Default Class #1 Muggle Clothing

In this class we will be looking at Muggle Clothing Trends. As wizards we are used to wearing robes and such however, I am sure many of you are familar with muggle clothing as it is necessary for us to mix in with muggles frequently. Since most of us are familar with current muggle clothing or as muggles call it "fashion", we will be looking at muggle clothing throughout the eras and what is proper wear for men and women through those years.

Finished taking notes, Nadia joined her classmates discussion about fashion.

"Clothes are weared the same as wizards, and the same as wizards some are prefered before others. Somehow, the primarly idea of what clothes are for had been corrupted, and now a days it's not about comfort and heat, but about what looks better in oneself. There's this thing called Icons: people that people 'want to look/be like'. They most times wear a certain expression and attitude and everybody follows them, thinking their way of live would be passed down to them if they look the same superficially. Fashion does not only affect the looks on the clothing, but in the way of looking. Fashion has reached plastic cirurgy and hair care, for example. In my country, Argentina, it's only too common to take care of our hair extra-carefully.

"Once this new 'ways of lives' enter our thick skull, wizards and muggle the same, they became part of our culture. They mess up with what we are in pro of being 'all the same'. Originality lost, stealing of looks, strange identity problems... Violence, fear, hate, jealousy... fashion has started its own trend of forgetting about half the human values we believe in.

"Wizards seem to still regain some care for culture, still dressing on robes, but not necessarily excent of the 'fashion trend'. Muggles, I've heard, are worst. I don't want to sound negative but I'm all for anti-looks view, dresing in whatever you feel like it, trying to make impressions by the attitude, not the clothing.... I'd be careful who you look-up these days."

The 4th-year Nadia CR fell silent after her speech. She was feeling extra depressive today. (ooc: sorry for the somehow political tone of it, I'm feeling particularly down today.)

Hippie wondered what that speach had to do with what was just being said, but shruggs it off and goes back to her notes.

Mikey snaps out of her reverie and notices everyone has already taken a few notes but are getting restless, so she looks for someone close to her whom she might recognize. She sees Serena and pokes her in the back gently with her quill.
"Psst! Sorry, can I take a quick look at your notes?" She whispers anxiously. She is a wreck because she is so usually so studious... she'll cry if she's missed anything important!!

Rosie was taking notes during the conversations, but now, while waiting for Proffessor Evans to continue, she had nothing to do. She twirled her pen in her fingers for a bit and began to reread her notes. She then started rewriting them since she could hardly read them.

OOC: I appologize for the lapse in time, I had some major dental work done and I am slowly recovering. We'll fly through this lesson now! :BIC

OK, so we have completed 1900-1920. Lets look at 1920-1940 a changing time in fashion. Now mostly fashion changes for women, men's fashion shows subtle changes through the years but for women we saw a direct change. The length of skirts were getting shorter. Until approximately 1928 the length of skirts were generally to the floor, but now they were getting to the knee. Dresses also became more form fitting to the body, from about 1915 to 1928 dresses were loose and waistlines were fairly undefined.

Cotton and wool were the predominent fabrics used in this era, silk if you were well off. What occurred in 1929 that caused a dramatic change to the world?

Would that be the Great Depression. Which occurred when the Muggle Financial Market crashed?

"I agree with Reign," Didymus began. "The Great Depression, or The Wall Street Crash as it is also known, happened in 1929. It caused a dramatic change to the world because what muggles call 'share prices' collapsed, setting off a chain of bankruptcies and defaults which quickly spread overseas."

Raises hand again. "Also..."

"During this time people were very poor and couldnt afford to buy new clothing. "Repair, reuse, make do, and don't throw anything away" was a motto during the Great Depression. Very few farm families had enough money to buy new clothes at a store. Mothers mended socks and sewed patches over holes in clothes. Clothes were "recycled" and reused as younger children "made do" with hand-me-downs. When farmers brought home big sacks of flour or livestock feed, farm women used the sacks as material to sew everything from girls' dresses to boys' shirts and even underpants."

Raises hand "To add to what Reign said, some Muggles would knit clothing for young children, and as they grew, they would unravel the item and re-knit something, or simply add on more wool to make it bigger."

Quite agree. Women were forced by economics to return to a more traditional life, in the face of mass unemployment, it was generally felt that women should leave the workplace to men (before the outbreak of World War II in 1941). During the early 1930s hemlines dropped again to just above the ankles, and longer dresses were again in vogue for evening wear (right). Dresses clung to the body and it was good taste the bared back for evenings. Soft crepe, chiffon, and satin cut on the bias were used.

Paradoxically, The Miss America contest (1921) had its first winnerMargaret Gorman in 1932.

Francis raises her hand. "The Great Depression. It was a severe economic crisis supposedly precipitated by the U.S. stock-market crash of 1929. This econonomic crisis had so much influence and shock, mainly because it was unprecedented in its length. It devastated the economy for all social classes and increased poverty across the whole nation"

Default Christina raises hand

"In October of 1929, the stock market crashed and the roaring 20s soon became the fallen 20s. This started was is known in muggle history as the great depression. All stock prices hit the floor and the unemployment rate was the highest ever. The rich lost all they had and the whole country was worse off. Because the United states economy was one of the highest in the world, when the US went down it brought the rest of the world down as well."

Puts her hand down and continues taking notes.
