraits. Something bright."

"All of you get back to work!"

Time to scurry.

Theme # 43: Headmaster

She had never been in the Headmaster's office, before; and now that she was, the bright eyes behind the smallish glasses took in everything with great delight. She loved how the wall curved upwards, at one point -- how there was a rather magnificent phoenix, by that window -- how there was a little stack of books, on the desk.

The last, of course, reminded her of the library; a favourite hang-out, the one place that she could share her peace with, in total silence.

Then the phoenix burst into flames, and she blinked.

"Must you do that now, birdie?"

Theme # 44: Ford Anglia

It was that time of the year again. Madame Pince set down to work, sorting out books, newspapers and more. She was in a rotten mood by the end of the hour, and had decided she was going to take the rest of the day off, when she caught sight of an old newspaper.

Muggle claims to have seen flying Ford Anglia.

She remembered that. Madame Pince growled a bit, then picked up the newspaper, and rolled it up. Children at Hogwarts would NOT get to see this newspaper, not under her reign.

It would give them ideas, it would.

Theme # 45: Torch

It was well past curfew, and the library was closed. Which was exactly why it was quite a surprise for it, when there was a little noise at the far end. By the locked doors, in fact.

It was only the wind, it turned out. It had picked up, in the past hour or half, and it grew a little wilder, now, with each passing second -- knocking at windows and shut doors, and whistling down chimneys.

The library, for its part, remained silent. A single torch burned in a bracket on the wall, and shadows danced the rainy night away.

Theme # 46: Dungeon

He had that right to mutter darkly under his breath, as he stepped out of the dungeons. What an unfair detention! Perhaps it had been his fault, too. He should have spoken up, let the potions master know it had not been him. But then, when had the potions master ever listened to him?

He pushed his square-framed spectacles up the bridge of his nose, rubbed his hands together to warm them up, and quietly stepped into the library.

- The one place he could find peace in, when it seemed to have evaporated off the rest of the earth.

Theme # 47: Portkey

There are some places that breathe in quirky secrets, and the library could be counted as one of these. Even if you were one of the people who cherished it -- held it dear, close to your heart like a good bar of chocolate, or an antique of worth -- there were some you would not know. Surprising, little ones that you would never, in fact, be able to guess.

You would not know, for instance, that the old vase in the far corner of the restricted section, was a portkey. One that transported you to the corridor outside the library, itself.

Theme # 48: Leprechaun

What was this?

The little bird that had managed to sneak into the library, eyed the bag on the table. She was hungry, exhausted because she had not been able to head back home courtesy a very angry shower of rain, and she poked the bag with her tiny beak now, in the hope that it was food.

But it was not. Only full of Leprechaun gold that some student had left behind in his hurry. The birdie, of course, did not know this. She only poked the bag again, then flew away, to settle on top of a bookshelf.

Theme # 49: Yule Ball

"Alicia, listen -"

He tried to grab her arm, but she tore away from him, sped off. Her high heels clicked against the ground, though he could not see them, and then she was gone, had turned a corner and disappeared into the corridor that led to the library, the place she would probably look for refuge in.

But Marcus Flint did not think of this. He only thought of the fury in her eyes, of the bitterness in her tones, and of how he should not have come to the Yule Ball with that blonde Ravenclaw, in the first place.

Theme # 50: Boggart

What was that?!

On her way to place a big book of stories back into its shelf, Madame Pince paused rather dramatically. The cabinet to her right was - there was no other for it - shaking.

"Uh uh..."

She knew the signs, because she had dealt with this problem, before. It was a boggart, perhaps the same that had taken to the empty cupboard, in the restricted section. She frowned at the thought, then took out her wand, pointed it very threateningly at the piece of furniture, and --

-- and turned away.

"Don't worry, cabinet. I'll get Dumbledore, right away!"
