Arithmancy is a Chaldean and Greek method of divination by numbers.The Chaldeans divided their alphabet into three sections of seven letters and linked these to the seven planets. The Greeks would analyze the names of opponents and predict the outcome of a contest. Arithmancy is a precursor to numerology.

I think I remember let me give it a go. The numbers go from 1-9, not ten though because it has to be like a single digit number. Then they go with letters.

Very close you missed the last ones, well the 8 and 9. 8 should be H, Q, Z and 9 should be I, R. Very good though! Another 5 points to Slytherin for answering my question correctly." she pulled her wand out and charmed a piece of chalk to write on the board that stood in the front of the class. "so now that we have the number chart you need to correspond the letters of your name to the 'certain' numbers, here is am example" she watched the chalk write down all the important facts that were needed... the board now read....

now add these numbers together, and you get the number 71. Seeing as this digit is bigger then 9 you need to simplify...so...

you get the number 8 (7+1) this is your CHARACTER number. Once you find your character number we will discuss what exactly a character number is, and what the number means.

"Mia dear, you missed a letter your numbers should read 4,9,1,2,1,7,3,6,9=42 which in return is really 6" she said calmly watching Mia's expressions to make sure she truely understood. "So 6 would be your character number, 3 points to hufflepuff for doing your work"

"hm... ok Afton" she said walking her way towards her desk and looked over her work, almost few small mistakes though" she said taking her quill and writing on the parchment "the S is number 1 not 8 and also E is 5 not 1, so your numbers should read 1,6,2,6,5,8,6,3,1,5=43 then (4+3) 7, so 7 is your character number, 3 points for all your work and for trying" she paused "also Afton you cannot have 10 as a number you need to reduce to 1" She made sure Afton understood before moving onto the next person...

"Jeanine very good, except when you transferred your number you missed one 5." she said re-calculating her numbers "So just add 5 to your final number so you get 31, which would make your character number 4, 4 points for gryff, for your work"

Professor Bree went back to the front of the class and looked at her students happy with all there hard work, "So now that most of you have your character number, does anyone know what your character number is? or what it means? NOT what the numbers mean, but what does your character number TELL you?" she asked "also if you want me to still check over your answer just raise your hand and i'll come look over it to double check"
