I own nothing you recognise. All direct quotes are acknowledged below the drabble.
Just a few things I feel I need to explain:
Firstly as I'm English, I use english spelling variations e.g. pyjamas not pajamas. To try and use the american english variations does funny things to my brain, sorry.
I tried not to be gloomy and dour, but I'm better at that stuff, sorry! I'm actually quite a lighthearted person really, honest!

The potions classroom was full of white steam.
“Mr Pettigrew if you do not chop your scurvy-grass into equal pieces, your Befuddlement Draught will be completely ineffective.”
“S-sorry Professor S-s-slughorn”
Sirius hissed, “Not to mention the fact that it’s already the wrong colour, Wormy, get a grip!”
Peter looked at me imploringly. “Help me! Please!”
“Moony can’t help you in the O.W.L. Wormy, you have to learn how to do it yourself”
“But James, if I…”
“No Moony, he has to do it himself. Like Padfoot said, you need to get a grip” The last comment was shot at Peter.

I sat down in the chair by her bed in St. Mungo’s. She opened her eyes.
“Go away Remus.”
I didn’t blame her for being snappish with me, not after everything that had been said and done.
“I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
I was sure, from the look in her eyes, that she wanted very much to jinx me or slap me. She turned away from me very gingerly.
“Kingsley told me that you should have healed by now. I was wondering why you’re still here.”
“Because it’s my fault.”
“How?”
“It just is. Now leave me alone.”

I took a deep breath and knocked. Dora opened the door. Her hair looked… like mine?
“You’d best come in.”
“I brought you some…” “Chocolate? Why?”
“Well, it always makes me feel better.”
She didn’t laugh or smile. There were no jokes. Had I done this to her?
“I’m sorry, I miss him too, but he told me that we were right for each other, he told me if I reminded you to live…”
She was crying now and I could do nothing but gather her into my arms and hold her. It felt right even though I knew it was wrong.

74. Extinguish
We sat for a long time, holding each other, both crying. After all I had done to extinguish the passion I felt for her, here I was holding her. This was a mistake.
“Did you mean it Remus? When you said you couldn’t ever love me?”
“It’s not a matter of love. I’m too old, too poor, too dangerous for you. You need someone young and free.”
She kissed me. Her lips felt glorious and I returned her kiss. Everything else fell away.
Reality came crashing in. I pushed her backwards, feeling bereft of her touch.
“I can’t do this.”

“Nonsense. Sirius told me all about the time you were cornered by that huge warlock in Southampton. He reckoned that if you hadn’t been there, he’d have…”
“Died. Yes, I suppose he probably would have.”
There was a very awkward pause.
“Well, it seems that you have a habit of my protecting my family Remus. Thank you.”
Andromeda looked like she was about to cry.

I hadn’t found a compartment to sit in. Suddenly, a door slid back and a girl with red hair and a boy with black hair stalked off down the corridor. Inside the compartment two boys were laughing loudly.

I settled into a seat by the window and got out my copy of Hogwarts: A History.
“You don’t want to bother with that mate. I reckon that the only important bit is just about to start. I’m James Potter.”
He stuck out his hand.

Ted could see Dora in the corner of the bar, holding hands with Lupin. Now he understood; what his daughter actually wanted were witnesses.
“Dad, Mother, Remus and I have got something to tell you. We’re getting married!”
The last few words were a squeal. Ted thought Lupin looked nervous, he was right to. Ted could feel how his wife had stiffened next to him, her expression would be murderous.
“I was under the impression you thought yourself unfit for my daughter.” Andromeda's voice was icy.

Biggest Mistake.
45. torch
The muggle torch in my hand flickered out. Brian took it from me.
“What’s up with the stupid thing?”
I thought it might be my magic, it happened when I was around muggle things like torches. I wasn’t aloud to play with the boys from the village and I knew I’d be in trouble. We’d built a den by the river, but now it was dark and I knew my mother would be worried.
Brian switched the torch back on and we started to walk home. Behind us we could hear odd noises, as though and animal was following us.

Snape Suspects.
39. Duel
I felt something whizz past my head and turned to see Snape with his wand out, already firing off another hex. I drew my wand and we started to duel. He couldn’t break my Sheild Charm and this made him angrier.
“Why on earth did you attack me?”
“I know what you are! I’ll prove it! And then, it won’t just be me that’s after you!”
He looked completely unbalanced.
There was a loud bang and we were both blasted onto our backs.
“Explain yourselves!”
Professor McGonagall looked like she might breathe fire.
“Snape seems to think that I’m dangerous.”

Mary Seacole
77. Cheerful
I woke up to find a worried face staring down at me.
“What are you doing here? Did Sirius send you?” She’d covered me with a blanket.
“No, he didn’t. I came to make sure that you were ok.”
I sat up slowly, looking for my wand and clothes.
“When did you get here?”
“Just after dawn.”
She knew what she was doing then. That thought, along with her concerned smile, made me feel ridiculously cheerful. She kept herself safe, but she'd come to make sure I was safe too.
“Come on then Mary Seacole, time for breakfast.”
“Mary who?”
(Mary Seacole was a nurse from Jamaica who wanted to go to help the soldiers in the Crimean War. After she was turned down by various official bodies, she set off on her own and opened the British Hotel near the front line, providing rest, recuperation and medical treatment for those most in need of it. She was incredibly brave and quite stubborn too. Remus knows who she is because he’s very well read  )

“This is your classroom, Professor” Minerva smiled warmly.
My own classroom. Despite the lateness of the hour, I busied myself with getting it ready, setting up models and tanks, checking which books were on the shelves, cleaning the blackboard, rooting in the cupboards to make sure nothing nasty was lurking in there. I looked around the clean and organised classroom and my heart swelled. I opened the door to the office and saw that the same jobs would need to be repeated in here too. I rolled up my sleeves and made a start. This is going to be a good year.

For Steph, who likes angst, but thinks I’m cruel to Remus
38. Patronus
I felt an overwhelming urge to protect Harry, as though he were mine. Doubt nagged at the back of my mind; was teaching him the Patronus Charm the best way to protect him? The Dementors certainly seemed to be targeting him, as though they knew how much pain they could force him to feel. Was I a good enough teacher? Albus had taught me how to do the charm, how could I possibly emulate him?
I looked at the photograph of James and Lilly’s wedding. I knew that had the situation been reversed, James would have taught my son to defend himself.

66. Pace
I ran, trying to keep up with Dora’s impressive pace. At five months pregnant, she could still run faster than me. The Death Eaters had been following us for a week and had chosen the day after full moon to attack, expecting me to be weak. I realised too late that we had run into a dead end. We were trapped. I only just managed to block the spells raining in on us. We traded spells with the Death Eaters.
“You have to Apparate!”
“But what about the baby?”
“We’re both going to be dead in a minute if we don’t go! You first!”
(To my mind Apparating when pregnant would be risky, what if you splinched yourself or the baby?)

10. Arithmancy
Arithmancy had never been my strongest subject; language was my mistress, not numerical theory. I looked down at the complicated charts and wondered if I would ever finish interpreting them. They were important, I was sure of it. Sirius knocked gently on the door.
“I brought you a butterbeer.”
“Thanks, that’s great.”
He set it down on the desk and started to chat. I welcomed the distraction, having no real desire to get back to the charts.
Sirius was recounting his story a little too enthusiastically and knocked the butterbeer all over the charts.
“It looks like clumsiness is a family trait!”

5. Astronomy
I stared up at the stars and Sirius caught my eye. I wondered how many years it would be before I would be able to look up at the constellations and not think of my friend. The Dog Star twinkled in the same way that Sirius’ eyes would when he had a new plot for the Marauders.
“Look Teddy, that is Sirius. He would have liked you. He probably would have called you the technicolour cub.”
The boy in my arms pointed upwards, as though trying to reach the person he had been introduced to in his first astronomy lesson.

James had fallen asleep in a chair by the fire. He was snoring lightly and Sirius was all for sticking marshmallows up his nose. Before he could, James jerked awake.
“Have a nice nap did you?”
“Not exactly no. I was married to Evans. We were happy, we had a baby, a son who we’d named after my dad. We were in a cottage that we couldn’t leave and then…”
His face whitened.
“And then?” I prompted.
“And then some bloke who looked a bit like a snake came and killed us all.”
Sirius looked sceptical.
“You want to lay off the Stilton, mate."
(Stilton is a type of really strong cheese).

3. Transfiguration
The hatred between James, Sirius and Snape was reaching an all time high. For weeks there had been sneaky hexes, ambushes and a nasty curse or two. I saw Snape was goading Sirius in particular, calling him a coward, an idiot, a whining child, a talentless fool.
Sirius had planned an elaborate attack on Snape, involving a stolen Mandrake, but at dinner Snape finally pushed him too far.
Professor Mcgonagall walked into the great hall, just in time to see Sirius turn Snape into a toad.
“While I appreciate your Transfiguration skills Mr Black, your use of them is highly inappropriate! Restore him. NOW!”

Peter was trying to do a Switching Spell, but it wasn’t working.
“How on earth do you ever expect to be an animagus if you can’t switch cactus spines for toothpicks?” Sirius hissed at him.
Peter flushed a dull red. Sometimes I felt that James and Sirius were too hard on Peter. He wasn’t as confident as them and his magic didn’t seem as powerful as theirs, or even equal to my own. It always felt that we were proping him up all the time. James and Sirius seemed to get tired of this at times, and that caused them to be quite unpleasant.

One Month Later.
81. Depression
It was the first full moon since I had lost them all. I lay there, aching, stiff, bloodied and bruised and finally the tears rolled down my face. Self pity, depression and self loathing settled over me. Why was I still alive? Why hadn’t I seen Sirius’ treachery? No answers came to me and still the tears flowed.
I lay there until it was dark again. No-one had come to find me, for the first time in my life. This was how it was going to be now. Perhaps I deserved isolation; perhaps it should always have been this way.

I looked at the two of them, curled together in my mother’s rocking chair, one pink haired, one turquoise and my heart swelled. I was choked with love, cemented in the present moment, with no desire for time to move on. How could I ever have risked not having them both? As tears ran down my cheeks, words sprang to my lips;
“Thank you.”
“What for?”
“For loving me, for not giving up on us, for Teddy.”
“You beautiful, silly man. You and I, we, are a perfect fit. I fit you and you fit me. And this one completes us.”

“Werewolf!”
The shout soared through the chaotic night.
I turned to see Dolohov striding towards me purposefully, blocking spells as he cut his way through the battle. The air crackled with curses, others were falling around me, but somehow I was unaware of them, he was all that mattered, him and the murderous glint in his eye. I could stop him…
His wand cleaved the air; with a flash of purple flame there was pain, in my chest, in my stomach, in my heart…
And then everything was gone, everything was light.
