Lesson #3 Professor Virohsa enters and opens the door. She waits for the students to come and settle in. |
Lee walks and sits at the back of the room for the third lesson of the term in herbology. Lee hated being here, he hated the subject and the professor who taught it.... she was so mean and snappy all the time. Someone had certainly rasttled her cage every hour. |
Mithos walks in the Hebology Classroom, he walks to the front of the classroom and takes one of the seats in the front row. "Hello Professor Virohsa, how are you doing today?" He said and took out all he needed for this class. He hoped they were going to play around with plants like they did in their first class it was fun. |
"Hello, professor," Arkee cheerfully greeted Virohsa, and unnecessarily curtsied before taking a seat, swinging her legs in a childish fashion. |
Erica enters the class, giving a disgusted look to Virohsa. The professor had fallen out of favor with her ever since the incident at O'Malley's and her snappish attitude didn't help any. She took a place in the back of the greenhouse and waited for the professor's instructions. |
Meghan walked in and took a seat next to Mithos. She sighed and couldn't wait for the class to end. She had the permission slip in her bookbag from this Professor to go to Hogsmead and she was very anxious to go. Resting her cheek on her hand she waited for class to begin. |
Selena entered the class and couldn't figure out why she was here in the first place. Shruggin at her own absent mindedness Selena sat next to Lee. |
Llewellyn walked into class and decided to sit in the back of the greenhouse with his fellow Hufflepuffs. he happily began taking things out of his bag, looking forward to more plants. |
After returning the winter cloak to the Herbology closet and the mithen to Llewellyn, uttering her thanks, Nadia walked inside the classroom at last, finding a seat nearby. Already a couple of students were there. Nadia just sat and waited, making some effort on not looking too sore on her cold-unused muscles and trying to be awake enough to abide to all the rules - something that lately seemed too difficult to her. Every time stress seemed to lower it rose back again. But there was no point in thinking like that. Relaxing her muscles a little, Nadia looked up and awaited for class to start. |
Professor Virohsa gave everyone a small grin. She was extremely pleased regarding their behavior. "Well class, I expect we shall have fun this lesson. As always, our lesson will be divided in parts. For our first part, please take your quill and parchments out", she nodded. "During this lesson we shall discuss magical plants and their relation to St. Mungo's as well as the Ministry. Does anyone have any comments or questions before we begin?", she asked everyone as she waved her wand and the two blackboards came into view. ooc- I just want to warn everyone that I'm feeling very sick. So I may have to space this class out depending on how sick I feel. Ok? |
Jamie walked into the classroom and she took out a quill and some parchment as she did normally and she listened attentively. |
:: Ganymede was sitting next to Nadia. She had successfully changed her hair brown and for the past 3 hours it was the same. Of course it was getting rather boring also. She still had her dove pin in her hair. It twinkled in the lights. Ganymede smiled a smile of thanks to Nadia. The book was helping. :: |
Nadia took Quill and parchment and shook her head to say no to the professor, about having questions. She started to write down some notes, noting the St. Mungo's and Minitry of Magic's part. She wondered what it could be. |
jean takes out a quill and begins to write notes on her fresh parchment |
Meghan looked up in interest. Her mom worked in St. Mungo's so this class may be a good one. She took out her quill and her last couple of pieces of parchement and waited for class to continue. |
Mithos smiled at the Professor, he couldn't wait for the class to start. He looked around and saw Meghan, he smiled at her, and took out parchment and quill. |
Jade settled herself down in a seat in the front row and proceeded to withdraw a quill and a piece of parchment from her pack. |
*Kirstie took out some parchment and dug around in her bag trying to find a quill. She eventuall found one, and turned her attention back to the professor* |
*Vikki took out some parchment and and a quill to write on and waited for the professor to continue* |
Zekk sits there with quill out ready to take notes, if he decided anything was that important. |
Gwen walked slowly in and glanced at the professor. She had never been to a lesson before and couldnt wait to see what it was like. She walked to the back of the class room, hopeing not at attract attention. She pulled out her wand, book, quill, and parchment. |
Amaris saw Gwen walk and smiled. She waved at her from her seat and took down notes. Amaris scoffed when Professor Virohsa mentioned about how they will be learning the relation between magical plant ans the Ministry. Just another way for the Ministry to control the school, thought Amaris. And how the student body thinks. Ama glanced at Ganymede and smiled at her. |
Julia takes out her quill and parchment, and patiently waits for the professor to continue. |
Kali takes out everything that was needed to take notes. She then listens for further instructions. |
Erica didn't bother to answer Virohsa's question, but instead pulled out the necessary materials from her bag and waited for the professor to continue. |
Martha takes out her parchment, quills, and ink and waits for the professor to continue. |
Xavier pulls out some parchment and quills and readies himself or the teacher to begin. |
:: Lauren sitting in the back of the room did as the professor said. She took out everything to take notes and so on. She yawned and put her head down on her desk still looking at the teacher. :: |
Professor Virohsa nodded as none of the children had any questions. "Good! Before we begin I want to make sure everyone knows what the different organizations are. Let's begin with St. Mungo's. Anyone care to offer any information regarding this organization?", she said as she walked around the room. ooc- Please remember not to spam. I'm still sick with a bad cold and I really don't want to have to delete your posts because you were spamming -- it will give me a terrible headache plus. I will continue to ask questions as I feel better. Thanks ;) |
Llewellyn raised his hand and waited to be called, "St. Mungo's is the main ministry approved hospital in charge of treating patients with all ranges of serious maladies. It is also one of the few places in the United Kingdom equipped to deal with patients with magical mental illnesses, I think." |
Kay raised her hand. "St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is the wizarding hospital located behind the facade of the Muggle department store, Purge & Dowse Ltd., in London. The hospital treats a wide assortment of injuries and maladies, including potion and plant poisonings." |
:: Lauren quickly rose her hand in the air. " St. Mungo's Hospital is a Hospital for Wizards and Witches only. No muggles are treated there. It is also a pernament home for some who have lost all memory of their life that they lived. They treat all kinds magical problems, like potion problems, injurys caused by animals, injurys caused by wizards and witches, and injurys caused by dark magic. " Lauren paused for a second. " I think that is all and if I didn't get it right it was worth the try. What do I have to lose. " she put her hand down and waited for the professors reply to the class.:: |
Sarah raised her hand, "St Mungos is based in London and was founded in the late 1500s by Mungo Bonham. It's emblem is a crossed bone and wand and the healers wear lime green robes. And I think it has six floors in total." |
Since her mother worked at St. Mungo's Martha raises her hand and delivers a very detailed answer, "St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is the wizarding hospital of Britain. Doctors at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers. They wear lime-green robes. To become a Healer, a Hogwarts student must have N.E.W.T.s of at least grade E (Exceeds Expectations, second highest possible grade) in the subjects of Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Herbology and Defence Against the Dark Arts. St. Mungo's is located in London. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge and Dowes Ltd. This acts as a magical gateway to the main building, very much like the magical barrier at King's Cross railway station on Platform 9 and 3/4. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors: * Ground Floor. Reception (where a plump, blonde witch greets you as you enter) and Artifact Accidents * Floor 1. Creature-Induced Injuries * Floor 2. Magical Bugs and Diseases * Floor 3. Potion and Plant Poisoning * Floor 4. Spell Damage * Floor 5. Tea Rooms and Hospital Shop St. Mungo's was founded by Mungo Bohnam, the famous Healer, in the 1600's. The exact date is unknown. St. Mungo's emblem is a magic wand crossed with a bone." |
Cherry quickly starts taking down notes, as a tirade of answers ensue the Professor's question. |
Calista was busy taking down notes while others answered. Whew! Great answers! |
Xavier raises his hand. "It's the Wizarding Hospital in London," he starts. "They deal in multiple things." "Including scars and burns," he thinks to himself. |
Raising her hand, "Adding to what Martha said, there's not only Healers but also Medi-Wizards. Their work is practically the same though Healers have more authority and Medi-Wizards are many time sent to help rather than attend in their own place of work. But regardless of that, the task it St. Mungo's is, as said, help people. In the area of poisoning and potions would be where the uses of plant knowledge would be most needed. However, Herbology also come in handy to create anestesia from plants like the Sky Blue Lagoon Nemesia's scent and Dremuni plants and could be used in virtually every area. Antidotes, would-cleaning potions, cathartics... but I might be going a little ahead of myself." Nadia finally lowered her hand, feeling like she had rambled. |
Oh my. Aschere noted down the points in sequence and wondered if werewolves would be lodged in the first floor.. |
trying to get all this down jean scribbles on her paper and trys to think of something else that the others have not said |
:: Lauren put her head down on the desk still looking at the teacher. She waited quitely for her reply. :: |
: Dave walked into the room. He stopped and looked around the room. " Oh has class already started. So sorry Professor. I'll just take my seat now. " he walked to the back of the classroom and winked at Lauren while he sat down beside her, in the back. : |
Professor Virohsa nodded as she heard various answers. As the students gave their answers, the blackboard made an outline of what had already been said. Quote:
She turned to Nadia with interest as she was connecting Herbology to St. Mungo's and was about to make a comment when she was rudely interrupted by a student barging in.. late for class. Her eyes narrowed at the boy. "What do you think this is?!", she questioned him in an irritated voice. "Of course the class already started! Did you fall asleep, boy?", she said impatiently. "You're disrespecting your professor and your fellow students when you come late to class! I hope you are following Hogwarts Code of Conduct. And to make sure you do so, I shall take 10 pts from Slytherin!", she said in a very, very irritated voice. If something certainly irritated her it was when students broke rules in her class. |
:: Lauren looked at Dave astonished and went back to looking at the teacher and taking notes.:: |
:: Dave looked at the teacher. He propped his feet on the desk and crossed his arms and turned to Lauren. " So are we doing anything tonight?" he asked her smiling. :: |
Professor Virohsa looked at the boy start talking during class. "Be quiet! You are not here to chat! For that I shall take another 10 pts from Slytherin", she said warningly. "Another word from you and I want you out of this classroom immediately!" |
:: Lauren looked at Dave. She quickly rose her hand in the air. " Professor, may I please move to the front. I don't want to make Hufflepuff lose points and Slytherin to lose more than they already have. " she said looking sternly at Dave and waiting for the professor's reply.:: |
Professor Virohsa nodded as the girl raised her hand. "Yes, you may dear. Please move quickly and quietly", she nodded as she kept her eyes on the Slytherin boy. |
:: Lauren gathered her stuff quickly and walked quickly to the front of the class and sat down. " Thank you professor. " she said curtising to the professor. It was a habbit to do that now when she said thank you. She wrote down the notes on the board. She rose her hand agian. " Professor, is there any sort of chambers or secret passage ways in St. Mungo's?" she asked politely.:: |
Dave watched Lauren leave to go to the front. He yawned and pulled out some parchment. He started drawing on it making loud scratcy noises with his quill. |
Harmony listened attentively as she took down some notes. This was a very interesting lesson. |
Dave crumbled up his art paper and threw it on the ground. Yawning he put his feet on the desk one more time. He leaned back and closed his eyes breathing loudly. |
Ross was scribbling away on his parchment takeing down as many notes as he could. He listened clearly to the teachers disscussions and her answers to his fellow students questions. He raised his hand, "Professor Does St Mungos deal with muggles who have been hurt in a magical way?" |
Jade copied down the notes from the board, trying to ignore the senseless noise the Slytherin boy was making. |
Vishu copied down what was on the board and looked up when she heard the Slytherin boy ask the question. She turned to the Professor to hear her answer. |
Serena wrote down her notes, then raised her hand. "Professor, I have heard of muggles being treated at St. Mungo's before. If my memory serves me right, they have even reattached or regrown fingers on muggles that were unlucky enough to come into contact with muggle artifacts that were 'magically' enchanted to attack any muggle who handled them. Of course, they had to adjust their memories after they were treated to forget the incident, as well as their treatment at St. Mungo's." |
The class continued as it was, but the boy from before seemly was up to only represent some kind of parody of the Slytherin House. With an irritated from at the boy's actions, Nadia raised her hand again and addressed the professor, "Professor Virohsa, may I assist you if you decide to remove my house mate Dave from class?" she offered, her eyes turning again to glare at the boy as she finished. |
::Lauren tried to ignore Nadia's comment even though she knew Dave was being a pain. She was just trying to ignore everything in the class room except the teacher. :: |
Ross sits and listens to his fellow peers but awaits the Professors Answer to his question. he twiddles his quill in his fingers to amuse himself. |
Martha writes down the notes that appear on the board and waits patiently for the Professor to continue. |
Professor Virohsa was about to take more points away from Slytherin when Nadia spoke. "Very well, dear. You are excused. Please take him out of my classroom!", she said severely. She waited for them to leave to continue the lesson. |
Nadia nodded as a type of bow and then stood, walking over to the boy and gesturing and half dragging the guy outside. Mind, she would prefer not using force since, sure thing, the guy could walk alone without aid. She only took him by the arm to escort him only to make her way quickly outside and just to make sure he wasn't going anywhere. Finally they were out of the room, closing the door behind. |
Erica looked down at her parchment and copied down the outline on the blackboard. She had noticed the Slytherin boy making all the trouble and was inwardly torn between cheering him on and wishing he would shut up. She decided on the latter, realizing that nothing would get done while interruptions were present. She waited for the professor to continue on with the lesson. |
:: Lauren felt her cheeks flush with imbarrasment as Nadia drug Dave out of the room. She looked at the board and waited for the teacher to answer her question.:: |
Martha doodles on her parchment, annoyed with the interruption that Dave had caused. Sighing quietly, she waits for the situation to sort itself out. |
Laurasia rubbed her temples in an effort to stop the headache that was building in her head. She simply could not understand what was wrong with some students. Was it so hard to attend class & actually learn something? Wasn't that what attending the school was for? She couldn't believe that he had just lost the house 10 points by deliberately acting in such a manner. "Why is there always someone eager to make the rest of us Slytherins look bad?" she thought to herself. Her eyes lit up when she heard Nadia's request & the professors reply. "Thank you! Now we can continue." her mind was screaming. She wanted to hug Nadia right then & there. She decided that she would have to thank the older Slytherin in some way back at the Common Room later on. |
Professor Virohsa's expression changed slightly now that the boy was out. "Now, class. Let's continue. To answer your questions, no there is no secret chamber. And yes, St. Mungo's treats muggles who have been attacked or have suffered from magical injuries. I assume there are no other questions, so I will continue..", she gave the class a small smile. "The Ministry of Magic. Who can tell me about it?", she asked curiously. |
Martha raises her hand and says, "The Ministry of Magic is the governing body of the magical community of Britain, succeeding the earlier Wizards' Council. It is implied that other countries have their own Ministries of Magic. The job of the Minister for Magic seems to include executive, legislative and judicial functions. The Ministry has seven departments and many minor offices, to deal with different aspects of the wizarding world. The British Ministry of Magic is based in an underground location beneath London. How - or whether - the Ministry of Magic reports to the Prime Minister is unknown, although he is apparently aware of its existence." Martha puts her hand down and waits for others to respond. |
Bam slipped into the room as quietly as possible so as to not disturb Professor Virohsa. He realized they were talking about the Ministry of Magic and thought of what he knew of it and he put his hand in the air. "The Ministry of Magic is also where Wizengamot trials are held. However the Wizengamot is only for huge cases such as Unforgivable Curses: Avada Kedavara, Imperious Curse, or the Crucio curse. Just as Martha said, the Ministry of Magic is "led" by the Minister of Magic and I've read that a few past Ministers haven't been very reliable." Bam said, excited for his first lesson. Now, back to notes! He looked around. I thought there would be more students answering..... Bam thought. |
Nadia returned to the classroom, closing the door behind. Taking her previous spot, silently sat back at the desk. She didn't know what was being dicussed right now so she only waited until the professor would address the class again with a new question. |
Olivia was sitting by Nadia and just sat there scribbling on her paper as everyone else took down notes. She really loved school so decided to listen VERY attentively. |
jean raises her hand and answeres a question for the first time "The Ministry of Magic is located somewhere just below the surface of downtown London. To get to the Ministry, you must head for an old shabby telephone booth down in a small graffiti filled alleyway. Once you get inside the booth, pick up the receiver, hold it above your head, and dial 6 - 2 - 4 - 4 - 2. After this you will get the receptionist. She first tells you to state your name and business. Then after you tell that, you will get small silver badges that tell your name and business to get into the Ministry. You are then told, if you are a visitor, to submit to a search and present your wand for registration at the security desk, which is the at the far end of the Atrium. Then the telephone booth goes down like an elevator to the Atrium. The Atrium is a very long and splendid hall with a highly polished, dark wood floor." |
not quiet sure how to answer the question she just took notes. |
Llewellyn raised his hand, "The Ministry of Magic is responsible for maintaining order wihtin the British magical community. It doesn't appear to have all of the same powers as the companion non-wizarding government, which is logical when a person considers the relative size of the wizarding community to the surrounding non-wizarding community." |
Bam didn't know what else to say. Why does everyone say Prof. Virohsa is snappish? She's nice! Whats up with that?! Bam thought. Bam just sat there till Prof. Virohsa returned. |
Ross flipped his quill round to face his parchment and started taking notes on the Ministy of Magic! He listened carefully to the others in the class and took down notes on what they were saying. |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very good! Oh my, you are certainly well-informed for students", she said with a small smile. "4 pts for Martha, 3 for Llew, Jean, and Bam... And Bam, a word of caution. Do not be late again. If it wasn't because you made sure you were not interrupting class I would have taken 10 pts from Slytherin again", she warned him. "Now, who can tell me of different departments that work within the Ministry of Magic? Perhaps some of your parents work there", she said with a smile. |
Sarah raised her hand, "The Ministy has many departments, the Department of Mysteries is on Level 9. Department of Magical Games and Sports including the British and Irish Quidditch Headquarters, Official Gobstones Club, and Ludicrous Patents Office is on Level 7. Level Six is the Department of Magical Transport includes the Floo Network Authority, Broom Regulatory Control, Portkey Office, and Apparation Test Center. There is also the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures on level 4, level 3 is the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes and on Level 2 there is Department of Magical Law Enforcement which contains the Auror HQ." |
:: Lauren wrote down the notes as fast as her hand would go.:: |
Ross raised his hand. "the wizards and witches who work the Department of Mysteries are commonly known as the unspeakables! The department of mysteries is a round room with lots of doors and spinns round to confuse who ever enters it" Ross also scribbled down more notes. |
Professor Virohsa smiled pleased as Sarah gave her answer. "Very well! 5 pts for Sarah", she exclaimed. She continued to listen to suggestions... and then stopped as Ross spoke. "Dear child, I find it.. interesting as well as dangerous that a young student like yourself knows about the Unspeakables", she watched Ross carefully. ".. Regardless, we shall continue our lesson. As you may know, the Ministry of Magic works closely with St. Mungo's. How may this relate to Herbology?", she gave the class a small grin. |
Jaren raised his hand. "Many different kinds of magical plants are used in healing, so a Healer would need sufficient knowledge in Herbology in order to decide which plants should be used in a certain situation to speed recovery of a patient." |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "Well, many Healers at St. Mungo's use many of the plants that you discuss to us in Herbology." |
Olivia raised her to answer as well, "I believe for students it's also a required course to be able to become a Healer." |
jean raised her hand "i think its also becase alot of plants are venemous and not only do they heal they can hurt.. the healers need to know how to treat the affects of dangerouse plants" |
Llewellyn raised his hand, "Many plants, like potions, are closely regulated by the ministry of magic due to their effects on the human body. While many plants have beneficial magical properties they also have potentially harmful properties. As such, St. Mungo's staff probably needs to work closely with the ministry so they may be able to use said plants while being relatively unhindered by beurocracy." Llewellyn thought for a moment, then added before another student raised their hand, "As a side note Professor, it is interesting how the ministry closely regulates such plants, while the non-wizarding governments of most nations have very few laws regulating the sale or possession of potentially deadly plants. This is an instance where ministry of magic regulations and interventions work more effectivley and beneficiently than their non-wizarding counterparts." |
Bam heard all the answers he thought of so he just wrote... and wrote.... and wrote. "Sorry about being late Professor Virohsa." Bam said sincerely. |
"the healers need the medicine from the plants to help heal there patients so the can recuperate" said Liam |
Professor Virohsa nodded as she heard the answers. "Yes, very well", she said pleased. "2 pts shall be awarded to Jaren, Jamie, Olivia, and Jean. 4 pts shall be awarded to Llew for connecting all of these previous statements to the Ministry." Then turning to Bam, she said in a slightly irritated mood, "Do not interrupt class! If you are sorry you can apologize in writing or at the end of the class. For your interruption I shall take 5 pts from Slytherin", she narrowed her eyes. "Good! Now that we are aware of such connection, I want you to read pages 89 to 120 regarding researching poisoneous plants chemicals. Specifically, I want you to focus on the chemicals of the following plant", she nodded. "Can anyone recognize it?" Quote:
|
~ Nichole raised her hand. " Is it a sort of weed?"~ |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "No, dear.. It is not a weed. It is a plant. It has flowers", she pointed at the new closeups in the blackboard. Quote:
|
Cherry raises her hand. "Is the second one a trumpet vine, also known as a trumpet creeper, Professor?" |
Llewellyn looked up from his book and raised his hand, "Is it Larkspur Professor? Whose scientific classification is Delphinium. It can casue respiratory problems as well as vomitting. It can be cultivated for numerous herbal remedies, and was once believed to possess the ability to keep witches from invading the stables of farmers and merchants in Eastern Europe." |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. Waving her wand, a new blackboard appeared. "No dear, this is what the trumpet vine looks like", she said as she waited for other students to give the correct answer. Quote:
|
Sarah looked at the pictures and then raised her hand, "Is it a Solanum carolinense?" She guessed, "A horse nettle?" |
Cherry decides to try again. "Could it be a Bittersweet Nightsade, Professor? Or perhaps it could be a Cardinal Flower?" |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "Larkspurs Poisoning or Green Cestrum." |
"Are those Poppys?" Xavier asks completely confused. He knew he was wrong but he might as well guess. |
Rosa thought recognised the flower. she knew something that looked like it and it was poisonous... she raised her hand 'could it be a linaria?' she asked 'erm.. a toadflax?' |
Ashley huffed to herself and rested her elbow on the table and her head in her hand studying the pictures, trying to figure out what they could be. "Herbology is definately not my forte," she said to herself as she followed her classmates around the room giving possible answers. |
