| | Flying Lesson One, Classroom You walk in to the classroom that was just added after last term. It’s at the end of the hall past the DADA class. Upon entering you notice a long rack to your left with 20 school brooms all hanging neatly on hooks. Above each broom is a set of goggles and gloves. The are no desks in this class, but 20 chairs neatly stacked against the opposite wall by a door that leads out into the courtyard. This class will be your meeting and instruction area and then class will proceed to the courtyard. You will be learning the basics of flying on a broom. For those of you already flying brooms (no matter what brand) this class is not for you. Therefore, there will be no talk in class about which famous broom you received over holiday or how you can already fly loops on you Firebolt, if you can, you don’t need to be here. Please be on time, we have lots to learn and it takes a bit of trying to get to be any good at flying. |

| Professor Prewett unlocks the door tohis class and walks in. He post a notice on the blackboard that reads, "Please take a seat and open your notebooks, the class will begin soon. I will not allow any chit chat from students and do not want to hear students announcing that they are sorry for being late. I will deduct house points for each. If you do happen to arrive late, just red what has transpired and interact as if you've been here all the time. Also please note one more time, this class is for beginning students only!! I don't want to hear about how well you fly, that you're on the school team, that you got the newest best broom the whole wide world over break. I realize that the previous Flying Instructor was a bit lax in his teaching. In fact, from what I can see, the only flying he did was due to the fact that he was a ghost!
So please be seated and I will begin once enough students have arrived....." The Professor stood back and admired the note, smiled and turned to go tohis office to get his notes before returning to class.

Megan walked in and chose a seat. She got out her note book, quill and ink. She couldn't wait to ride a broom!

Nadia listened to the professor's words with a kint of disappointment, seeing she had nothing to do being a 4th year. She stood and reached to pick up her stuuf when, as if feelign tired, she slumped back on her chair. She would stay, she decided, to hear some theory and just watch. She had nothing better to do anyway and felt like having some distraction... Besides, maybe the professor would put her to use, as in, supervising students or something.

| The professor looks around at the mostly empty room and says, "well let's get started, as the other arrive they can just catch up." He pulls down a chart that was hanging on the black board. It's a picture of a broom.
"Now, who can tell me one specific part of a broom?"

"Yes, Megan, you are correct again, the end of the broom with the twigs on it is called the brush." He pulls another strip of paper covering the word BRUSH "And take five more points for Ravenclaw.
"Now, sometimes, broom makers distinguish a differnence between the handle and the shaft, but it can become a bit confusing so well just use handle to cover the entire area that's not the brush."
Professor Prewett looks around at the various brooms hanging in his classroom, "can anyone name a type of twigs used to make brooms?"

"once again, Megan, you are correct, the earliest flying brroms made by wizards, were made using twigs from the Hazel tree. In fact one of the early brooms that remains on dispay in the Museum of Quidditch in London, shows a very crude version of a broom with hazel twigs bound to one end. Take five more points for Ravenclaw. Does anyone know any other substances used to make the brush end of a broom?"

Take five points for Hufflepuff for that answer."

Serena was sitting with Nadia near the back observing class because of the notice on the board. "I hope I can learn something too. I at least want to see how Professor Prewett teaches flying. You can never know enough."
She enjoyed watching the eager new students. They remindeded her of what it was like for her to start out and she couldn't help but smile.
