Lesson #2: Understanding Plants - An inside look at Beautiful and safe plants Professor Virohsa opened the door for the upcoming lesson. The tray that was following her with the plants for the lesson situated themselves in their usual corner. After having opened the door, Professor Virohsa stepped out and went to her office to gather the rest of the materials. ooc- Class won't start for about another hour and a half. So about 7:30 CT |
Following the professor outside, Nadia found a seat to the left area of the classroom and waited. She had fogotten to take her gloves off so she did now, pocketing back inside her bag. For some reason, something flare inside her to be in the place and felt as if back to first year. In this case it could come in handy. This was not known territory any more, and it didn't feel like it. Sighing, Nadia stood there waiting for class to start and observing the plants. Entering the classroom next to her were Mithos and Annie. |
Llewellyn stepped into the classroom and waited there patiently for class to begin. He looked over at the other students already in the classroom and let out a soft sigh. |
Sarah walked into the greenhouse and sat in the seat she had sat in in the last lesson. She looked around the room and her eyes fell on the tray of plants in the corner of the room, then she looked at the other students in the classroom and turned and stared at the front of the room, tapping her fingers lightly on the desk. |
Lee walked into the herbology gtreenhouse for the second time this term, he hoped he wouldn't be walking out with a detention this time. |
Jamie walked into the classroom sitting down at a desk and looked extremely bored. |
Professor Virohsa entered the classroom noiselessly. She was carrying several pouches, which she placed on the tray at the right (note: the plants at are the tray in the left). Professor Virohsa gave Lee a stern look and nodded. Surely, Professor Borr got through him. And perhaps, this class would be shout-free. After placing the pouches in the right tray, Professor Virohsa walked towards the middle of the room from which she could see all of the students. "Good afternoon class!", she said in a loud and cold tone. |
Nadia gave a small nod at the professor's entrance, having a small hesistation about if she should raise her hand before responding, "Good afternoon professor," at unison and echoing everyone else. |
Llewellyn kept his mouth closed, and closed his eyes tightly hoping that for the first time, Hufflepuff would make it through a class without one of their own getting into trouble. He cautiously opened one of his eyes and looked at Lee, just to make sure everythign was under control. |
Jamie sighed silently and she looked at the Professor with a cold glare not wanting the last lesson to be a following one to this one, and didn't want it to be mentioned. |
Professor Virohsa nodded as the children spoke in unison. "Very well. Today, we shall start with a quick review of the rules. I've noticed that some of you seem to have a distaste.. or shall I say, bad memory, for the rules", she stated as she looked around. "There are three very important rules that shall be followed with utmost importance above all others inside this classroom. Anyone care to volunteer and state which three rules these are?" |
Mithos looked at the Professor and forced a smile. He was tired, second year was way harder than first year. "Good afternoon... Professor.." He sighed a couple of times before he took out his quill, parchment, ink, and his book. |
Sarah raised her hand, "To be respectful to the Ministry, the Professors and other students?" Sarah asked, feeling unsure about her answer. |
Llewellyn raised his hand, and answered attentively, "Professors and school staff are to be shown the respect of their station, whatever individuals may think of them." This last part he seemed to direct towards his rather willfull fellow Hufflepuffs in the room. |
Professor Virohsa's neutral expression slightly changed to a grin. "Very well, Sarah! 3 pts for Hufflepuff. Now, there are two more. Does anyone know?", she asked as looked at all the students attentively. |
Mithos raised his hand "No touching the plants..." He could remember last class "No matter how 'alive' they look." He said smiling. |
Nadia raised her hand, "We must raise our hands before we can speak, otherwise we would be speaking out of turn." |
Professor Virohsa glanced over to Mithos as he spoke. As she heard the words come out of his mouth, a small smirk appeared on her face. "No dear, that is called common sense", she stated as matter of factly. She looked at the other students, hoping that they would guess accurately the two other rules. |
Jamie raised her hand and spoke, "No swering." she thought of something different, but that's all that she could come up with at the moment. She thought to herself, Who would swear in the presence of a Professor, how ridiculus! |

"We must not arrive late," Nadia said, raising her hand again. "I'm guesing that's the third rule." |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "Oh dear.. It is not swearing and it is not arriving late. However, if you follow the third rule, you will have no excuse to come unprepared or late", she frowned. "Does anyone else want to guess before I give you a hint?", she asked cordially. |
Arkee raised her hand. "First rule of Herbology Class, is we don't talk about - no wait, that was the movie Fight Club... Sorry professor, I was confused." |
Frowning at the clue given, Nadia raised her hand again hesistantly, "Follow the school given rules and code of conduct?" |
Jamie raised her and and said, "Do not come with parchment or your homework." |
"Is the third rule to follow the school rules?" Sarah asked trying not to laugh at Arkee's answer. |
Professor Virohsa sort of nodded as she thought about what Nadia and Sarah had said. "Well, it is one of the rules that has been decreed by Headmistress Leiden, yes. I shall give you a hint. It affects your performance and development", she said sharply. |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "You MUST get 8 hours of sleep!" |
Mithos raised his hand "No Sweets..." |
"To have eight hours sleep?" Sarah guessed, frowning slightly. |
Llewellyn quickly looked down and bit his lips, doing his best not to laugh as the students began wildly calling out answers. Becoming bored with the introduciton, he began doodling detailed drawings of various plants. |
Professor Virohsa nodded. "Very good Jamie! Hufflepuff receives 2 pts", she nodded. After all, she had given them a hint. Turning to the class, she frowned, "Well? Why aren't you writing this!?". As she glared at the students, who were hopefully now scribbling in their parchments, she continued. "For today's class and our next classes, you can work on pairs or individually. I am aware that some of you (glances at Mithos and Lee) require more help than the rest.", she explained. "Any questions about the rules, before we proceed?", she asked quickly. |
Jamie smiled at the talk that she got 2 points for her house because they were so low. She looked around for a partner, but then she just took some noted on the 3 classroom rules. |
Mithos was tired he wanted to get out of this class and Owl his friend and tell her how Hogwarts was going. He really missed her, now he would have to partner up with these people that he didn't even know. |
Nadia titled her head, slightly confused about where the class was heading. She wrote down the rules as given and waited for further instructions. Her eyes rested on the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff boys who were mentioned. She wondered, well, she wasn't quite sure what to think to be quite honest. The Ravenclaw boy Mithos looked dreadful. |
After the class seemed to be done writing these upmost important rules, Professor Virohsa continued. "Before we begin our lesson, I have two announcements to make regarding extra credit. Please pay close attention, because I will not repeat them. After I post the homework, the first three students to send me an OWL will be placed as the Official Plant Caretakers for the upcoming lesson. The second announcement is that once these three students have been selected, a couple of you (depending on how many OWLS I get), will become the Official Greenhouse Caretakers", she said slowly. "What this means is that all extra credit shall be done after the class has adjourned and the homework has been posted. Any questions regarding these two announcements?", she asked as she shot a glance towards the sleepy Mithos. |
Mithos wrote down what was said in class and looked around and caught a sight of Nadia looking at him. At least it's not Gany. He thought to himself, and smiling at Nadia. His head felt heavy... He just wanted to rest it... |
As Professor Virohsa kept a close watch on the boy, she noticed his head fall to the table. With a small smirk, she walked over to the table and snapped really close to his ear, "Wake up, boy!!". She crossed her arms as she stated coldly, "It seems like someone has been neglecting his sleep..." |
"Professor," said Arkee, raising her hand slowly, "Do you mean that we have to send you and owl regarding these positions, or that we will be chosen when we hand in our homework?" |
Professor Virohsa looked at the Hufflepuff girl. "It means that after I post the homework, you will send me an OWL stating that you wish you fulfill one of these extra credit roles", she explained. |
Llewellyn gave a sigh, and added the finishing touches to his drawing. He wondered why these students had such a difficult time following directions. At least the Ravenclaw boy was just sleepy... He thought to himself. |
Mithos jumped at the yell of the Professor in his ear. He sat up straight, and tried not to fall asleep again. His head was hurting even more now that the Professor yelled right in his ear, how rude that was. |
ooc: Pss - Arkee is a girl :) Nadia heard to yet another rule of sorts - because, yes, it was a rule, and fought the ever-pounding need to sigh out loud. She needed to focus on work, on the real thing. Basic of herbology, basics... she just needed to concentrate and not let her nerves take her. Dear, not even after the attacks, the deaths and the lost of the professors Nadia had felt this stressed. She met eyes with the depressed-looking boy raising her eyebrows slightly, couldn't even smile or something when the professor called on him - and that was a way to put it. Nadia was half way to raise her hand, but suddenly her mind was blank and she dropped it back to the table. |
Walking back to the center of the room, Professor Virohsa smiled. "Very well. Now that we are all wide awake, we can continue". As she finished her sentence, the two usual blackboards that were floating in the air appeared. This time, they had a very bright picture of the plant that was located in the tray at the left side of the classroom. "Does anyone know what this type of plant is called?", she asked the class. Quote:
|
Amaris looked up and smiled. She knew it was a flower but that was as far as her knowledge went. She sighed and grinned at the Professor shaking her head slightly. |
Professor Virohsa looked about the room. Everyone seemed either awestruck or they had not being reading about beautiful and safe plants. Quirking her eyebrow, she decided to up the odds. "I will award 25 pts to the student who accurately identifies this type of plant", she stated. "And I will leave you with a hint: It is a blue plant", she smiled. ooc- I shall leave this open. I will return tomorrow afternoon.... sooo.. think it over ;) |
Llewellyn raised his hand, and decided to hazard a guess. There weren't that many blue colored flowers, so at least he had a chance of probability. "Professor, is it a type of Hyacinth hybrid?" He asked, raising his hand. |
Laurasia raised her hand in the back of the room. "It seems to be a type of snapdragon, professor. I've never seen any blue ones before though, so I could be mistaken." |
Professor Virohsa smiled. "No, its not a Hyacinth hybrid or a Snapdragon, dears. But it does have something in common with the Hyacinth hybrid", she grinned. |
Nadia stared at the blackboard pensively and narrowing her eyes on concentration. She didn't thought she had ever seen those type of flowers before. Daisy, no... Lily, no... Lovage, no... Privet? Raising her hand, "Violet, professor?" |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "Not a violet, child. I'm afriad I have already given you three hints. Think about them, it will come to you", she nodded. Quote:
|
Mithos raised his hand "Blue Vervain or Verbena hastata...." |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "No, that is not it. Please look at the pictures more closely", she smiled. |
Selena just watched....this was definitely not her subject. |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "Eichhornia crassipes" |
Laurasia raised her hand once again. "Professor could it be an Eichhornia crassipes, or water hyacinth?" |
Laurasia looked at the Hufflepuff student & giggled slightly, as it seems that the reached them same conclusion at once. |
"Not the Hyacinth Hybrid Blue Ice, then," raising her hand again, "Could it be the Bluebell? Or Orchids?" She crossed out the Forget-Me-Not's since there was no yellow core in the picture. Nadia lowered her hand only to take notes, trying to cross down those which shouldn't be it. |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "Allright, I will give you more hints.. and make one of the previous hints more specific", she nodded. Quote:
|
Llewellyn looked at the board and groaned, dropping his head on the desk before him. She must be a very bitter individual... He thought to himself, realizing the number of possible plants that fit her description. |
Jamie raised her hand and asked, "A Blue Hybrid?" |
Selena stared blankly. She didn't have a clue. |
Laurasia once again raised her hand, beginning to run out of options in her head. "Could it be wood hyacinth, professor?" She asked, knowing the wood hyacinth was usual a darker shade of blue. What the heck, is what worth a guess she thought. |
Professor Virohsa tapped her fingers on her desk. This was completely unforgivable! These children had no idea what this plant was. She sighed and waited once more, before giving another hint. She waved her wand with exasperation at the students' inability to figure it out, and the blackboard changed once more. Quote:
|
Mithos raised his hand "Er.... Blue Nikko..." |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "A Petunia, or later named the Grandiflora Pentunia!" |
Llewellyn stared in disbelief at Professor Virohsa. What does she want from us? 'Hold on a second Professor, let me go memorize the entire taxonomic list of all possible plants, be back in a jiff.' He thought to himself with a silent laugh. |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. "Of course it looks blue and it is a hybrid, child! It says so in the hints... And no, it is not a Nikko", she answered. "Please try again with the seven hints, I have provided for you...", she said with a hint of hopelessness. |

|
Selena tried to hide the smile that was coming over her face. "Clearly we don't know." Selena said to herself as she watched the teacher spaz. |
Ashlie bit her lip, studying the hints. She was anything but good with plants. Perhaps she should have read up more on them? |
Laurasia raised her hand yet again. "Professor is it Amsonia hubrichtii, or Bluestar?" |
Professor Virohsa frowned. Realizing that perhaps these children had no idea, she decided to say, "It is a FOUR words and it is named after its color", she said slowly as she crossed her arms. Surely, now they will be able to correctly guess the name. "Open your books! 25 pts to the first one who accurately names it", she nodded. ooc- oops, forgot to add the name of the plant hehe :shifty: |
Ashlie shook her head, quite uncertain. Three letters long? |
"Blu?" |
Laurasia slowly raised her hand. "Sky?" she asked unsure of herself. |
Professor Virohsa shook her head. The blackboard now also showed the following, Quote:
|
"I'm sure its not an iris..." Ashlie muttered to herself |
Jamie raised her hand and asked, "Skye?" |
So it had to come to this. Pressing her lip, so that her mouth was but a thin line, she looked at the students. "Very well... The third word is a synonym for... a cove, a pool, a lake", she muttured slowly. |
Mithos raised his hand "Sky Blue Laguna Lobelia." |
Professor Virohsa looked almost excited when Mithos uttered his answer. But alas, it was not what she had expected. "What's the other term for Laguna.. in english?", she asked as cordially as she could manage. She certainly had not expected this part of the class to take so long. |
"Sky Blue Pond?" Nadia said raising her hand. |
Professor Virohsa shook her head, "What is another word for a pond, laguna, lake, cove?". She waited. Surely the answer would come soon.. and then... the points will be handed out. |
Laurasia raised her hand. "Sky Blue Lagoon Lobelia." |
Jamie raised her hand and said, "Sky Blue Lagoon Lobelia." |
Professor Virohsa smiled at the Slytherin student, who spoke first. "Well, you have the third word right, so I will award you 10 pts", she nodded. "But it is not a Lobelia, dear". Quote:
|
Jamie raised her hand and said, "Sky Blue Lagoon Nemesia" |
Mithos hand was up again when he said "Sky Blue Lagoon Nemesia." |
Laurasia raised her hand again. "Sky blue lagoon nemesia?" |
Oh, of course. Lagoon. Nadia had no luck with guessing games, that was that. Much less with guessing games in different languages than her own. Blame it to most her education in plants being muggle and in Spanish. Nevermind that now, the name have been already said. Nadia took note of the name, the different elements, already glad it was over, that part of the lesson, as well. Meanwhile, most of the characteristics of this plant seemed to have been named on the guessing. |
Martha thought about all the clues and the discussion and an idea popped in her head. She remembered reading about a flower that matched the clues the professor had given them. Hesitantly raising her hand she says, "I believe its the Nemesia Sky Blue Lagoon, 'Nemesia hybrids', exhibits beautiful sky blue flowers. These sweet scented blooms fill the air with their fragrant aroma when the sun hits the flowers. Proven Selections introduces Sky Blue Lagoon, with it's blue flowers, to join the Nemesia line of old favorites. The Sky Blue Lagoon keeps blooming from early spring to late fall. They perform best in cool gardens or in partial shade in hot areas. The compact plants produce and abundance of showy flowers all summer long. For zones 8-11, this plant can also be a perennial." |
Professor Virohsa smiled satisfied. The two students had raised their hands and spoken at the same time (look at your times lol). "Very well! Good job! It was about time, too! I will grant 25 pts to Hufflepuff for getting the answer... and 10 pts to Ravenclaw for being so close and answering at the same time", she smiled. "However, you did not raise your hand, and I will take away 5 of those 25 pts, dear". Looking back at the class, she smiled. "Yes, it is a Sky Blue Lagoon Nemesia. Good, I want you to open your books and read its short description. Be prepared, I will ask you questions abou tthe Nemesia plant" Quote:
And, this is a good time to stop. I will continue the next part tomorrow afternoon at about 5pm CT. |
Llewellyn frustratingly flipped through his herbology book. Where the heck are they getting this from?!!! He shouted in his head. He narrowed his eyes at Virohsa, and decided that indeed he did not like her. With a resigned sigh he went about drawing more pictures of plants, wondering what any of this had to do with magical plants. |
If you weren't looking for this exact name, your chances of getting it right were very slim. Sky Blue Lagoon Nemesia... Nadia didn't think she had ever heard of that one, and didn't get to read in her book about it especifically. Nadia took the chance to review some from her book as the class settled down and continued. |
Being that it was her first year, Tania found her second Herbology lesson to be a bit tough. She didn't know much about plants and took up most of her time writing notes so she didn't find the plant in her textbook fast enough. She continued to take notes and wondered what the rest of the lesson would be like. |
Diana just mentally kicked herself for not knowing the answer to the flower. No matter, she would pounce on the next opportunity to answer the next time a question is asked to the students. She noted down the name and its description. |
Birdy watched the teacher avidly as she flipped through her own book to the index and searched 'Nemesia Sky Blue Lagoon'. After copying down the blurb the professor wrote, she began making additional notes out of her textbook. After she finished, she began drawing a tiny snitch on the edge of her paper. |
Lauren turned to the page in her book and quickly copied down what she read. "Very interesting" She thought to herself. |
Lee sat with his head on his hands bored he raised his hand "Professor why do plants ahve stupid names? i mean that plant could eassily be called the Chagosly or soemthing not four million words long?" Lee asked |
