Quidditch

Here is where all quidditch related discussion can take place.

Well, Clare doesn't want to be captain any more. I talked with her earlier and she just can't do it, shes busy and it takes a lot of time and commitment. If some former quidditch players could PM me? And make a recommendation for a captain or step up to the plate, it would be grateful. If I get multiple submissions for the position I will talk with Clare and choose the best suitable one. Thanks.

Leeness 10-10-2004 09:10 PM

I love quidditch, but could you explain to me who is allowed to join and who is not.

La La 10-10-2004 09:30 PM

I have Pmed you so you should have already got a PM from me about the captiam thing.

Hp Nerd 10-10-2004 09:46 PM

i have a question, how do you join it, is there room??

stardancer488 10-10-2004 10:35 PM

Once we get a captian in place we will have try-outs for the open spots. Open spots will all depend on how many returning quidditch players we have. And yes I got your PM, but I am waiting to give everyone a chance :)

La La 10-10-2004 11:32 PM

K thanks

Riiya 10-11-2004 03:26 AM

Thank you, Madame Charmin. As I'm sure everyone knows we will be having our first match hopefully starting this Saturday October 16. It is imperiative we have a team by then. The regular team is open to any students who are second year and above. If you have just been sorted at the beginning of this term, you are considered a first year student and will qualify for the reserve team only. But don't get upset, reserve team members can also actively participate in the game.

To qualify for the team, you should have read as many of the Harry Potter books as you can, know and understand the SS Quiditch Rules, and own a Copy of Quidditch Through the Ages. Alot of the questions will come from this book. If you do not have a copy, please check out harrypotterlexicon.org. It has a section devoted to Quidditch and contains alot of the information contained in that book. JK Rowling gave Harry Potter Lexicon high marks on her website. The following positions have not been filled:

Regular Team

Chaser # 1:seekersgurl 1609
Chaser # 2:~*Keni's Girl*~ (co-captain)
Chaser # 3:bethzc
Beater # 1:Riiya
Beater # 2:
Keeper:
Seeker: Mrs. Weasley (captain)

Reserve Team

Chaser # 1:starrilicious
Chaser # 2:Lee_Halliwell
Chaser # 3:
Beater # 1: quidditchfan999
Beater # 2:
Keeper:Hp Nerd
Seeker:Hamsteries

Please pm me with your applications or any questions you may have. Since we all live in different time zone, there is generally no set time when matches take place, and they generally run for several days. For that reason you will be expected to periodically check the Quidditch pitch thread to see if the game is active. To find this thread, you go first to the Hogwarts School Home page and access the By the Lake Thread. From this page you access the Quidditch pitch. I wish I could tell you more about how the game will run, but this is Spot's first term as Quidditch Referee, so I have never played under him before.

Hufflepuff also needs a cheerleading team. I frankly no nothing about cheerleading and also don't have the time to organize this team as well. If anyone is interested in captaining this team, please pm me. In the meantime, I will also accept applications for the cheerleading squad and pass them on to the captain when named. Let me hear from you!

P.S. I know TONS about quidditch, I have read all five Harry Potter books, prbly 20 or more times, and I own the book quidditch through the ages.

La La 10-11-2004 11:00 PM

Hey, I just wanted to say I wanted to try out for chaser. I was on the reserve team as the #1 chaser last year and am a second year this time. Just so you know.

Great! I'm adding your name to the list as the First Seeker. Welcome to the team. I will try to post when the first game is, but it won't be until the end of the week at the earliest.

This is fantastic! I've got two chasers and a third person interested in joining the reserve team. You've made your reluctant captain very proud and happy.

Mrs. Weasley 10-12-2004 12:46 AM

Sorry this is my first day on the job, and I've already made my first mistake. When you pm me please include an application with the following information:

Your Name:
What team your applying for:
What year you are in at Hogwarts:
What position you want to play:
An alternate position:

Do you actively participate at Hogwarts ie attend classes and do the home work? I don't know why but in the past the powers the be have wanted to know this information as proof that you actively post on snitchseekers.

Mrs. Weasley 10-12-2004 06:02 AM

Here is the official list of Quidditch Guildlines Professor Puddington has posted outside of his office. Please read them before submitting your applications.

If you wish to be a Quidditch Team, you must fulfil all of these requirements:

- Must have read OotP (Lots of questions on that during the games)
- Must own a copy of the real Quidditch Through the Ages (most questions come from it)
- Must have good general knowledge on HP and Quidditch (you don't want to let your fellow team members down by not knowing what Harry's middle name is, for example)
- Must be active in the forums (online atleast 4 times a week for atleast 20 minutes)
- Must do homework set out by teachers (So I know you have been online and actually doing something)
- Must understand the official Quidditch rules well
- Must be a second- or third-year (No first-years allowed, sorry)
- Must show good house spirit!

The only acception to the "no first-years" rule is the Reserve Team. First-years may try out for that if they wish.

Also, first-years can be cheerleaders. But cheerleading you may discuss amongst yourselves - I don't organise it, so if you want a cheerleading team, you may make one. Please don't PM me about being on the cheerleading team, as it's not my decision.

Riiya 10-12-2004 11:08 AM

There are still a few positions available so if you know of anyone who would like them please tell them I must know by 10pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time Monday. I also need to know if the members of the regular team are going to be able to actively participate in the game. As you know the rules have been changed this term and reserve team members can only be used as substitutes for regular team members. So it is important that I know who can play and who cannot. The starting line up must be posted by Wednesday night, so I'm giving you'll to Midnight Wednesday (again that is Eastern Standard Time in the U.S. and Canada) to let me know something. Spot also lives in the Eastern Time Zone, but he has assured me he will be posting questions at various times of the day and night, so everyone should have a chance to participate. If I do not get a Beater #2 or Keeper for the Regular Team, I will have to use the reserve members in these positions. I will post the final starting line up by Friday at the latest in The Common Room and Quidditch Threads. I also plan to hold a meeting in this thread starting sometime today to discuss rules and anything else so we can be ready for the game. The game will start Saturday October 23, and will run at least a week or until one team catches three snitches. Please continue to check this thread.

Riiya 10-17-2004 04:39 PM

I wish I could tell you, but Spot is keeping it a deep dark secret. Please try to check the Quidditch Pitch when you can.

Mrs. Weasley 10-17-2004 11:55 PM

Quidditch Meeting

I'm sure everyone knows, our match with Slytherin will begin Saturday October 23. Spot has not given ans exact time, so it is up to you to check the Quidditch Pitch from time to time to see if the game is going on. As I have stated before, the Quidditch rules have been changed this term. Under the new rules, each team can have only seven players on the field at one time. For that reason, each team will have a starting line up made up of the following players: 3 chasers, 2 beaters, 1 keeper, and 1 seeker. Only those players whose name appears on the starting rooster can participate when the game begins. The captain and co-captain can make five substitutions during the game. I will explain how this works later. For now I plan to stick to explaining the basics of the game. To be honest, I"m not exactly sure who are new players and who have played Quidditch before, so I'm going to explain the rules like you'll are all new to the game.

Chasers and Keeper

At the beginning of the match, Spot will flip a coin, and I asume the winning captain's team will get the first chaser question. Chaser questions are directed to one particular house. That house's 3 chasers can answer these questions.

Example Question

Quaffle: How many fouls can be made in Quidditch?

Quaffle answer: 700

It is a good idea to identify what question you are answering. In the past referees have asked multiple questions at a time. You can have a chaser question directed to Hufflepuff, a chaser question directed at Sytherin, a beater question, and a seeker question all in one post. So it's a good idea to let the referee know what question you are answering. The two terms I have played Quidditch, chaser questions have been stated in the following manner:

A Chaser Question for Hufflepuff: When was the Appleby Arrows founded?

Chaser Answer: 1612

This is an inportant point to remember. Only the first asnwer counts in this game. It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong. Sometime after the question has been answered (again this depends on when Spot decides to show up at the Quidditch Pitch.) he will let us know if the answer is correct and award the points. A correct answer will earn your team 10 points. There should be a scoreboard located somewhere in Quidditch Pitch, and everytime points are awarded, this board will be updated. So it is not only inportant that you be the first person to answer, but you should also answer the question correctly. Someone said Nadia was a fountain of information on Harry Potter. That is true, but she has a tendency to answer questions before she gets her facts straight. My first term as Seeker, she was Slytherin's seeker too, and she would make me so mad because she would answer the question first but give the wrong answer.

Keeper

The Keeper, like the Chaser, is one of the most active players on the field. The difference is the Keeper can not earn points for their team. It is the job of the Keeper to block the other team's goals. Remember Wood guards the goal posts for Gryffindor. The Keeper guards the goal post by answering the opposing teams Chaser questions.

Example Question

Chaser Question for Slytherin: What is the first real present Harry receives for his birthday?

Keeper to Block: A large, sticky chocolate cake given to him by Hagrid on their first meeting.

I'm not sure if that is the correct way to answer the question, but you should let Spot know you are blocking Slytherin's quaffle. Again after the question is answered correctly, Spot will post that the Slyterin goal as be successfully blocked. If the question was answered incorrectly, he will say the goal has been successfully made. I'm not sure if Slytherin would be awarded the 10 points or not. I'll have to ask Spot about that and let you know. Anyway, only correct answers can block the opposing teams goal. Spot says that if the Keeper answers the question first, but incorrectly, they basically give 10 points to the other team so the keeper should make sure they know the answer before trying to block.

This concludes our first meeting. In the second meeting I plan to cover the role of the beaters and seekers. I hope to have this meeting posted by tomorrow. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them. I will check them out the next time I'm online.

Mrs. Weasley 10-18-2004 03:54 PM

Quidditch Meeting #2

In the last meeting I covered the rules concerning the Chasers and Keeper. This meeting I plan to discuss the Beaters and Seekers. If there is enough time, I may go into some of the miscellaneous rules.

Beaters and Seeker

The beaters and seeker can sometimes be the most boring positions in Quidditch. We generally fly around waiting for the referee to ask a beater or seeker question. To quote Spot, "the Beaters don't have too inportant of a role, so they needn't be here all the time. Every once in a while a Bludger Question wii be asked." The only problem with this theory is you never know when Spot will ask a Bludger question. It's a good idea to check the Quidditch Pitch when your online and see if a Bludger question has been asked.

Bludger Questions can be answered by either teams two beaters.

Example Question

Bludger: Who holds the record for th fasted capture of a Snitch to date?

Bludger Answer: Roderick Plumpton

As with the chaser and keeper questions, the first answer right or wrong is the only one that counts. The Beater who answers correctly first has thus hit the Bludger and deducted 10 points from the opposing team.

The Seeker is the final position on the Quidditch Team. It is also considered the most inportant position because when the snitch is caught, the game is over. The team, whose Seeker catches the Snitch, is also awarded 150 points. In snitchseekers.com's Quidditch Game, the Seeker must answer three snitch questions correctly before he has officially caught the snitch and the game is over.

Example Question

Snitch: Who was the first person to cross the Atlantic by broom?

Snitch Answer: Jocunda Sykes

Seeker questions can come from various sources including all the Harry Potter Books and movies. Last term one of the seeker questions was What is Alan Rickman's full name?

In general most of the questions that chasers, keepers, and beaters answer come from Quidditch Through the Ages, but there have been times when questions have been asked from the other Harry Potter books and the movies. If an answer to a question is to come from one of the books, the question usually includes that fact.

Example Question

What does Sirius Black give Harry at the end of Book 3, besides the letter?

Answer: Permission to go to Hogsmeade.

One final thing when it comes to answering questions in general. A question that has been asked will remain posted until it is either answered correctly or incorrectly by the appropriate player. There is no time limit when it comes to answering questions. In other words, Spot can post a question at 10am EDT, and the appropriate player not post an answer to the question until say 6pm EDT. The player does not have to be online at the same time as Spot to be able to answer the question. So it is important to check the Quidditch Pitch everytime you come online to see if there are any new questions posted.
This concludes Meeting #2. The next meeting will cover the rest of the general rules and the proper conduct at the match.

Quidditch Meeting #3

This will be the last meeting before the match. It will start Saturday October 23 and is suppose to last 3 to 4 day. Fot the record, Spot is the only one who knows the exact time and how long it will last. I've seen him post as early as 8am EDT and as late as 1am EDT, so he could post at anytime. He has also said he will vary the times he post to accommodate te different time zones. Now back to the rules.

The remaining rules apply to all players, so read them carefully. Rule #1 Thou shalt not edit or delet your posts! Any player or Mod found to have either altered or deleted a post will cost their team the match and 100 points towards the house cup. In other words when you submit your answer, that's it. You cannot correct spelling or replace a wrong answer with the right one. You cannot change your answer in any way. Spelling and punctuation errors will not be held against you, so long as Spot can make out your answer everything will be okay. The only people allowed to alter or delete a post are the people responsible for refereeing the match.

The next rule deals with the substitution of players. Only the captain or co-captain can request a player substitution. All Substitutions must be approved by the Referee before the players have been officially changed. Substitutions can be made using members of the reserve team or by switching the postions of the starting team members.

Example of a Regular Team Member being switched with a Reserve Team Member

Seeker Mrs.Weasley switches positions with Reserve Seeker Hamsterie.

In this instance I have made the Reserve Seeker the new Seeker. Mrs. Weasley is now sitting on the bench and unable to play. You can also take reserve team members and substitute them in positons other than the ones they are assigned to play before the match.

Example

Reserve Team Seeker Hamsteries swithches with Main Team Chaser bethzc.

In this instance I have taken the reserve team seeker and made him the main team chaser.

Finally you can also change positions among the starting players during the match.

Example

Chaser #1 seekergurl1609 changes positions with Seeker Mrs. Weasley.

In this instances Mrs. Weasley as become Chaser #1 and seekergurl1609 has become Seeker. It is important for the captain and co-captain to remember only 5 substitutions can be made during the match. The substitutions made in the starting line up do not count towards the 5 substitutions. It is also important to remember that when you change positions, and it has been approved by the referee, you can only answer queations in your new position. If you are a chaser who has been changed to the keeper position, you are only allowed to answer keeper question. Answering a chaser question will put you in violation of the rules.

Now that you understand how the subtitution rules work, I must tell you for this match, co-captain ~*Keni's Girl*~ will be making all substitutions during the match. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to follow the game like I normally do, so I am asking her to handle this duty.

This get us to house points. House points will be awarded based on the score. Spot will take both teams' scores, subtract the winning score from the losing one, and the sum will be the points awarded.

Example

Gryffindor 150, Slytherin 50

Spot will subtract 150 from 50. 150-50=100 points. Gryffindor would get 100 house points and Slytherin would get none. In the past house points have been awarded at the end of the term. I do not know if Spot will continue this practice or not.

Finally I want to list the character's birthdays and other interesting facts that have been listed on J.K. Rowling's website. Spot may choose to use this information among his questions.

I like the second one, and I'm a lot nervious about tomorrows game, too. This is the first time I've been captain, and I'm afraid everything is going to go wrong. It nice to know I'm not the only one who has cold feet.

Mrs. Weasley 10-22-2004 10:26 PM

The Quidditch Pitch has been officially opened so the players can subscribe to it. Spots looks over the two rosters and then addresses both Captains, "great these list are final, from this point until the end of the match each of you are only allowed 5 substitutions. The substitutions MUST be approved by either myself or other Quidditch Official (Headmaster Hendrik has expressed an interest in assisting) before that player may answer a question. Also, I will expect you to inform your players NOT to try and answer a question that is not poised for their position. Out of position answers (such as a beater answering a snitch question) will result in a penalty shot and 25 points being awarded to the opposing team.
I will be using the following symbols for the types of questions being asked"

Quaffle question: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...1/quaffle4.bmp

Beater question: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/fang01/bat2.bmp

Snitch question: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...1/snitch3a.bmp

"As I have stated before, expect the match to extend from Saturday into next week, I will try to check up on answers in a timely manner to keep the game going but just because I am online doesn't mean that there will be questions. You will also notice that I have started the thread for the first match, this is only so players and coaches can subscribe to it so they'll be notified of posts. Please inform your players about the thread location so they can include it on their subscription list. I will also be opening the Stands soon so that other students can begin arriving, taking their seats and begin cheering on their teams. Please help me in moderating the stands, remember if either side gets too unsportsmanlike there will be penalties. Good luck and as always, if you have questions, post them here or send me an owl".....Spots :ballcap:
Please read the above material carefully, so you understand all the rules. As stated Professor Hendrik may also act as a referee during the match. Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday.

Well, your right you shouldn't be worrying. As captain it's my job to worry for the whole team. Hee! Hee! I'm sure everything will be fine once we get on our broom and take the first lap around the field.

Riiya 10-23-2004 06:52 AM

I like the second one. I wonder if we could incorporate it with the blinking letter in the following signature and make a unique signature for the team.

You did the right thing posting the question here. As a beater you are not suppose to answer chaser questions. Even if I substituted you with a chaser, we would have to wait for Spot to return tonight and approve the substitution. By then a chaser could have answered the question, and since we have only 5 substitutions, we'd better use them wisely. Gill Boo makes the signitures with the blinking letters. The one I posted is one she's already done. I have put in a request with her to design a signiture using the Quidditch picture you found and adding Hufflepuff Quidditch Team. I will post it here when she has it ready. Thank you for all your help.

stardancer488 10-23-2004 04:11 PM

I just wish you guys all the best of luck! You will do great! I am reading through the thread and I am still lost on whats with the graphics, I do not mean for that to sound harsh I merely meant there cool, just wondering what there for... like signatures? I think it's a great idea, if they are... just wondering ;) Good luck huffies, and don't worry mrs. weasley, you will do a great job.

EDIT: haha I know what the graphics are for now *pokes self* anyways I think its great your adding some house spirit to your sigs... I was thinking of opening another huffs graphic thread in the CR anyways like we did last year for HIT...

Riiya 10-23-2004 04:19 PM

you're welcome Mrs Weasley :P

and i think its a good idea to open that graphic thread. though i dont remember that last term...

La La 10-23-2004 05:52 PM

If any of yall know the answer please tell me I have narrowed it dowon to these three ppl

Mullet
Troy
Moran

They are the chasers for the Ireland team

Riiya 10-23-2004 05:58 PM

the answer is Troy. i checked.
Troy dropped the quaffle to Moran. a bludger hit Moran causing him to drop the quaffle and then Troy caught it back and scores.

Riiya 10-23-2004 06:00 PM

heres a snippet from the book. im going to delete this post after you tell me you've read it.

Quote:

PORSKOFF PLOY flashed up next, as Troy made as though to dart upward with the Quaffle, drawing away the Bulgarian Chaser Ivanova and dropping the Quaffle to Moran. One of the Bulgarian Beaters, Volkov, swung hard at a passing Bludger with his small club, knocking it into Moran's path; Moran ducked to avoid the Bludger and dropped the Quaffle; and Levski, soaring beneath, caught it - "TROY SCORES!"

La La 10-23-2004 06:03 PM

Thanks

For some reason today is the day I can't seem to find my hp books any of them. :dizzy:

Riiya 10-23-2004 06:12 PM

Mrs. Weasley 10-23-2004 07:45 PM

Great job, ~*Keni's Girl*~!!! Of course we have to wait for Spot to make it official, but it looks like we've made the first score of the match. Go Hufflepuff!!!!

Riiya 10-23-2004 07:52 PM

^^ yeay!!!

Riiya 10-23-2004 08:54 PM

Quaffle question to Slytherin:

What is Blagging?
answer: Here are some of the fouls that player can receive: blagging (aaplies to all players, it is when a player seizes opponent's broom tail to slow or hinder)

Riiya 10-23-2004 09:08 PM

Quaffle question to Hufflepuff:

Who wrote "Magical Drafts and Potions"?
Arsenius Jigger

Hamsteries 10-23-2004 09:25 PM

Slytherin already answered it.... hopefully they get a quaffle question next so I can block it : )

Riiya 10-23-2004 09:28 PM

Hamsteries 10-23-2004 10:16 PM

Keep posting the answers and I will try and do the same : )

Riiya 10-23-2004 10:27 PM

same. so far theres no activity. sir spot left. im getting sleepy, as i was on a lot ^^

might leave soon.

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 01:04 AM

I must tell you there has been a change in the rules for the beaters. If a beater question is offered, then it's directed at the team not answering the quaffle question. In other words if Hufflepuff has been offered the quaffle question and a beater question is also offered, the beater question can only be answered by a Slytherin beater. When a quaffle question is directed at Slytherin and a beater question is also asked, this beater question can only be answered by a Hufflepuff beater. I hope I haven't confused you'll too much. The game is currently going on, so continue to check the Quidditch Pitch when you come online to see if Spot is asking questions.

La La 10-24-2004 01:08 AM

I don't understand that but did I do something wrong.

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 01:24 AM

No you didn't do anything wrong. You've done great so far. That new rule only effects beater questions. Your a chaser so keep answering the chaser questions.

Hamsteries 10-24-2004 02:57 AM

Quaffle Question:

What is the first style of broom that Harry ever heard mentioned?

Wasn't it the Nimbus 2000?

Hamsteries

La La 10-24-2004 03:07 AM

No I don't think so a broom that he had never heard mentioned of.

La La 10-24-2004 03:09 AM

Does any one know the answer?

If not I'm going to search the net for it.

La La 10-24-2004 03:12 AM

NO MAN slytheirn just ansered it. Wait they said the same as you. I don't understand this question.

Hamsteries 10-24-2004 03:17 AM

It was the first broom that Harry had ever heard of...

That is what the question meant : ) no worries : )

Stacy

La La 10-24-2004 03:17 AM

quiditchfan999 10-24-2004 04:27 AM

Hamsteries 10-24-2004 05:34 AM

Awesome... I think I blocked it : )

Stacy

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 05:55 AM

Great job! We'll have to wait and see what Spot says tommorrow.

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 06:00 AM

Q: Should I ask for Line-Up changes in here from now on? Or should I post it directly on the match?

so we don't clutter up the Match thread, and make use of the Locker room, I would like all requests for line up changes posted in here and PM'd to me. Once accepted, I will post them in the Match thread, that way therer isn't any confusion as to when or if they are accepted.

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 06:02 AM

Spots posts a notice just to make sure both team Captains are clear about the rules regarding the Beaters answering the Beater questions. I am trying to keep the role of the Beater as close to their role in the real game of Quidditch. The beater is there to try and knock the quaffle out of the hands of a Chaser or distract a Chaser from being able to shoot and score. Therfore in accordance with the true game of Quidditch, Beaters are only allowed to answer the Beater question if their team is on the defense. This means if a Quaffle question goes to Team A then only Team B Beaters can try to answer the Beater question (and Team B keeper can try to answer the quaffle question.)

In essence this means that during question that a Beater questions come in to play, there are 3 players on offense (3 Chasers Team A) and 3 players on defense (2 Beaters, 1 Keeper on Team B)

No matter who answers first, that post will dictate whether any points will be granted. Even if the first post is incorrect and a second my be correct, only the first post will be accepted. So in essence if you're a Beater and you see a Beater question that you know the answer to but you see that the correct Quaffle answer has already been given, then don't bother answering the Beater question. Likewise if you see that the Beater answer was already given (whether correctly or incorrectly) then there's no need to try and answer the Quaffle question that round.

Riiya 10-24-2004 06:31 AM

okz. sorry im not on just now...i dont think i will be for a while. my mom wants me to go off. she's kind of angry im on 24/7 :P

but i'll try to be on longer later.

about the new rule, i understand ^^

La La 10-24-2004 02:31 PM

Ok Im back

Just so you know

ppl

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 02:43 PM

That's great. I don't know if your answer to the question will count since Slythein's reserve chaser had already answered the question. I have lodged a formal complaint with Spot about Slytherin's repeated violations of the rules. I don't know if it will do any good, but it sure did make me feel better. You'll keep up the good work. Despite the score I think we're doing a great job as a team.

La La 10-24-2004 02:43 PM

Good jpb for catching that Mrs. Weasley. Yeah were in the lead!!!!!

La La 10-24-2004 02:46 PM

Wiat I got a question are we allowed to answer a question for a slytherin quaffle?

Mrs. Weasley 10-24-2004 02:47 PM

Well it does pay to shoot your mouth off every once in a while. I'd love to see the look on Nadia's face when she reads that post. I'm sure she'll have a few choice words on the subject.
