Lesson #3: Shrinking Solution The usual sign hangs outside the locked potions classroom: Quote:
|
The door to the potions classroom is unlocked. You take your seat, gather your things, and wait patiently for the professor to arrive. As you prepare for the day's lesson, you wonder who or what you will be testing your potion on this class... |
Serena took her things to her desk and got ready for class. She was excited about making a shrinking solution which would make things shrink in size. From her book she saw the ingredients were: chopped daisy roots, skinned shrivelfig, sliced caterpillar, one rat spleen, and a dash of leech juice. "I wonder if we will be shrinking something organic, like an iguana, or maybe something solid, like our chairs." |
Megan entered and said hi to serena. she sat down in the same place she did last lesson and got out anything she might need for the lesson. |
"Hi Megan!" said Serena making a face. "I hope we don't have to cut up our rat spleen today! I prefer handling plants and herbs over animal parts!" |
Professor Airlia floats into the classroom, looking rather worried, though it isn't that unusual these days. She makes her way to the front of the class before turning around with a forced smile on her ghostly lips. "Good morning class. As you know, we will be brewing the shrinking solution today. To start off the class, I'd like everyone to tell me one thing about this potion." |
The shrinking solution is used to make things shrink in size. The ingredients are: Chopped daisy roots Skinned shrivelfig Sliced caterpillar One rat spleen Dash of leech juice |
"It causes thinks to shrink, and is the antidote to the Swelling solution." |
Serena raised her hand, "Actually, the swelling solution is the antidote to the Deflating Draft. Professor, will it also work with the shrinking solution?" |
Writtes down notes about everything her teacher says then thinks If its not done right it can poisen the thing or person ur trying to shrink ::Raises her hand:: "Professor umm can it be dangerous if its brude up incorrectly?" |
Shannon raises her hand. "If used on a frog, the potion will shrink it to a tadpole." |
ooc: Please refrain posting multiple times in row and be patient. Try and edit your original post to include information you may have forgotten to include. Also, take note that most of my classes run over the course of several days. "I'll give 6 points to Gryffindor and 1 to Slytherin. serenasnape is absolutely correct with her list of ingredients and in her correction of Jaren's statement. Though, true to it's name, the shrinking solution does shrink an object. "Is there anything else you can tell me about this potion?" |
There's a difference between the Shrinking Solution and the Deflating Draft, which makes it not be the antidote of the Swelling Solution. The most important being the state of the object once the potion is administrated. In contrast, the swelling solution will cause and irritation and swelling of an area in particular (make is larger, yes, but not as important), and which doesn't make much difference in size of the whole object, while the shrinking solution make the target get to a miniature version of itself, completely respecting the dimensions of object in question. We can think of the Shrinking Solution as the potion-version of the spell "Reducio" (attention, "reducio", NOT "reducto") - the same the Confusing potion and Confusing Spell are. |
Jenn wasn't really listening as she sat in the back of the class staring at her blank piece of parchment. She kinda hoped it would write itself but she knew it was a fat chance of that ever happening. So instead she scribbled nonsense on her paper as she listened to the boring students talk along with the teacher. "Meh." She said quietly to herself as she leaned her head on her desk and stared at the Professor in a daze. |
When brewed properly it is bright, acid green |
"Yes, lways, that is absolutely correct, take 2 points. serenasnape has kindly provided us with a list of the relevant ingredients. Can anyone expound upon why we are using a particular ingredient? (Please, only describe one ingredient so as to give others a chance to earn some points)." |
Daisy roots stunt growth |
Jaren frowned in thought. The properties of potion ingredients had always been his vice--his policy had aways been 'give me the list of ingredients and the instructions and I will brew this right, nevermind what the ingredients do.' Of course, he knew that wasn't going to get him very far in this subject. He decided to try anyway. "Shrivelfig," he said at last. "Since this is a shrinking solution, I presume that the shrivelfig is the key ingredient that causes the shrinking to occur..." |
Jan sits quietly and writes down everything. |
*Kirstie smiles at Jenn from the bench next to her and makes notes* |
-continues taking notes while thinking. . . . . . .- |
Emmy enters the room late and sits down in the back of the class,"Sorry, I didn't mean it i was talkin to the headmaster." |
:dragon:  what were you talking about agin i need to take my notes |
ooc: Emmy, don't mention you are late and pretend you were there all along. Kali whispers to the Slytherin girl, "We're discussing the Shrinking Solution." She then turned to the professor, "The leech juice might be used in getting rid of the actul swelling because that's what leeches do to their prey. Also, if you add the wrong amount of ingredients (like too much leech juice), then your potion would turn an orange color instead of the green it's supposed to be." |
Jill listens and jots down notes on a roll of parchment. |
