The magic running through Kappas made them incredibly strong; this was also aided by its head full of water. Therefore, spells would not work against it just then. The lights aimed at it simply dispersed; the spells were useless.
Think again, young Hufflepuff!
Though the spells did distract the Kappa for a moment, they weren’t enough to keep it that way for long!
"Oh no!" Maria blurted out with wide-eyes when it was clear that her leg locker spell hadn't had the desired effect on the sea monkey. Sure, it distracted the Kappa, but only momentarily which wouldn't give her the needed time to pass to the next obstacle. Maria thought hard if she bowed like she was supposed if facing a hippogriff would that work on a Kappa too? Not sure if she wanted to find out either or she retreated to her original plan. "Accio cucumber!" she casted firmly, her eyes not leaving the Kappa.
Maria was not getting attacked by surprise if she could help it. She waited many tense minutes before she saw a cucumber in the air flying towards her. Fetching it from out of the air she quickly casted "Scribere!" writing her name on the cucumber before calling over to the Kappa. "Mr Kappa, I've got a treat for you." Without waiting to get it's attention Maria tossed the cucumber to the kappa. Please let this work or she was running out of options.

Desiree watched Mr. Kappa, prepared to act if he made a move toward her. Fortunately, that wasn’t necessary. Her cucumber had done the trick! She smiled to herself as she watched the kappa eating the vegetable, but there wasn’t time to linger. She had many more obstacles to finish.
She made her way to the next obstacle, starting with the tunnel. Getting down on her hands and knees, she started crawling through the tunnel, keeping an eye on her surroundings all the while. If this obstacle was anything like the last one, she half-expected something to pop out at any moment. Well, if that happened, she was going to be prepared!

The lizard was in fact a moke. This meant it could not only shrink down to tiny sizes at will.. but also grow again at random to block your path! Remember this is Professor Paton's obstacle, so you are correct in the thoughts of NOT having to create a handbag out creature today. There is also no need to shrink yourself as you fit perfectly fine through the tunnel, yes?
However that very curious moke seems to want to play, growing large again before shrinking and growing once more. Surely it's getting in the way now of you completing the course. Maybe you can make it move or perhaps.. take it along this part of the course with you?

Barely in the tunnel and there is indeed something in your way. It started off small but the silver-green lizard quickly grew to around ten or so inches in size effectively blocking the inside of the tunnel and anyway for you to continue to get through! What type of lizard is this? What are you meant to do with it? Aawww, look at it crawling along the tunnel now like it knew the way to go.

With the path cleared for you to head onto obstacle two, the first thing waiting for you is the tunnel. Before Maria could even make it inside the tunnel there was a silver-green lizard about the size of her palm sitting at its entrance ready to greet her. Or was there? For now it has shrink down so small it was hardly there! Where had it gone? Was it still inside the entrance to the tunnel or maybe it had gone inside of it? What type of lizard is that and why is it here?

Was is it wrong of Emma to step to the back of the line so she could go last? As soon as she heard obstacle course, while some of her was eager to get started, as one of the youngest present, the Hufflepuff figured watching her peers was all the more wiser.
Approaching the pond once the last person before her had taken some time, the blond simply waited, spinning her wand slightly between her fingers in anticipation and trying to think of what creatures might be present in their little obstacle course.

The Kappa was not leering, however, it was staring as it calculated shrewdly how best to attack its victim. It could see she was not yet an adult human so maybe… maybe she was not so much knowledgeable on how to deal with its kind.
And so it slowly made its way towards her, still quite observing her for any unexpected moves. Oh, it quite ignored her bow.
Hmmm...okay, apparently bowing didn't work as well as they made it sound in the books. And she was pretty sure she didn't have a cucumber, although she usually had some bits of food tucked into her pockets, just in case. Feeling around, Hope was momentarily excited to feel a longish, circular object, but, on drawing it out, discovered it was just a sausage (a rather delicious looking sausage, but this was probably not a good time for a snack). Then an idea occurred to her and, as she wondered how easy a Kappa might be to fool, Hope backed up a little and turned away for a few seconds, just long enough to transfigure the sausage into a cucumber. Turning back, she eyed the Kappa (which looked uncomfortably closer) and hastily carved her name on the newly-made vegetable.
"Catch!" she called out, and lobbed the cucumber out into the lake in the kappa's general direction.

The Kappa would have said no in reply to Emma’s question. Had it known or understood what she was saying, obviously. In all honesty, which human would want to face a menace such as this water demon?
This time around, the Kappa made itself known quite quickly by rising out of the water. Ah, a small human. She shouldn’t be difficult to overpower at all. Hopefully she at least put up a small fight.

Perhaps bowing would have worked on a younger, less experienced Kappa. This one was far from that. The human’s attempt at that can be appreciated, however.
The object falling into the pond distracted the Kappa, especially since it smelt so green and earthy. It knew at once what that was. Cucumber! The water demon hastened after its next feast, leaving the path clear for Hope to rush onto the next obstacle.
In the meanwhile, the Kappa would devour the vegetable.

Okay, so the moke was blocking the exit to the tunnel, but it also looked like it wanted to play with him? Maybe he could trick it into shrinking again, or playing some sort of game with it... the problem was that he'd never done that before, and was unsure what mokes liked.
First, Brandon reached a hand out to try and tickle or pet the moke. Maybe that would convince it to shrink back down? If that didn't work, he planned to conjure or summon some plants for the moke to eat, and try to get it to move with food like a regular lizard. He hoped his plans would work! To be honest, he'd never seen or interacted with a moke before.

The moke didn't move at all. Not even a fraction of an inch. At least, not until Brandon reached out and touched it. That was when it leaped up into the air straight onto the Hufflepuff's arm and scampered its way onto the boys shoulder! This may not have been the reaction you wanted buuuuuuuut it was out of the way for now. So best hurry on along the rest of this part of the course before it tries to block your path once more!

Desiree hadn’t made it far into the tunnel when she noticed a silvery-green lizard in her path, small at first but growing quickly. She knew instantly what it was: a moke! She smiled, thinking of the moke she met and named in a previous lesson. She’d have to remember to visit Minnie before she graduated!
For now, she focused on the moke ahead of her. “Hello there,” she whispered, giggling softly as she watched the little creature crawling along. “Are you going to lead the way?” She followed along, keeping a close watch on her new little friend.

Truthfully, Brandon didn't know what to expect as he played with the moke. He flinched a little when it decided to climb on him, but was relieved that it seemed to be happy and out of the way. Plus, it was kind of cute sitting on his shoulder like that, and he had to smile at least a little bit at the friendly creature.

The content of the trunk gave it an extra dramatic shake for added measure as Brandon approached. It sensed the human’s presence and very soon there would be more than just the presence to feed.
No matter whether Brandon opened the trunk or not; the object simply popped open. Would you faint, freeze or react in your own defense? For before you, just looming out of the trunk was your worst fear.
It's onto the next part of the obstacle course for you. Try not to be too surprised as you approach the tunnel and there's nothing at all there blocking your way. Good for you! Hope was momentarily distracted by the hem of her robe getting caught in something sharp near the mouth of the tunnel, so she didn't see the strange lizard until she was nearly nose to nose with it. Oh! Why, this must be...must be a moke! How exciting to meet one in person! And from what Hope remembered, they didn't do anything particularly threatening, except that it was supposed to be able to shrink in size. That would make it particularly difficult to catch! Fortunately, Hope wasn't being asked to catch one, just to get by it and out of the tunnel. Making it shrink would make that a deal easier, she decided, and reached out a finger to stroke its back as it scurried by her (besides, she was longing to touch it!)
Brandon hadn't even touched the trunk yet when it popped open- wait, he wasn't ready to know what his greatest fear was! But deep down, he had a guess... He stared in horror as his older sister fell limply out of the trunk and onto the ground, nearly forgetting that it was a dark creature and not actually her. It looked just like her... only significantly less okay.
Brandon scrunched his eyes shut for a moment, and pulled out his wand to start trying to cast Riddikulus. Only- his brain felt blank. What was he supposed to be- he needed a healing spell!! Wait no, it was just a boggart- But what was something he found funny?? "Ri- Ri... Uhm..."
Brandon looked frantically over to the professors for help, panicking more than a little bit. He knew how to cast the spell he was supposed to use, he really did... it was just that it felt impossible when he was faced with his worst fear and his heart was beating way too quickly.

If Desiree thought the moke would speak back to her, she was sadly mistaken. Her new creature friend could not speak with words (how cool would it have been if it could?) but what it could do was continue to scurry along through the tunnel right ahead of the seventh year. At the very end of the tunnel the moke grew as large as it could before shrinking down a few inches once more and leaping right on up to rest on Desiree's head comfortably. She didn't mind give this little cutie a ride through the remainder of this part of the course, did she? Hurry along before the moke changes its mind and tries to block your path again.

With the kappa distracted with the cucumber Maria wasted no time to escape past the pond towards the next obstacle; a tunnel. A dark tunnel could just be a tunnel she had to walk through, but she somewhow doubted that it was just that easy. Spotting a small silver-green lizard at the tunnel entrance Maria stopped to greet it. "Hello little silver one, are you here to stop anyone from entering or are you my own personal guide forward?" Not waiting for an answer from the lizard she supposed was kind, she mumbled "Lumos duo!" so that she had light as she headed into the tunnel. Maria didn't want to meet any possible lurking creatures without seeing clearly.

“Good to be here, ” Nadia remarked at Professor Khanna’s greeting. Outside like Hope had mentioned. The weather is finally getting warm not to mention the activity to bring some excitement into the day. With a quick wave of her own back at her aunt’s greeting, the Gryffindor turned her full attention to the defense professor as the games were about to begin. Well, the obstacle course that the two adults had set up that is. Groovy! Four obstacles with four creatures, or at least four different types of creatures and they would be going in individually to see if they could remember what they had learned.
She had this.
Nadia patiently waited as they lined up and her fellow students got their chance to go before her into the course. Finally, it was her turn and she stepped inside, her wand drawn and ready but still at her side. The fourth-year girl coming soon enough to the shallow pond that marked the first obstacle. The sight of what she was greeted with made her try and think of the options of what creature was to be her first challenge, her wand raising slightly to be prepared to react.

Brandon looked frantically over to the professors for help, panicking more than a little bit. He knew how to cast the spell he was supposed to use, he really did... it was just that it felt impossible when he was faced with his worst fear and his heart was beating way too quickly.
The Boggart, in the form of Brandon’s sister, may have looked far more terrifying than Brandon’s imagination. Sister dearest did not stay on the ground for too long. Leering, she got to her feet and began inching towards Brandon. But what did he think? Such a frugal attempt would stop her?
A crease crossed Dhruv’s forehead. True to their mental note of paying a tad more attention to Brandon, they had been doing just that. The Hufflepuff had done swimmingly with the first two obstacles, as had most of the students. However, the panicky expression they were now witnessing that was etched on Brandon’s face told them that Brandon was finding this particular obstacle too overwhelming. Rather than rush in, Dhruv thought it fit to give the student one more chance to not give up on himself. “Breathe,’’ they mouthed. Surely Brandon had not forgotten the Concentration Meditation technique that had been taught a few terms back?

By now, the Kappa was growing quite weary of being outsmarted by a gang of little witches and wizards. So depending on Nadia’s plan of action, she may have to work somewhat quicker to beat the water demon for it was quite impatient to emerge victorious soon. That was also why it broke the surface of the watery depths almost immediately it heard and sensed Nadia’s approach.
It was also why it was now moving in her direction in an agile manner.

This is where it sat, staring at her with its beady eyes. Maybe it wanted something? Could this be the creature your meant to encounter and the task is much simpler than you thought?

Oh my goodness! Hope had never thought to have such luck as to have a moke sit on her shoulders! She stood up carefully, trying not to dislodge it, and went on to carefully scramble over the teeter-totter, which was a contraption she wasn't familar with, but which surely couldn't be worse than crossing the creek on the teetery old log back home. Amazingly, the moke was still with her on the other side, where she gracefully managed the run through the tires. And now...the trunk was before her. Hope knew this couldn't be just an ordinary trunk, not at Hogwarts, so she approached with caution. "Be careful!" she whispered to Jerry, which was what she'd named the moke somewhere along the way. "If things get too dangerous, make yourself small and run like blazes!"

Brandon honestly couldn't tell whether it was worse to see his "sister" not move at all or to see her move like THAT, but either way he was not handling it well. Deep breaths? Never heard of them. He clearly wasn't practicing meditation, either. He mostly looked like he was practicing not running away. Sorry Professor Khanna... he'd never faced a boggart really, and in the moment it felt like he was forgetting all the material.
Brandon gripped his wand tight, reminding himself that it was only a boggart and that everyone was just fine... "Riddikulus," he muttered, trying to visualize Big Bird from that one muggle show for little kids. It was the first thing that came to mind, though he wasn't sure he had it in him to laugh.

The content of the truck knew not nor cared whom the human was talking to. All it knew was that it wanted to terrify her. And so that plan would be carried out. Unable to contain itself, it burst rather ferociously out of its prison. But just what was it? Nothing much, just…

The human didn’t like the way it moved? How did he like it now if it moved like a zombie, its arms outstretched, dragging its feet while making horrendous sounds? Was that more terrifying? The Boggart just knew that it couldn’t wait to renew its energy by feeding off more terror that it would elicit from this human.
Especially since he made such a feeble attempt to get rid of his ‘sister’. The Boggart simply continued to mock Brandon while feeding off of the fear.
Brandon had nothing at all to be apologetic for. Keeping one’s cool during strenuous situations did not always come naturally to everyone; sometimes practice was needed. And this was exactly what this situation was giving Brandon. Dhruv’s hand twitched to perform non verbal magic that would get rid of the Boggart and allow Brandon to be free from it but they resisted.
“One more try,’’ the muttered, encouraging the Hufflepuff in their own way.
Could Brandon really be blamed for not wanting to do anything that might hurt his "sister"? It took effort for him to think of the boggart as a dark creature that was toying with him, and not as a family member that needed love and protection. He just wanted to help her- it- the thing, because Brandon was built to help things.
Nevertheless, he also wanted to make his teachers proud of him, and not look like a failure to all the other students, and also not get eaten by a zombie. "R-Riddikulus. Riddikulus. Riddikulus..." He was trying his very best, but he wasn't doing very well at all, and he felt more and more helpless as the thing moved closer to him. Whether or not the boggart turned into the friendly yellow bird, Brandon was already sort of fainting-
...Sorry, Professor Khanna... Looking at the boggart was just too much for him (this time, at least).
