One of the areas on the grounds Professor Paton encourages students to get comfortable visiting is the barns, with the connecting pastures nearby. The barn is conveniently located by the meadow clearing in which Care of Magical Creatures lessons are held when the weather is good. Within the barn an array of magical creatures can be located, ranging from flobberworms to the winged horses and hippogriffs to everything in between; magical and mundane alike. This is also where specially approved pets are housed during the school term.

The inside of the barn is spacious in order for the creatures to feel most comfortable. Each has their own stall specially designed for them. Most animals within the barn or pastures are rated X, XX, or XXX. Some animals reside in stalls, others are in coops or cubbies, some are in the loft above your head, and some are just regular mundane barn creatures. Each area is magically expanded inside to give the creature(s) maximum comfort and enough room should they need it. Please remember your skill level, year, and familiarity around animals when visiting the Barn and Pastures. If you have special permission to have a non-traditional pet, this is where it will stay during the school term.

Whereas Dhruv made it a point to give the Reptile Room a wide berth because of a certain creature it housed, they were not shy about visiting the creatures of the Barn and Pastures. The place was a good one for them to spend free time and to bond with both the creatures and humans. Because yes, there were often students there assisting Hady.

This morning, the DADA professor was up and about extra early as it was far easier on weekends to give the grounds more attention. With the plan to say hello to the creatures first then head off to complete Groundskeeper duties. They beeline for the Puffskeins immediately. “Good morning, Pepper. Dawn. Bubbles.” Yes, Dhruv knew each creature’s name that lived here.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have slept in this morning? Hady kept asking herself that as she made her way towards the barn. Now why hasn't she slept in? Well, besides the simple fact that she had many creatures that required her attention there was a certain crup who shall not be named ~~Beans~~ that had awaken her with his yapping. Which normally he did not do. Though it seemed that he needed to go outside this morning and was in a hurry. Therefore they were both now very much awake.

Giving the large barn door a good ole' tug, Hadleigh stepped inside and had a look around to quickly find herself not at all alone. "Well good morning, Dhruv. You're up bright and early this morning." Oh, how she loved to see others out here in the barn. Students and the rest of the staff alike.

Dhruv expected that Hady would be along soon enough. After all, how many times had they seen her working at the Barn when they were out tending to the grounds? “Good morning yourself, Hady,’’ Dhruv greeted, turning to face the woman as Bubbles the Puffskein bounced along up their arm and onto their shoulder. It was rather nice being on such good terms with the Barn creatures.

Would Hady mind if they adopted Bubbles, by the way?

“I was about to head to the Duck Pond to tend to it but then decided to say hi to your lovely creatures.” The DADA professor lightly poked at Bubbles as she bumped their ear playfully. “Need any help, Hady? I’ve got some extra time on my hands today.”

Dhruv didn't want an exact number now, did he? Cause if he did, it might take her some time to come up with it but she might eventually get there. Whether or not her answer would be correct, well that was uncertain. So could they say that it was safe to say they had come across one another a far amount of times? "Ah, good looking to you as well Bubbles. You're looking bright eyed and bouncing today," Hady replied with a small laugh. It was lovely to see her fellow colleague enjoying the company of one of the barn creatures.

Not at all! That would be super!

"Ah, I see! Well you're always welcome to visit the barn. I know for a fact that they enjoy when others more than just myself come to spend time with them." It was clear to see by how the acted. Hady could see it in how Bubbles had made their way up onto Dhruv's shoulder. The Puffskein wouldn't have done that if they were scared. "I would love some help actually, if you don't mind.. and then perhaps afterwards I could accompany you to the Duck Pond?" Consider it a trade if in helping one another. He helped her with the creatures on the barn and she would help him with the Duck Pond.

A fair amount of times indeed.

Something that the duo had in common for certain? They were both dedicated to their extra responsibilities as much as they were to teaching. “Must be something about this morning,’’ Dhruv responded nonchalantly. “And I think everything to do with Bubbles.” Here, they chuckled. “I think she has taken quite a liking to me so excuse me if I seem a little smug about it.

“Hmm, they probably get bored of you.” There was a sly grin to let Hady know they were simply pulling at her legs. “Creatures are quite relaxing to be around.” With the exception of Komodo Dragons, obviously. “My new routine involves stopping by before heading out to the grounds so you can say I really appreciate having them around.” Wonderful! Hady needed help! “We can do that. You can feed the ducks. So, what creature do we start with?” Dhruv was quite ready to get moving!

Nothing wrong with hard work and dedication to ones responsibilities. They did need to put their best foot forward at all times for the students. "There does seem to be something in the air today," Hady replied, with a small laugh of her own. "Well, if I had Bubbles sat upon my should I would be in a fantastic mood as well." Those little Puffskiens had a way of putting a smile on anyone's face.

Though she knew Dhruv to only be teasing, Hady nodded her head. "I honestly wouldn't blame them if they do. I'm sure they much prefer seeing more faces than only mine." Everyone needed a change in pace sometimes, creatures included. "I've heard several of the students saying the same, how they stop by to see the creatures because it puts them in a better mood." The Care of Magical Creatures professor nodded. "Wonderful. I'd be happy to. Normally I start right here with the smaller ones and work my way back, unless anyone's being grumpy then I'll start with them."

“You would be. Not that you don’t seem to be in a fantastic mood.” Dhruv grinned, thinking that they and Hady had the best side jobs that allowed them to be out and about this early. There was something about the morning air that always helped one feel at peace; this was something they long knew from their runs at dawn. “Would it be too much to ask if I wanted to take Bubbles out and about on the Grounds today? I promise to take good care of her.”

Of course Hady played along even if she was being serious. Of course she did. “I daresay they love you as much as they love the students.’’ That was definitely a universal thing; many creatures are known to help humans lower their stress and anxiety levels. “Speaking of the students. I’m surprised that two certain Slytherin third years aren’t here as yet.” Dhruv was obviously referring to Bryon and Aryan. "They might be sleeping in."

They surveyed the creatures closest. “Do any look grumpy?” It definitely was not Bubbles, by the way.

Hadleigh smiled. "I am in a rather fantastic mood this morning but how can I not be when I get to see all these gorgeous creatures each and every day?" They did have the best positions, didn't they? Getting to be outside in the fresh air was delightful and did wonders for her wellbeing and attitude. Oooh, what was this?! Of course, he could! "Not at all, not at all! I'm sure Bubbles will enjoy being out and about." It was always wonderful when others wanted to take one of the creatures out for a little stroll.

"Why thank you, I do appreciate that you think so. It means such a great deal to me that they feel comfortable under my care." Such a shame it would be if the creatures didn't trust her. This was not only her job but what she loves to do, tending to the creatures was what she loved (as well as teaching the students about creatures). The mention of certain Slytherin's made her laugh softly. "They might be sleeping but somehow I don't think they are. I would believe at least Bry to be eating by now rather than sleeping in." Hady couldn't recall a day that child had ever slept in!

"They do not. Which means we can start right where we are and work our way through the barn." No grumpy creatures made this morning even more lovely.

Dhruv truly knew how Hady felt. The pair might not have that much in common but their friendship was a strong one. So, the DADA professor easily understood the CoMC’s feelings. “Excellent! I’ll take her out after I've helped you.” In the meanwhile… “I’ll be back soon for you, Bubbles.” The little creature was carefully transferred back to her home. Straightening up now, they grinned to hear Hady’s happy words. “Of course. They know you have lots of experience under your belt in dealing with their kind.” Dhruv, on the other hand, was about to have a refresher on the proper care of magical creatures. “Then they’ll be here anytime! We should probably leave some chores for them to do around here otherwise they might be disappointed.

“We start with the Puffskeins then. Do you want me to feed them? Or would you rather I help you clean their enclosure?” Whichever suited Hady! After all, they were here to help in any way.

They might not have a ton in common but they had enough to help them foster a deep friendship over the last several years. Having a love of the morning fresh air, outdoors and some of the creatures she worked with was more than enough for her. Not to mention, it went without much saying that Hady was relatively easy to get along with.

"That's fine, I have no doubts she'll be looking forward to it." The brunette smiled as she watched how carefully Dhruv returned Bubbles to her home for the time being. "I like to think my experience shines through when I work with them all." She did have quite a few years of experience. A smile graced her lips along with a gentle laugh. "Aryan might be upset by having nothing to do but Bryony wouldn't mind. That would only give her more time to play with them all."

Nod nod. "Puffskiens it is. You all hear that? Your first this morning." Hady gave a hardy pat of her hand against their enclosure. "I'll take the cleaning up in there, I wouldn't expect you to do that. Plus there's more than enough hungry cuties waiting for their breakfast and some clean water." With the two of them double teaming each enclosure in that way, they would be finished on no time at all!

That much was true: Dhruv and Hady had pretty much gotten along the instant they had met during their time at Hogwarts. The fact that they both had been Slytherin students might have helped. So yes, Dhruv would say that Hady was easy to get along with.

With the question about Bubbles settled and with her back in her home for now, this meant that Dhruv was free to converse with Hady without having to share their attention with the clingy Puffskein. And to assist with tasks, of course! “That’s true. Are you heading back to Scamander’s and Adi’s during the summer? I can see why Adi refuses to replace you at the Reserve.” Speaking of Adi… “That boy gets it from his dad. I imagine he would willingly do all the work and let Bryony do all the playing with the creatures.”

Dhruv nodded. “That’s fine with me. I definitely won’t be feeding this lot boogers though. What are we feeding them today? Leftovers or insects? Just point me in the direction of where you keep their food and I’ll handle the rest.” Puffskeins were so easy to tend to.They basically ate anything.

Yes, of course! Let's never forget that being Slytherin's most surely had somehow helped in aiding to their quick friendship. Hady was very much a people person as she was a creature person.

Hady was sure that even though Bubbles was happily settled back in her home, it wouldn't stop her from seeking out Dhruv's to see when she would once more gain freedom. "Once I've had a little time at home I will make my way to Scamanders and see how things are going there. I haven't heard too much so far so I'm assuming all is going well." She did try to keep up with the happening over there even while she was here at Hogwarts. It helped.to remain on top of things so she wouldn't be too overwhelmed once she returned. "Most definitely. I've been working alongside Adi for ages." Hady loves those griffs as much as he did. "He would and he has!" she agreed laughing. "But Bry does know all the one and outs of how to care for all the creatures as well and she can do it all herself when she's focused." The smallest Paton could be a bit all over the place but she always got things done in the end.

There was another happy laugh from the brunette. "No? But don't you want to remain clean and healthy? Be able to breath clearly?" She teased, smiling over at him. "There food is in the large charmed containers there," she showed Dhruv's where. "Today's menu is a bit of leftovers with a mix of insects. So.. a nice little salad." Yummy, right? And while he was doing that, she would get to clearing out the mess.

That was fine with Dhruv; they didn’t mind one bit about being persistently giving the Puffskein their attention. “I don’t know how you do it, Hady. Hogwarts, Scamander’s, Adi’s Reserve… plus being a mum, which isn’t easy when you have a little firecracker like Bryony and a feisty one like Logan.” That last bit was meant as a complete compliment. In Dhruv’s opinion, all four of the Paton kids were exceptional. The confirmation of Ary doing all the work while Bry frolicked with the creatures made them chuckle. “It’s the same for her when she’s in class, as I’m sure you would have noticed. When Bryony applies herself, she makes spell work look easy.”

Dhruv laughed, playing right along with Hady. “That is something I prefer to do on my own.” Still laughing, they made their way over to the containers their friend had indicated. “Very appetising,’’ they called over their shoulder. It didn’t take long for the DADA professor to gather up the ~~delicious~~ meal for the Puffskeins in equal portions in separate bowls then took the bowls to the Puffskeins.

The little creatures attacked their food, leaving Hady to clean their enclosure.

Hady laughed softly. "Creatures is what I love. I never saw myself doing anything else than working with them. Now as for my kids.. well.. they made things much more interesting when they were younger for sure. As they got older they all became a very big help." The firecracker included. "That really doesn't surprise me. Ary has such a way of keeping her grounded, helping her focus in on what's important in the moment.. but should you ever need to give her a reminder don't be afraid to." The were professors for a reason after all and if a student wasn't paying attention it was their job to correct that.

Ha! This got a hearty laugh out of the brunette and a wide smile. "Whatever you do to keep a healthy lifestyle is all on you." Oh, my where had this chat come from? "To them it is!" The way the Puffskiens went to town on their breakfast had to show how much they enjoyed it all. Their happy noises should tell Dhruv's so. Hady wasted absolutely no time at all cleaning the enclosure and making sure it was perfect for the Puffskiens within so they could move onto the next one.

“I remember,’’ Dhruv responded. “You were rather creature crazy when we were students. It’s nice that you found your calling so early.” Some waited well into their life to find that, which wasn’t at all an issue; they were just happy that Hady had figured what she liked early. “You and Frankie raised those kids right. I know you two are proud of them.” Raising kids must not be easy. Dhruv didn’t know; they hadn’t really thought much about being a parent. They had simply been content to go through life alone. “Not to worry,’’ the DADA professor spoke up with a slight smirk. “I’ll do that should the need arise, but you’re right when you say Ary keeps her grounded. I’ve seen the way he nudges her back into focusing when she needs to. I think there’s no better person to assist Bryony during those times than him.”

This was a rather lively conversation and Dhruv was thoroughly enjoying it. “To each their own, right?” They threw Hady a wink before chuckling. “Clearly! Just look at them attack their food.” The way those Puffskeins gobbled it up and their body language told Dhruv how delicious they found it. It was at that moment that the professor checked their watch. The morning certainly was moving along! After a moment, they said, “I have to make a move, Hady. Bubbles seems to be finished eating so I’ll take her out to the grounds with me.” They held out a hand to allow the little creature to hop on, which it did. “I’ll be back in an hour or so.’’
