Annie writes her name date on the top of her parchment, and waited for Professor Perry to start with his lesson. |
"Excellent," he watched the class prepare themselves for the experience. "Now, before we begin, how do you think you could prepare yourselves for an encounter with an unknown, possibly dangerous animal?" He eyed them expectantly. |
Jaren pondered this question with his hands clasped in front of his mouth, then removed them so he could reply coherently to the question. "Have at least three exit plans in case the creature turns out to be too dangerous to handle." |
Meghan raised her hand. "One way may be is to have an experianced adult who has handled these type of creatures in and around the area that you are working in." |
Serena raised her hand, "Personally, I would feel more comfortable if I had my wand in my hand, and a few jinxes, hexes, or defensive spells ready to use." |
Llewellyn thought to himself, then raised his hand and answered when called, "Have a tranquilizing draught?" |
"Yes, those are good suggestions," Perry nodded, "Althought, Serena... I'm not sure you're qualified to defend yourself in such a way, although I can see why you may believe that sort of thing necessary. No, I think that planned exits and an experienced adult are good answers. Five points to each of your houses. And you... how would you use a tranquilizing draught?" |
Erica grinned at Llew with his suggestion for a tranqulizer and subtlely nodded at him to show that she understood what he had mouthed to her earlier before getting back to her notes. |
Llewellyn looked at himself unexpectingly, "Er...Me? Sir? Well..First I would obtain it after first filling out the appropriate 1045P form at my local ministry office. Then, I would simply spread some on a heavy dart and throw it at the animal. Unless we're dealing with small animals. Then I believe a spray of the draught would be effective enough...Erm, that is if you do sir?" He said with a swallow. |
Jenna scribbled down all of the suggestions on her parchment. She pondered for a moment then raised her hand. "You should analyze the situation, win or lose, and back off slowly before finding help, Professor. Although I agree with Meghan, too." |
"Erm... yes. 10 points to your house for knowing the correct Ministry procedure as well as offering a mostly useful suggestion. It seems a bit risky, but it is at least well thought out. It is also necessary to back off if necessary, yes. Five points for Gryffindor." He nodded and turned back towards the desk. "So, we have taken the necessary precautions. Let's discuss these dark animals. What makes an animal dangerous?" |
Annie raised her hand, "Sir? It's general nature about things, I would think." She said in a nervous tone. |
Jenna raised her hand once more. "Anything the animal uses as a defense turns out to be harmful let alone protection to itself." |
"An animal is considered dangerous if it has the capability to injure, incapacitate or kill a human being." |
Llewellyn sank into his chair, rather embarrassed and pretended to write more notes. |
"Yes, alright... so we can generally acknowledge that a dark animal is one that hurts or maims in some way, correct? Excellent, excellent. Now... steel yourselves, students. The animal I'm about to reveal is quite harmful in several ways, none of which are pleasent." |
Annie finished taking notes on what was just said, then braced herself as Professor Perry was about to uncover the cage. She was so curious, it hurt. |
Jenna smirked slightly. This is what she had been waiting for. Her hand tightened around her wand, more out of anticipation then fear. |
Meghan rubbed her hands together excited about the creature. She put her quill and parchment aside and gripped her wand. |
Llewellyn's non-wizarding mind created an odd image of a giant blob with antlers, tusks, a spiked tail, flames breathing from its 'nostrils', and a rather disgusting noxious scent reminiscent of his grandmother's scones. He proceeded to then imagine the number of ways the creature would hurt students. He wondered why the professor was showing them this, and crouched somehow lower in his seat. |
Erica couldn't help but be just a tad more cautious. She didn't know what was in that cage and she wasn't going to take any foolish chances and underestimate it. She tensed up and got ready to pull out her wand if necessary. |
Perry whipped the cloth from the cage, revealing a medium sized black creature that was rather rodent-like. It had a long nose and it snuffled. Perry tapped his wand against the cage before turning to the students. "Who knows what this is?" |
Jenna raised her hand. "I believe that's a niffler, Professor." She said. She couldn't help but wonder why Professor McAiken had chosen this animal. She had read about them. "Don't they dig up shiny objects? No offense, Professor, but how are they 'very dangerous'?" |
Annie raised her hand, but the Gryffindor girl got to it before she did, so she put her arm back down, and waited for the Professor to go on. |
Llewellyn raised his hand quickly, At last! Something I know! He thought. When called, he said proudly, "A niffler, sir?" |
