A little way off the path between the castle and the lake stand several half-sphere outdoor shelters, known as the domes. Made from a sturdy and clear, charmed material that keeps the temperature inside relatively comfortable, and the air fresh, the main purpose of the domes is a location to hang out, alone or with a few friends. They also serve as impromptu shelters during sudden downpours, cool relief from the summer heat, or a place to warm benumbed fingers and toes during bitingly cold winters. Each is accessible by a simple door made of the same material. No need to reserve them - just make sure no one is already there before entering!
The domes are near to each other, but not clustered too close together. They are completely transparent; those outside can see in, and those inside can see out. Occupied domes will light up - though the light has no obvious source - useful and downright cosy on overcast or gloomy days. The groundskeeper, and any staff member looking out of the windows on this side of the castle, will be able to see the domes if they're lit up after dark, so unless you want to light the 'hey, look at me, I'm out after curfew' beacon, don't even bother coming this way. Better yet, don't break curfew at all. Javier does not take kindly to kids messing around on his grounds after curfew.
Each dome contains five comfortable chairs, and can comfortably hold as many students, maybe a couple more if you don't mind a tight squeeze. Try to refrain from seeing how many students can fit inside one of these things at once. Getting a score of kids hopelessly stuck will not have a good outcome for anyone, but it's up to you if you want to test that theory out for yourself.

As it always was when it came to lesson planning, Dhruv had a few new ideas to include or to switch with his original ones. It was too much of a good sunny September day to stay stuck indoors, so they had gathered pens, pencils and the notebook containing the vital information before trekking out to the grounds. The sun hitting their skin felt rather pleasant; of course their eyes were protected by the ever trustworthy pair of shades.
The DADA professor opted for the Domes, selecting an empty one to make themself comfortable. One ankle resting on the other knee, they balanced their book on a leg. Though you couldn’t see it, their eyes were darting across the page outlining an upcoming lesson on Manticores. There was a particular aspect in the activity which Dhruv was interested in possibly making changes to; they just needed to mull that over for a bit.
It was a nice day, and Brandon was very much appreciating it. He had been told repeatedly and decidedly by a certain sister that the weather decided on your mood for the day. That was not true, but it had truth inside of it. A lot of the things she said were that way. He wandered around the grounds with his book(a memoir of a healer, of course) and a letter he was writing to his stepmother. Former stepmother? No... stepmother. It was also to his brother, but his brother couldn't read yet. He expected that she'd just read it out to him. After all, Brandon wrote at the top of the letter that she should read it to his brother too. And maybe show him what a few of the words meant. He was trying to keep a relationship, as much as half-siblings could when they lived in different homes and were seven years apart.
He wasn't sure whether he wanted to read his fascinating book or write his important letter first, but he'd do both eventually so he brought both along with him. They were tucked securely under his arm. While he was heading to the domes to get some nice outdoors-but-protected-from-any-chance-of-rain time, he picked some flowers to press and put in the letter.
He was just entering one of the domes when he saw his most-favorite professor ever, Professor Khanna. They had such cool sunglasses! They didn't yell at him, either. He thought that was awesome. "Hi Professor Khanna!" He was standing in front of them, because he thought looking over their shoulder would be rude. Manners and his sister had taught him that reading over someone's shoulder was invasive, and also meant knowing things that nobody wanted you to know.
...he may have been reading a little upside down. But it was okay, he figured, because he had to read slowly, and he'd understand in a few sentences whether it was more like a notebook or more like a diary. He saw that it was more like a notebook, so he kept reading upside down until he got to a word he couldn't read. It started with an s... no, m. M for sure. M... a.... n... t... i... c... o... r... e... s... He had to read it again to decipher it. Oh, manticores! This was a lesson plan. He was torn between not wanting to read it because it might be a secret and immediately being curious. "What are you reading?" he asked hopefully. Hopeful that they'd tell him about it. Extra hopeful that they couldn't tell that he knew already.

Perhaps the laxness that Dhruv had developed over the summer had been brought over to this bright September day for they really couldn’t get their mind to focus. Sure their eyes were focused on the page but the words kept sliding right on by without registering in their brain. Dhruv had way too many trains of thoughts still and their mind was immensely cluttered though they were still trying to figure out why this was the case. Perhaps Cicero or Jericho could have helped them calm the racing. Or even Grayson. Or perhaps…
A light conversation with a student.
Dhruv looked up to meet Brandon’s gaze. “Hello, Mr. Fox. Fancy meeting you here.” They smiled broadly because while they loved conversing with students out of lessons, they felt somewhat protective of Brandon. Perhaps it had been the Hufflepuff’s reaction to blood during a previous lesson that brought the feeling on. “Oh, I’m just doing a bit of lesson planning. Manticores will be a rather interesting topic, I should think.” Not to mention it was one which needed to be covered in the curriculum.
“What are you up to? Think you have the time to join your professor for a bit?” A student’s company was always welcome.
Brandon smiled a little when Professor Khanna told him about the lesson. He felt guilty, but since they'd said what the lesson was about he didn't have to feel guilty anymore about looking at the plans (he still felt a little guilty, but he could live with that). "Manticores are so interesting!" He hesitated. "But we don't have to meet one for real, right?" It seemed clear to him that they wouldn't, but he could never be too certain. He really did not need a hand-on lesson this time! The textbook and a lecture would suffice, surely.
"I was going to read my healer memoir and write my stepmother a letter but then I saw you looking at a notebook and I wanted to know what you were doing." Brandon was very curious at heart, and he did not always have the safety to be curious about things. So now that he could be curious about things, he was curious all the time and he wanted to know as much as he could. "So I read it upside down," he admitted honestly. He sat cross-legged in the chair next to Professor Khanna and tried to read it right side up.

Dhruv didn’t mind if Brandon, or any other student for that matter, found out what an upcoming lesson was all about. They liked watching the excitement, or lack of, of the student finding out about the topic. All they asked was that the student keep things between the two of them. In short, the Hufflepuff had nothing to worry or feel guilty about. Dhruv smiled, quite pleased with the reaction received though not surprised about the question. “I’m glad you think so. Fascinating beings, Manticores are. Reassuring you that you’ll not be meeting any.’’ They really could understand the young man’s fear. “What dark creatures would you be interested in learning about?” Just for Dhruv’s records, you know. Student feedback was important.
Healer memoir? “Are you on the way to getting over your dislike for blood then?” It was Dhruv’s turn to be curious. They offered the book of notes to Brandon. “I’ve been trying to brainstorm the perfect activity for the lesson. I have a few but they just need to be fleshed out.” There was still plenty of time for this since the Manticore lesson was scheduled to be until after the Christmas vacation. “Anyway. Your stepmother… do you have a large family then? Many siblings?” Or was it the opposite and the family was small?
Brandon considered. "Um... all of them." He hesitated. "Acromantulas? They're so close to here. My sister claims that her teacher tried to feed them all to acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest." Whether that was true or not, he didn't know. It was likely somewhere in between. "Do boggarts count as a creature? What about lethifolds?" He had lots and lots of ideas for lessons, but he was reluctant to learn about some of them. Inferi scared him, for example. Even just in pictures. Reanimated dead bodies seemed so terrible and unnatural to him.
"Not really," Brandon admitted. "But I really want to be a healer, and healers can still do things that scare them." He wasn't getting over his fear of blood as much as he was shutting it down, ignoring it, recognizing it was there and then pushing it out of the way so he could concentrate on his healing or potions brewing or reading. He carefully looked over the lesson plan. "You could always dress up a cat as a mini manticore and have it terrorize the students," he joked. "Or have people make a short video documenting a day in the life of a manticore. But the manticore is really just their cat." He was not very helpful, so he handed the notebook back.
Brandon scratched at a scar on his eyebrow, a nervous habit. "I have an older sister and a younger brother and my stepmother." So no, not a big family at all. And he lived with none of them. He didn't feel like saying any of that stuff. "But I have Evy's family, and she's pretty much my sister. And I have pets." He perked up a little, because it was so much easier to talk about animals than his family. "I have a horse and a cat. And my stepmother has a dog. And my sister has three pets of her own but she promises that one of them is actually a hat pretending to be a rabbit. And Evy's family has their own pets too." He smiled. "Isn't that so cool? I think it's cool."

All of the creatures. This was noted, Brandon. Dhruv imagined there were quite a bit of the student population that felt this way. “Acromantulas can be a touchy subject due to the number of students that have arachnophobia, but it is a necessary topic. While I do not approve of such a method of motivation from a professor, it is possible said professor might not have been serious about carrying out the threat.” Still… the threat sounded unnecessary and harsh to Dhruv; their students would never hear them uttering such words in the same sentence. “Boggarts are classified as ‘non-beings’ since they are a magical spirit. Lethifolds on the other hand, are categorised as ‘Beast’. The Ministry’s definition of a beast is a magical creature that does not have enough intelligence to decipher the laws of the magical community, nor do they share any part of the responsibility in designing said laws.” Dhruv paused to let the information sink in. “There are exceptions, however. Can you think of any creatures that are categorised as a beast but defy that description?’’
The DADA professor nodded. “I believe we all do something in our profession or life that scares us at some point but it is important that we push through that fear.” Which was a lot easier said than done but quite rewarding at the end. That suggestion painted a comical image in their mind and Dhruv laughed heartily. “Do you think that most students would find the cat-manticore adorable? Because I think I might!” The other suggestion was considered as the book was taken back. “Hmmm. Now there’s an idea. I would just need to ensure that all students know how to capture video on a Muggle device…
“I would say that’s a huge family then. Pets are family members, in my opinion. Your sister’s rabbit though, it sounds as though that’s an animal she might have gotten from Transfiguration class. Top hats to rabbits and vice versa is a part of the subject’s syllabus.” Dhruv recalled this from even during their time as a student. “Who takes care of your horse when you’re away?”
"She said that the teacher probably wanted to kill them. And that he wasn't the real teacher, and that he'd kidnapped the real teacher and pretended to be him. Is that true?" He wasn't sure... after all, his sister had shouted about it at an odd hour of the night, when she was probably half-asleep and having a bad dream. And she wasn't the most reliable narrator, either. However, when she insisted that people were trying to kill her with spiders and fake teachers and nonsense like that, she was usually mostly correct. He looked at Professor Khanna expectantly. Professors knew everything, he was sure. Did that really happen here? Brandon knew about the war, but Hogwarts to him wasn't anything like the dangerous and terrible place that had been described to him over and over.
Brandon thought very hard. "Um... centaurs and merpeople are both classified as beasts. Because hags and vampires were counted as beings, and the centaurs and merpeople didn't want to be in their group even though they know about wizarding laws." It sounded very confusing to Brandon. People got to pick their own ministry classification? The more he thought about wizarding rules, the less sense they made to him. "I want to see a cat-manticore and I bet Evy and Xander would too! And, um, all the other students." Because there were more students than just his two best friends. "You could collaborate with the muggle studies teacher to have people learn about video cameras." To Brandon, who had muggle parents and used to have a very anti-wizard father, it seemed strange that anyone wouldn't know about video cameras. But it happened a lot in wizard families, apparently.
The more that Brandon thought about his sister's rabbit coming from transfiguration class, the more sense it made to him. Why didn't she just say that? "Evy's family bought me the horse and they also take care of him. They have lots of horses. Evy also has her own horse so they got me one because I'm part of the family." He blushed thinking about it. The idea that a whole group of people liked him so much that they'd keep him around and buy him a horse to show that he could be part of their family? It made his heart all warm and happy. "My horse is named Sunshine!"

It made his heart all warm and happy. "My horse is named Sunshine!"
This made sense to Dhruv now. “I believe she was referring to the unfortunate time the Neo Alliance managed to invade Hogwarts.” So yes, Brandon’s sister had alluded to the truth. “I imagine that was a terrible time for all students and professors.” Even pets too, since their humans would have been stressed then. “Is your sister doing okay? Healing from all of that would not be easy.”
The DADA professor nodded approvingly. “Quite correct. It would seem, from an outsider’s point of view, that the Merpeople and Centaurs took offense at the suggestion of being classified with hags and vampires.” Perhaps the Ministry officials had been too afraid of Merpeople and Centaurs to disagree, or as Dhruv hoped, the officials saw the sense in the latter’s and former’s arguments. Dhruv chuckled heartily. “I have no doubt about that. Cats are awfully helpful in helping one to lift their mood. Muggles think they are very beneficial for health, but I understand if you, Evy and Xander would enjoy a cat-manticore the most.” They sent Brandon a wink. From the way the Hufflepuff talked of his friends, Dhruv assumed that Brandon had settled quite nicely in the Magical world. “That’s a good idea. I’ll just make a note of this…” Dhruv actually did this then held the book up from Brandon to see.
It might just be in Dhruv’s mind but they really thought that Brandon loved his life with Evy more than he would with his stepmother. Behind their shades, their eyes lit up. “How wonderful! Horses are magnificent.’’ This was applicable to both mundane and winged forces. They weren’t sure if Brandon knew about their fondness for winged horses and winged horse racing but this discussion wasn’t about them. “How old is Sunshine? You must miss him or her very much.”
Brandon thought deep in his heart that she probably was talking about the war, but he really didn't want to believe it. Even though he was only five or six at the time, he had always understood that if something happened during the war, it was probably awful and traumatic. He didn't like thinking about it, and he frowned. He didn't really know what to say to the next question. It wasn't at all simple. On the one hand, he didn't want to say yes, because it wouldn't be true. But saying no wasn't right either, when she'd obviously been working really hard and doing better by now. He thought about it. "Um, sort of. It's complicated. I think right now she's okay." That was probably what his sister would have said. Almost verbatim.
"But we're classified with hags and vampires, professor, aren't we?" He didn't particularly want to be in the same group as them either! Although he didn't think being classified as a being meant you were a nice being, so he supposed vampires and hags counted.
Brandon was thrilled that Professor Khanna was considering his cat-manticore suggestion. He loved cats! He had a cat, and Evy had a cat, and Ashley had a cat, so Brandon knew a lot of cats and could say confidently that cats were the best. "I bet Evy and Xander would like it just because I thought of it. But also because there are cats involved, and we all love animals! Although I think Xander likes lizards the most. But he likes cats too." Brandon was grinning now, because his best friends were his hopefully-secret crush and his new sister, and they were the best, and he could talk about them all day and never get tired. He thought that everyone should know about how great Evy and Xander were.
"I know! Horse riding is the best! Evy showed me how to do it and I showed my big sister and a lot of my friends do it too and it's so fun." He sighed happily. Brandon had two favorite things: his loved ones, and animals. Was it that obvious? "Sunshine is five and I named him sunshine because he's so friendly and calm." Naming his black horse Sunshine was far more unexpected than naming his black cat Lilith, but he didn't care. "Horses live for a long time, so he'll still be my horse when I'm an adult." Assuming of course, that nothing terrible happened to either him or Sunshine. "I love animals so much. And my family. And animals."

In a way, Dhruv realised that they felt relieved Brandon would have been young when all of that tragedy happened. Perhaps this would mean he would not have been affected as some and possibly would be able to move forward in life easily. But if Brandon’s sister had been in the midst of the Neo-Alliance’s reign… they watched the Hufflepuff think, already calculating the answer to their own question. “Remember to check in on her once in a while. She’ll need it on her bad days.”
Brandon’s mind was sharp; this was something Dhruv appreciated. “We are. All humans are, inclusive of Muggles and Squibs. How do you feel about this?” they questioned curiously.
It really was something to see Brandon light up the way he did. Clearly these particular topics {animals and his best friends} were his favourite. “You three are really close then? How many pets do you have among you?” Because it sounded as though it would be a lot. “Does Xander have a pet lizard?” Why did Dhruv feel as though they were getting close to these youngsters by just having a conversation with Brandon?
The DADA professor perhaps was most happy about Brandon’s fondness for horses. “Ever considered working with horses at some point, Brandon? It seems you’d make an excellent teacher. What are your thoughts on winged horses?” Someday, if Brandon were up for it, Dhruv would be happy to show him the ropes if they hadn’t been shown to him already. “Sunshine sounds as though he’d be Sorted into Hufflepuff too.’’ Hufflepuffs were always so full of brightness. “You’ve made a friend for life,’’ they continued earnestly, speaking from experience. “I know you’ll take good care of him and he’ll do the same for you.” That may sound funny but animals really did care for their human counterparts. “I have no doubt they love you right back. It’s great to have a strong support system in life.”

Javier hoped Kayla wouldn't be TOO disappointed that she got stuck with the potions professor for her consultation, considering potions wasn't one of the subjects she'd listed as her favorite. Oops.
Still, he knew a thing or two about universities, as well as working in both hands on jobs and jobs involving charms and such, so hopefully she'd still get some benefit out of this meeting. It was cold out, but not TOO cold, and thankfully it was rather cloudy so the sun wasn't beating down on the domes as he set up for their meeting. He'd arranged bluebell flames around the dome to make the place feel like it was indoors, and he had a number of pamphlets and handouts on universities as well as the Ministry and other organizations spread out on the small table he'd set up. He had two chairs next to the table - one for her and one for him - and now all that was left to do was wait for her to arrive.

Though potions was not her favorite subject, Kayla still liked the potions professor well enough. At least, she had no problems with him. So she did not mind that she had been assigned to him for the job consultation discussion. Perhaps it would be good that it was someone in a different subject; perhaps he would have a lot of suggestions she might not have thought of otherwise.
Only one way to find out.
