Default Class #1 Muggle Clothing

In this class we will be looking at Muggle Clothing Trends. As wizards we are used to wearing robes and such however, I am sure many of you are familar with muggle clothing as it is necessary for us to mix in with muggles frequently. Since most of us are familar with current muggle clothing or as muggles call it "fashion", we will be looking at muggle clothing throughout the eras and what is proper wear for men and women through those years.

*Kashi put up her hand and said*

By 1966 Mary Quant was producing short waist skimming mini dresses and skirts that were set 6 or 7 inches above the knee. It's not right to say that she invented the mini but she took the idea from the 1964 designs by Courrèges and as like the shorter styles she made them even shorter for her boutique Bazaar.

London girls were seeking newness only too willing to try Quant's new daring shorter dresses. The fashion trend took off because it was so different and to wear it well you had to be youthful to get away with an outfit that was so controversial particularly among adults. The Quant style was soon known as the Chelsea Look.
The shapes Quant designed were simple, neat, clean cut and young. They were made from cotton gabardines and adventurous materials like PVC used in rain Macs. They almost always featured little white girly collars.

Quant was also sported a sharply cut geometric hairstyle. One of the most famous and favoured cuts of the era was the 5 point cut by Vidal Sassoon.

*she finished saying with a low sigh*

"I never heard of the Disco Era before, mind I did heard of the Discos fever... like the Saturday Night Fever movie, speaking of John Travolta."

Nadia sighed and tried to write it all down. This was too much information, even for her - she didn't want to think of the lenght of the assigment! And with her compulsive problem... she would probably not sleep today...

Red face

"Roller skates were also very popular at the time, and were considered fashion items... I think." Pookah looked around a little embarrased.

The 1980's, not too long ago now, but when you look back at the fasion trends of that era sometimes you have to wonder what the muggles were thinking. Shoulder pads were very popular, for both men and women.

Two popular fashion icons of the music world from this era are Michael Jackson and Madonna. Both of whom remain in the newspaper headlines today. Although some of their press may not be very positive.

Colours seemed to be the thing to do. Often mixing very different colours such as flourescent pinks, blues, yellows and greens was considered to be in fashion. Legwarmers and jelly shoes were popular as well as big teased hair or using a crimping iron to give your hair a scrunched up type of look.

Not one muggle can forget MC Hammer and his large over sized pants that were often a shiny metallic type of material. This era was very flashy and all about standing out. Only how are you supposed to stand out when everyone was wearing bright colours?

What movie spawned the legwarmers craze?

"I know," she said. "The thing is, I'm not American, so I don't know much about their culture. Never heard of Flashback and the only movie I knew of that was released by that time was SN Fever^^ *lol* I'm a fan of Michael Jackson though."

*ponders* "Plus I never heard legwarmers, it's isn't a common attire in Argetina..."

"Flashdance is that movie where she is a welder or something, but wants to be a dancer. It has that scene where she is dancing then she sits on a chair pulls a cord and water spills down on her. I personally thought it was a dumb movie. I guess you wouldnt really need legwarmers where you are, but I'm from Canada and I remember people wearing them, but that fashion died out quickly. Thank Merlin!!"

Actually, the 70's was the decade that forgot good taste, the 80's was the decade of decadence. The economy was so good that people has a ton of money to spend. This was also the decade that YUPPIES emerged.

I remember seeing something about jelly bracelets and how muggles would wear tons of them, big, long danglie earings and had their hair curled in what we now call 'big hair'.

Hippie continues to take notes, and thinks "I'm good with the 60's and 80's but not the 70's. I'll wait until we hit the 80's to say anything again."

Ok so finally the 1990's. This time is kind of weird. It seems like it is divided into 2 parts. The early 1990's and the mid-to-late 1990's. In the early 1990's things were still focused on the 1980's. Shoulder pads were still there but fading and bright colours were there but also losing interest. By the mid 1990's things had changed.

Clean classic lines became more popular, for the business women pant suits were an absolute must. As women moved into more powerful positions with men it was almost as if they were beginning to dress more like them.

For the younger generation, for many boys began oversized baggy clothing. Pants often sat below the buttocks and were 3-4 sizes to large, some preferred a cleaner preppier look, golf shirts and khaki's grew in popularity. For girls, less was more. Tank tops that showed off the midriff, and short shorts with an inseam of 2". Jeans were popular with everyone, initially tapered at the ankle but eventually growing into a more boot cut style.

Fashion today in the muggle world still resembles that of the late 1990's, no major fashion trends have been initiated in the past dew years.
