They were just friends…right?

The kiss meant nothing. A quick way to quiet her while she rabbled...or so he had thought.

Then why did he suddenly feel like Kyle wasn’t fully human? Like her presence was now an anchor to his own and he felt weird and out of control of himself when around her.

“And that trip at the beauty store grand opening was just a misstep, right Bennett?” Simon spoke to himself with a shake of the head. “Nothing at all odd about that.”

He had to be under some sort of spell. That was the only explanation.

16. Dragonhide Gloves

Skulls and crossbones marked down on anything tended not to be a nice thing to deal with and when they were on bottles and jars it was only made worse.

What WOULD they be dealing with this class?

Simon followed the preparations left them by Professor Kazimeriz to the t, not wanting anything to go wrong because he didn’t. However it wasn’t himself that he had to worry about.

Near-frozen cauldron…check.
Survival despite dangerous exploding cauldron of another student…check

They hadn’t even began their work on whatever tricky potion they were to be handling today.

Thank goodness for safety precautions.

It wasn’t often he spent a significant amount of time in this part of the department. Yet here he was helping out in the IUMO office getting some on-the-job training on the various tasks there.

“Name?”

“Gillian McNamara,” the woman sitting across from him answered.

“And what is the form you take?”

“Grizzly…should I show you?”

Simon shook his head as he wrote it down. “Nope I just do the paperwork.” Even if he had that authority, he doubted he’d want to see her change anyway. Not exactly a fan of seeing a large bear suddenly materializing in the office.

87. Staircase

“Great…just great. I knew I shouldn’t have gone back for that book.”

Simon had thought he had finally gotten used to things and had managed to make it to his classes on time. Today wasn’t going to behave though, especially when he felt himself falling as he rushed downstairs

The trick step.

The young Gryffindor groaned and quickly looked around for anyone to help him. Seeing no one however he began to panic.

“HELP!”

“You really should watch where you’re going,” a familiar voice sounded behind him and he turned as best he could to spot his brother.

77. Cheerful
--6th Year--

Woot! They had done it!

Gryffindor had succeeded in winning the house cup for the latest term.

“Roar…Roar…Gryffindor!!” the excited members of the house kept chanting as they celebrated the well-deserved victory, the banners of the Great Hall showing Lion Pride all around.

But there Jacob was…his arch-rival captain bragging to him and Patroclus about his own house’s victory in the sport they all played.

“So what?” Simon remarked remaining upbeat. “I might be the Gryffindor quidditch captain and we might have lost our games but I’m proud of my house for what they DID accomplish. You can’t change that.”

35. Pureblood

There were muggles and muggleborns in his family.

Did it matter to them? No. Did it matter to others? Sometimes.

But deep down the appearance of magic within the Bennett family line was a blessing and those who were blessed with it used it with the best of intentions. And the latest members were no different in doing their part in the family history. Matthias, Jonathan and Simon being both loyal and brave and everything in between.

A magizoologist…and two aurors. People entrusted with the lives of both wizards and their familiars.

While he didn’t play the sport anymore, it didn’t mean Simon didn’t take time out to watch a game or two. And with a former teammate making it professionally, he wasn’t about to miss a chance to see her in action.

As he took his seat in the stands, the YATI tried to remember what team playing was the one who lucked out in snagging Selina.. However as the competitors of today’s game took to the air it became very clear.

“Gotta be the Harpies.” As the Kenmare’s team uniforms would make her resemblance to the team’s mascot quite amusing.

“You mean…this hat?” The captain’s hat resting on his fingers as he revealed it to his companion.

“Bennett, hand it over. Vindictus told me to retrieve it for him.”

“You?...ye’re a landlubber.” Simon pulled it back as the Ravenclaw grabbed for it, the older boy looking incredulous that Jacob would suggest such a thing. “How about…I’LL return it to him for you.”

Jacob sighed growing impatient, tackling the Gryffindor and sending them both over the railing into the ice cold water.

“YE SCALYWAG!

“Now you’ll have to catch me if you want it,” Simon taunted, taking off towards the pitch.

66. Pace
--7th Year--

With the tryouts complete now came the hard part for captains: The actual picking out of his team. It didn’t get easier each year as one might have hoped, actually becoming harder this term.

Especially with Josh being Josh.

Needing a quiet place to think things over, the Gryffindor captain made his way back down to the pitch and into the solemn, empty locker room. Simon couldn’t help but keep walking back and forth between the benches and vocalizing the names and abilities.

“Wait…was that the last one?” he mused as he paused his pacing realizing his final pick.

There seemed to be a war going on inside the Bennett house, yet it wasn’t one of bloodshed.

“What did you do to my robes?” Simon asked his brother, having found them tinged orange as he went to pack them for school.

“Absolutely nothing. Though I think they’re better now,” the Hufflepuff remarked as he read, trying to hide a smirk behind the book.

“Jonathan…come on. It was just a joke like I said,” the younger blonde said with a pout. If only he knew how to fix them himself.

“I did say two can play at the trick game.”

He had told Kyle it wasn’t going to be easy.

Keeping a secret from the older couple would certainly be a challenge, especially the overly observant auror. When Ali moved from the department to own the café in France, Simon thought there would have been one less thing to worry about since now she wouldn’t be around as much…but then he was thrown a curveball.

Jax was now not just his mentor, but his BOSS!
Can anyone say trouble?

If only the universe had been nice enough to drop clues that it was going to make his life more complicated.

His eyes widened in shock as suddenly there was a grab around his neck and he was squeezed unceremoniously from behind. Hearing the groundkeeper’s words, Simon had to assume it was him seeing as he couldn’t look down enough to identify the arm that held him in place.

She had a surprise for him…yeah well they both got a surprise out of it.

Those words were silent as his mouth hung open, unable to speak properly with the hold, his hands reaching up to try and free himself. Finally he was released to breathe freely again.

What in Merlin’s Beard?!

“One set of keys to the car” Simon said returning to Kyle’s side once more, his quarry dangling from his fingertips. Paying attention to Jax’s habits had come in handy for once.

“Oooo wonderful. This is going to be great!” The former Ravenclaw clearly excited about their plans.

“Yeah it will. And the least we could do,” he remarked with a laugh that was soon echoed by his girlfriend. With the key sticking in the lock it proved also useful having been exposed to muggle items like cars by his family.

One decorated Ford Anglia for the newlyweds coming up.

Simon didn’t know what was worse…the corpulent man awake or asleep.

Silence would be a blessing after his spitting and talking nonsense if it didn’t come with a pricey exchange. For while one end of the lord went quiet, the other worked to make up for it in far more disturbing sounds. All in all it was like watching paint dry breathing in ozone so you simply read or talked on one’s own to keep distracted until you risked escaping.

Who would have thought that Borr the boar would be such a bore?

Try to say that three times fast.

Simon figured the invitation, debating on going or not. Sure Jimmy was an acquaintance and they had worked together on the defense classes and might be considered friends. But would it be awkward seeing as if he remembered correctly most of his other friends didn’t like him?

He’d bring Kyle…a fellow Ravenclaw from their mutual year to ease the way.

Now there was just a matter of a gift since he felt it appropriate. It took some time before he stumbled on a fitting choice.

“PERFECT!”

A Griffinclaw scarf from a Gryffindor to a Ravenclaw who wanted to be so.

The end of the term was one of mixed blessings.

Summer was a pleasant anticipation, but it was precluded by the appearance of finals beforehand. And so Simon found himself in the library studying for the latest one.

“The expression or destiny number is the combination of the reduced values of each of your names,” he mused as he looked over the calculations in his notes from the class. Focusing intently on the work, he unconsciously bit into the tip of his quill, making a face when he realized what he had done.

Simon had lost track of time, having enjoyed his time up in the air, and as long as Maida was okay they might have stayed out. However the sky was starting to darken and he knew his father wouldn’t be pleased if they flew much longer.

“Whoa…” he said as they came in for a landing, giving the signal to slow once all four feet were back on the ground. The Aethonan obediently responding and moving from a gallop to a more long-legged gait as they moved back to the stables.

“Good girl.” He rewarded her, rubbing down her neck.

23. Telescope
--1st Year--

“Can anyone locate Cassiopeia in the sky?” The professor questioned, walking around the perimeter of the classroom and looking over her students. “Remember what season it is.”

Looking through the viewfinder, Simon tried to pinpoint the constellation’s whereabouts, glancing every now and then at the charts of his textbook.

“Found it Professor!” A classmate across the room exclaimed as the first year was making adjustments for better luck. With a sigh, the Gryffindor gave up his search as did his two companions on either side.

No point looking in the wrong direction.

Telescopes couldn’t well look around corners…even rounded ones.

--7th Year--

Simon couldn’t even imagine what the gift before him could be.

He could have tried guessing but seeing as he was surrounded by friends anxious to see him open all his gifts , the 7th year doubted they’d be that patient. So he simply reached his fingers to the boy and undid the knot, slowly but surely undoing the wrappings…in turn undoing the mystery of the package’s contents.

Oh man…it was beautiful.

“Thank you…I don’t know what to say,” The birthday boy said beaming at the gift-giver as he lifted the gift up for all to see.

What a surprise.

9. Defense Against the Dark Arts
--5th Year--

The lethifold just wouldn’t give up.

Simon had tried all the spells he could think of against it…the ones known to work against the dark creature and a few he threw out there to see if it had any effect. Nothing. And it was getting closer to him and he was running out of options.

‘Yahh!” he exclaimed, attempting a break for it.

Suddenly he found himself back in the comfort and safety of the common room, sitting at one of the tables and his textbook spread out in front of him.

He really needed to stop studying before bed.

46. Dungeon
--Third Year--

One moment everything seemed normal…the next, the merfolk had flooded parts of the castle and now the four houses were all camped inside the two towers that under different circumstances only held two.

Oh what fun!

Not…

But one had to have thought at the time of construction, that building rooms UNDER the Black Lake was just asking for trouble. And that was AFTER one contemplated how to actually do so. So why seem surprised when something actually happened?

Simon would never understand it, he just hoped things would be squared away soon enough. Things were getting tense around here.

Simon was irritated.

Well that was an understatement…he was upset. Here he was having a nice life and SOMEBODY had to bring up an unpleasant scenario…a rotten idea.

“I’m sorry…does that work,” I said as I tried to calm him down as he paced, mumbling under his breath.

“Well I don’t know…did the idea finally get nexed or is it a go?” Simon questioned as he paused momentarily, the YATI looking expectantly as if hoping for the former so bad.

“No, it’s still up in the air,” I answered.
“Then NO…it’s not working for me.”

Anyone want a bothered creation?

--Graduated--

Life had been simpler back then…

And the family home was filled with the sounds of him, his parents and Jonathan. (And his father’s menagerie of course.) However that wouldn’t last forever as first one sibling and then the other left home. First for Hogwarts then for the whole of the wizarding world.

Simon had to admit he did actually miss it at times.
…the sights…sounds…smells
…the fighting of brothers
…the comforts of home

It was more prevalent now that Sabel was gone from the flat and for the first time ever…he was alone.

Oh how far he had come.

--Second Year--

“Pa-tri-culus Totalus.”

Simon tried the spell once more but again nothing happened. It had worked for the professor and he was sure that he was doing everything just so. The second year had just wished he’d had a chance to actually practice in front of the professor. Then he’d know what was wrong.

Woops...

Have to spell it right to say it right. Scratching out his mistake, he copied it correctly into his notes this time around. The boy murmuring the incantation before finally casting it with wand.

"Petrificulus Totalus!"

There...he was now the proud owner of a frozen bat.

11. History of Magic
--Fifth Year--

Ugg! That was it.

Simon slammed his textbook shut with a sigh. This class was going to kill him. There were just too many events and dates to keep track off and he was sure he’d never keep them straight for the exam.

He’d had enough for now…but the exam was next week…maybe just a little longer.

The fifth year opened the book up to a random page, his eyes brushing over a mention and staring.

Professor Binns
History of Magic Professor
Died one day and continued right on teaching as a ghost.

Okay…so he wouldn’t be the first casualty.
