Quiz Bowl Activity: Playing for Prizes

The cloudy gray November afternoon sky is reflected in the ceiling, but the Great Hall itself is kept warm and cozy by an array of floating candles. The four house tables are in their normal places, and there is a red button at each seat. Each table is full of nutritious snacks scientifically proven to boost brain power. There are pots of coffee and tea, as well as water and fruit juices. On the food side, there are fruits and berries, nuts and seeds, and small bars of dark chocolate. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not combine some of everything to create your own trail mix?

The throne-like seat normally reserved for the headmaster is positioned in front of the staff dais, rather than behind it as usual. Professor Carton sits in the chair, casually observing the arriving students. Two curious-looking objects sit on the staff dais behind him. On his right side is a 6x5 gridwith squares marked with various numbers. On his left is a glass cabinet with four shelves. The first shelf holds various school supplies; the second a selection of Honeydukes candies; the third an array of creature plushes; and the fourth several games, such as Wizards Chess, Exploding Snap, and Snitch Snatcher.

“Hello, welcome in!” Profesor Carton greets the students. “Sit at whichever table you like, but please don’t touch the red buttons yet.”

OOC: Welcome to the Quiz Bowl meeting! This rp is open to all Hogwarts students & professors. As this is not a lesson, you may play both of your characters if you wish. We’ll begin in 24-36 HOURS. ^_^

A quiz bowl activity!

Excellent!

Dhruv loved quizzes, both taking part and observing. Today, however, they aimed to just be an observer. It would not be fair to the students if they took part now, would it? They slid into the Great Hall, removing their shades as they did so. “Hallo, Headmaster Norman,’’ they said softly to the Transfiguration professor, voice heavy jest. “Everything all set?” they continued as the glasses were tucked onto the front of their shirt, against their chest. Oh, look. Dark chocolate! Dhruv will be snagging a bit of that soon-ish.

Quiz bowls weren’t bad, even if the questions were sometimes difficult. This was Aryan’s opinion anyway. As he made his way into the Hall, the Slytherin observed the set up, the snack and the two professors that were so far there. There was a finger wiggle-wave for each of them {though a more relaxed, enthusiastic one for Khanna because they happened to be Dad Adi’s friend} as he settled at the Snake table.

His gaze drifted to the food, automatically seeking out the sours followed by the salty. No sweets for him as usual, thanks.

As Regulus arrived at the Great Hall, the first thing that struck him was the need to bite back a joke about Professor Carton usurping the Headmaster, what with claiming his chair and all. Generally speaking, at least in public, Regulus wasn't much of a jokester. He kept them in his head, unless he was around those he was comfortable with.

Which, in a roundabout way, was what had drawn him to the quiz bowl activity. Friends. Associates. Regulus ought to have more of those - he had been repeatedly informed of this, and had started to come around to the idea... somewhat - and the first step to that was actually engaging properly with others.

He let his gaze move between the grid and then the cabinet up on the dais before proceeding into the Great Hall proper.

"Afternoon," Regulus said to Carton, Khanna, and the younger Slytherin boy, Atreyu-Rehman when he was close enough for his voice to easily reach all three without shouting. He parked himself at the Slytherin table, more out of habit than anything, and made sure to snag himself some coffee and a few of those little bars of dark chocolate to dip into it.

Entering the Great Hall for the Quiz bowl activity Emmie was immediatly struck by all the various supplies on the tables near the Staff Dias. There was everything from food and drink to creatures plushies to games like exploding snap. Then she noticed the big red buttions that were pretty curious, were they supposed to press on those when they knew the answer to a quiz question? Waving to Professors Carton and Khanna she greeted "Good afternoon Professors!" Then she moved to take a seat, grabbing a bar of chocolate and some fruit juice before going over to the snake table. "Hi Ary, can I sit with you? Also can we team up for the quiz bowl too? Or do you think we have to sit at our different house tables?" Emmie really hoped not because she so far was the only eagle present.

Aurora had absolutely no business in being here other than that she was bored by herself in the common room and had seen the poster on the noticeboard. Quizzes usually meant lots of people joining in and lots of people equalled more to talk to. Whether she was going to be any helpful contribution to the actual quizzing part of the activity was up to debate.

Unfortunately the fourteen year old was not one of those intellectual Ravenclaw’s who knew everything. It wasn’t that she was stupid but rather she found so many subjects that interested her it was hard to focus on one to become an expert in. Ask her to recite all the fairytale characters or the names of each of the winged horses housed in the school stables and she was your girl but anything involving dates or famous people and she was about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Still she was here with her hair tied into a high ponytail swishing from side to side as she bounced her way into the Great Hall sending a grin (albeit a slightly confused one because she was sure that chair belonged to Winterbottom) towards Professor Carton and Professor Khanna before plopping down in the space to the right of Regulus at the Slytherin table. “Woah, it looks different from over here..” Not that the Ravenclaw table was far from there considering it was the next table along but those extra few feet of difference were clearly enough to make a comment over.

The Quiz Bowl was not an extracurricular she had participated in last year, but this year Florence thought she would give it a chance. The competitive nature was appealing, and it provided both an opportunity to flaunt her knowledge as well as acquire more. So, in short, it seemed promising.

And so the second year strode into the Great Hall, noting the variety of treats and activities as well as the two professors up in front of the staff dias - with Professor Carton in the Headmaster's chair? - and a group of students all seated at the Slytherin table. Even ones who were not in her house.

Interesting. She wasn't sure it was a requirement to be at that table, considering there were red buttons on all the tables - but, really, who wouldn't want to sit at the best house's table?

"Hello, Professors," she said politely, before she took a seat across from Regulus and an older Ravenclaw (Aurora), offering a polite smile to them and to her yearmates, Aryan and Emmeline, if they happened to look her way.

"I suppose we won't be going hungry," she commented, eyeing the snacks and drinks. She wasn't hungry herself at the moment, but she was inclined to pour herself some tea.

"I'm not late...I'm not late!"

Out of habit and nary a stray thought, Anna rushed over to the Hufflepuffle table (and down towards the front) to grab a seat for another Quiz Bowl meeting. She was ON TIME (...ish...) this time and had even tried to review some of the questions and answers she had taken note of from previous meetings. Despite her earnest efforts, Anna was truly a terrible member of any team and all but a lost cause when it came to individual competition. Of course it never stopped her from trying and each meeting she did leave with at least one new nugget of information that she carried with her at LEAST until arriving back at her own common room. "Heya, hiya, professors!"

It wasn't until she glanced over that she realized that maaaaaybe she had not needed to sit at the Hufflepuffle table, but she had already plopped herself down and sitting comfortable in criss-cross-applesauce pose whereas everyone else was congregated over at the Slytherin table. She would have thought that maybe the theme of today was 'out of your comfort zone' or 'try a new perspective' since Aurora (big wave to you, bestie) was over at the Slytherin table AND Professor Carton was in the headmaster's seat which had ALSO been moved...but then the majority of the people at the Slytherin table were Slytherins so...that broke her ideas about the theme entirely. See? This is what happens, Anna Walles, when you arrive a tiny bit late to things!

Monsieur Feirgrund was in as well as he joined Professors Carton & Khanna. From a Healer's standpoint, it was important to always be on hand if needed. Even though the most the challengers would require is a nice Calming Draught in the heat of competition. "Good day," E said as he joined to observe sitting by Dhruv, giving his usual shoulder grip greetings. "Nothing like a fun way to stimulate the young minds," He commented. Trying not to smirk at Carton being addressed as the Headmaster of the event, "Got any good jokes?"

By the time to students joined in, he was there to smile and say "Good day," to those acknowledging his direction. This was looking to be an exciting event.

Some might ask why Bryony Paton would attend a quiz bowl. These things really weren't at all her slice of bacon. She wasn't typically the best when it came to games such as these but it was all about having fun. And what better way to have fun then to join her friends and peers in a game she probably was going to do terribly at. There was nothing wrong with having a good laugh at herself if she didn't do as well as some of the other students might.

The second year skipped into the Great Hall, her long blonde hair somewhat a mess about her face and her cheeks flushed from the cold. "Hello, Professor Carton.. Professor Khanna, Professor Feirgrund! My mama said she'll try to be here soon she's tending to something in the barn." Clearly she meant Professor Paton as everyone knew by now. This wasn't a lesson or anything so it was okay for her to call Hady her mama, yes? It was just so difficult for her to call her anything other than that!

Oooooh, look there was food! No one pay her any mind while she took a bit of the fruits, berries, nuts and seeds and a little chocolate to make her own mix. This was perfect brain food! Good idea, professor! As for a drink.. she couldn't quite decide which one she wanted right now so she was going to skip that for a bit and see which she felt like having in a little while.

Friendly finger wiggles were given to EVERYONE when Bry turned around towards the house tables. The choice was easy, her house table was calling her name! Bouncing along, she greeted both Ary and Emmie. "Hi, hi! Wants some? This was directed mainly at Ary cause they always shared food but Emmie was welcome to some of her snack too if she liked. "Do we get to work together in this game or no?" Teams would be sooooo much easier!

Game Info/ Rules here! ^_^

From the throne, Norman eyed the doors for incoming people. This was a much better vantage point than his usual seat at the far end of the dais! He almost didn’t want to put the throne back at the end of the game… almost, but not quite. Dhruv’s greeting got a soft chuckle. While he knew he wasn’t cut out for the job, Headmaster Norman did have a nice ring to it. “Hello, Dhruv,” he replied. “All set for now, though I might need a hand with the prizes later.” He gestured toward the glass cabinet.

Norman noticed Ean trying not to smirk but pretended not to. “Good day, Ean,” he greeted with a slight smirk of his own. Jokes? Him? The man must have him confused with his mirror image from last term! He didn’t know any good jokes, at least none he could repeat in front of the students. Still, he supposed he should try to play the part if he was going to sit in the headmaster’s chair. “What’s the difference between a kneazle and a comma?”

The students started arriving not long after. Atreyu-Rehman’s finger wiggle got a polite nod of acknowledgement. “Hello, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman,” Norman greeted. Prince’s arrival likewise received a nod. “Good afternoon, Mr. Prince.”

Oh good, some of his Ravenclaws had turned up! “Hello, Miss Vance, Miss Ackerly.” Norman overheard Vance’s questions, replying to both with a nod. “I’ll explain the rules in a bit, but teams are allowed. And you may sit anywhere.” He couldn’t help but smile at Ackerly’s observation about the different view from the Slytherin table. He knew the feeling!

“Good afternoon, Miss Schultz,” Norman returned the next arrival’s greeting with a slight smile. He had barely spoken when Walles’s voice distracted him, and his smile nearly grew into a laugh. “Hello, Miss Walles. No, you’re right on time.” Not that it would’ve mattered had she actually been late. This wasn’t a lesson; students were free to come and go as they please.

“Hello, Miss Paton,” Norman greeted the young Slytherin with a smile and a nod. He understood work obligations. Hopefully Hady would turn up later. Blink, blink. Again with the teams question? “Yes, you may work in teams for this game.”

**************************************

Norman kept his eyes on the double doors until the flow of arrivals ebbed. After allowing a few more moments for stragglers, he addressed the group, “Welcome to the Quiz Bowl! Today we’ll be playing a variation of the muggle game Jeopardy. For those unfamiliar with the game, the board is a 6x5 grid like this.” He gestured to the grid at his right. “The game consists of trivia questions in six categories. Each category has five questions, valued at 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1000 points respectively.”

He glanced around the room for any signs of confusion before continuing, “I’ll read the clues to each question. If you think you know the answer, hit the red button in front of you with your hand or your wand. The buttons will make a noise like this - “ He picked up the nearest buzzer and pressed the button; it made a loud BUZZZZZ! “After you’ve hit the buzzer, you’ll give your answer, which - and this part is very important - must be given in the form of a question. For example, if the clue was ‘this fast-flying golden ball is worth 150 points in a game of quidditch, your answer would be ,‘what is a Golden Snitch?’”

Norman paused for a minute to allow time for the players to absorb that information. Was that clear so far? Okay, good! Moving on… “In a regular game of Jeopardy, the first person to buzz in with the correct answer earns the points and picks the question based on category and point value. Since there’s a big group today, we’re changing the rules a bit. For this game, everyone who buzzes in with a correct answer in the time allotted gets the points for that question. Incorrect answers, answers not worded in the form of a question, or answers given without buzzing in first will not receive points!”

“Questions will be randomly assigned. You may work in teams of 2-3 people if you wish, but only one person per team needs to buzz in to answer a question. Be sure to keep track of your scores because you’ll be redeeming your points for these prizes at the end!” He gestured to the glass cabinet to his left. “I’ll give you a few minutes to pick teams. Are there any questions about the rules before we start the game?”

OOC: Thanks for coming! We’ll officially kick off the game in ABOUT 18 HOURS. For now, here’s a recap of the game rules:

1. Professor Carton will announce the category and point value for each question before reading the clue. Questions will be randomly assigned.

2. Players are to buzz in to answer each question. Teams are allowed, but only one person needs to buzz in to answer. Answers given without buzzing in WILL NOT count!

3. Answers must be phrased in the form of a question (“What is a Golden Snitch?”) to count.

4. Each correct answer within the time allotted earns the points assigned to that question. You DO NOT have to be first to buzz in to receive points! (OOC: there will be 16-24 HOURS for each question. Players are free to join the game at any time but WILL NOT receive points for prior questions once Professor Carton has announced the correct answer and moved on.)

5. Points earned can be redeemed for prizes at the end of the game, so please keep track of your scores! (OOC: Please title each game post with your team (if applicable) and your current score)

6. OOC: Feel free to PM me with any questions! ^_^

“I can help with that,’’ Dhruv assured Norman. That and whatever else that needed to be done. And there were the students arriving now. By the looks of it so far, the activity was going to have a fairly decent turnout. “Good afternoon,’’ Dhruv called to Aryan, Regulus, Emmeline, Aurora, Florence and Bryony. Did they mind calling individual greetings to the students as they filed into the Great Hall? Not at all.

Dhruv had become so used to those shoulder grips that Ean gave, as much as they had become accustomed to returning them in the form of a couple of light pats to their friend’s knuckles. They could not help but to shake their head vigorously at Norman in a firm ‘absolutely not’ manner in response to Ean’s question. “You two know that I never get those jokes right off the bat, or usually slow at figuring out the answers.”

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

In the end, Aryan settled for a handful of cashew nuts which he had carefully placed in a tiny bowl. He had already dived into the nuts when Regulus had come along. So, the fourth year received a wave with slightly salted fingers. Woops! Excuse his manners, Regulus! Ary then turned his attention to Emmeline, pleased that she had opted to sit with him rather than at the Ravenclaw table. The boy patted the seat beside him. Yes, she could sit with him. “Hi, Emmie. If teams are required, then sure. I’d like that. And I thinks its okay if we sit at different tables.” Ary had chosen the Slytherin one because he was not willing to come out of his comfort zone at the moment. He did happen to catch Florence’s smile so he returned it with one of his own. “No one’s going to be hungry,” he agreed with her. And of course he wouldn’t refuse Bry’s offer of food so the second year accepted a few berries. “The three of us can definitely be a team then.” Ary was quite looking forward to this!

He had to focus on all the information given by Carton because it was so much! Aryan was vaguely familiar with the came, having come across reruns when he was channel surfing at home so that helped.

Anyway…

“Looks like we’re good to go,’’ he told Bry and Emmie. This trio was going to do exceptionally in this Quiz Bowl!

Chelliephone 01-25-2024 12:59 AM

She was a running a little bit behind schedule, which was not uncommon for the Gryffindor brunette. But she was also unphased by her lateness as she strode into the Great Hall just in time to hear Professor Carton's instructions. Quiz Bowl was not a usual Vera Thanatos type of event, but it was also something she hadn't ever really checked out before. And as this was the year of freedom, she planned on taking full advantage of it to experience every bit of Hogwarts that she possibly could. Which meant different clubs - though she was really only sitting in and shadowing meetings as opposed to officially joining. Being an official member would mean giving up the things she loved and already participated in and she was not looking to do that, thank you.

Glancing over the tables while she listened to Carton, all the Professor's got a wave over hello from her, as well as the students at the varying tables (though perhaps her smile might have been a bit brighter at the familiarity of Ary, Bryony and Aurora). From what she could tell, she did not see anyone at Gryffindor or Ravenclaw which was the places she would have preferred to sit (familiarity and all) but there was a solitary Anna over at Hufflepuff so Ve made her way that direction and slide into a seat by her younger friend. The directions sounded fairly simple, though she was already certain she'd get half of the questions wrong (probably by forgetting to press the button, honestly) but it should be fun all of the same. Plus, was that prizes she saw???

With no questions here, hazel eyes once more scanned the faces currently gathered before her attention shifted to the Hufflepuff. "Annaaaaa bo banana fi fy fo fannaaaa." She sang, smiling at the girl. "Want to start a group?" Vera wouldn't be offended if she did not - she was perhaps not the ideal teammate if someone was really aiming to y'know... win.

sweetpinkpixie 01-25-2024 03:01 PM

Professor Ameliorating Teddy Bear really was so dreamy and she appreciated his nonchalant response to her out-of-breath entrance. She had thought about maybe going to bombard him with some musing about some medicinal herbs and flowers she had just so happened to stumble upon while flipping through a magazine she had found in the library and maybe she would get around to actually following through with the intention today. Tomorrow? Eventually!

Aaaaaaaaand she especially appreciated Professor Carton acknowledging that she was on time! It was true that as a fifth year she really ought to have a handle on the castle and know her timetable and be much better at time management that Anna reflected and she was growing more and more embarrassed and frustrated by these truths, but she was really trying her best and it felt very reassuring and encouraging to have those efforts noticed. And speaking of noticing, Anna hardly faulted Professor Khanna for not noticing her - they had, after all, been in conversation with someone else and she was a petite fun-sized Hufflepuffle. Not to mention the anticipation of today's Quiz Bowl meeting surely would have anyone delightfully distracted!

And speaking of...she had never heard of Jeopardy but she was rather smitten by this whole button pushing situation. She was bound to forget to answer like she was answering a question though...or maybe she wouldn't because it was such a funny way of speaking that it was kind of like memorizing lines for a play as a character entirely different from yourself. That, somehow, tended to make things easier for her and why Drama Club had been so good for her and to her. Sincerely, if she could manage to answer just ONE of the categories correctly - meaning correct answer and correct form of answering - then she would be overjoyed. And...maybe...if she left with a lollipop too. Not even her optimism was irrational enough to believe she could come out with something BIG - and she would not simply copy correct answers from her peers without having known that same answer first!

So, basically, no further questions here! Other than wondering if Aurora would come over here or if she should go over there or....

"Vera!" she chirped gleefully while she kept the older Gryffindor's infamous title quiet...at least for now. It seemed like it was Vera's turn to give out a nickname and not just a nickname but it came with a little jingle as well! It all caused her cheeks to blossom like the roses on her favorite tea rose bush in the greenhouse. "Sure! It would be an honor! We'll give it our all!"

MadMadamMalfoy 01-25-2024 09:18 PM

Game starts here! Clue 1: Now We're Cookin! for 400

Norman smiled slightly, nodding in reply to Dhruv. His smile turned to a soft chuckle at the mention of jokes. He could relate; he never got the jokes right away either! As such, he saw no reason to keep everyone waiting for the punchline. “A kneazle has claws at the end of its paws. A comma is a pause at the end of a clause.” Corny joke, right?

His bluish-green eyes scanned the hall. He noticed Thanatos arrive while he was explaining the game rules and gave the girl a nod in greeting. He could already see a few teams beginning to form. Thanatos and Walles had partnered up, and it looked like Atreyu-Rehman, Paton, and Vance were forming a group.

********************************

After a few minutes, he addressed the group as a whole, “Let’s play Jeopardy! Our categories are…” He tapped the grid with his wand, and six category titles appeared in the top square of each column.Spell Ya Later! for spell trivia; Creature Feature for - you guessed it - creatures; ‘Facts and Figures for history; Now We’re Cookin’! for potions and ingredients; Oh, the Places You’ll Go! For magical transportation and locations; and Pop Goes the Weasel for pop culture, magical and muggle.”

Norman paused a moment to allow the students time to give him their full attention. He tapped the gird with his wand again; the second square in the fourth column lit up. “Here’s the first clue. The category is Now We’re Cookin’! Worth 400 points: ‘Not only an antidote to most sleeping potions, this versatile potion heals injuries and replenishes stamina.’

OOC: The game has begun! You may continue picking teams if you need to, but don’t forget to indicate which team your character is on in the title of your post. The game rules are in this post; I’ll also put the rules & categories in the top post for easy reference. You have 16-24 HOURS to answer this question!

FearlessLeader19 01-25-2024 11:48 PM

Team: Ary/Bry/Emmie ; Points = 0

Spotting Vera’s radiant smile, Ary gave her a cheeky grin, just for his own amusement {and perhaps Vera’s too}. He also could not help but wonder why her smile was that bright. But it didn’t matter; as long as she was happy, right?

Professor Carton was finally starting off and the Slytherin was suddenly paying rapt attention. The categories were rather interesting, he was going to right off the bat admit that. Truthfully, he could not wait for CoMC, Charms and Herbology related questions.

Oh!

He knew the answer to this!

Ary pressed a slightly salt- crusted hand down on the buzzer.

“What is the Wiggenweld Potion?”

PhoenixRising 01-26-2024 09:30 PM

Anyone want to team with Emma? <3

Emma wasn't really the quiz type. She actually had come to the Great Hall because she was hungry (duh! why else would one go to the great hall?) and somehow ended up hearing Professor Carton explaining some sort of game that was going on and apparently just started? Oh ... one could team up if they wanted?

She frowned when saw Emmie, Ary, Bry already had formed a group and she supposed she could have asked to join them but somehow it just didn't feel right. Besides, she wasn't even sure how long she was going to stay if there wasn't going to be food served anytime soon. She'd have to wander off to the kitchens to ask the house elves nicely for something.

Hearing the first question, she looked around a moment before buzzing in. "What is the pepperup potion?" she countered to Ary's suggested answer. She wasn't sure if it healed, but it did revitalize one's stamina.

MadAlice 01-26-2024 11:21 PM

Here for Emma!

When Hope entered the Hall, she noticed a lot of people already sitting at the Slytherin table. Hmm...were they supposed to sit at their own tables, then? But Professor Carton had said any table, or so she thought she heard. She had a great desire to sit at another table than Ravenclaw, just because she could. Anna and Vera were already paired off at the Hufflepuff table (the House Hope had secretly thought she would be place in). Hope wasn't sure she had enough courage (or gall) to sit alone at the Gryffindor table. Then she saw Emma sitting apart and looking like she might need a partner, so Hope went to join her. And, hearing Professor Carton start the game, Hope thought that she knew the right answer, too!

Before Hope could get settled, Emma had buzzed in with her own answer. Hmmm...Hope didn't think that was the right one, either, but she'd already joined up with Emma and didn't feel it would be right to bail out now. And who knows...maybe she was right...

sweetpinkpixie 01-27-2024 05:02 AM

OH OH OH OH OH they were starting!

Anna linked arms with Vera (clueless solidarity represent!) and gazed upon their professor without blinking. It was actually kind of hard to do since her eyes started to sting a couple of second in and her lashes were twitching to catch the tears that now gave her eyes a glassy glaze. To say she was mislead by the category would be entirely correct, but she wasn't disappointed. She actually found it rather clever...even if some memory buried deep in the depths of her thoughts was bleating about it being a disservice to the divine art that was potion making to compare it to cooking. Not knowing where the thought (the memory?) was coming from made it easy enough for her to dismiss and focus instead on the words Professor Carton was bestowing upon them.

Potions was not her best subject...nor even a middle subject...and really more basement level and a basement whose walls were splattered and splashed with failed explosions. HOWEVER, the more she got to thinking...the more she wondered if the potions was the misdirect and not the title of the category. They WERE playing a muggle based game right now so maybe all the answers had a non-magical spin to them?!

"Pssssst...Vera!" she stage whispered to her teammate. "I think it's soup! Warm soup that your mum or dad makes you when you are sick! Get Well Chicken Noodle Soup! The smell sure wakes me from my deepest fever induced sleeps AND it invigorates and heals...and also soup is really versatile as well!" But, seeing as they were a team, she did not want to speak for the pair of them without proper counsel!

Chelliephone 01-27-2024 10:53 AM

Anna/Vera - o points

Was there a more adorable Hufflepuff than sweet Anna?? Vera was certain she'd be hard pressed to find one, though perhaps adorable wasn't the right term anymore either with the slightly younger girl now being a FIFTH year. Which was wild if you asked her. Perhaps as wild as Vera herself being in sixth. Weren't they still first and second years?? Perhaps in spirit only.

And maybe level of knowledge, at least in the case of Ve.

At the agreement to partner, Vera beamed back and gave a pat of appreciation to Anna's hand that had looped arms with her own. If all else failed, she was certain the pair of them and anyone else of they gained a third would at the very least have fun!

With the official start of the game, her attention turned to Professor Carton, before then Aryan and Emma in turn of their answers. So cooking was for potions was it? She would have agreed with Anna that it was a very clever change in title, but also the false advertisement had the brunette mentally pouting just a wee bit. Thanks to intensive training she'd managed to scrape together a passing potions grade, but it was by far her worst subject. This was ... Probably not a strong start for the enthusiastic pairing. Cooking though? Well,, that she knew some on. So when her partner was offering up answers for more mundane solutions, she was happy to follow the thread.

"Ooh, that IS a good one! Tea is another option. It can have caffeine which keeps one awake or replenish energy. And um... Well it's certainly good for soothing sore throats isn't it?" Could these be considered more holistic approaches? Who said you had to throw a potion at every illness. Even if this was specifically a potions category which kind of suggested as such. "I like soup though. Let's go with that one!" She said decidedly, wanting to ensure they got an answer in before Professor Carton moved on to the next thing.

Reaching out with her free arm, she smacked the buzzer before offering their answer. "What is Chicken Noodle soup?" With the answer offered, Ve beamed again at Anna. They answered the question in the correct form AND hit the buzzer. A proud moment indeed!

With Ary and Emmie!

From the moment her bottom settled into the seat beside Ary and Emmie, a lot was going on. One of her favorite older Gryffindors walked in and right away her attention was swayed that with wiggled fingers. Hi Vera, hi! A berry was plucked from her bowl when Ary was finished taking what he liked and dropped into her own mouth to munch on.

A big smile graced her lips that they could be a team. Surely between the three of them they would get loads of correct answers. "Great! We'll make a really good team." Bry nodded her head enthusiastically. It was right around this time that Professor Carton began to explain all the rules. And there was lots. Thankfully the game didn't seem very difficult though despite all the rules and she thought she understood it all.. mostly. Casting a quick glance at her teammates, she smiled."Only one of us has to gives the correct answers, right?" It wouldn't make sense for them all to be buzzing in giving answers. Hopefully whichever one of them hit the buzzer first and supplied the answer was right... but if they weren't, that was okay. This was only for fun anyhow.

The very first question right off the bat had Bryony taking a moments pause. This was a little tough. She hadn't even put all her thoughts together before a buzzer was sounding at their table. Her head snapped to the side and blue eyes landed on Ary, she should've guessed he knew this one. "I think that's it," she whispered, reaching over to pat his hand.

Clue 2: Creature Feature for 200

Norman saw excellent teamwork as he watched the students from the headmaster chair… Walles and Thanatos conferring on the answer, Archer and Montmorency teaming up, and Paton encouraging Atreyu-Rehman. He showed no sign of emotion as the teams buzzed in with her answers, so as not to give anything away. Some were correct, others not so much, but that didn't matter. The important thing was that the students were following the rules and showing good sportsmanship!

”The correct answer is, ’What is the Wiggenweld Potion?’ he said after a minute or two. He tapped the grid again with his wand. The X square in the 2nd column lit up. ”Next clue: Creature Feature for 200 points. This proud flying creature is born from a single fragile egg usually hatched in twenty-four hours.:

OOC: Sorry for the delay… had a huge work project due yesterday! >_< Clue 2 is up. Players will have 18-24 HOURS for this one Remember, no catching up on previous questions!

Team: Ary/Bry/Emmie ; Points =400

The moment his answer left his mouth, Ary felt a slight competitiveness flame spring up in his chest. He knew immediately where it came from: he might not be dad Aditya’s biological son but the man’s integral role in his life no doubt rubbed off on him. After all, how many times had he watched his dad get competitive as a pro Gobstones player? What about the tales he had heard about his dad’s determination to outdo himself in Gobstones and Dueling Club at Hogwarts?

So, for a minute when Emma mentioned the Pepperup Potion, he wondered if he had been on the right track with his own answer. He was certain Chicken Soup was not the answer even if logically, soup definitely was helpful in making one feel better. “Only one person,’’ Ary whispered in response to Bry’s answer. He grinned when she patted his arm and he lightly bumped her shoulder in response. “I hope so.” He wanted to do his best for his team.

And he was rewarded with Carton confirming his answer was correct. Ary was thrilled, but he was already preparing for the next question…

Which happened to be an easy one!

“I know this!’’ the Slytherin told Emmie and Bry, excitement written all over his face. Bry got a knowing look because how often had the two of them witnessed this particular creature emerging from an egg at the Atreyu-Rehman Hippogriff/Dragon Reserve? “I promise the two of you will have a go at the next question.” He couldn't resist a creature one! Creatures were his love! With that, his left hand slapped at the buzzer. “What is a Hippogriff?”

Oh. There was food here. Of course it was just nuts and berries and chocolates. What she REALLY wanted was a great big sandwich! With meat. Or some fried chicken. She wasn't feeling just snack food, but she wanted a meal!! Maybe sitting at the Ravenclaw table (by happenstance) would give the small blond some brainpower. She smiled welcomingly when an older girl joined her, hoping maybe she was decent at this quiz stuff?

Chicken soup ... that was a good answer, but it wasn't a potion. Wasn't the answer supposed to be a potion. Oh, Ary's team got it ... It was Wiggen-whatever. Note to self: study with Ary.

Next question was up and it was about an egg that hatched within twenty-four hours. She glanced over to Hope, shrugging and thinking maybe she ought to buzz in for this one. "Is it Ashwinder?" she whispered to the older girl, hearing Ary's answer. Wait, were hippogriffs born within twenty-four hours??? That wasn't right, was it?

Joining Anna & Vera

“Ooooooh I love soup” Came a voice to Anna’s side as Aurora slipped into the seat next to her, beaming at the two as she did so. No she didn’t ask permission from the pair to join the group but considering they were two of her favourite people she was sure they wouldn’t mind the interjection.

Although unfortunately the Ravenclaw didn’t add any further brain cells to the occasion, she was just sort of there as a cheerleader to her best friend’s incredible (and likely incorrect but that never changed her opinion) brain. That and the young ones over at the Slytherin table seemed to know everything and it was making her feel a little dumb. Oh and Vera was older and therefore it was natural that she would have the knowledge that Aurora severely lacked or even if she didn’t, she looked cool and confident and therefore she was greatly admired.

Shoving some berries into her mouth which were unexpectedly sharp and made her nose do that wrinkled bunny scrunch thing, she half-listened to the next question somewhat perking up because at least creatures were something she was passionate about. To her teammates only did she replicate Anna’s theatrical stage whisper. “Lots of creatures are born in eggs like.. Basilisks and Chimaera and.. Oh. Did he say winged?” That was probably vital information she should’ve taken note of. “An Occamy or a Dragon or an Ashwinder or a Hippogriff or a Phoenix..” They could stop her at any time before the blonde reeled off every single bird-like creature. In fact she could start on the animal kingdom too if they’d like? She was particularly fond of penguins.

Team Ary, Bry, Emmie = 400 points

Jeopardy was too fast! Emmie hadn't managed to settle in and be happy that Bry welcomed her to join her, and Ary's team for the game before it started. "We'll do great!" Emmie said enthusiastically to her teammates. This was intense. Before Emmie got the chance to think for two seconds Ary had hit the red buzzer, answered the first potion question correctly scoring points for their team. "Way to go Ary!" Emmie chimed with a broad smile. Only one of them could answer for their team on each question so she held her tongue, and waited for the next question. The next question was a creature question that gave her pause. A hippogriff that Ary slapped the buzzer and answered quick as a snitch was one possibility, but didn't ashwinder fit in too snce they were pretty fragile birds?

sweetpinkpixie 01-28-2024 11:43 AM

how about I label properly this time, eh? #TeamAuroraAnnaVera #0

Oh. It really was a magical things, potion making, and not muggle cookied. Oops.

Anna still stood by her suggestion and the collective agreement of the team. Soup made with love tasted heavenly and it really could perform miracles on a mood as well as illness! "...I don't remember a Wiggleworm potion," she whispered to her teammates with a small giggle. "...probably had that before though...if it is what I am thinking of it did NOT taste good at all."

Soup was better, just saying.

Anyway, they were on to the next question and Anna was almost bouncing up and down in her seat in anticipation. Even if they got every single one of these wrong, it was still fun to hear the buzzing sound and just think about all the amazing things they were studying and surrounded by. Aurora knew WAY more about creatures than she did (and hello, she was totally starry-eyed over her Ravenclaw bestie's passion for them) so she was nodding along as Aurora listed off...a lot of possibilities. That's okay! It was a starting point for sure. "Well...all those ARE hatched from eggs," she laughed and tugged on some of her curls a bit. "Winged, proud, and a 24 incubation period...isn't that kind of crazy though? I mean ... chickens take 21 days I heard somewhere ... and there is an animal somewhere that takes 90 days! You know, it's kind of like how some baby animals are born and like...within an hour or something they have already learned to walk but it takes us like...365 DAYS to learn to walk?! Nature sure is amazing, you know? All the variety ... " The Hufflepuffle had completely gotten off track, which was a real shame because she actually KNEW this answer considering she how she had spent some of her summer days. Maybe if she just kept on rambling she would come back around? "I spent a couple of days at the Ashburry-Hawthorne sanctuary helping out with some of the smaller odd jobs and shoveling poop from some of the stalls while others took the bigger creatures out for exercise and grooming and other things. There was a rescued mama hippogriff there TOO and she had just laid an egg the day before and hatched the day I was there and I remember thinking how AMAZING it was that she had just laid her egg yesterday and now her baby was already here!"

Well...she had come back around but she had also neglected to remember that they were in the middle of a trivia game and that there was something tangible to all her creature musing she ought to be doing. Might be up to Captain Vera to steer this ship back on course.

Anna/Aurora/Vera - o points

Of course Aurora didn't need to ask for permission. There was space on the team and her addition was a welcomed one. At the very least, they were certainly a fun triad weren't they? Vera grinned back at her, waving her fingers in greeting but not speaking aloud lest she interrupt any line of thinking any of them might at the moment have been following. Though perhaps the interruption wouldn't have been minded too much either.

Also, as for looking cool and admired? It certainly would not have done anything good to the sixth year's already inflated ego to hear that.

Not getting the potion points made perfect sense to her. Despite all of the work Leo and Vasco had put into her pre-OWLs, clearly nothing had stuck long term. Especially not when she spent the entire summer busy as a bee and with a clear allergy to all things studying. She'd get back into it..... at some point this term. Probably.

But Creatures? That was a class she cared about and was decent in. And thanks to a conversation a few years prior now with Professor Paton, she was very much leaning towards a career associated to such. Though of course, her specification and preference had always been and would probably remain with reptiles. Which is why even though hippogriff was the first thing that came to her mind at the next question posed by Professor Carton, she'd gotten entirely sidetracked by Aurora's mention of a basilisk. It was still perhaps the greatest disappointment of her young life she couldn't have one as a pet, but at least she had Sass. It took her a moment to tune back into Anna's commentary, which sounded like an exciting summer doing some work at a creature sanctuary! But bits of the story also reminded her there was a question to answer, and the valuable story was just solidifying both Aurora suggestion (or one of) and Vera's own earlier thought. "Hippogriff sounds like our winner for this one then! 24 incubation period is crazy but also wouldn't it be nice if that was the turn around time for every creature? Then you don't have to wait as long to meet the little baby! My sister's corn snake took eight weeks. And we had to wait all that time knowing that she was coming but we couldn't meet her." And then they had to wait longer still until Sherbet could safely be brought home.

..... But she was getting sidetracked now as well. With a jolt of remembrance, Ve's hand flew out to slap the button before their time was gone. "What is a hippogriff?" A captain she was not, but at least she remembered before time ran out. Though she felt bad too she had now gotten to beep the buzzer twice when neither of the younger girls had. Lowering her voice, she looked at them both, "One of you should hit it next!" As she pushed it closer to their side of the table.

Clue 3: Spell Ya Later! for 600

Norman paused, observing the students conferring amongst their teammates. When a few answers had come in, he addressed the group again. “Time’s up, The correct answer: ‘What is a hippogriff?’

With a flick of his wand, he tapped the grid. This time the third square in the first column lit up. “Here comes the next clue: Spell Ya Later! For 600 points. For this category, you can give the name of the spell or its incantaction. ‘When cast correctly, this conjuration spell produces a light the same color as the gourd which encases its target’s head.’

After taking a moment to process Norman’s little brain teaser {which only took him a minute thankfully}, the chuckling Dhruv gave their full attention to the game in process. Adjusting themself so that their torso was angled in Ean’s direction, and an ankle resting on a knee, they played along mentally. More chuckling ensued from them because while chicken soup was not the answer to the first question, Dhruv could understand the reasoning behind it. They liked that the kiddos were working together. They liked that Aryan was focused; they even thought they even detected a streak of Aditya’s competitiveness from the boy.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Ary would welcome an opportunity to study with Emma. After all, she was his friend. So all she needed to do was to say the word and together, they could work out the date.

Of course he was correct with the Hippogriff answer. He grinned to himself and braced himself to put on the proverbial thinking cap. Yes, he remembered that he had promised Bry and Emmie that they could have a go at the next question.

“Er… gourd? I think the professor’s referring to a pumpkin?” At least… to Ary’s knowledge a pumpkin spell was the only type that put someone's head in that particular casing. He could be wrong though, but his mind refused to budge from the pumpkin idea. “Maybe it’s one of those Fire Making spells? Because the flames are orange…” The boy shrugged. “I dunno. What do you girls think?”

MadAlice 01-28-2024 11:16 PM

Hope & Emma

Ooooh! Hope knew this one. Because wasn't this gourd native to her own home country? Her hand slammed down on the buzzer before she even consciously decided to do so and she looked nervously over at her partner, Emma, hoping that she was right. Because it would be embarrassing to have gone ahead and be wrong.

"Uh...What is the Melafors Jinx?" she managed to get out, trying to make her voice loud enough to be heard in this big room.

Lottiepot 01-29-2024 10:35 AM

Team AVA - 200 points

OH! OH!

They actually got one correct thanks to Anna’s excellent deduction skills and Captain Vera’s brilliant buzzing. What a fantastic team they were making. The talk of babies coming in 24 hours had the Ravenclaw thinking about her own family. “My Ma was pregnant for a whole NINE months and even then Ander was two weeks late so it was more like nine and a half months and all he can do is drink and cry. But that’s not even the longest pregnancy, Elephants take twenty-two months! At least they can walk though and they’re much cuter than baby humans.” Don’t ask her where she got the information about Elephants from, she did have a habit of watching Muggle nature programmes during the summer holidays. There was something so soothing about the narrator's voice.

The quiz had swiftly moved on thankfully before Aurora could talk any more on the subject. There was a brief flash of concern across the blonde’s face the minute she heard ‘spell’ in that she thought they were about to be subjected to a spelling test. It wasn’t even that she had anything to worry about there either, her spelling was perfectly adequate, but it took her back to primary school where these tests would be sprung on them randomly. Why she thought of spelling before spells was questionable but then there was no point in figuring out where Aurora’s brain would go.

“Gourds are.. pumpkins?” Or pumpkin-like vegetables like marrows? “Do you think when you have a pumpkin on your head you’ll be able to taste it? I don’t think I’ve ever had a pumpkin on its own, only in a pie.” Perhaps leaving the responsibility of buzzing to this girl was not in the best interest of the team.

Was Bry not paying attention or was Aryan just on the top of his A game? Her bestie was so focused he was on fire for their team. "It could have only been a griffy. 'Member when we saw the last one be borns? It was so little!" Well, as little as a baby hippogriff could be. If had been absolutely epic and she had loved every single moment of it. Speaking of which... "Is there anymore new babys being born at the reserve soon?" Griffs or dragons?

As the next question was being given by professor Carton, Bryony was once again mum hing on another handful of mixed nuts and berries. None of which were orange or a gourd buuuut this second year thought she did know the answer to this question! "A gourd is a pumpkin, right? Or something like a pumpkin and pumpkins are orange. And there's a pumpkin spell that can encase someone's head.. only it's a jinx I'm sure." And there wne her hand slapping down on the buzzer confidently. "What is the Pumpkin-Head Jinx?" Fingers crossed that she was correct. Next round Emmie could have a go at giving the answer if she wanted.

MadMadamMalfoy 01-29-2024 11:43 PM

Clue 4: Oh, the Places You'll Go! for 200

Norman caught the chuckle from Dhruv, but he was too focused on the game to acknowledge it. Speaking of the game, the students were doing great so far! He was pleased with the mostly correct answers and even more so with the collaboration between teammates.

After allowing a minute or two, he gave the answer to the third clue, “The correct answer: ‘What is Melofors?’ or ‘What is the Pumpkin-head Jinx?’ Once again, he tapped the grid to his right with his wand. The first square in the fifth column lit up. “Our next clue, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! For 200 points. ‘Splinching is a common and dangerous side effect when this mode of transportation is done incorrectly.’

OOC: Great game so far! Next clue goes up in 16-24 HOURS. ^_^

Bry was absolutely right: the answer could have only been hippogriffs. “Tiny,’’ he agreed, his mind flashing back to the time Bry was referring to. That certainly was not going to be the last time that they would see baby griffs hatching, he was confident about this. “Not sures. Gotta ask dads.” But Ary would let her know as soon as he did!

His bestie was sure about the pumpkin being the only gourd of which witches and wizards had used in this spell creation. He watched her push the buzzer and give her answer. They all just needed Carton to confirm now… and he did! “Way to go, Bry!’’ Ary whispered, reaching for her hand and giving it a squeeze. The team was doing well so far and he was immensely enjoying this.

“The answer to that is definitely Apparation,’’ he said confidently to Emmie and Bry. This was also his way of encouraging one of them to go ahead and give the answer. They were, after all, a team.

Nordic Witch 01-30-2024 05:02 AM

Team Ary, Bry, Emmie= 1,200 points

Emmie was not sure about the answer to the spell question so she was immensly glad that Bry and Ary had an idea. The pumpkin spell; melofors, she had never heard of. Yes she had carved pumpkins at home, but they hadn't used any spells that she could remember. Trying to engage herself in Bry and Ary's convo about baby dragons, and hippogriffs she cut in "Do you guy's have some pictures with you of the baby dragons and hippogriffs? Because I've never seen one in real life. Just the adult ones at the magical zoo." Maybe she could convince auntie Laurel or uncle Aaron to go to the magical zoo or a reservation over the summer?

Anyway focus back on the game. Listening to the next question, Emmie was immediatly sure of the answer just as Ary confirmed it. Looking from Ary to Bry she said I'll answer for us this time. Turning to the big red buzzer she hit it and looked up at Professor Carton and said confidently."What is Apparition?"

Oops. Good thing she hadn't buzzed with that previous answer since it seemed she would have been incorrect. As far as the next question went ... there was a conjuration spell that encased someone's head in a gourd??? Emma stared wide-eyed. She had so much to learn and thank goodness for Hope there buzzing in with that answer!!! Cause she would have had no clue.

But here was a question she actually knew the answer to. Should she wait for Hope to confirm with her since she completely botched the first two questions? Nah, she knew what mode of transportation this one was ....

Slamming her palm on the buzzer thing, she practically burst out ... "Apparition... I mean ... WHAT is Apparition?" Whew. Saved, hopefully with a speedy correction to adding the what.

Clue 5: 'Facts and Figures for 200

Norman's bluish-green eyes scanned the Great Hall. So far, so good… students playing by the rules, remembering to buzz in before answering, and giving answers in the form of a question. Oh? Montmorency's initial answer got a slight eyebrow raise, but she corrected herself. ”I'll accept that answer,” he said, nodding.

Whether or not that answer was correct would have to wait. After allowing ample time for the teams to buzz in, Norman moved on. “The correct answer is, ‘What is Apparition?’ With a flick of his wand, he tapped the grid. The first square in the third column lit up. ”Our next clue: ‘Facts and Figures for 200. ’Once belonging to a Hogwarts founder, this goblin-made magical artifact was instrumental in Harry Potter’s hunt for Horcruxes.’"

“Lots!’’ Ary told Emmie. “I’ll show you somes later.” And since the family Reserve was open to visitors in the form of his friends, providing that Ary ask his fathers first, maybe someday Emmie could visit. He was certain she would be thrilled to see dragons and griffs, both baby and adults, in close-ish proximity.

The Slytherin’s waited quite calmly for Carton to confirm the answer Emmie and the other participants of the quiz had given. Already he was in anticipation of the next question. Which happened to be an easy one too {of course it was, given that it was assigned only two hundred points}.

“It’s Gryffindor’s sword, I believe,’’ Ary told his teammates. The tiara wasn’t goblin-made as far as he could remember… nor was the locket. Nor the cup. Yep, after careful thought, he was sure. "I'm sticking with the sword." He would again allow one of the girls to answer.

Whew! That was a close save on that question. She shoved some dried fruit into her mouth as Professor Carton continued on with the next question about facts and figures. Until a second after she shoved the dried fruit into her mouth she coughed and spat it into a napkin. "Sorry." she murmured quietly to Hope. Was there anything else to eat besides nuts and fruit? Oh, chocolate. She could do with that ....

Er... what was the question? Something about Harry Potter's hunt for horcruxes? "Diadem? Helga Hufflepuff's cup... sorry, i missed the question." She admitted lamely to Hope, hoping she caught it. Stupid dried fruit.

The unfortunate thing was Vera had gotten so distracted by the talk of pregnancies and baby animals and just the overwhelming amount of TIME that went into having to wait for a spawn, that she missed the next couple of questions. Which was really too bad, because between the odditity of the melofors jinx and the current apparition classes she was taking for her license - she KNEW those answers. Which meant they missed some EASY points!! And it was very obvious the trio needed the points where they could get them.

Hearing the next question, she drew herself back to present and NOT thinking about how cute little elephants were, and instead looked at the two younger girls. Captain, her foot. "Um so if it's a founder it's obviously something Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. But like... I don't really REMEMBER what person had what as a relic! I bet Ravenclaw had some type of book but if it's goblin made it's probably written in gobbledy gook and I don't think Harry Potter spoke that? So maybe not Ravenclaw. Slytherin it would be too ironic for it to have been something from the founder that eventually took down the heir so... maybe not that either." She would have remember that, she thought. "I bet it's whatever Hufflepuff's relic is. They're resourceful." She nodded sagely, impressed with her own deductive reasoning as she waited to hear what the girls thought.

Hope's brow wrinkled slightly as she thought for a minute. "No, that's not it--Helga Hufflepuff created her cup herself, I overheard Professor Tapio telling that to some of the Hufflpuffs. In fact...all the Founders created their House artifacts themselves. All except...it must be the sword!" Hope's hand slammed down on the buzzer and she called out excitedly, "What is Godric Gryffindor's sword?"

She sat back, breathing a little hard from the tension and then glanced over at her partner, who seemed to be perpetually hungry. "Look, do you want a biscuit or something?" she whispered to Emma, taking a handkerchief out of her pocket and opening it to reveal about half a dozen ginger biscuits. Hope's mother had impressed on her the importance of always keeping a few emergency rations about her, just in case. Anyway, it was hard to think clearly when you were hungry.

Nod nod. "Uh-huh. Loads and loads." Maybe not as many as Aryan had but who knew for sure? This girl did have a habit of taking photos of the creatures whenever she was there, especially the babies and the ones she was allowed to interact with the most. Just like Ary, she would happily show all the photos to Emmie later on.

At Professor Carton's confirmation of the correct answer to the previous question, Bry beamed at her team. They were seriously rocking this. "Way to go team!" Both of her hands were held up to them for high-fives! It had been the best idea for them to be a team of three.

The next question was given and Aryan was voicing his opinion on the answer like a true pro at the game. Bry grinned at him and nodded her agreement. "I think that's right 'cause wasn't the sword used to help win the war?" She thought it had been. Like it had been used to get rid of some of the Horcruxes, right? "Wasn't the other house items all destroyed too? So I say we should go with the sword." With another nod of her head, the blonde tapped her hand down on the buzzer. "What is Gryffinfor's sword?"

Norman paused, looking around the Great Hall as he waited for students to buzz in with their answers. He overheard Montmorency's cough but chose not to acknowledge it. A quick glance at his watch told him that thr meeting time was running short.

”The correct answer was, ’What is the Sword of Gryffindor?’ Any variation of that wording was accepted, as long as the answer contained ”Sword” and ”Gryffindor” somewhere. ”We have time for a few more questions. Next clue…” Her tapped the grid, and the fifth square in the sixth column lit up. ”Pop Goes the Weasel! For 1000: ’Released in 1937, this Disney fairytale was the first feature-length animated movie produced in the United States.’

OOC: Sorry for the delay... yesterday was crazy! We'll have 1 or 2 more questions after this and move on the the prize selection this weekend. Next clue in 16-24 HOURS. ^_^

Team: Ary/Bry/Emmie ; Points: 1,600

Yes, their team was doing well though Ary wished some of the other teams would be a little more competitive. It was more enjoyable, in his opinion, if each team were this way. But anyway… go, team! as Bry had said. “Yeah, I think it was Neville Longbottom that used it to kill Nagini.” Did you know that ‘Nagin’ was the Hindi word for snake? Yep, it was. Anyway. Bry buzzed in again with her answer and… it was correct! Ary grinned at Emmie and Bry. Surely they felt as thrilled as he did?

The next question wasn't that easy for him. Sure, Ary knew all about Muggle fairy tales, even down to the ancient movies as he had grown up watching them; the Muggle world was a huge part of his life, after all. “Erm… it’s either Cinderella or… Bambi? No, that’s not a fairy tale. Is it? Snow White. Erm…” Ary tapped his chin thoughtfully. “I think Snow White was the first…” Yes, that was it, he was sure. After all, hadn’t he watched the fairytale movies in order of their release?

“I got it,’’ the boy told his team mates. And he buzzed in. “What is Snow White and the Seven Dwarves?”

Hope just sat and stared at Carton. She had no clue about this one. She'd never seen an animated movie, or any move. And... who or what was Disney, anyway?

She leaned over to Emma and whispered, "Do you know this one? I have no idea."

Kalie was late, so sue her. No, actually, don't because those things could get messy and she wasn't about mess (when it involved her, anyway). Also because her lateness wasn't exactly her fault, Peeves had struck! She snuck into farthest seat back while still being close to the group, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible and poured herself a cup of tea. No coffee for her this late in the day, thank you.

*Bzzzz* "What is Steamboat Wille?" Was she correct? Kalie didn't really know, she remebered it was the first something though. And yes, she had completely missed the 'fairy tale' part of the clue.

Clue 7: Now We're Cookin'! for 800

Norman noticed Gellar’s arrival out of the corner of his eye. Not at all fussed by the girl’s late arrival, he nodded in lieu of a verbal greeting so as not to break the other players’ concentration between questions.

He didn’t expect everyone to get this question correct. It was one of the more difficult clues, and it was a Muggle Studies question, a subject in which not everyone was well-versed. Still he was impressed with the students’ effort and creative answers. “The correct answer: ‘What is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?’ he said after a few moments’ pause. He tapped the grid with his wand, illuminating the fourth square in the fourth column. “Here’s our next clue: Now We’re Cookin’! for 800 points, ‘Gold in color and notoriously difficult to brew, inventor Zygmunt Budge considered this potion the crowning achievement of his career.’

OOC: 16-24 HOURS to answer this question. The final clue of the game goes up tomorrow! ^_^

Ooh... She knew partnering with Hope was a good thing!!! The girl came prepared with biscuits! "Yes please..." her eyes lighting up with delight, as she took two from the handkerchief. Hoping she didn't mind. "Thank you." Munching on one, she'd been thinking about the disney movie and just as she was about to buzz an answer in, it seemed she'd run out of time. Oh well.

The next question though. She didn't recall the names of inventors, but she did know colours. Gold in colour and difficult to brew. "That's gotta be liquid luck ... no? Do we need the actual name?" It was Felix something or other. Note to self: next time accidentally stumble into a quiz game, bring biscuits.

For what it was worth and how many students were actually playing, Bry thought that most of them were doing fairly well. There was nothing wrong with being competitive, she had her moments of being very deeply competitive but those times typically fell upon the times that she was training. However maybe if she put some of that ninja competitiveness into her schooling... anyhow...

"I thinks it was too. Super cool of him to stands up to a snake so large and dangerous like that to help everyone." Bryony gave Neville Longbottom mega props for that but it also always made her sad to think about the Nagini because it hadn't been the snakes fault that she was how she was. The young blonde did know this! Why she knew this was for two reasons, her love of snakes, thanks to her mama and always being around them since she had been born. Annnnnnd obviously Aryan most likely had told her. Many things she knew she had learned from him.

Just like the answer to that question! With her love of movies and how many Ary and her and watched together growing up, (Disney movies being on that list thanks to her) she hadn't been sure of this one. They had watched so so many of them and sometimes they got a little jumbled up in her head. Unless they were the ones she loved most. The bestie seemed sure once again though, so with a firm nod of her head and a smile at Emmie too, she watched the buzzer get hit. When Professor Carton said it was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bry gave Ary a quick squish. "You dids it!"

It was time for another question and this time Bry was sure she knew this one. Maybe. She might not be the greatest in Potions buuuuuut she had kinda helped Logan study a little bit for his OWLs last term! She had used 'helping' him study as a way of spending time with him, tossing out random questions at him from time to time on various subjects. It had actually be kinda fun and she had learned a fair bit too! "I think I know this one," she looked between Ary and Emmie. "Not many potions are gold in color.. but Liquid Luck is and Logan tolds me it is really difficult to brew correctly." Nod nod. What did they both think?!

Ary was in agreement with Bry. It most certainly was brave of Neville to stand up to a great, large snake like Nagini. He wasn’t going to lie… Bry definitely liked snakes more than he did, even if he was a creatures guy. He wouldn’t be surprised if at one point she brought along a few to stay at the Reserve.

Phew!

The boy was relieved that his answer was correct. He grinned happily as Bry squished him and he returned it with a couple of pats on her hand. But the next question had him thinking hard. “I’m not sure either,’’ he told his teammates. Too bad he hadn’t inherited Adi’s vast array of knowledge on Potions. “We could have a go and answer Felix Felicis. I’m good with that.”

Well, Hope thought, if she didn't do well on the quiz, at least she'd had a chance to brighten someone's day. "Help yourself, then. I always carry a little food in my pockets, in case something happens and you really need it, you know?"

"Oh, yes! It's called Felix....Felix..." Hope stopped talking and took a deep breath to calm down and think. And just like magic, it came to her once she was calmer. "Felix Felicis," she said, and she knew it was right. She reached over to press on their buzzer and repeated, "What is Felix Felicis?"

Clue 8: 'Facts and Figures for 1000

Norman's bluish-green eyes scanned the Great Hall as he waited for the students to buzz in. He looked at his watch again; they were almost out of time. After a few answers had come in, he revealed the correct answer, “The correct is, ’What is Felix Felicis?’ I'll also accept ’What is Liquid Luck?’

One more time, he tapped the grid to his right with his wand. The fifth square in the third column. ”Now for our final question of the game: ‘Facts and Figures for 1000. ’This eighteenth century British Minister of Magic was responsible for the creation of Azkaban prison.’

OOC: We'll have 16-22 HOURS for this question and move on to the prize selection tomorrow. Thanks for playing! ^_^

No group or individual made it in time to ring in to that but had Ary’s group, they would have been correct with a Felix Felicis answer. He quickly put that behind him and instead focused on the next question. It was one that required him to think for a long time. “Er,’’ he began with a frown. “Was it that Diggory guy? Eldritch Diggory? I know he had something to say about using Dementors to guard Azkaban?” Ary frowned deeply. “No, wait. Azkaban was created before his reign. I think.” Yep, he was having a difficult time recalling what little he knew on British Ministers of Magic. “There was also some dude named Damocles Rowle, he was vocal on the topic as -” The guy snapped his fingers. “I know which one!” He was one hundred percent sure because just last year, Dynah was tasked with writing an essay on Dementors for homework and being the ever helpful little brother, Ary had assisted her with the research; even provided snacks {which came from the elves} while they worked.

The second year buzzed in. “Who is Damocles Rowle?”

That was smart, Emma decided. If nothing else today she learned she should probably try to be a little more prepared. Fortunately though she was correct in thinking about it being liquid luck and it seemed that answer would have been acceptable, though Hope buzzed in just in time with the actual name. Excellent team they were making.

And it seemed there was one final question. Although in true jeopardy wasn't the last question one that they made a wager for? Oh well, time to put on her history of magic hat because the question was about the British Ministers from a long time ago. "Nurmengard ... no wait...that's a place..." She glanced over at Ary's team when she heard their buzzer. Think, Emma. "It wasn't the Diggory guy. He wanted to get rid of Azkaban and have something else ... I don't think it was Parkinson ....although he was the same timeframe. Who was the guy before Parkinson? I think maybe there was someone else ...." She was actually impressed with herself for remembering two of the ministers from that time period.

Game Over! Prize claim starts here ^_^

Norman waited, watching the students as they conferred amongst their teammates. This was one of the more difficult questions, he knew. It came as no surprise when fewer students buzzed in this time around. After allowing a few moments for the students to answer, he addressed the group again, “The correct answer is, ‘Who is Damocles Rowle?’

He rose from the headmaster’s chair, standing beside the glass cabinet. With a flick of his wand, he unlocked the cabinet and opened the door. “That’s the game! Excellent effort, everyone!,” he said. “Take a few minutes to tally your scores and decide which prizes you want. There are four prize levels. Level one prizes on the bottom shelf are worth 200 points each-” He gestured toward the shelf full of school supplies. “Level two prizes on the second shelf are worth 500 points -” He gestured to the shelf above, this one packed with candy. “Level three prizes on the third shelf are worth 1000 points -” He indicated the next shelf up, which was full of creature plushes. “And level four prizes on the top shelf are worth 1500 points each.” He gestured toward the top shelf full of games.

“When you’ve decided what you want, come to the front to claim your prizes,” Norman said. He shot a sidelong glance at Dhruv, as if to ask if his colleague wanted to help hand out the prizes.

OOC: Thanks for playing, everyone! ^_^ The game is officially finished; now it’s time for the teams to pick prizes. Please put your team’s final score in the title of your post when claiming your prize(s). The prize levels are as follows:

Level 1 (school supplies) - 200 points each
Level 2 (candy) - 500 points each
Level 3 (creature plushes) - 1000 points each
Level 4 (games) - 1500 points each

Pics of each prize level are in the top post of the thread. You may make up which prizes your character sees in the cabinet, as long as they fit into the categories listed (e.g. no wizards chess set on the Level 1 shelf, etc.) You have 48-72 HOURS to claim prizes!

Point totals apply to each person on the team. Example: if a team of 3 earns 1800 points, each member can use 1800 points rather than dividing the points 3 ways for 600ppints per person. ^_^

Yes, Dhruv was quite ready to help handing out those prizes. They rose from their chair, and as they did so, shot Ean a questioning look. Did the Charms professor want to join them or…? Either way, they were now heading over to Norman’s glass cabinet. Sure, they knew what the Transfiguration professor had offered up as prizes but excuse them as they cast a proper gaze over them all. “I approve of your prize options, Norman. Do I get anything for helping out?” Dhruv was joking, of course.

“That’s… three thousand, six hundred points,’’ Ary told his team mates after doing the math and double checking it. He was quite impressed with the total they had put up. “So what do you two want? I’m thinking a Gobstones set maybe… for Dy.” His sister would love that even though she already had a set, he knew it. So yes, he was going to get that Hufflepuff another Gobstone set; it would also serve as a display of his belief that she could be a champion player like their dad someday.

Bummer! Their team hadn't managed to buzz in an answer for one of the questions and lost out on some serious points. She couldn't be too upset however had they gotten it, she actually would've been correct. It was a pretty tough question too. So she was proud of herself for at least knowing the answer and now it was something she was going to remember.

What mattered even more was that Ary knew the answer to the next and final question! This of course earned him the brightest of smiles and a squeeze of the hand. "You got another one!" Her bestie was brilliant! "That's a lot. I didn't think we had that much." They had gotten nearly every question though so it made sense they had a good amount of points.

Prizes? Ermmmm... Bryony grinned widely at Aryan's choice. The way he constantly thought of others warmed her heart. "She's gonna love that, Ary." Dy would be thrilled with another setof Gobstones even if she didn't use this one. Bry thought it was a lovely gesture to his big sister to show how much he supported her. "I'm kinda thinking about that one.. we can share if you wants ta." The small blonde was clearly pointing at none other than the hippogriff stuffie. Falkor needed a friend up on her bed in the dorm room."What about you, Emmie?" What had caught her eye?

Hope (of H&E): 2000 points minus 1900 = 100 left over

Hope went over to the prize shelves to look more closely, especially at the creature plushies. They were beautiful! And looked so soft. Hope had never really had a real, store-bought toy like this before; all her dolls and such were homemade by one of her family (though she did love them nevertheless). But she really wanted a stuffed phoenix...Then her eyes strayed to the next shelf, with all the games. A Wizarding chess set! They were very impressive-looking. But Hope also noticed the other games--her brothers and sisters would enjoy playing one of those very much during the cold winter evenings. Hope could picture it in her mind...

Then she remembered --she wasn't sure she even wanted to go home after she left school. Maybe she wanted to be a sophisticated young lady in the greater Wizarding world, instead of stuck in a pokey little isolated village. Oh bother! She was only 14 years old, how could she be expected to know what she would do so far in the future? And she did love her family. But the games were 1500 points, and she only had 2000, so she couldn't get a plushie and a game both. In the end, though she looked a little longingly at the stuffed phoenix, Hope decided to get the Exploding Snap game.

That was 1000 points, so she had 1000 left. Hmmm...those school supplies were attractive. All those quills and different colors of ink. Hope would have liked to have gotten one of each color, but in the end she picked a blue quill and a bottle of blue ink, to show a little Ravenclaw pride (she'd never felt smart enough to be a Ravenclaw, but she had answered a lot of the questions right today, so who knew? Maybe she'd grow into it by seventh year). So, that was 200 for the pen and 200 more for the ink, and that made 1900 points. She had 100 left, but none of the prizes were 100, so she turned to her partner, Hope. "Do you want to use my last 100 points?"

MadMadamMalfoy 02-10-2024 03:02 PM

Dhruv's joke got a soft chuckle from Norman. ”Maybe… if there's anything left,” he replied, likewise joking, although truthfully he wouldn't mind sharing with his colleagues. He had no use for most of these prizes himself. ”Glad you approve!”

He stood by the glass cabinet, handing out prizes to each student as they approached, starting with Atreyu-Rehman's gobstones set. [B]”Congratulations, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman. This was well-earned,” he said. “You too, Miss Paton.”

As he handed Paton the hippogriff plush, he noticed Archard eyeing the phoenix on the same shelf. He was mildly surprised when she chose the Exploding Snap game and some school supplies instead, though he didn't show it. ”There you are, Miss Acrhard,” he said as he gave her the game, blue quill, and blue ink she requested. The color choice got a knowing smile from him; he understood Ravenclaw pride. ”Congratulations on a game well played!"

Making a quick mental note to keep that phoenix and the other leftover plushies for another activity, he looked out at the group once more, searching for any stragglers. ”Last call for prize selection!” he called. ”Once you have your prizes, you're free to go. Great game, everyone! Enjoy your weekend!”

OOC: Sorry for the delay… rl threw me a curveball the past 2 days. >_< If you haven't had a chance to post, you may headcanon your character's prize selection. I'll leave the thread open for another 12-24 HOURS for those who want to post their character leaving and/or picking prizes. Thanks for playing! ^_^

2000+100 (maybe) - 1000 -500 - 400 = 200 left

That last question ....... Emma just stared in shock ... Yea, she definitely didn't know or remember that one. But she was still impressed with their final total of 2000 points and it seemed like they got some cool prizes to choose from, as Hope went for an exploding snap game and two of the school supplies, before offering her the remaining 100 points. She wasn't sure if things would add up for her to pick out something with 2100 points since it didn't seem like things really added up that way. But maybe she could ... actually, if her math was correct she could one level three prize, one candy, and three things from the school supply. Maybe she'd give an extra thing to Hope, since she'd given her some extra points.

She could also do one of the games and three things from level one. Did she need another plushie? At twelve years old, the wizard chess or exploding snap game sounded cool and all and maybe she'd make more friends cause one could always use more friends. But maybe she could also share the exploding snap game with Hope, and switch back and forth with ownership of that and one of the plushies ... Although Hope was a Ravenclaw and maybe it would be complicated to share games and stuffies with someone way in the towers. She should get what she wanted. "One stuffed unicorn..." she was tempted by the stuffed snake, but went for unicorn instead. Because well, unicorns were just like cool and all. "A box of fizzing whizzbees. A quill and some pink ink...." She looked towards Hope. "Do you want to get another color of the ink or maybe one of these journals?"
