Welcome to the Holiday Ficlet Challenge thread of Alicia and her current School RPG character, Aryan Zahid Atreyu-Rehman! These ficlets - in addition to me taking part in this lovely challenge - will follow the life of Ary. Can you tell that I'm SUPER DUPER EXCITED about this?

Prompt #18: Tinsel

Aryan was… confused.

The minute before, he had been careful wrapping bright purple tinsel around the bottom of the newly acquired Christmas tree and the next? HE was wrapped in tinsel of every colour! The eleven year old sat down rather suddenly on the floor among the boxes and boxes of ornaments and other decorations that littered the floor of the huge living room. Yes, Christmas was a HUGE thing in the Atreyu-Rehman household.

But back to this mass of confusion.

Ary’s hands were pinned to his sides - not tightly - so he attempted to wiggle them free. “Come on,’’ he huffed. Once he was free, he would get his revenge on Dynah. Yes, this was somehow her doing. At least this was his thought until he heard a round of familiar humorous laughter.

“Dad!’’

The fact that the prankster turned out to be Dad Adi made so much sense. Dynah could not have magically bounded him as she was still under age.

“Ha ha. Very funny.” Ary rolled his eyes but he was grinning. “Okay, fine. You win. Free me, please.”

And maybe help him to decorate the higher parts of the tree?

Prompt #03: Candy Canes

An idea had hit thirteen year old Aryan while he was out on the Reserve, traipsing among the dragon enclosures, hippogriff enclosures and the little paddock where Artax roamed. He could send little bundles of sweets to Bry, Drake and Gilly! His eyes had lit up as though there had been a literal lightbulb igniting above him.

“I’ll be back soon, Artax!’’ he called, waving to his Mooncalf before dashing as quickly as his legs would take him towards the house. Ary hurried to the kitchen. He had seen them only recently… no doubt his daddy had gotten them during a mad raid of the Muggle sweetshops. There was enough to hand out to every kid in the worl- aha! There they were!

Standing on a stepping stool, the rummaging he had been doing through the cupboards came to a halt. Wow. Dad Adi sure wasted no time collecting all these candy canes of different colours. Ary set to work: three bundles of candy canes comprised of two canes of each colour. There were about twelve canes in each bundle, which were then tied with red and green ribbons.

The perfect treat {the first of many} for his friends!

Prompt #17: Wreath

“What do you think?”

Ary held the bright green wreath at arm’s length so that Artax the Mooncalf could examine his latest find. “It even has bells.” He gave the object a smart shake so that the bells at the bottom of it jiggled in pleasant sounds. Much to the eleven year old’s disappointment, his creature companion was heartily uninterested. This much Ary gathered from the way Artax fixed him with a stare before continuing on his business of eating.

“Rude.” Ary wrinkled his nose. “Why aren’t you in a festive mood, Arty? I mean… look at this!” He stuck his head through the wreath so that it came to a rest on his shoulders. He then shimmied himself so that there was jiggling with every shimmy. Still Artax was unmoved.

“Tough crowd, tough crowd.”

Prompt #24: Ice Skating
{180 words}

Something that Ary in his twelve years of life had never managed to perfect no matter how many times he practiced was ice skating. Occasional reflection about why this may be always led him back to one thing: he was afraid of falling. He couldn’t think what else it could be. This was why he always held Bry’s hand whenever they skated together.

Today, though, he was out with Drake. Would Ary’s other best friend let him hold his hand? Secretly? Secretly Ary wanted to hold Drake’s hand, and it had everything to do with the recent confusing development on his part where he found himself attracted to both Bry and Drake.

The little Slytherin just decided to go for what his little heart wanted. As the boys left the edge of the frozen pond, Ary slipped his left hand into Drake’s right. He looked over to his friend, figuring he’d say something about hoping Drake didn’t mind the hand holding.

But he already had his answer. Drake’s bright, warm and reassuring smile told Ary what he needed to know.

Prompt #01: Carols

Three year old Ary sat on the floor, surrounded by those Muggle vehicular toys he loved playing with so much. However, his attention was not on said toys but up at the television. There were people singing on the screen. Though he did not know the words, his brain recognised the melody. It was Jingle Bells, a carol - among the many carols - that were often heard at his house.

The toddler was quite fascinated, not by the music or the elegant display of festive clothing but with the fact that there was a group of people who found the time to make so much noise with their mouths. Even at this young age, Ary knew that he hated talking, and that he would not enjoy singing as much as these people. It was why he had not yet uttered a single word in his three years, something which worried his parents. Clearly he was way behind on his speaking abilities.

The little guy, losing interest after a bit, grabbed his fire truck and began pushing it along the floor. There would be no carolling from him any time soon.

Prompt #09: Mistletoe

Ary ran as fast as his legs could take him and as quickly as he could without his lungs being depleted of oxygen. Let’s face it, he was never, ever going to be decent at athletics. This was something he already knew even at ten years old. He dived behind a tall and magnificent tree that stood on the Reserve. His chest heaved with the short effort of running but he was listening hard for Bryony.

“Ary! Where ares you?”

The guy wasn’t silly. He knew better than to answer.

“It promise I won’ts makes you kiss me!”

Again… he wasn’t going to fall for that, Bry! If her intention was not to make him kiss her, even on the cheek, why had she been trying to hold it over their heads?

“Founds you!”

Ary started and almost had a panic attack when he found himself looking back at Bry. “No, you didn’ts!” he shouted and took off running again.

Bry was going to be the death of him, if running didn’t finish him off first.

Prompt #21: Snowman

Aryan might be twenty one years old now but still rather enjoyed making a good ole snowman by himself. It was one of those calming exercises that did well for his mental health, and let’s just say he had a lot on his mind right now. Not wanting to be a bother to anyone by talking about it, he had draped himself in warm clothing before stepping out into the cold, snowy day.

Of course, there was no greater joy than creating a snowman manually. Roll, roll, roll went great masses of snow - three in various sizes. Pat, pat, pat went his gloved hands, whipping them into proper shape. Stack, stack, stack they went - arranged in huge, medium, small order. The final touches were added: sticks for arms, stones for buttons and Ary’s own old clothing which he had salvaged from his vast wardrobe.

Ary dropped to his bum at the base of the snowman. Together, they gazed out towards the Dragons’ caves and enclosures. “Nice view, isn’t it?”

Was the question directed to his new friend?

Maybe.

Would it reply?

Who knew?

Prompt #05: Scrooge

“Stops being such a Scrooge!’’

“Am nots.”

“Then whys don’t you wants to go sees the dragons? Ands the griffs?”

Ary could feel one of Bry’s tantrums coming on. Today, however, he was in no mood to deal with it, no matter how stellar he was at doing so. He pulled his Mooncalf patterned duvet over his head just as he felt the weight shift on his bed. This meant Bry had hopped on it.

“Why nots, Ary! Why nots?”

He then felt fingers poking into his side. Ary, still fully covered, tried to shift away. “Nots feeling wells.” Ary didn’t tell Bry to leave him alone; it was known that whenever she was over at the Reserve she always stuck to his side.

“What da matters? You wants soup?”

“Nuh uh.”

“Teas?”

There was silence from him for a moment as he considered the offer. “Teas.”

“Otay! I go tell Uncle Adi, Scrooge!’’

Ary listened to Bry’s footsteps as they retreated. He was being no Scrooge, even if he refused at the moment to give away his time to the creatures.

Prompt #13: Gingerbread

Under the watchful eyes of his parents, Ary had been allowed to attempt to bake gingerbread cookies with Drake who happened to be spending some time at the Reserve.

“Your chef’s hat,’’ Ary remarked, placing the white hat over Drake’s nice hair. He took some time perfecting its perch at a jaunty angle but at the same time, an angle that would ensure the hat stayed on Drake’s head.

“Thanks! Where do we begin?”

“Says heres we need to mix flour, brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt in a large mixing bowl.” This seemed easy enough in Ary’s opinion.

“I got the bowl!” Sure enough, Drake, who clearly had made himself at home after so many visits to the Reserve that he knew where everything was stored, had placed a ginormous bowl on the counter.

“I’ll gets the flour!” Ary scurried off.

“I’ll get the sugar -”

Drake’s words were abruptly cut as he disappeared behind a white cloud of flour. Ary had thrown handfuls of it at him in a moment of playfulness.

“Ary!’’ Drake sputtered.

But Ary, giggling, had already taken off to escape whatever revenge Drake planned.

So much for them baking gingerbread goodness!

Prompt #20: Presents

Ary was not a big spender of money even if he was usually in possession of more than he knew what to do with. The truth was, he would rather spend it on the people he loved and one of those people happened to be Gillyweed Beery.

For her Christmas present - or presents since there were multiple -, the seventeen year old had thought long and hard about what to get her. Then he had researched and schemed about how to best source the articles he required. It may have taken him weeks to acquire all that was wanted but in the end, he was proud of himself.

“Merry Christmas, Gilly,’’ Ary told his sometimes partner in crime sincerely. This was so because Ary could always count on Gilly to sit with him in moments of silence when he was feeling worn out from being in the company of two overly energetic best friends. “I hope you like them.”

His gift idea had been a stack of old books of various genres, most of which were either limited editions or first editions. [/QUOTE]

Prompt #08: Chestnuts

“Aunty Lux?”

“Hmm?”

“Is that safe?” nine year old Ary asked in concern. He was staring at the burner, the type which they alway sussed in potion brewing, over which one of Dad Adi’s girl best friends had magically strung some chestnuts to be roasted.

“Of course, my little worrisome Ary!” Lux chirped and at the same time gave him a hug. “I would never put you in danger, would I?”

“No,’’ Ary replied, handing Lux back a fleeting hug.

“Here. You can be Aunty’s little helper by peeling the skins off these. Don’t worry, they’re fully cooled.”

Ary peered down at the huge bowl of roasted chestnuts Lux had given him. “It smells greats!”

Lux chuckled. “That it does! Be sure not to eat them all though, or your dad would not let me hear the end of it. He’ll think we purposely finished them without him.”

The little helper grinned. “He woulds! He’s gots such a big appetite.” But he got to work diligently, though an occasional peeled chestnut would disappear into his mouth.

Prompt #06: Jolly

“Ho, ho, ho!’’

Ary’s ears perked up. Could it be?

Santa?!

“Merry Christmas!’’

The five year old sprinted into the living room, the spot where the holly, jolly voice was coming from. He soon found himself staring up at a rather round Father Christmas complete with the proper clothing attire and a huge sack over a shoulder.

Ary planted his fists on his hips. “Are you the real Santa?”

“Why, of course I am!’’

“Prove it.”

“My, my. What a little skeptic you are!”

Ary remained staring at ‘Santa’ as though silently forcing him to offer proof.

Santa sighed extra dramatically. “Fine, I’ll show you my sack. Only the real Santa would have a sackful of toys.” It was the process of setting the sack on the ground that it happened - Santa’s luscious white beard and moustache fell off.

“Uncle Henric!’’ Ary burst out laughing at the sight of one of his favourite adults. “I should haves known it was you!”

“You caught me, Ary!”

“Yes. Yes, I dids.”

Prompt #25: Ugly Sweater

“Are you goings to gets her an ugly sweater?” Ary asked Dynah as he jumped onto her bed. He liked watching his sister wrap presents. There was just something soothing about the way she meticulously cut, wrapped and taped the festive paper.

Dy cast a glance at the sweaters on her bed. “I don’t get why they’re called ‘ugly’. I don’t think there’s anything ugly about them.”

“That doesn’t answers the question.” He plucked absently at his own ‘ugly’ sweater, bearing a hippogriff in a Santa outfit.

“You, darling little brother, are nosy!”

“That’s I am,’’ the first year replied, smiling sweetly.

That got him an eye roll and a grin before Dy went back to her presents. “No. I got Tam two tickets to the London Symphony Orchestra show next Easter.”

“Hopings she’ll take you?” Ary asked slyly.

“Maybe. Yes. I don’t know. It’s up to her to decide who she takes, isn’t it?”

“Uh huh.” Aryan hopped off the bed. “You should just tells her you likes her and be done with it, scaredy cat.” He poked her in the thigh before making his escape. He wouldn’t count on Dy not to pay him back for his cheek.

Prompt #10: Bells

It seemed that everywhere Ary {along with the rest of his family} went on this lovely Christmas Eve night, there were Santas. The red suited man with their bells and cheery greetings could not be escaped, especially in the Muggle public places.

“Santa!” the three year old exclaimed from his perch in Adi’s arms as they made their way through the crowd. He pointed to Santa and his elf, meeting and greeting children. The sight had Ary being momentarily distracted from all the pretty lights.

“Want to go meet him?”

Ary peered at his dad, his little fist curling into a fist as he grasped the man’s shirt. Santas scared him a little. Not decor Santas… the real ones. How did he tell his family that? He was afraid they wouldn’t like him anymore if they knew.

As fate would have it, Santa chose at that moment to ring his bell energeticall. Ary jumped at the sound and quickly hid his face in Adi’s shoulder. His father laughed quietly.

“I think we have an answer. It’s okay, Ary. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Ary felt himself being hugged a little closer; he knew that his dad’s words were true.

Prompt #04: Chimney

“Do you reallys thinks we’ll catch hims this way?” Ary was skeptical.

Bry nodded, determined as ever for a successful mission. “Yep, yep! If we sleeps in front of the chimney, we is gonna sees hims for sure.”

“Wouldn’ts Santa knows that we’re tryna sees him? What ifs he find another way in?”

“Santas only comes down through chimneys, Ary.”

“Okay, okay. We’ll camps out here.” Aryan snuggled into his sleeping bag, his gaze fixed on the fireplace at Bry’s house. He knew in his six year old heart that this wasn’t going to work but he couldn’t disappoint Bry. So, like Aunty Hady and Uncle Frankie, he had humoured her. This was how he had ended up in the living room this Christmas Eve in a sleeping bag on the floor.

The only issue was Ary was already feeling sleepy; his eyelids were heavy.

“Wants a bite of my brownie?”

Ary didn’t answer. He couldn’t.

He had dozed off.

Prompt #07: Eggnog

NEWTs were still months away but Ary was stressed.

What even was the point of major exams when he already was quite capable of dealing with many magical creatures? Sometimes he considered not going to University but then he reminded himself - as did his parents - that having additional qualifications opened brought more options. Meaning, Ary would not be limited to just handling the family Reserve.

“Here. This’ll help.”

Ary looked up from his place on the ground under one of the trees overlooking the Reserve. His face broke into a smile. “Thanks.” He sniffed the glass, inhaling the scent of eggnog mixed with a hint of firewhisky as Drake flopped next to him with his own glass.

“It helps that we’re seventeen years!”

Ary laughed. “It does.” He took a sip; it was delicious.

“Just don’t down it all in one go,’’ Drake teased.

“I won’t.”

Ary was aware that Drake was watching him.

“You’ll do better than you expect.”

“I hope so.” The younger boy sighed and rested his head on Drake’s shoulder. “Sorry for being a damper on your holiday.”

“You’re not.” Just like he always did, Drake in turn rested his own head against Ary’s.

Prompt #12: Reindeer

Ary count not believe it! He could not believe the level of patience Artax was displaying by standing perfectly still and allowing him and Bry to continue their shenanigans. When Ary had suggested they dress the little mooncalf as a reindeer, he had been expecting some rebellion. Not from Bry, of course; she was all in with his idea. No, he had expected rebellion from Artax. This opposite reaction came as a pleasant surprise.

Bry giggled. “Ary, Ary! Artax looks so cutes with the antlers!”

Aryan could not agree more. “Cuters, you means.” He hugged Artax around the neck, careful not to disturb the fake antlers he and Bry had attached to Artax’s head.

“We needs the red nose nows. Then hims can be Artax the Red Nose Reindeer!”

Laughing, Ary asked the creature, “What do you think?”

Artax tossed his head from side to side.

“He says the nose is toos much, Bry.”

“Is hims sure?”

“Uh huh.”

“Fines.” Bry pouted to show her disappointment.

Merlin! Let there be no temper tantrum!

Prompt #16: Plum Pudding

It didn’t make sense at all.

“Why is it called ‘Plum Pudding’ if there are no plums?” Ary spoke clearly and deliberately into his phone, too lazy to type the question into the search engine. All his life, he had been eating the confectionery; every Christmas it was served and never had he ever paused to entertain the possibility that there were no plums in this particular pudding.

The answer came back almost at once, the automated voice narrating: This goes back to the Victorian practice of substituting dried plums with other dried fruits, such as raisins. Dried plums or prunes were so popular that any goods which contained dried fruits were referred to as 'plum cakes' or 'plum puddings'.

“Interesting and weird,” the twelve year old muttered. He set aside his phone, his gaze affixed on the small slice of freshly baked plum pudding sitting on a plate. “It doesn’t matter though. As long as it tastes delicious.” Picking up a fork, Ary delved into the festive delicacy.

Prompt #02: Advent

And so the baby Hippogriff that Ary had long ago told Bry he would have gotten her had arrived.

Actually, many baby griffs had arrived but Dad Adi had been adamant about ensuring Bry reach an age he deemed proper before she actually became the owner of the said creature.

“You can’t see throughs my fingers, right?” Ary asked. He instinctively clamped his fingers tighter together as he guided Bry to the paddock.

“Nope! Not a things!”

“Good, good. Okay… stop walking.”

Bry obediently came to a halt, having fully trusted Ary to get her safely to wherever it was he had wanted her to be.

“Keeps your eyes closed for a bit more.”

Once his friend confirmed that she would, Ary removed his hands.

“Opens your eyes!’’

Bry did and the first thing she saw was a newborn Griff fast asleep under the protective wing of its mother.

“Dad said you haves to be thirteen befores you gots a griff but I talked him into lettings you have it before. Merry Christmas, Bry.”

There was no surprise about what followed: Bry squealing and jumping around excitedly before throwing herself into Ary’s arms to squeeze the life out of him.

Prompt #22: Coal

Ary was not going to be getting a lump of coal in his Christmas stocking.

Nope!

That was why he was refusing to take part in Dynah’s practical joke on their dad. Not this time. Sorry, sister loveliest!

The eleven year old folded his arms and leaned against the doorway to the kitchen. “How does one go from wrapping presents to suddenly wanting to prank their dad?” he questioned in amusement.

“Because,’’ Dy replied patiently as the balloon she had just filled with water was knotted at the top. “I haven’t pranked dad in a while.”

“I expect to see you have little to no presents this year,’’ Ary smartmouthed.

“Shush, little brother! You know Dad… he’ll pretend to be mad then laugh his head off a second later.”

“Uh huh. It helps that he’s a prankster himself. Still… I’ll be observing from a safe distance. I refuse to help you with your pranks until after the holidays.”

“Have it your way! Oooh, I cannot wait to see Dad’s face when I throw these at him!’’ Balancing her balloons, Dy set off for the outdoors. In her wake trailed Ary… at a fair pace behind.

Prompt #15: Nutcracker

“It’s a giant Nutcracker!”

Ary laughed, highly amused, as he watched the wonder and awe on Drake’s face as they came up before an extremely tall Nutcracker which was a part of the decor of the Christmas Village they were visiting.

“He’s twice, no, thrice my height!”

“That’s because you’re short,’’ Ary quipped, bobbing his head. He was very much teasing the other boy, of course.

“I’m not that short!” the sixteen year old replied, poking Ary in the arm. He marched over to the Nutcracker to stand by its side. “Grab a picture of us, please.”

Ary was only happy to oblige. Using his phone, he clicked a few pictures of Drake and the Nutcracker. “Okay! I’ve got a couple of you and your boyfriend.”

Drake made a face at Ary, who was grinning.

“So what do you think? You both look quite photogenic if you ask me.”

“Meh. I look okay.”

Ary snorted. “If you say so. I think you look quite cute.” He linked his arm through one of Drake’s. “Shall we venture on to look for more Nutcrackers, then?”

Drake patted Ary’s hand that was linked through his. “Thank you! And yes, please!”

Prompt #11: Sleigh

It had been Ary’s idea.

After he and Bry had finished dressing Artax like a reindeer, he had asked his dad to dig out the sleigh that had been around for a few years now. Adi did so and hitched it the Mooncalf; the man had even gone as far to use the Featherlight Charm so Artax wouldn’t feel the combined weight of Ary and Bry.

The pair clambered into the sleigh after Adi was done. It was a tightly squishy fit but Ary doubted Bry minded he was sitting that close to her.

“Away, Artax!”

The Mooncalf began trotting through the snow. Ary turned to Bry, grinning. “He’s doings it!”

“Hims is!” Bry yelled, quite deafening Ary but he forgave her as he usually did. “Hims a smarts Mooncalfs! Go, Artax, goes!” In her excitement, she grabbed Ary’s hand but he didn’t mind. He simply intertwined his fingers happily with hers.

Artax seemed to be enjoying himself for he went from trotting to gently running, making the landscape of the Reserve dart by. When this was over, Ary would reward the creature with treats and hugs.

Prompt #19: Fruitcake

December 2106 - three days before Christmas - found Ary in Grandma Rehman’s kitchen. Though he didn’t know it then, this would be her last Christmas before she would pass away in September 2107.

“What goes in da fruit cakes? Apples? Bananas?”

Indira laughed and ruffled her grandson’s hair. “Not quite. Raisins diced dates, candied cherries and my secret - a tiny amount of chopped candied ginger.”

“Oh. Nots whats I was expecting.”

“Sometimes, certain things are never that way,’’ Indira replied, leaving Ary some words of wisdom at the same time. “Want to help stir the batter?”

“Yes!”

Standing on a stool so that he would be able to see over the kitchen island, he took the wooden spoon and began to stir. He used both hands by placing them on the handle.

“Good boy! You make the perfect little assistant.”

“Thanks, Grammy!”

It wasn’t hard work and Ary always looked forward to these special moments.

Prompt #14: Candlelight

Ary wanted to do something special for Bry this Christmas. He wasn’t sure he had been able to top giving her a Hippogriff thirteenth those Christmases ago, nor giving her a dragon for her sixteenth birthday but he still tried.

Despite having all the runarounds with their families that day, he had made the time to ensure everything was ready. Yes, this included him making these preparations days in advance.

On Christmas evening, the twenty one year old guided Bry to the table for two. “Okay, open your eyes.” Ary pulled his own hand away that had been shielding Bry’s eyes. “So, what do you think?”

Bry, not unsurprisingly, squealed excitedly upon taking in the candlelit table filled with her favourite food; the table was also decorated in a Holiday fashion: tinsel, shades of green and red and so forth. “I LOVE IT!!! Thank you!” She threw herself into Ary’s arms.

Prompt #24: Decorate

“This tree is HUGE, Ary! How did you find it?!”

Ary shrugged, grinning at the happiness on Drake’s face. “Just a little searching. I knew you wanted a really tall one so here you are. I think it’s about three times your height? Much like the Nutcracker we saw five years ago.”

“I’m not that short anymore as you thought I was!”

That made Ary laugh. “I agree. Anyway, shall we start decorating?”

“Thank Merlin for magic to help us reach the top!’’

“And everywhere else!”

The young men got to work, often pausing to consult about what piece of decor would look better where. Colourful decor of various designs and tinsel soon filled the tree; not to mention there was and epic tree topper that was a golden star.

“Just one more thing. Or two.” Ary magicked two transparent orbs to come to a rest just below the star. Inside was filled with green confetti; the name ‘MANDRAKE’ was printed in cursive in red on the front of one, ‘ARYAN’ written the same way on the other.

“It’s perfect!” Drake exclaimed, admiring the finished tree. “Thank you!”

“You’re welcome,” Ary replied warmly.
