At the very edge of the school grounds lies the Forbidden Forest, huge and sprawling, as seen from the vantage point of the castle. While this place has its uses, its intriguing secrets, and is called home many creatures and beings, it is also dangerous. You should safely assume that all the rumours you've heard about the Forbidden Forest are true, and keep a safe distance from the treeline. Who knows what may be lurking in the shadows? The place has an ominous and foreboding aura about it, not that you should be getting close enough to truly feel it.

In case the name is too subtle a hint, the Forbidden Forest is strictly off-limits to all Hogwarts students. No student is to enter the Forbidden Forest without staff accompaniment. That is a firm school rule. Professor DeVries may seem like a soft touch, but you will find he can be stubborn (especially about this).

Students lurking at the edge of the Forest should be prepared to be treated with the utmost suspicion by any staff member who happens to spot them. Those with anything resembling good sense will give the entire area a wide berth.

To any observer, Mitsuki gave off an air of taking everything quite seriously and with intense perfectionist flare. While true to a degree, such acute focus was very selective and few things captured her attention for extended amount of time. One of these things was helping Mercer reach and achieve his goals and she took his declarations at the feast had preoccupied her subconsciousness ever since.

Hence the invitation to join her for a hand-in-hand walk on the grounds, something they did often, but this time without mud puddles as their intended destination. She was not sure what Mercer most wanted to see once they were within the foliage of the forest, but she was hoping to happen upon a herd of thestrals and had come prepared with some scraps from the kitchens wrapped in parchment paper.

Slowing her strides, she glanced to her right and admired Mercer's profile as she came to a complete stop. It felt necessary for him to take the lead on their decisive strides across the threshold.

Mercer was JOLLY about the fall weather and walking with his favorite female person on the grounds AND swinging her hand between their bodies for all it was worth. He was mostly jolly about everything, but he was exuding jolliness from his very being today. A veritable jolly aura.

When they stopped at the tree line of the Forbidden Forest, Mercer blinked into the dark spaces between the trees before turning that blink on Mitsuki. Not wearing his glasses, for one, but also surprise. "You know we're not supposed to go in there, right? It's like... a rule." And they generally followed most of the rules. The ones that made sense, at least.

While not unusual for Mercer to be in high spirits or of a particularly jovial disposition, the thought had crossed her mind that he had perhaps consumed an excess of Elixir to Induce Euphoria. He was not singing though, nor did his nose appear to be twitching so she easily dismissed the musing.

Her shoulder a bit tired when they came to a stop, Mitsuki rolled her shoulders slightly and allowed her gaze to linger on the forest a bit before turning to look at her favorite soul. "Does that mean you do not wish to venture inside?" she countered with the slightest pursing of the lips and tilt of the head. His proclamations at the start-of-term feast had indicated otherwise, but he was allowed to change his mind if he wanted to.

"I do want to, actually. But I don't want to get expelled when I actually put effort into my OWLs last term. And I'd be very upset if you were carried off my centaurs." Mercer glanced at her and caught that subtle shoulder roll. He'd hurt her, and it dimmed his JOLLY considerably. "You'd probably like it, though. But even still..."

Mercer shuffled his feet against the dirt that edged the clean grass marking the line between safety and less-than-safety. "I don't think I really deserve an adventure that good, actually. I haven't done a single thing to earn it."

"We won't," she assured him with a confidence she was not quite sure where it came from. Perhaps it was something in the air or the way some leaves and fluttered down from their branches along the path while they made their way down from the castle that had taught her so. She noticed the sun setting on his features, but could not understand why it would be doing that - the roll of her shoulder to loosen up in preparation for needing even more nimble reflexes certainly not on her radar for such matters - and tilted her head to observe him a bit more closely. "Only if it meant we were carried off together."

She remained quite still while Mercer busied his feet and purses her lips at the line. Wishing to contribute to this part of their excursion, she stretched her leg out and drew a thinner line with her toe beneath his. "What does that mean? Earn it?"

"I dunno." Mercer felt a lot of things that didn't have concrete thought behind it. In this case, there was some vague feeling that brave and daring doings needed preamble, or were reserved for true heroes, or maybe just were for people who didn't wrench their girlfriend's arm out of the socket. Those thoughts wouldn't land in a way he could express, so he just shrugged and turned morose eyes on her.

"I don't think you get to volunteer to be taken by centaurs, y'know? I think they would take you 'cause you're so pretty and smart. Might take me because I would taste delicious. But also I would be real heavy."

Why did he have the eyes of a faded stained glass window on a stormy day? This was intended to be a moment where his eyes glowed like the sun peeking over the horizon in the morning on a cloudless day, not as though all color had utterly drained from the world. Mitsuki found herself retracing their steps since breakfast, perhaps a bit of lint or swirl of a leaf in the air she had misread but nothing she reflected upon provided guidance. Perhaps something she had not observed? Or perhaps something that was was right beneath her nose and therefore too close to see proper?

Tilting her head and pursing her lips, Mitsuki considered Mercer for a few more quiet moments before speaking again. "Adventure in its purest form is simply a way of thinking," she spoke softly without blinking and her eyes wide enough that her lashes seemed as though they may be able to brush against her ~~weird girl~~ bangs. "Your mind is as special. Your perspective refreshing. Your take on the world fascinating. Such qualities inform me you have earned it. Perhaps you need to ask your mind need to speak to your heart to confirm so that you may understand this too and not have the disconnect." She paused for a moment to collect her thoughts some more, recalling then how he ha to peer at the trees. "Or perhaps you cannot see it such because you have neglected your glasses today."

Something in her chest encouraged her cheeks to blossom with pink but her thoughts clouded the experience. "Centaurs do not have a XXXXX and are not wizarding killers. Thankfully we need not concern ourselves with such scenarios," she reminded him while gently swinging their arms again.

"They won't even eat me, huh? What a disappointment I've proven to be today," Mercer responded lightly, feeling better and lighter at Mitsuki's words. She was overly serious in her insistence that he reimagine his role in this adventure, and she really did think way too highly of him, but it was NICE to have someone think highly of you sometimes.

"What if I just... offered you up to them instead? Maybe then they'd take me out of gratitude." He made an attempt to sweep her off her feet.

She would have thought it a good thing to not be considered for sustenance by the centaur colon, and perhaps Mercer did believe it to be a good thing since his tone and posture indicated as much despite his words reflecting the opposite. Mercer was the most delightful of paradoxes, sometimes, and Mitsuki found herself entranced by such behaviorisms and quirks. "If they do not fancy you for a meal, you who possess superior muscle mass to myself, then I do not imagine they would feel mu--- KYAAAAH," she squeaked, taken completely by surprise by his sudden scooping motion.

Yes, Mercer, you had in fact surprised her though not entirely spooked her...but it was progress towards your other goal.

Now, would he be carrying her over the threshold into the Forbidden Forest?

"I don't think I"m as sweet as you," Mercer complained lightly, hefting her rather more easily than he would have expected. Higher up on his shoulder, which... if he'd considered this act before, he probably would have gone for something a bit more charming. Mercer jostled Mitsuki lightly.

"Hey. Hey, centaurs! Come down and eat this pretty girl! She tastes like tea with honey in and a dark chocolate."
