Default The Courtyard

Accessible from the castle via the Clock Tower, the courtyard is both a throughway, leading to the wooden bridge which spans the nearby ravine, and a popular area of the grounds in its own right.

Many students spend their free time here outside of classes, particularly during break or lunch. Between lessons, this area is usually crowded with students catching up with their friends, getting in a round of gobstones, or lingering under the pear tree while they wait to head to their next class. A covered cloister surrounds the paved courtyard, and stone benches are spaced throughout the covered area, as well as dotted around the courtyard itself. Much of the architecture is in the gothic style, from the arches to the gargoyle parapets.

In the middle of the courtyard is an ancient fountain flanked by stone eagle sculptures, their features somewhat worn away by the elements over the years. Feel free to make a wish and toss a coin into the fountain, but be aware that once it's gone, it's gone. Any attempts to retrieve it will be unsuccessful, as the coin will keep magically sinking out of reach. Do not try to jump into the fountain; staff will take pains to rescue you, but they're unlikely to be very impressed.

An addition to the courtyard as of 2104 is a bronze plaque, hanging on a restored pillar, its cracks and missing pieces clearly visible to those who take a good look. Both the pillar and its commemorative feature have now been charmed to prevent theft. The plaque reads:

Quote:
This marks the location of the duel to the death between the Neo-Alliance leader, Lucien Rosier, and the British Minister for Magic, Charles Hollingberry, which resulted in Rosier's death. Long Live Hollingberry! May 10, 2104.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Reuben had made a wish on the fountain in his first year, and then thrown in a bunch more coins just to try and get them, to see how quickly they did sink. Of course, his wish hadn't come true (he assumed - in all honesty, he'd forgotten what he had actually wished for), and he'd spend most of the rest of his years ignoring the fountain in the courtyard.

Until now. And the only reason he was hurtling towards it at speed now (from approximately one metre away, meaning his speed was not all that fast) was because he'd dropped his harmonica. And said harmonica had bounced along the floor and then over the edge of the fountain.

Should a harmonica bounce so much? The answer was no, but he'd asked his dad to charm it so that it wouldn't be damaged when he dropped it. And his dad had made it bouncy.

With a dramatic grapple at thin air, Reuben gasped as the instrument dropped into the water. Now what was he supposed to do?!

With flushed, cherry blossom cheeks, the first year Slytherin was heading back to the castle after spending an early morning out in the grounds in the frosty air. There had been a subtle chill in the air that morning that almost made it hard for the first year to breath as she trudged back up the hill towards the bridge and back to the castle. She was however dressed appropriately for this, if albeit a little scruffy. This may have had something to do with the navy, woolly hoodie that she was wearing but she couldn’t help it. It was her comfort hoodie and one of the only pieces of clothing that she’d retained over the summer after moving homes. With her hood up, hoodie pulled down to her knees and her hands covered by the long sleeves, she’d just walked over the wooden bridge and into the courtyard when she suddenly came to a halt.

There wasn’t a lot going on in the courtyard so needless to say, her eyes were instantly locked on the older boy who seemed to be chasing something across the courtyard towards the…Never mind. Sloane watched from the entrance, her eyes moving quickly from the object to the boy who was running rapidly after it! Not quick enough to actually catch it though.

Walking over with her usual stoic expression, she headed straight for him silently, not even saying a word to him as she rolled up next to him, her eyes instead on the object in the fountain which turned out to be a harmonica. Part of her was glad that it was in there because they were so annoying! After a moment of silence, she pulled her backpack off of her back. took out a large, golden coin, tossed it into the fountain and watched as it caused a ripple to emanate briefly across the water. “Maybe you should ask the fountain to be a little quicker. That was hard to watch,” her face still stoic and deadpan as she turned to look at him for the first time. Bless him, he looked out of breath and yet, there was a vacant, dopey look to his expression that almost made her feel sorry for him as she looked up at him. Although, that could also have been to do with his floppy, brown hair too. It looked sad. He was slightly taller but not enough that it made her neck hurt as she looked up at him. “I bet you’re glad no one else saw that.”

Reuben couldn't help but stare into the fountain, despairing at the loss of his beloved harmonica. He knew as well as anyone who'd been at the school for longer than a week (or at least, that was how long it had taken him to discover) that trying to reach the object would only cause the fountain to cling to it tighter, dragging it further out of reach.

That knowledge, however, didn't stop him from plunging his arm elbow deep into the water, leaning over precariously to try and grasp the harmonica. It was like the fountain was toying with him - for a moment, the shortest of seconds, he almost felt like his fingers were brushing the instrument, and then it was inches away again! With a frustrated and grumpy "Hmmph!", Reuben got to his feet, the left arm of his cloak dripping onto the floor, his hand an angry red in the cold air.

But he didn't notice that as he turned to the younger kid who was tossing a coin into the fountain, expression quizzical. "Huh? Why would I care who saw?" After all, he had no shame.

Watching him paw at the water like a stinky cat who was scared of having a bath, Sloane couldn’t help but feel sorry for the bumbling boy and his harmonica. It was only very slightly embarrassing. It was like it was teasing him. Forever out of reach. A real tragedy.

Watching as he dripped all over the floor, she frowned and took a small step back, just to make sure she was out of the splash zone, before she answered him back. “Like I Said, it was hard to watch,” her tone implying that it should have been obvious. “It wouldn’t surprise me if it has some kind of charm on it to stop people from getting the coins from the bottom so I’m not sure if you’ll be able to grab it. I heard some older kids say that if someone grabs you by the ankles and lowers you in, you can grab coins with your teeth though. You should so try that.” It was a lie, obviously, and her expression said as much. As lies go, she didn’t really try to see this one because no one would be that stupid, surely? A girl could always hope though.

Tilting his head, Reuben considered her words. "Sometimes things are hard to watch, but you still need to watch them. Important things," he said solemnly. It was something his Grandad had said, once, and Reuben hadn't understood it at the time. He was no closer to understanding it now, but he felt like it was a lesson he should pass on. Solemnness done, he tried for his usual wide grin but could only manage a tempered smile.

"There definitely is a charm on it. Which is stupid." Because of occasions like this, when he needed to go into the water and get his harmonica back! But still, he nodded sagely, as though him knowing this was due to some inner wisdom, and not the obviousness of the fact. One of his eyebrows raised at her suggestion (both of his eyebrows, actually, for he'd not yet mastered moving them individually) and he looked thoughtful - or as thoughtful as one Reuben Albert Darcy-Stemp could possibly be. Potentially he just looked constipated. "Who said that?" his tone was curious rather than accusatory, because although it was a trick he might like to pull on someone, the idea that someone (let alone a first year!) would do so to him was beyond him.

And she wanted him to try it? Great! Now he did beam, spinning to face her properly. "Good idea. Seeing as there's no one else here, and there's no way you can lift me, I'll grab your ankles and you can try, yeah?"
