For those who belong in Hufflepuff House, in the middle of the Great Hall is where your table awaits. Gold banners containing an embroidered black badger float above the polished table in honour of the loyal Helga Hufflepuff. Already placed on the tables are silver plates with accompanying cutlery and goblets. All that is missing right now are the mountains of food and pitchers containing your favourite beverages.
Though your stomach might be growling as you take a seat on one of the long benches next to the table, it is important to not get hangry -- gnawing your arm away or jabbing your fork repeatedly on the surface of the table will do no good whatsoever. Give everyone some time to get settled in and wait for Headmaster Winterbottom to deliver his speech. Keep yourself preoccupied by catching up with your fellow housemates or those who are visiting from the other tables until it is time to sink your teeth into the hearty and delicious meal prepared by the house-elves.
Sixth year was here, and Maria followed the floating black badger banner over to the Hufflepuff table. Pushing some of her dark curls out of her face she took a seat in the center of the table. Seating herself down she took some time to study the staff dais to see if there were any staff changes, but most of the professors she liked were accounted for. It was a relief which made her turn her attention back to her own empty table. Hopefully someone would join her soon or this was going turn out to be a very long, and boring feast. A sixth year was supposed to show good example, but would prof DeVries be very angry with her if she unleashed a firework or two?

Second year!!!! She watched the sorting happening, kind of mixed reviews that she didn't get to do it all over again but also glad that she got to just sit and relax. Emma plopped down at the badger table, realizing she had all this time before the feast began to look around the Great Hall in wonder. She also probably should have eaten more than a few sweets on the long train ride because if food didn't arrive soon, she might interrupt with some stomach rumbles.
She glanced around for the new sortees to bide her time, not surprised to see that girl Eliza over at the Slytherin table. Of course brother and father were Slytherins, so she had nothing against them, but still unsurprising.
"Hey Maria ... You ready for another year?" She frowned as she didn't see her mentor Desiree, hoping the girl was still coming... she didn't graduate, last year, did she?? No, she was sure that she had one more year with her... if not, well, she'd just have to owl.

After his sorting, Alfie RAN to the Hufflepuff table. Well, no, he didn't run, but he did walk very quickly with his eyes glued to the ground until he made it. As if the whole ordeal hadn't been embarrassing enough, people were cheering and clapping and it made him want to disappear.
So when he did make it to his house table, his face was a brilliant red and his hair was stuck to his moist forehead. Seeing the Hufflepuffs already present (one of which he had met on the train), he offered them both the best smile he couldn't manage under current circumstances and waved sheepishly before clambering up onto the bench.
How he wished he could be sat with Mia.
But now it was time to watch for Brooks' sorting. Please be Hufflepuff. Please be Hufflepuff. Please be Hufflepuff.
He crossed his fingers and toes and shut his eyes tightly in order to wish as hard as he could.
Please be Hufflepuff.

She was exuberant and lively tonight. Perhaps it was all the candy and sweets she took in during the train ride up. That was would be a sugar crash waiting to happen for later that she will have to fight off because it was the first night back to Hogwarts and Paige would like to stay up to the wee hours of the morning catching up with all her friends in her dorm.
She cheered loudly and happily for the first sorting of the night. One more for the Badgers. It felt good to get the first sortee. The human niffler greedily rubbed her palms together as he came toward the table. An audible gasp escaped her lips at his appearance. "You gotta fix your hair, friend." She spoke in a fake Brooklyn accent as that was the accent she settled on for tonight. She took another glance at the younger boy and chuckled. He needed to also fix how red his face getting. It was as red as a ripe tomato. Perhaps she should be a bit less forward about his appearance. "Sorry. Nevermind that. You look Great... Welcome to Hufflepuff. I'm Paige." She extended a hand out to him enthusiastically.
Leigh didn't have any personal stakes in this term's sorting ceremony, so she was much less bothered by the night's proceedings than two years ago when it was hers, Hunter's, and Mason's sortings, and last year when it was Charlie's. This allowed her the luxury of merely existing; she was comfortably seated beside Mason, eager to eat and have a good night's sleep.
When the first of their new housemates joined them, the third year perked up a little. The Adair boy had been at St. Woboldo's with them, albeit a couple years younger, but it was nice to see him here all the same. "Hey," Leigh greeted Alfie as he joined them nearby. "You went to St. Woboldo's, right?" She knew he did, but she didn't want to come on too strong in case he didn't remember the Upstead quadruplets. The older girl, Paige, got a smile from Leigh, too.

"I-" What was wrong with his hair? Alfie's eyes widened as his hand shot straight up to the mess on his head. It was so ... wet. When did that happen? It must have been sometime between the boats and the sorting ceremony because he had stepped onto land completely dry. He had double checked. He was really worried about falling out of the boat. He had heard stories, okay?
It was all the more confusing when the older girl went back on her words and changed her mind. Between that, her incredibly strong american accent, and the way she looked ready to combust with overpowering energy, Alfie didn't know what to focus on. "I'm thanks," he offered in return.
"I-I I mean thanks," for saying he looked great and, "I'm Alfie." Which ... maybe she already knew seeing as he had just been sorted. Seeing her hand, he took his own out of his hair to offer in return, but paused when he realized how gross and ... warm it was after having been nested in his sweaty locks.
... So instead of giving it to her, which he was too embarrassed to do, he quickly redirected and used it to point straight across the Great Hall towards the Slytherin table. "That's my sister, Mia." His features softened immediately, seeing her sitting tall and waving. In all the commotion, he had forgotten to look for her, which is something he was supposed to do. Often. Because even in the most stressful of times, Mia always brought a sense of calm over his heart and his head. She was made of magic like that.
It's no wonder everyone wanted to be her friend. They wanted to be around that kind of magic too. Alfie couldn't blame them and, really, he liked sharing if it meant other people got to appreciate Mia for all her glory too. She deserved that. Maybe Paige knew Mia? Then they could talk about her for the rest of the night. Because for a boy with very few words, he could sure talk about his big sister endlessly. She's starstuff.

Alfie looked up and smiled when he heard the gentle voice greeting him. He nodded, yes, he did go to Woboldo's. "I remember you," he offered quietly, his voice a genuine, saccharine thing. "And your family," he added as an after thought. So that she knew he wasn't making things up. Though they were older, there were so many of them. And as Alfie did a great deal of people watching and surrounding-absorbing, he had paid attention to them. Not in a creepy way. He just liked seeing other kids with their siblings. It made him feel light and stuff. "Are they Hufflepuffs too?" He asked sheepishly, trying to keep the worry out of his voice.
There were too many things to feel all at once, but. But he knew it was going to be hard without Mia in his house and. And just. Yeah.

New year, new Anna! Well, ONE new thing as far as this bouncy Hufflepuffle was concerned and THAT was currently catching the glitz and glam from the flickering flames adoring the Great Hall to give the left side of her nose a prismatic glow. It was ALMOST like her nostril was a prism, but that wasn't REALLY the case...though she did think that it would be super cool to be able to shoot rainbows out her nose instead of the OTHER stuff it produced whenever she caught a cold...and simply a vibe Anna was projecting and manifesting as she skipped serpentine with curls galore over to the Huffflepuffle table.
Not that she ever put all THAT much thought into nasal discharges, for the record, and certainly not tonight when the Hogwarts house elves outdid themselves every start-of-term with their scrumdiddlyumptious spread of delights.
And SPEAKING of delights, the fifth year was not to be seen without her own addition to the table. From rainbow cookies, to rainbow seeds (also known as a Muggle candy called Skittles), to rainbow stationary and bubbles to this evening and her latest offering: RAINBOW ROCK CANDY! Yes, it was a bit of a self indulging offering this year since the real root of the inspiration was a taaaaaaaaaaad less about embracing and celebrating the different shades of human nature and the colorful spectrum that each of her peers brought to the rainbow that was Hogwarts and more to do with the silver hoop enhanced with rainbow glass beads that hugged her left nostril. BUT, in her charitable defense, she had
been thinking about her peers, fellow Hufflepuffles, and friends she would seek out later to give their rock candies too while she was individually wrapping them and tying white ribbons (all to varying degrees of success and some just flat out elaborate knots) along the stick to keep the wrapping on securely.
"Hi Maria! Hi Emma! Hi Paige! Hi Leigh! Hi Mason! Welcome back to Hogwarts offiiiiiiiiiciaaaally!" she greeted while skipping on by and plopping one of her gifts in front of each on their currently unoccupied plates. She was hoping to rope Paige and the rest of the roomies into a spa night once they were back in their dormroom and settled with bed assignments and the like because she had a TON of new stuff to pretend to know what to do with. Mum had taken her shopping, you see, and just like with the make up kit she had been gifted last year...Anna had bestowed upon her more beautifying creams and salves and other things she did not yet know the word for but would know soon enough to try and figure out. Anna may have also made some purchases of her own, related and unrelated to the beauty industry, and had once again neglected to buy the required textbooks for her classes this term. Oh well and c'est la vie! "And a huuuuuuuge Hufflepuffle welcome to YOU," she chirped while skipping to a stop beside the newest addition to their house. Naturally, Anna offered him one of the rock candies with a wide smile and pulled at the constellations of freckles that covered her face. "Alfalfa, was it?" Sorry, she really had not been paying much attention due to the bounce in her skip and the pleasant ting that delivering her sweeties made when placed on the plates. She thought Alfalfa was an incredibly endearing sort of name, by the way. Very useful and healthy plant that was UBER important to livestock. Anna imagined that his parents were majorly into magizoology to have named their child (ONE of their children, apparently) such a live giving name. "You have a sister in Slytherin? That's so nice. One of my BESTEST friends is in Slytherin," she rambled on while peeking over at the table and waving towards Solomon specifically. "I've got family in other houses too. Little sisters and cousins. We're spread out a bit and the hardest is Gryffindor because that is a LOT of stairs to go up and down to visit, but totally doable and not really all that hard either. Hufflepuffle and Slytherin are actually quite close geographically, so you need not fret about being separated from your sister. " Not JUST geographically either, but that was a ramble for another day. "OH! Sorry there. Plum luck forgot to introduce myself," she noted quickly as she pulled out and checked her still very much broken remembrall from her robe's pocket. "I'm Anna. Anna Walles. I'm a fifth year this year and know how to make a pretty wicked scavenger hunt if you ever fancy. Made one for each of my sisters as a tutorial on how to get about Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, actually."
Which meant she was due for another one this year with Miriam starting this term! She hadn't missed her Sorting...had she?!

Fifth year was going to be the best year yet - Reuben could FEEL it. OWLs, schmowls. Exams were, like, eight months away and worrying about them wasn't going to change the outcome, was it? So, like, what was even the point in thinking about them?
See, he was a genius. The most genius genius to ever exist, and he was so proud of that. But he'd keep it to himself - see, humble, too.
Such a catch. So his aim of kissing as many girls as possible that year was basically foretold. Who wouldn't want to kiss him? Maybe he'd ask Anna on a jigsaw date, he thought as he spotted her and swaggered his way towards where she was sat. Yes - he swaggered now, according to some old lady in the corner shop. She hadn't sounded too happy when she told him (her words had been "stop swaggering around and get out of here") but Reuben had decided to embrace this. This 'ye-ne-say-waaa', if you will. "Anna, the nose ring looks hot," he said by way of greeting, before smiling around at everyone else. Mia, Paige and Maria got the brightest beams, but he didn't show much interest in the little kids.

I'M THANKS!!! That was the most perfect set up to respond with 'Hi Thanks, I'm Paige' BUT She had already introduced herself first such a wasted opportunity. Her Uncle Larry had taught her such ridiculously funny jokes that she would definitely try to unleash upon many of her classmates this term. No doubt she would get thousands upon thousands of laughs. Not setting herself for failure at all with this plan. She allowed Alfie to correct himself and extended her hand to clasp his when he went and suddenly FAKED HER OUT and pointed toward the Slytherin Table toward a girl. She would not have stood for this sleight of hand against her especially as she would be the one to performing such sleights. If it weren't for the fact that Mia, who he was pointing at was pointing right back at him. This wavelength between siblings was so impressive between the two of them made Paige a tad jealous she could not share in such sibling chemistry. Could she have a sibling please? Honestly her mother should consider getting back into the dating scene...ehem... She gave Leigh an energetic wave back as a greeting.
Back to it then. She forced Alfie's hand into her own and shook it. Ew... bad idea. So clammy. She gave his hand one firm shake then wiped it against the side of her robe. "Pleasure to meet you Alf, brother to Mia."
Her rosy red cheeks brightened at the sight of Anna coming into the Great Hall outdoing even her own cheerful disposition. Followed after with the toothiest of smiles at her friend who always gave her gifts. Paige loved gifts. She would like to have all of what Anna was giving everyone else besides her own. The rock candy looked so delicious. "This looks so yummy Anna. If you have any left over I'll happily take those off your hands later." Paige did in fact see Anna's nose ring but as with before and always she was so distracted with how freckled her friends face was she always found herself checking to see if there might be a new freckle anywhere that hadn't been there before.
The Fancy Grilled Cheese Reuben got himself a sweet smile and a cutesy wave back but he seemed more distracted and focused on Anna. Hmmm that was weird feeling pit in her stomach. Usually meant someone was getting something that she really wanted. That was usually reserved for material things. This was Anna her very nice and gracious friend. Why would she get that feeling over Reuben focusing in on Anna and not her?
It was obvious, but Paige chose to ignore it. Tonight was the night to celebrate being back at Hogwarts and be with all her friends again.

Alfie would have been relieved to know that he was spared from that joke. Not because it was a bad one, but because he would have been so embarrassed had she drawn more attention to his mix up. It was mortifying enough as it was, though fortunately his face couldn't get any redder if it tried. He had hit maximum capacity minutes ago. And really, he didn't mean to fake her out. It wasn't about that. He'd swear it.
He was just really hoping to avoid touching anyone with his sweaty hands as a courtesy, though Paige looked so keen to take it that Alf couldn't manage to explain in time. "It's a pleasure to meet you too," he replied, in turn, with a sheepish smile ... only because she noticed the way that she had wiped her hand off after touching him. "Sorry," he whispered a quiet apology.
His hands weren't usually so clammy. Jokes. They were always so clammy.

Alfie could hear all the commotion happening around him, but he managed to block it out as he zeroed his focus in on the sorting ceremony, where bestie Brooks was making his way up to the stool. The youngest Adair crossed his fingers even harder as he watched, the knots in his stomach tightening greatly as a result. When the hat yelled Gryffindor, Alfie began to cheer .... before realizing that Gryffindor wasn't Hufflepuff. That Gryffindor was actually very much not Hufflepuff. That Gryffindor was actually on the opposite end of the castle than Hufflepuff.
His heart? Sinking faster than the titanic.
In fact, he was still recovering from Brooks' sorting when Anna came to welcome him to Huffle...puffle. Did Hufflepuffs call themselves that? Uhh, um, Mia never mentioned that. "Thanks," he replied, both for the welcome and for the ... rainbow thing on the stick. He did a decent job not sounding too upset by everything happening. Even if it felt like his world was falling apart. He managed a--
O___O Alfalfa?
That wasn't his name. Which made it EVEN weirder when Alfie nodded and said, "uh, yeah," when she asked for clarification. He hadn't meant to say yes!!!! The words just tumbled out of his mouth and by the time he realized, it was too late and he was in too deep. Because then he'd have to explain why he had said yes in the first place (and he really didn't have a good answer) and she also seemed so delighted by the name (and he would hate to ruin that) and in his experience, people didn't generally take well to being corrected. He didn't mind being called by the wrong name anyway. He could be an Alfalfa or Alpaca or really anything else anyone wanted to call him.
Besides, there really wasn't any time to correct her even if he had been capable of it. With how many words she spoke per second, Alfie almost wondered if it would be possible to get in a word at all. (Not that he minded, he minded exactly 0%).
"Anna Walles," he repeated so quietly, for his own benefit. It helped him remember names. "Nice to meet you Anna." He didn't know why he felt so embarrassed. "Thanks for the lolly." He knew that he had already said thank you for that. But. He just felt like he needed to say it again.

"Hey Maria ... You ready for another year?" She frowned as she didn't see her mentor Desiree, hoping the girl was still coming... she didn't graduate, last year, did she?? No, she was sure that she had one more year with her... if not, well, she'd just have to owl.
To occupy herself Maria watched the sorting with interest, trying to ignore the hungry rumbles coming from her stomach. She also sent quite a few glances over at the lion table trying to catch sight of her boyfriend;Kion, but no luck. Thankfully Emma arrived and pulled her into conversation which Maria grasped at with a big beam. "Hi Emma, yes I am. I'm so happy that I passed all my O.W.L's, and actually got good grades." Never mind that she had only got passing grades in divination and runes. "So, how are you Emma? Ready for second year?" Time flew by at Hogwarts as evidenced by the fact she herself now was a sixth year and only had two years to go before she was a graduate, and had to decide what job she wanted to study for at university.
SPOILER!!: Alfie

As the first boy who had been sorted into Hufflepuff came over and sat down at the table Maria ignored his red face, and sweaty hair and beamed brightly and welcoming at him from across the table. "Welcome to Hufflepuff! Alfie was it? I'm Maria, sixth year. If you ever have any questions or so don't be afraid to ask." She remembered her own sorting 6 years ago now, and coming over to the badger table had been quite scary. Luckily the badger students had really given her a hearty badger welcome.

Maria was happy, upbeat even on this opening night, but Paige had her outmatched with her exuberance, enthusiasm and loud happy cheering for every sortee that became a badger. Looking over at the one year younger girl Maria beamed warmly "Hi Paige! Are you ready for O.W.L Year?" She had gotten through her own exams so if Paige ever wanted then Maria could share some revision tips that had aided her in preparation for the exams.
SPOILER!!: Leigh

"Hi Leigh! Did you have a good summer break?" Maria questioned the younger badgerette with a big smile pursing her lips as her eyes landed on the younger girl while she watched the empty seats fill up around the badger table. Feeling her stomach give a loud rumble Maria quickly looked up at the staff dais to see if Headmaster Winterbottom was anywhere near giving his speech. Sadly not as it looked since he was if Maria was a good guesser telling jokes.
SPOILER!!: Anna

When Maria caught sight Anna's nose ring she felt acutely envious which was stupid because she had never wanted a nose ring in her life. She was perfectly happy with just her ear piercings, and besides her dad's would never allow her to get her nose pierced. Shaking her head she intead focused on the rock candy that had appeared on her empty plate. Looking up at the other girl Maria said with a gesture to the wrapped candy "Hi Anna, thanks for this, The candy looks delicious. Have you made the candy yourself? Also welcome back to Hoggies yourself! I hope you had a good summer?"
SPOILER!!: Reuben

What was Reuben doing? Maria interestedly observed her fellow badger as he swaggered his way over to the table with his eyes set on Anna. There was no better word for it. Reuben was trying to impress Anna it seemed which at least made the bright beam she got feel a little less awkward. Maria was happily taken, and in a commited relationship with her boyfriend and that wasn't going to change. Maybe Reuben was just happy to be back at school again after the summer break? Returning his beam with one of her own Maria greeted "Hi Reuben! Are you excited and geered up for a new year?"

When the first of the new Hufflepuffs was sorted, Emma beamed as she recognized it as the boy from her train compartment. "Alfie!! Welcome" she grinned at him, hoping he wasn't TOO disappointed to not be placed with his sister, as she saw him glancing toward the slytherin table. "Ya know my brother was also a slytherin... But hufflepuff is cool too. You'll see!" She nodded at him encouragingly.
There was more older girls like Paige and Leigh, who got all the appreciative smiles and nods. " I swearrrr ... it seems to take longer for the food to arrive when you're not up there awaiting sorting." Emma sighed, glancing up at the staff dais and first years still awaiting their houses.
And there was Anna who uh ... what was THAT !!! Emma stared at her face for probably a beat too long but also she looked SO cool "Um hi. I want to be you." Well maybe not exactly. This was embarrassing. But also first she probably neeeded to like grow some. And then maybe she can get boys like Reuben looking at her the way he looked at all the grown girls. It wasn't fair, really. "I mean like. Well, I want that. What you have." This was awkward.
Flushed, the smol blond turned back to Maria as she informed her that she passed all her owls and which made her curious.... "that's awesome!! Congrats! How many did you take?" Like, she wanted to know what to expect. "I'm ready than ever. Although I'd be more ready if I could just like ... grow a little," she admitted sheepishly. LIKE Maria. Could she not just be as gorgeous as her? So unfair being only twelve almost thirteen though!. Even if when she was grown she'd have a lot more responsibilities and decisions, but she didn't care. She just wanted to be able to turn all the heads and have boys and maybe girls look at her with those puppy eyes. Well maybe not puppy eyes. But like, couldn't they just look at her with lust and longing?

The only owls Anna was likely to be talking about this term were those residing in the Owlery or reminiscing about those she had dueted with in Diagon Alley. She had been practicing, naturally, for any future potential duets in Drama Club in case there was another musical something or other. She did, after all, really want to impressed her Slytherin partner so he wouldn't scowl so much. All that to say that if Reuben ever wanted to forget about their pending examinations, then she was just the Hufflepuffle for him! Granted...her forgetfulness would likely be pretty accidental and not purposeful. Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to, right?
Smiling wide as her Fairy Frog Prince of the Summer Pond he approached with a limp (Had he tripped and twisted his ankle or knee or something while dismounting from the carriages?!) Should she be insisting on taking him to see the Healer rather than throwing her arms around him like she was right now for a hug?), her freckles soon began to blend in with her skin as her complexion blossomed in rogue thanks to him brining much deserved attention to her nose ring. "Actually, it's not hot to the touch at all! You can give it a poke if you want. The little beads on this one are particularly satisfying to toy with," she offered with a very enthusiastic scoot closer to him on the bench. "It is SO nice to see you again though. I missed you over the summer. It is so weird not to be able to see you, and the others, so easily like is possible while we're here and we share a common room!"
She was just passing him one of the rainbow rock candies when Paige's words elicited a delighted tiny giggle from Anna. "I regret to speculate that I doubt there will be any leftovers BUT you needed fret. I've got other surprises for you and our dormmates once we are back in the comfort of our common room and sorted out who gets what bed," she assured her friend with many a twinkle to her eyes. They just may not be very much of the eatable kind ... despite what the labels looked like with all the beautiful fruit and sweet smelling aromas.
Life Sustaining Alfalfa really was the sweetest and clearly overwhelmed by the grandeur and newness that was his first few hours here at Hogwarts. Her first year response had been far more animated but not everyone handle transitions the same way - would be terribly boring if that were the case! "You are MOST welcome!" she beamed back. "You've got loads of amazing peers who can help guide you as you figure out your path and place here at Hogwarts. Please consider me one of them too, okay? Oh, and, try not to be mean to yourself if you get lost in the castle. I still do quite often but the portraits are almost always willing to help you find your way back." Or take you on a wandering about the castle instead since not ALL things that wander are lost. "Oh, again, so...oh OH really...but anyway...you can just call me Anna. Or if you think of a nickname to help you remember who I am then that is perfect too!"
Smile once again perpetually in place, she nearly missed the arrival of actual food (and had entirely missed the headmaster's speech) due to being so engrossed with her housemates and catching up with them all. There was only SO much that one could capture with ink and quill...especially if you were someone like Anna who never knew how to be succinct. "Thanks, Maria! Well...I DID try but I used up all of the sugar at home while I tried to figure out how to make all these and mum did not like that too much...so I bought them from a cute little confectionary shop in Knightsbridge," she explained while swinging her legs and dragging her toes along the stone floor beneath her. "I did tie the ribbons myself though! Which is why some look a bit wonky compared to others because it took me a lot of practice getting used to the slippery satiny ribbon."
Reuben's rouge had faded by now, but Emma's words brought it right back - though maybe just a hair lighter or maybe it was just a slightly different hue since this time she was blushing a bit more from embarrassment since she had skipped her over while handing out the rainbow sweeties. "Oh! I'm sorry," she squeaked before plucking one out and offering it to her. "I thought I had already given you one!"
Minor situation remedied (Anna would absolutely loathe making anyone feel left out), Anna finally turned her attention to the spread of food before them and felt her stomach perform all sorts of anticipatory backflips. But WHERE and WHAT did she even begin with?! She felt like there was something scratching at the back of her thoughts about this precise moment...but she could not remember any of it right now. Maybe it was something about not filling up just on bread and making sure she ate a more balanced plate...but her hands were already reaching for the dinner rolls and her palms tickled by the gentle steam rising from them.
MMmmhmmmm, good food and good company. It felt great to be back!
