A simple carving of a badger holding a thistle (the national flower of Scotland) marks the round entrance door to the boy’s dormitories. The arched ceiling corridor beyond is very simple in design and resemblant of a secret underground passage for what lies beyond each of the doors adorned with their respective numbers is what’s most important.
Each year has their own dormitory but all are very similar in decoration. The students all have their own individual four poster beds, soft yellow curtains hanging on each side for privacy from nosy dormmates. The beds themselves are covered in handmade patchwork quilts that look as if they’ve existed for several decades but are clean and cosy and homely enough for them to take pride of place. The bed is raised up to allow storage of school trunks underneath and each bed has a small chest of drawers for a bedside table.
The stone walls support copper sconces letting off a soft glow of light throughout the whole room. Students are encouraged to bring small personal items from home to make their stay at the school more comfortable. Cosy on down for a good night’s sleep and don’t stay up talking to your friends for too long.
Repeating fifth year was supposed to be a breeze. After all, he'd done everything before!!
But a breeze it had not been so far. Reuben entered the dorm after his detention and headed straight for his bed, faceplanting the covers with a rather dramatic groan. There was something even more soul destroying about being punished for not paying attention in class when he'd figured he didn't need to pay attention, only for said detention to prove just why he did. He'd not been able to answer any of the questions the professor had set for him to complete, and... well, it had been rather embarrassing, to say the least.
Maybe he should start studying. Except he didn't know where to start.
And he was so, so tired....
Within minutes of him faceplanting the mattress, Reuben was snoring. Still fully clothed. Still with his shoes on. Still lying face down.

Brandon Fox was spending this Saturday evening looking after personal matters. He'd spent the day practicing violin, carving wood, and then studying and reading up on advanced topics that interested him. Mainly healing... Brandon was very interested in that, and it was usually obvious within an hour of knowing him. It was his "thing". Anyways, he felt as though he had done enough of that for today, so he had gotten ready for an early bedtime and was sitting on the floor writing letters. Long, detailed ones for his family, plus a shorter and sweeter and awkward-er note asking Xander to be his Valentine.
It was this final letter that he was trying to write (he kept feeling too embarrassed and starting over) when Reuben came in and just... flopped. Reuben was a new dormmate for Brandon, and they weren't close or anything, but still. Yikes. Being in detention on a Saturday afternoon must really suck, and it looked kind of tiring too.
Brandon got up after a moment and retrieved a chocolate granola bar from his top secret chocolate granola bar stash, and set it on his dormmate's nightstand. He also got a spare cup and filled it up with water for him. He also wrote "Let me know if you want any help with class. Or studying. -Brandon Fox" on a post-it note and stuck it next to the granola bar so his dormmate would see it in the morning. Impromptu dormmate care package???
Then, Brandon finished writing and got into bed himself. It had been a long and productive day, and there was stuff he wanted to do tomorrow, and he could already feel himself getting tired.
It wasn't entirely obvious what had startled Reuben - perhaps it had been Brandon's movements, perhaps the noise of his own snoring, or the fact that his arm was caught under him at such an angle that it had gone numb. But either way, it wasn't too long after the snoring started and Brandon got into bed that he was thrashing a little, getting tangled in the sheets as he tried to right himself.
Freeing his arms, he started shaking the one that was numb violently as pins and needles raced along it - succeeding in making it worse, and knocking the cup of water onto him. That caused him to yell, and jump to his feet, and now he was shaking both arms due to the pins and needles and the fact that he was wet.
He'd yet to notice Brandon, or the granola bar.

"AHHH!"
Usually, it was Brandon whose shrieks were loud enough to wake the whole dorm. But at least when it was him doing the yelling, he knew it was from a nightmare and not because there was an actual emergency. Reuben's yell had the effect of (a) waking Brandon up, (b) freaking Brandon out, and (c) making Brandon scramble to get out of bed because he thought there was an emergency. Of course, he managed to hit his shin and stub his toe on his way up, but he was frightened and alert and barely registered the pain.
There was no real emergency, of course, unless you counted Reuben spilling water on himself. But one Brandon Fox was much too tired and a little too on-edge as a person to fully understand that. He was somewhat like a compressed spring. Of anxiety. "Reuben!! Are you okay?? What's going on??"

Reuben was yelling, Brandon started yelling, Reuben's yelling got louder.
This was a vicious circle that only stopped when his hopping about meant he stubbed his toe on a bedpost. That caused him to bend over, muttering expletives as he shook his foot. Merlin, what a NIGHTMARE.
.................. Maybe it was? A nightmare?
Nope! Reuben pinched himself to make sure, and proceeded to yell another swear word before he looked up and realised Brandon was there. What he didn't quite realise was that his dormmate had asked him something, though, so he just blinked at the younger boy. "What time is it?" he croaked eventually, voice hoarse from the yelling.
