"Now, who can tell me which parts of this plant are poisonous and why?", she asked the class once more. |
Llewellyn raised an eyebrow, not entirely certain that was a complement from his point of view. He gave his fellow Hufflepuffs an odd look, and promptly returned his attention to the class. He then raised his hand again to address the professor's question, "All parts of the plant contain alkaloid Professor, one of the most common lethal chemicals in plants. Alkaloids are poisonous to humans and most animals because as nitrogenous organic molecules they interact with animal physiology in such a way as to cause severe reactions such as vomitting. In many cases they interact with neurotransmitters due to their chemical structure causing narcotic-like side effects such as pain relief, pupil dilation, etcetera. In larger doses, the interaction is typically fatal." Llewellyn looked around shyly, silently wondering to himself if any of the other students' parents were chemists. "Fortunately for most people, ill effects of the plant typically require ingesting." |
Erica continued to take notes, dividing her concentration between the blackboard, the textbook and her notes. She hated Herbology, it not being one of her strong points, but she wasn't worried, seeing how Llew was showing himself to be very competent and capable in this field of study. She gave him a small smile and shrugged to answer his strange look before jotting down even more notes. |
continueing her notes jean finished and gave a small good job thumbs up to llewellyn |
Ross took down as many notes as he possible could! Soon he had to get a fresh peice of parchment to continue. |
Mithos didn't mind that the Hufflepuff boy got it, Hufflepuffs had been always nice to him. It was nice inside the classroom, some people were oddly quiet. |
Xavier chuckles as the professor tells the Hufflepuff they should be in Ravenclaw. "Isn't the necter poisonous?" he asks. |
Amaris took down notes. She had to get the next one. There was no maybe about it. |
Jamie glared at Llewlyn and she chuckled and thought Who would put him in Ravenclaw? |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "3 pts for Huflepuff. Now, where can this chemical be found in the plant?", she asked the class. |
Mithos raised his hand "It is found at the nerve junctions." |
Amaris raised her hand. "Is it inside the flower Professor?" She said frowning. "I know it is produced by glands." |
Martha doesn't know for sure if her answer is right, but she raises her hand and takes a risk, "Is the chemical commonly found in the seeds of the plant?" |
Llewellyn raised his hand again, "Professor, I believe all parts of the plant are toxic and contain diterpenoid alkaloids. Though, seed pods of the plant may contain up to twice as much of the chemical per gram as the leaves and flowers." |
Amaris gawked at Llewellyn and glared at him. She slapped herself on the forehead for not thinking about that. "Why thank you ever so much!" She mouthed to him before banging her head against her desk and leaving it there. |
Amaris, keeping an eye on the Professor's back, bunched up a piece of parchment into a ball. She glared at Llewellyn and threw it. Her aim being so horrible (Hehe :P) all she managed to do was hit Mithos in the back of his head. Amaris blinked. |
"ouch..." he said to himself turning around. Crazy girl he thought to himself, turning back to the Professor. |
Amaris winced and grabbed her wand. She reached out and poked the boy she had hit. He didn't turn around at once so she poked him again. "Oi," she hissed. "You! Boy who I hit on the head!" Amaris whispered. |
Mithos ignored the girl before he would go crazy and stuff those plants in the girls mouth. |
Amaris pouted. "All I wanted to do was apologize," she hissed angrily. "Well go ahead and be a Dukey Head!" Amaris frowned and thwacked Mithos over the head with her wand. |
Kay was distracted from taking notes by the whispering and movements of two students sitting near her. As she turned to see what was happening, she gasped aloud as she watched Amaris hit Mithos on the head with a wand. "Oh! Professor Virohsa!" she exclaimed loudly as she stood up and pointed at the two students with her left hand. |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "You are all correct, for as Llew pointed out, all of this plant is poisonous. 1 pt for Mithos, Amaris, and 3 pts for Llew... for answering the side effects of such poison, which was my next question.. Now, we can..." Professor Virohsa's attention was trailed off by Kay standing up and pointing at Amaris and Mithos. It appeared that Amaris was creating trouble again. "Dear child, I thought you had turned a new leaf!", she said with a hint of exasperation. |
Peony grinned slightly, her quill tickling her chin as she too turned around with the rest of the students to see what was causing all the commotion. |
Sarah wrote down some notes and looked up just as Amaris hit Mithos with her wand, 'That must have hurt' she thought, writing down some more notes. |
Ross tried not to laugh as the cafuffle in the classroom took place. He took more and more notes down and then turned to watch what was happening. |
