Default Class #2 Muggle Occupations

Ok class, I was very pleased with the submission for homework for our last lesson, hopefully we can continue with the good work. Now, muggle occupations, even though some of you may train here at Hogwarts as a witch or wizard some of you may decide to pursue alternate options available to you especially if you come from muggle parentage. Now, we are going to disuss some of those options to you. Now many muggle occupations mirror those some of you may follow as a witch or a wizard. What are some of the occupations in the wizarding world that are similar to that in the muggle world?

So we have been discussing policing and lots of questions are around. I think that the policing and judical systems of the magical and muggle world are very similar. Let's take Harry Potter for example when he was charged by the ministry for underage magic. Well in the muggle world there is such a thing called young offenders and those are muggle individuals under the age of 16 who get into trouble with the law. Just the same as Harry, these muggles are caught in the act and set a time and date for a hearing, very similar to what Harry attended. Only initially Mr. Weasley was under the impression that it was not going to be a full "trial". A trial is what it is called in the muggle world. A person goes and their case is presented before a judge and sometimes a jury, which is a group of people who work together to decide if the person is guilty or innocent. Harry went before a group of wizards which acted in a way like a jury. They discussed his infraction and decided that Harry was innocent in a very similar fashion as would happen in a muggle court. So, essentially, aurors are like police officers in the muggle world, they apprehend the criminals to take them to be sentenced for their crimes.

Thinks about what Ganymede said and tells, "I believe we do the same as muggle in that area" (ooc: lol, difficult to tell if it is direct voting or not ) Nadia hears Sangeetha and frowns, "Good question indeed." She smiles, nodding at the observation made by her friend. Then, hearing her second question she adds, "Oh, no, sorry, forget what I said. The Warlock Council was the predecessor of the Minitry of Magic which means it has no power whatsoever nowadays (=P). Lapsus, I was meaning Wizengamont."

When the professor responds to the question, Nadia ponders a little before raising her hand.

"But would you say, professor, we wizards have a democracy-kind of goverment or a monarchy-like one? Comparing to Muggles types of goverment, that is. That's what puzzles me more."

Sangeetha listens to Nadia's question. Frowning thoughtfully, she answered

'I think we, wizards, have a monarchy type government. Looking at our observations, earlier, we see that the Minister is a like a side judge. Or shall we say, the main judge. The executives and the representatives of the particualr department are just there to help the case. In Harry's hearing, we know that Madam Bones was there to judge the case as well. But dont you think that the judging responsibility had to be rested on her instead of the Minister?'

Raises her hand.

'This question, I need your theory, Professor.'

Well thats an interesting thought. To be a democrecy the public at large needs to be eligible to vote to elect their leader and in the wizarding world it doesn't look like that we do that. In a monarchy, the leader is elected by blood relation as it is right here in Great Britain. Of course everyone, even wizarding children know of the royal family. Of course right now Queen Elizabeth is in charge and soon Prince Willian will supercede her, Prince Charles, Prince William's father cannot take the throne due to his divorce to the late Princess Diana. So in being neither does that make us a dictatorship? Wel in way we do fall into that category however its almost like we have a board of members that elect our next leader, what kind of a government does that make us do you think?

'The monarcy has very little political power in the country, if the people wanted to get rid of the monarchy, they could. They are there because the democratic people allows it to. ' said ally shyly, not quite knowing.

*titles head* "Indirect Democracy? You know, like the one in USA?" she tries to respond the question.

*sighs* "I would like to say the Greek Polis Democracy but, no, there every cityzen who was considered as such had the power to act in the main cousil. Mind, it was only Free men, and slave and women couldn't, but that's because of the idiologies of the times. It was still considered like *anyone* could enter. Those are the basis of Democracy."

*ponders* "I don't know, it looks like a cult-like goberment... Oh! I know, it is an Oligarchy!"

"Oligarchy is an type of goberment where only a small group of people who auto-choose themselves as the gobernors would be in charge of everything going on in the goberment. By the look of it, Fudge's intervention in the different aspect of politics and the fact that only a small number take care of everything, makes me think Wizards have an Indirect-Democracy kind of Goberment, or an Oligarchy."

*ponders* "It all comes down to one thing. If this *board* that elect our governor is elected by the people, then it is an Indirect-Voting System. If those people are there *just becuase*, it is an Oligarchy.... I thought we wizards did have voting, how funny..."

Ok, so we have had a very interesting discussion in politics and how our government works. Now we move on to what I am sure is an interesting subject both for muggle and wizard children. Professional Sports, in the wizard world our main sport of attraction is of course, Quidditch. I am usre many of you attended the world cup of quidditch just a few years ago right here in our own country. In the muggle world there is many sports that interest muggle children. Can anyone give me some muggle sports in which someone may go professional?

Kay raised her hand and restrained herself from naming all of the sports that she knew about, so she named only one of them. "Muggles can go professional in a sport called Baseball."

They can go professional in something called Football(US). There are several teams and they use a funny looking ball. There is a championship game at the end of the season. I think it is called the Souper Bowl.

Sangeetha's hand shot up in the air. Waving it eagerly she said.

'There are many games and sports. I shall name a few:Football, Baseball, Cricket, Tennis, Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, Softball.'

Sangeetha hit her head a little with her knuckles but couldnt recall anymore. She then just looked at the Professor, shrugging.

'That's all I can remember.'

Sangeetha looks at lways, her mouth a bit open. She wondered vaguely how she could have been so stupid to forget Basketball. Her favourite game.

She waits for the Professor to call upon her name and when the Professor does, she speaks, "Its swimmimg.. some sort of sport where people swim in a pool and those professionals compete in the S.E.A games or Olympic games try to break e world records or learn different styles.. Do witches and wizards swim in the wizarding world?"

Serena raised her hand, "My favorite is tennis, where they hit a ball over a net with rackets that have strings made from cat guts, eww. The ball can only bounce once on the ground and it has to stay inside lines that shape the court in a rectangle." "Other cool sports are ice skating, which can be 'figure' skating, ice dancing, or speed skating. There are also running sports, that are for speed in short and long distances, even jumping over bars called hurdles. These can be team sports or for individuals."

Of course there has been wizards and witches who have competed along side muggles in sports competions. If you think about some of the "greats" you may have some clues. You see wizards and witches who were born muggles love to still participate in the muggle sports, however there is strict restrictions on them by the International Confederation of Wizards. Although, there pure ability does stand out to muggles, but they never have seemed to figure it out. Can anyone think of some professional athlete wizards in the muggle world?

*Sarah put up her hand and answered* Paula Radcliffe and Kelly Holmes are both brilliant runners, Paula Radcliffe won a marathon yesterday and Kelly Holmes won two gold medals in the recent Olympics. I don't know it they're magic though but some british people would say they are, not in the same sense of the word though.

Very good. The ironic thing is how muggles worship these athletes and they really have no idea. Just to mention a few: Golf - Tiger Woods, Basketball - Michael Jordan, Baseball - Babe Ruth, Gymnastics - Nadia Comenici and Mary Lou Retton, Tennis - The Williams Sisters, Football (or soccer in the USA) - David Beckham and of course the list goes on and on. The last topic of this lesson is the Gamekeeper and Veterinarian. Now here at Hogwarts our Gamekeeper is Mr. Shrine. Of course for those of you who have been here remember Hagrid. Now before some of you were a little confused as to a gamekeepers role. Who can tell me what a gamekeeper does?
