Standing squarely in the middle of an otherwise featureless lawn is an immense oak tree with sprawling, high-reaching branches, its foliage thick and rich with natural colour, depending on the time of year. The tree is taller than it has any right to be, and seems ideal for climbing. That is, indeed, what your benevolent groundskeeper had in mind when he grew it.
The very lowest branches jut out six feet or so above the ground, but if you can't reach or haul yourself onto these, there are little nooks and conveniently located knots in the trunk to get you started. Up in the higher branches, you'll find platforms and maybe a basic treehouse structure or two, but the real fun to be had is in traversing the tree itself.
Climbing tree though it is, this area also serves as a pleasant meeting place, the vast canopy of leaves providing plenty of shade in the summer months. A plank swing dangles from one of the lower branches, and a tyre swing from another.
It's pretty difficult to confuse this tree with the Whomping Willow. For starters, you're in an entirely different part of the grounds. Not to mention, the climbing tree is an oak, and (presumably) won't maim you for trying to climb it. All the same, you're expected to treat this place with respect. Don't act like a fool, especially when you're high up in the tree. If you do happen to fall, the slowing and softening charms in place around this area will kick in, and you will come to no great harm.
Do as you please here, as long as its within school rules. Relax. Have fun. Go wild (but maybe not too wild).
Emmie had now survived the first week of classes, and felt that that deserved a trip outside to the grounds especially since she had run into the resident poltergiest on the way who had turned her hair beautiful black hair an awful shade of puke green just because he could. Now Emmie was sitting, no hiding on the plank tree swing in the tree house, dangling with her legs and trying to figure out how to solve this new problem. Luck didn't seem to follow her so far.
Would it raise to many questions if she went to see the healer or charms professor for assistance?

After so many years spent adventuring outdoors, Roulan knew adjusting to nearly full time in a classroom with her students would be a difficulty for her. It was enjoyable work - and she liked teaching and learning from them all alike - but she also would forever feel the pull of the great outdoors. Which was exactly why she had promised herself early, that every day would be started with a stroll around the grounds - and if she had time during free periods and around meals, she'd sneak in additional ones as well.
And lucky for her, this was one of those times.
Having heard plenty about the climbing tree, and curious to study it to see exactly which Charms had been used on it, she slowly made her way from the castle to the spot on the grounds where it was housed. Her cane giving a slow thunk, thunk, thunk as it made impact with the earth beneath her during her trek. It didn't take long before she noticed another small body. And even less time to read the body language and conclude the youngling appeared to be upset. "Good day, are you quite alright?" She called out, concerned. Increasing her pace just a little as she settled where she could better see the girl. Had the charms on the tree perhaps failed and she'd been harmed?

The Thunk, thunk, thunk that Emmie heard coming closer and closer to the climbing tree made her want to hide even more. Unfortunatley up on a swing there was not much she could use for cover. She considered pulling her sweater up over her hair to at least disguise her hair, but when the owner of the thunking cane came into view she gave that thought up.
Professor Liu was a nice woman that her bonus auntie Amelia talked only good things about so Emmie decided to answer truthfully. Maybe Professor Liu could turn the poltergiest into a frog something for his prank on her. "Good day Professor Liu," Emmie greeted slowly, but politely as she shook her head trying to not start crying even as she felt the tears build up in her eyes "No, I'm not all right. That evil poltergeist has turned my hair an awful shade of puke coloured green just because he felt like it, and everyone is going to tease me about it, and make it even worse for me than when i cried about the house I got sorted into on the steps of the entrance hall." Emmie feared that this was going to follow her all the way until christmas.
Etta enjoyed being outside even in colder climates especially when her house was in a dungeon. It was fascinating and all but it did make her feel claustrophobic sometimes. During one of her discovery adventures she found the famous climbing tree! It was very tempting to climb up the branchest like she had done back when she lived with her foster grandmother, but there was also a plank swing! She couldn’t pass up the opportunity to enjoy a good swing.
Etta set down her backpack next to the tree, it took about three hops to successfully land on the plank. The youngling could not contain her joy! Propelling her small legs back and forth she formed a rhythm and the swing took its course. As she (joyfully) swung she sang a Korean nursery rhyme about a tomato. This was fun!

Hehe. Yay.
Kenneth would have been content to spend his free time in the library or the Hufflepuff common room with a cup of tea and a book, but he'd promised his uncle he wouldn't do that every single day. He hadn't promised he wouldn't take a cup of tea and a book other places, though, so when he ventured outside today, in addition to an extra sweater, he'd also tucked a book and a thermos of tea into his bag. He heard singing as he approached a large tea, but was undeterred. He could see the treehouse up there, and if he was going to be outside, reading in a treehouse sounded like a grand idea.
Once he got close, though, the tree looked a bit intimidating. He did not think he would actually climb up there, after all. Maybe he'd sit on the other, unoccupied swing? He gave the swinging, singing girl a cautious look, then climbed up onto the tyre swing. He hoped she wasn't waiting for someone she knew to swing with her. He didn't mind the singing, though. It sort of fit with not being in a library, that there would be more sounds and talking and, in this case, singing. So, yes. He could read here. He struggled to pull his book out of his bag without falling off the swing.

Maybe reading here was easier said than done.
Etta, having a grand ‘ol time as she swung with her eyes closed. Closing her eyes while swinging added a level of thrill! Sort of like a rollercoaster effect. However, upon hearing someone nearby the singing stopped. Her face paled…she wasn’t familiar with this youngling and new faces intimidated her. Was he nice? Etta swung herself in silence.
The boy seemed nice from afar. The youngling did notice the struggle on the tire swing, though.
Help him. Help him.
“Uhm…would you like to trade swings?” Her swing would be less of a struggle to read on.
Etta felt a shiver of anxiety, but was enjoying herself out here.

Kenneth gave the girl a concerned look when she stopped singing and offered to...trade swings with him? Did he look that hopeless? Kenneth climbed down from the swing, shaking his head. "No, thank you," he said, "I can manage." Feet firmly on the ground, he got his book from his bag, and plopped the bag on the ground, a little to close to the swing to avoid being kicked, were he to actually swing.
Book in hand, he climbed back onto the tire swing. Yes, that was much better. He opened his book, then looked back at the girl. "You can keep singing," he said. "It won't bother me." He didn't give any thought about the reverse, whether his presence would bother the girl.

Oh the poor dear! Roulan grew more and more concerned as the young girls eyes looked with tears, and she stepped closer to the tree to observe her - glancing for any other outward signs of distress. The green hair was the only thing of note, thus far. "Ah, Peeves is it? I have certainly heard plenty of tales about that particular poltergeist. Not all good things, I'm afraid." as the first year could attest. "The hair is an easy enough fix though dear. Would you like some assistance?"
As for crying on the stairs? "I don't think you need to worry too much about that. Everyone has preferences, and it is disappointing when yours isn't matched with reality - like being placed in a house you didn't want. You weren't the only one disappointed." And she'd handled it far better than some as well. "What house had you been hoping for?"

Why was it that Solomon’s mood always seemed to be the opposite of Aurora’s? Although she was pretty oblivious to the grumpiness due to the pride she felt at achieving such a perfect spell for which she hadn’t really had that much practice for. “I’m getting really good at Charms” she beamed excitedly. Other lessons perhaps not so much but Charms were quick and easy and didn’t require too much long and hard concentration from the Ravenclaw and therefore less of an opportunity to become distracted.
“Okay. Give me ten seconds..” And off she sprinted out of the Great Hall and out into the grounds.
As promised, Solomon gave Aurora a quick 10 seconds before the competitiveness kicked in and he sped away from the Slytherin table, almost slipping on some dumb marmalade and milk that was spilled from their mini food fight. She was already out of sight when he reached the main doors out to the grounds, but once he was outside he could see her stature. She had gotten much further than he had expected.
Seeing her was all the motivation he needed, Solly picked up speed and would have sent anyone flying who had gotten in his way, but thankfully no one seemed to be in his sights.
By the time they had reached the tree, Solly was right behind Aurora. It really could have been anyone’s game right now.
“You’ll… never… make it.” He managed to GASP the words out.

Honestly Solly was FAR more competitive than Aurora was and she was seriously considering just letting him win as everyone knew how much boys loved to show off. But then again where was the true fun in that?
So the Ravenclaw did actually manage that last second spurt which as a particularly short person was quite a difficult task. In fact she even added a flair by diving into a forward roll and reaching out her fingertips as far as she could to touch the tree trunk only to see Solomon there too.
“Who won?!” she giggled, not really really caring about the result but interested nonetheless. She remained sitting on the floor after the roly-poly, leaning back against the bark to catch her breath.

The amount of energy and breath that Solomon had exerted was embarrassing. He did his best to conceal how hard he was recovering while resting his hand on the tree trunk, not even noticing Aurora roly-polying but then seeing her resting on the ground. Now that was a good idea. Solly let himself fall down beside her and laid on his back, arms and legs spread out like a starfish.
“Definitely me.” He replied to her. She may not care on the result but he sure did, although he couldn’t be entirely sure either. It was probably a draw after all.
Solly soon rested his hands on his stomach, suddenly regretting the giant breakfast he’d JUST had. “I feel a bit… sick.” For real… maybe their next stop would be the hospital wing.

Considering that she had performed her little gymnastic trick and therefore hadn’t actually seen the final result of their race, Aurora had no reason to not believe Solly and so therefore gave him a little congratulations in the form of a sideways squeeze as he joined her on the floor. “Only just though, right?” she giggled, not at all feeling resentful considering he HAD let her have that ten second lead and so he won fair and square.. kinda. To the best of her knowledge anyway.
But then Solly was starting to look a little green and winded and the bright giggling beam that was her expression switched to one of slight concern at the sight. “You silly billy, you’ve probably got a stitch!” Lucky for Solomon, Aurora’s Ma was a health and fitness coach and dealing with exercise related illnesses was something she DID actually know about. “You gotta take biiiiig deep breaths, in and out. Like this..” She took a dramatic breath in through her nose and then took her time exhaling it out through her mouth.
She would’ve suggested going for a climb up to the second set of branches but it didn’t look like the Slytherin would be partaking in any more exercise for the time being.

"Peeves is evil!" Emmie blurted out hotly before biting her tounge. "Sorry for the outburst professor." she apologized with blushing cheeks. The resident school poltergiest had clearly made himself her enemy by turning her hair into this awful, ghastly shade of green. "Are all poltergeist's like peeves professor? Are none of them nice?"
Emmie had to blink and blink while she processed what Professor Liu had just said. She could fix her hair? Without more thought Emmie climbed back down from the swing and down, down to the ground until she stood in front of her new favourite professor. Eagerly, and with clear emotion in her voice Emmie asked "Can you really make my hair black again? Then please do it right away, I don't want to see these awful green strands longer than I have to." Emmie's last resort would have been to wear the biggest hat that she could find to hide her hair from her peers at the claw table.
"I wanted to be a Hufflepuff, like my dead mother was." Emmie said in small tone. Talking about her mother was still hard.

Solly was surprised but pleased at Aurora’s complete faith in him that he had won, mostly because he couldn’t be entirely sure. Turns out she was agile, after all!! He grinned at her question, and gestured a small amount using his fingers. “It was so close.” As for climbing UP the tree in race form - well, Solly wasn’t too sure he was going to partake.
It was definitely NOT just a stitch. In fact, Solomon had to sit up and look at the ground in fears he would vomit right there and then. He shook his head at her, ‘No… really… I’m gonna be sick…” but he did decide to join in with the breathing techniques she was demonstrating. He copied her dramatic breathing for a few. “Okay… that helped.” Finally he chuckled although felt a bit embarrassed. “Thanks.”
He wasn’t all that athletic, okay?

She knew that the result would’ve been close. Short legs she might’ve had but what she lacked in height she made up for in determination and agility. Her special skill was being able to zip her way through large crowds unnoticed. “I bet I’m faster than you thought.” As for believing that Solly was telling the truth, it wasn’t like there was a prize for winning and Aurora hadn’t thought she was likely to win anyway so there was no reason for her not to trust him.
Aurora might not have been so forgiving if Solomon was sick on her. She’d of course pat him on his back and make sure that he was okay but being vomited on was an entirely different matter and just the thought alone was enough to force the Ravenclaw’s nose to wrinkle up in disgust. “If you are, can you direct it the other way?” she asked. Sadly she didn’t know of any spells to stop nausea nor did she know how to transfigure a sick bowl either.
Sometimes the random spells that they learned didn’t make much logical sense compared to really useful ones but still they were fun and who was she to question the greatness of their Professors?
“Maybe we should take a break before climbing?” she giggled, folding her legs crossed underneath her.
"Peeves is evil!" Emmie blurted out hotly before biting her tounge. "Sorry for the outburst professor." she apologized with blushing cheeks. Roulan couldn't fault the girl for her opinion, so she didn't take any offense on the Poltergeist's behalf at the exclamation. Rather, she was impressed the young one still had the sense to apologize for it - even if she certainly would have let it go. "It's quite alright, dear. I would not even think to fault you for your opinion." As for others like Peeves? "Truthfully, I can't say I have met too many in my time. But I imagine just as ghosts and humans have differing personalities, so too would poltergeists."
The Charms professor smiled a bit as the girl scurried back down the tree, glad to see her offer of assistance seemed to perk her mood up some. "Of course! It's a simple enough charm and I'm happy to be able to help." Pulling her wand from it's holster in her sleeve, Roulan cast a quick non-verbal Colovaria on the girl - righting the color back to it's previous black. "We're right as rain now. I can teach you the charm if you'd like too so you know how to cast it should you ever need to again?" It's something they would cover in class at some point too, however if it would give her more peace of mind to learn it earlier Roulan would be happy to assist.
"I hear Hufflepuff is an excellent house as well. And it is nice to have those connections with our parents. But you know, I think you could find similarities between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw and learn to love the differences too if you keep an open mind and give yourself some time to adjust. It's okay to be disappointed too though." As long as she didn't close herself off to enjoying the experiences she could have in Ravenclaw.

Truthfully, Solly WAS impressed with Aurora’s speed. If they were to partake in a real race where he could prepare properly and not fill his gut beforehand, Solly would actually be a little worried about losing to her! Of course, he didn’t want to mention that. “You are. I’m very impressed.” He giggled, because Aurora’s giggling was infectious sometimes. “Let’s cool it on the racing today, though, yeah?” Too much competitiveness for the day.
HUH. Rude.
“Direct it the other way?!” Solly fake frowned a little. “As I said earlier, better out than in. It’s bad for you to hold sick in, you know.” Even for a second to face another way. And anyway, he expected her to look after him wholeheartedly in any case.
If only he had brought some marmalade with him, he would toss it at her.
And as for the climbing, “one hundred percent.” In fact, he wanted to go back to the great hall.

In Aurora’s defence it wasn’t actually HER that had suggested a race and therefore Solomon’s predicament was entirely self inflicted. He was obviously too competitive for his own good. The sound of others giggling was music to her ears and only spurred her own laughter on until she got to the point where she couldn’t breathe. Today she was able to control said laughter considering that she was a little tired from the ‘race’ although she was doing all she could not to show it. “Okay. But next week I challenge you to a race UP the tree.” She could do with the time to prepare anyway, Aurora had the huge disadvantage of having short limbs.
“I never said you had to hold it in, just that you had to direct it away from me.” Sadly the Ravenclaw had no intentions of becoming a Healer but she WAS the empathetic type and hated it when others were feeling miserable. She probably had enough energy left in her to race her way up to the hospital wing to grab him a potion if he really needed it.
For the meantime Solomon would have to make do with the third year linking her arm in with his and leaning into his side instead.
