You walk in to the classroom that was just added after last term. It’s at the end of the hall past the DADA class. Upon entering you notice a long rack to your left with 20 school brooms all hanging neatly on hooks. Above each broom is a set of goggles and gloves. The are no desks in this class, but 20 chairs neatly stacked against the opposite wall by a door that leads out into the courtyard.

This class will be your meeting and instruction area and then class will proceed to the courtyard. You will be learning the basics of flying on a broom. For those of you already flying brooms (no matter what brand) this class is not for you. Therefore, there will be no talk in class about which famous broom you received over holiday or how you can already fly loops on you Firebolt, if you can, you don’t need to be here. Please be on time, we have lots to learn and it takes a bit of trying to get to be any good at flying.

Jen walked into the classroom as Professor Prewett said "I think I'll wait until a few more students arrive before starting." She took a seat and looked around the room. She didn't recognize anyone, so she began copying the notes written on the board.

Tao moved around uncertaintly. She was a bit full from eating all the food from earlier, but she was eager to take the flying lessons, and she waited patiently for class to finally begin.

Marybeth entered the classroom and saw a girl she recognized from some other classes. She sat near the girl and paid attention to the professor, impatient for class to start.

Tao noticed someone sit down next to her. She turned to see a Slytherin girl that she had seen in a few of her other classes and smiled. She wanted to say how exciting this all seemed, but she didn't want to get into trouble so she waited eagerly for the professor to begin.

Erica walked in and surveyed the class. She was most excited about finally learning how to fly, this being her first flying lesson. She saw Professor Prewett and smiled. She only too well remembered their conversation and rather liked him better because of it. She took a seat near the front of the class and waited to begin.

Marybeth turned to the Ravenclaw first-year next her, "Hi...I'm Marybeth," she said, since she figured the professor wouldn't start for a few minutes,"Are you looking forward to Flying Classes?"

"Okay," the Professor started. I would like to welcome you to Flying Lessons. My name is Professor Prewett. For those of you have haven't read anything on me, I have been registered as an expert Flying Instructor and Maker of FIne Handcrafted Brooms. I have been certified by the Ministry to teach you beginning lessons in the basics of Flying." He pointed to the various certificates surrounding the room.

Jaren looked up from inspecting the school broom in his hands and listened to the Professor speak, eyes glancing briefly on a few of the certificates on the wall.

"Erm," Arkee said unsurely, "Are those brooms safe? What happens if we fall? Do we have to sign some sort of liability form in case of injury or death?"

Nadia looked at the certificates the professor was gesturing, then sighed. At this point sigh and breath were the same thing with her. And it looked like she was having troubles remembering to breath. But other than her rather random thoughts, Nadia stared at the broom over her desk and didn't say nothing. Just waited for the class to start, every now and then blinking as if trying to kick her to be awake for class.

Professor Prewett smiled at some of the questions he was getting from the newer students. "I can assure you that the Ministry has taken every precaution to make sure that while learning how to fly, you are kept safe. We will not actually begin Flying today however, but I need to get you familiar with some of the terms associated with flying.

He tapped his wand against the blackboard and a young wizard seated on a broom appeared. There were three lines pointing to three positions around him with blank spaces. "Who here can tell me the three terms that involve the elements of flight?"

Erica glanced around at the certificates and brooms that lined the wall. They were beautiful. She honestly couldn't wait to grab a broom and just start zooming around already. Instead, she stayed in her seat and waited for Professor Prewett to continue.

Nadia's lip corner went side-ways, not exactly sad but more like the usual

. She figured she better not respond and let the others have a try. After all, she would be cheating. She had came to this class last term and pretty much knew the coming answers in advance. She just kept quiet and watched, thinking of popping in later.

Marybeth was slightly confused. The three terms in the whoidity-whaty? She thought. This sounds like a bunch of cadswollop to me...Isn't flying just flying? Who needs this "theory" stuff, anyway?

Prof. Prewett looked around appreciating the fact that several of the returning students, whom he's known to have the answers, didn't reveal them. "Well some of you may be wondering why this is important so I'll go ahead and explain." He tapped his wand on the board again and the three blank lines were filled in now.
Flying is not a natural things for humans, magical or otherwise. If it were, say like if we were owls, then flying would be as natural as walking, or breathing. But for wizards to fly, it's more compicated then just hopping onto an old broom, say like this one," he grabbed an old school broom that was leaning on his desk." I would suspect that many of you have riden a broom already but aren't very good at it. Balance and control problems. Well that's where these terms come in." He pointed to the first one.
PITCH "Pitch is the angle at which you hold the handle of the broom. IF you were to pull back on the handle, you would increase the pitch and therefore begin to rise in the air. Let the handle fall or decrease the Pitch, and you will descend."

Nadia had heard this before but still took notes again, just in case and for some studing of it herself. She could link it to her Charms Homework assigment, she razoned.

Prewett listened to the student answer, he didn't want to dweel on the fact that she was his realative. "Well actually thos are good guesses but no. The other two are YAWLl and ROLL" After tapping his wand again, those lines were filled in completing the picture.
"YAWL is the control of which way your broom is pointing," he conitnued, watching the students taking notes. "You should use a combination of your hips and your arms to direct you broom's tip in the direction you want to travel. This gets really important when flying in a strong wind, you will have to compensate for the wind blowing you off course by correcting slightly in to the direction the wind is blowing.
ROLL is probably the most important control since using too little roll will result in being thrown off your broom when making quick turns and using too much roll will cause to slip off the handle. In time, you will be able to [i]lean in]/i] to your turns just enough to keep you seated."
He looked up at the students, "now, any question on any of these terms?"

Jaren decided that he would have to take notes after all. Pulling a slip of parchment and a quill from his bag he began scribbling down what had just been said.

Erica continued to copy down notes as the professor continued speaking. When she was done, she reread them and had no questions. She waited for class to continue.
