Rosie sits down in one of the empty seats and waits for the lesson to begin. She takes out her wand and some parchment, and excitedly waits.

*cara realized that this was her first lesson and that she had been interacting with the anyone from another house since last year she smiled at all the new faces as she took out her supplies*

Hannah walked in to the class, and sat down in back rw, and got out her wand, quills, and parchment.

While waiting for teh class to start, Nadia took her wuill and some parchment to write some ideas that she had in her head. Her eyes fell on a figure on the room, then another, a frown deepening in her features. He was almost looking mad for some reason, then again she just adopted, or tried to adopt, an indifferent posture. In whole truthness, she shouldn't even feel this way. She has been acting equally if not worst on her behavior.

For some reason that train of thoughts rather that worsening her state gave her a small sense of reassurence, and somthing else. Nadia finally resolved not to show any more suspicious. She should be taking care of class, not these... personal things.

Xavier walks into the Defense Against the Dark Arts class for the first time. "Wow," he says walking in and looking at everything. "He spots an empty table near the back of the room and sits down, pulls out his wand as well as course book, and waits quietly for class to begin.

Professor Rae clapped her hands loudly to gain everyone's attention. "Alright, class. For those of you who don't know, my name is Professor Cassandra Rae. This is my fourth term teaching here at Hogwarts, and before that I was an Auror for the Ministry of Magic. If you have any questions about DADA or being an Auror, feel free to drop by my office at any time. Now, let's continue with the first lesson. Typically I do a brief introduction to Defense, and we'll do that, but I'd like to get you on your feet as soon as I can, as well as gauge your proficiency as a group and individually. What are the Dark Arts?"

Amy raised her hand.
"The Dark Arts deal with defensive and offensive magic," she answered.

Francis raises her hand. "The dark arts are powerful evil magic. An example of this evil magic can be seen in deadly poisons and curses."

:Zack rasies his hand: The Dark Arts is the study of dark, evil magic. An example would be the Dark Mark

Mithos raises hand "Dark Arts are an evil type of magic. examples of dark Arts are unforgivable curses."

Ron entered the classroom and nodded at the professor. He chose a seat midway through the classroom.

Nadia raised her hand though as unoriginal as her speech was. "Dark Magic is powerful magic that, different from others, can hurt. Jinx, Hexes and Curses comes from his definition. If we need to be completely honest, if that was the case, many of the magic used for protection could be dark at some point. The blurry lines can only be much more obvious when we consider the intention of the spell. Like with crimes, if the spell was used for defense, then our legal system considers it not dark magic but defensive magic.

"And in whole trueness, many times only with violence you can defend from violence. Maybe the thing that makes it the most difference is the traditional question: who started it?"

Ron turned and looked at Nadia, impressed with what she said about defending from violence.

"You know... that is way better than the, 'you can always act like adults and talk with each other' approach."

the dark arts are any type of dark magic or normal magic used in a bad and harmful way however defense against the dark arts are counter courses to prevent those unwanted jinxes

Even though people already have answered, Kali decided to say her thoughts, "Dark Magic is that which has the clear intent of causing harm."

Noel jots down a few of the other students answers with her quill.

"Excellent answers from all of you. The Dark Arts deal with magicks used for evil intent. I'm really glad that Nadia brought up the intent aspect, because we always end up arguing about this part. Dark spells are those that are intended to harm. Without the appropriate amount of rage, greed, anger, etc. necessary to power such a spell, nothing would happen. I would hazard a guess that the majority of you here could not in fact perform a truely dark spell at this point in your life. I hope that you could never be able to, but..." She shrugged. "What are some examples of Dark spells?"

Raises hand.
"The unfortivable curses ofcourse."

Ron nodded and spoke up.

"How about Crucio... thats a famous one..."

Noel raises her hand, "There are three unforgivable curses. One kills, one controls and the other causes pain."

Mithos rased his hand " Imperio Curse, Crucio and Avada Kedrava"

*raises hand*

"the crucio cruse"

The Avada Kedavra is an Unforgivable curse

Francis raised her hand, "An example of an unforgiveable curse is Avada Kedabra". "Another example of a different hex is the bat-bogey hex"

"Hexes don't really require any emotional rage to cast though, do they?"
