If you are eager to see, be seen, and get to London first, then the front passenger cars of the train are for you. Just like the other cars, a long corridor provides access to the many compartments, each labelled with a letter, available for you and your friends to hunker down in until the train has come to a complete stop. Cushioned seats and large windows, allowing perfect views of the British scenery on your journey, await.
Well, what are you waiting for? Slide open a compartment door and make yourself at home. Place any of your belongings not in the luggage car on the racks above you. Chat with your friends about what your summer plans, enjoy munching on the snacks you bought from the trolley lady, get ahead of the game by exchanging addresses, or take a long nap as the train travels over numerous hills and mountainsides. Whatever you do, exhibit your best behaviour -- the prefects will be regularly patrolling the corridors and poking their heads inside your compartment to make sure you are doing so.

Woe betide anyone who disturbed his peace.. or had thoughts of their own.. which he responded to with pure unadulterated hostility.
At least, that was Ezra's assessment..
So Ezra kind of understood Eli. Or, at least, tolerated his behaviour. He was his blood. Eli was the same as the rest of his pedigree. And yet Ezra still loved them warts and all. It was he who was the outlier within the insular confines of their claustrophobic family unit.
And he wasn't going to start their usual not-so-playful banter in front of a stranger, so he just chuckled at Eli's dismissive words and nudged him lightly. “Closest then?” definitely Closest.
He looked over at the other boy, who looked like a new first year and he seemed happy enough --good stuff!--and gave him a big smile. A chatterbox too! How wonderful for Elias. Hah!
“Hi Sammy!” The boy seemed more excited than he was. Ezra was aware of the food trolley but hadn't yet paid it a visit. “Not yet, but I'm getting hungry so I'll be heading along there soon.” He looked at the card and beamed. It sounded like Sammy had a nice brother who bought him treats—you hear that Elias!? “Do you collect the cards? I have one..” He dug in his pocket and handed it to the boy. “.. that you can have if you want?” He wasn't interested in the cards, just in the chocolate. In fact, he hadn't even looked at it to see if it was a rare one.
DRAGONS! Oh yeah! That's what these two had been talking about when Ezra rudely interrupted! “Our great uncle used to work on a reserve and he took us there during the summer!” He looked at Eli. “It was the best thing ever.” Unforgettable! “What's your favourite dragon?” He asked Sammy. In fact, what was Eli's? “What's yours, Eli?” Weird that he didn't know that – but Eli was a closed book... at the bottom of the pile of more closed books.
"Thanks, that's really nice!" Sammy thanked the older boy with a grin. Yup, Ezra was definitely way cooler than his brother. Eli looked like he didn't smile like, EVER. Which was upsetting. Maybe when he was reading about dragons. Everyone had to have SOMETHING they enjoyed, yes? "I don't collect them a lot but I think I might. Just for fun ya know?" he added. It was give him something to do in his free time now that they were in school!
"Really?! That's so cool!" he said with a smile as Ezra told him about their uncle and his dragons. As for his favorite dragon, Sammy didn't have an answer for that. "Uhhh...the ones that breathe fire?" he answered, which he knew was EVERY dragon, but he didn't know the different types! He hadn't even been aware that there were different breeds of dragon until like, two years ago sooo.

With that being said, if he was going to tolerate anyone invading his personal space at least it was his brother and not a stranger.
“I suppose” he responded at the correction over these two being the closest. They were close in age with only 11 months between them. They were also close in the sense that they were often left to do things together as the twins were younger. “I’d hardly believe that you consider me your favourite brother though.” Was he?
His brother was also an expert at engaging others in conversation so he could silently judge rather than being forced to interject. Therefore he was quite useful to have around in the long run. As the two other boys conversed, Eli reopened his book to continue where he left off when he was dragged back into the land of mindless chatter over Dragons. Which admittedly was a topic that could pique his interested. The summer at the reserve HAD actually been one of the best experiences he had ever had and he allowed a small but brief smile graced his lips. “The Antipodean Opaleye.” For obvious reasons considering the family business drew their inspiration for their name from it. He highly doubted that Sammy was particularly knowledgeable over Dragon species so was actually intrigued to hear his answer. “Have you ever even seen a Dragon?” Hmm?
Sammy blinked at him. Had he ever seen a dragon? Duh! Of course he had! "I've seen pictures," he replied, wondering why the boy would ask him such a silly question. "OHHH wait. You mean like in real life," he realized what Eli was actually asking a second later and shook his head. "No, never. I think I'd be kind of scared to. What if they turned on you and decided to barbecue you??" he asked. If a dragon decided it wanted to cook you for dinner he highly doubted one would have time to stop it from happening!

She’d never really spent a lot of time with a load of children, let alone children that were also wizards. She’d obviously spent time with her siblings but that didn’t count. From her experience, other children were weird. They always talked too much and were kind of annoying, although that could have been because she was so used to her siblings being loud. She had to tolerate them so any time that she didn’t have to tolerate someone, she was pretty sure they knew it.
“Okay, s’cool. I haven’t seen her b’come all skittish but I don’t really want to either, y’know?” she mumbled as she bent down towards the cage to get her out. After opening the cage door and stretching her arm out, Sloane waited patiently for Circe to flutter out onto her arm and then continued stroking her head. She loved Circe more than anything she’d ever owned, as much as you could own another living thing that is, and would do anything to keep her happy.
“It’s nice t’meet you, Nadia” the look on her face not exactly a smile but it wasn’t hostile either as she sat opposite her now, the owl on her arm as if she were some kind of Bond villain. Circe eyed the girl, her head tilting to one side and eyed her for moment as Nadia said her name, but other than that, she gave no sign that the girl was there.
“You’re older than me,” more of a statement than a question, “What year are you in?” Her tone of voice only contained a small trace of its usual curtness as she tried to sound as though she wasn’t interrogating Nadia, but she figured it was most likely a failed attempt. Truthfully, she was making an effort to seem nice, however most people always seemed to look at her silly no matter what.
“Mhmm…” Nadia did know. She loved creatures but that didn’t mean she wanted to see them at their less than finest hours going all berserk. There had been a few times it had happened home on the reserve, even though her Papa and Daddy would try to keep them back and not to witness. Better to respect them at all costs, even if they aren’t hippogriffs requiring you to bow to keep yourself safe. Then you get to truly enjoy their company and human and creature could live in harmony.
She watched as the bird seemed to be giving her the once over, her hand in her bag searching to see if she had any treats. No creature was her own, but the Gryffindor did tend to have something for her sister’s lying around. Or any owl in the owlery for that matter when she went to visit. “Third year…” she answered, though it seemed almost as if the first two years had flown so fast. Was this what Raj had meant when he talked about his own full seven years?
“How about you?” Nadia asked, returning the favor just as her touch happened on something. She could tell too that her companion was younger than her but she wasn’t about to assume just how much. Taking out her hand, the third year was happy that she had hit pay dirt, holding out the owl treat for Circe. Couldn’t hurt to get on the owl’s good side to help insure nice travels.
Sorry, this is a bit muddled. Like my brain rn. D: <3

Well.. that wasn't altogether true. Ezra did like his time alone – he'd had a blast watching the steam billow from the train, and he hadn't been expecting to stumble across Eli, and his friend here, but it would have been rude just to walk on by.
A smile from Ezra at that admission. “Well.. you're my closest brother.” He replied ambiguously. As much as he cared for Eli, he was a stubborn, uncompromising, grumpy goblin.
Most certainly grumpy.
Most definitely half goblin.
What was their mother not telling father? Hah.
Sammy seemed nice and friendly – a ray of sunshine, and he reminded him of the few friends he had left behind at Durmstrang. “No problem!” He nodded to the boy and grinned back over the offer of the chocolate frog cards. “You can have any more I get if you decide to collect them.” Which would be a TON because chocolate frogs were a favourite of Ezra's.
Ooh. Antipodean Opaleye was a good choice from Eli! And not just because of the dodgy family business's name... but he suspected why he chose it. “You're only saying that one because of the business.” Such a suck up to the Greenwood elders.
It had been the most extraordinary experience visiting the Dragon Reserve. Unky Nate was the luckiest man alive to have worked there in his youth. Ezra figured that Sammy wasn't too clued up on the different species of dragon given his reply, but that was fine. “Hey Eli, you should show Sammy your book.” He offered on his brother's behalf. Sharing is caring. “I like a Chinese Fireball. They're so cool looking.” He addressed the pair.
Back to Sammy again, his eyes widened at the thought of being barbecued by a dragon. “I love dragons but I'm not sure I'd like to work with them. You'd have to be very very brave to get close up to them unsupervised. But I'll admire them from afar.”

The ambiguity of Ezra’s answer was not lost on the young Greenwood. It was also the type of answer that he himself would’ve made and therefore he could somewhat admire him for it. The corner of his lips twitched up ever so slightly in response, proof that he WAS capable of smiling albeit in the subtlest of ways. This family weren’t the best at showing affections particularly amongst the elders. Their mother was a bit of an anomaly which was why Ezra was SUCH a Mummy’s boy.
Being compared to a Goblin however was not something he’d appreciate. If he knew that was what his brother was thinking he’d of called him a toad back. Besides, Elias was tall for his age and he had perfectly normal sized ears thank you very much!
Eli didn’t share his brothers obsession with chocolate frogs but he did have a secret small stack of cards that he kept in his bedside cabinets of his favourite wizards and witches that he would not be sharing with anyone else.
“No I’m not!” he snapped back. Yes the name had an influence on his opinion initially but there was plenty to love about the dragon. “They are the least aggressive of the dragons species and therefore the easiest to study.” Which meant realistically they could be a species he could work with in the future if he wanted to, especially considering that Ezra was the eldest son and therefore would be inheriting the family business. As for sharing his book? That received an almighty frown from the eleven year old. “I don’t share MY books.” If he was really interested Sammy could just go to the library himself.
Speaking of Samuel, his response generated a roll of Elias’ eyes. Of COURSE he’d never seen a dragon, the child seemed far more interested in much more mundane endeavours than he would in admiring the magnificent beasts. “All Dragons breathe fire, that’s a characteristic of a Dragon.” Surely everyone knew that? “I suppose that’s wise, they might mistake you for a ginger sheep.” Cue the smirk.
Charlie took the container without a word at first, prying off the lid to get a decent look at the goods, maybe break a piece off one to try it. It wasn't until he looked up and locked eyes with Roman again that he spoke, breaking into a broad smile. "Thanks. That's real decent of you." And he took one of the cookies, broke it in half, and passed the second half back to Roman. Could have just passed a whole one back but, with Roman, it just seemed to make the splitting and sharing more obvious, more tangible. "When's your birthday?"
Chess-wise, he ordered his bishops pawn forward to stand side by side with the first, simultaneously threatening Roman's pawn and inviting an attack. "Loads of opponents at Hogwarts, I bet," he remarked. Even a chess club too, though whether Charlie would join said club was something yet to be determined. He had as few reasons to do so as not to.
He bit off the corner of his cookie half, fairly perplexed by what Roman had said about being eleven. Charlie had only ever felt limited by his age in the practical sense, the limits imposed by the law, and also by his parents and healers but with the law very much on their side. For him, his brain was the thing that could do anything - according to his infallible, now-twelve-year-old wisdom - where his body so often tried to tap out. Then again, he'd never been interested in writing stories himself.
All this he mulled over while chewing on the cookie, his face impassive. "So make a mess," he said at last. The first step to making beautiful things, maybe, or possibly part of the process, depending on your opinion of beautiful messes. But ultimately, what Charlie wanted was for Roman to be comfortable with a certain level of chaos, disorder, grey areas with indistinct boundaries, and the ultimate extremes. For the sake of his stories? Oh, sure, those too.
Fortunately, Charlie was happy to provide guidance in this area. He was something of a seasoned professional.
Roman couldn't tell if Charlie liked the cookies gifted to him or not. It was hard to tell with his new friend, and Roman wasn't sure if found the trait exciting or annoying, or perhaps both. "Real decent of me?" Roman felt a teasing smile play across his face. What a way to word that statement. "Thanks. I'm glad I'm decent. And my birthday is in January. So we still have quite a bit to go." He wondered if Charlie were much of a gift-giver. His more comfortable side was to make a joke about Charlie returning the favor in January, but his shy side won over. He and Charlie weren't that close, yet. He had to keep his boundaries up a bit longer.
He didn't put much thought into his move. He was enjoying the conversation, and while a win would make him feel good, he wondered if losing would make him feel better. If he lost, maybe Charlie would continue to play with him. If he won, Charlie might be bitter and rue the day he ever played Roman in chess. He certainly wouldn't let the other boy win, but perhaps he wouldn't purposely try to crush his enemy. He moved his pawn to overtake the one Charlie had just moved in place, so his pawn was now next to Charlie's on the board.
He chewed on the cookie and dusted his hands off on his slacks. Make a mess? I don't want to make a mess. Messes were a bit scary. He found himself wrinkling his nose. "So I can clean it after?"
