On a raised dais situated at the farthest point of the Great Hall stands a long table where the members of the Hogwarts staff sit and enjoy their meal while casting a watchful eye out on the four House tables. Each staff member has an assigned, cushioned chair to sit on throughout the duration of the feast, though the more notable out of them all is the throne-like golden chair in the centre reserved for the headmaster.

Keep in mind that you should not be wandering up to the staff table if you are not a staff member before Headmaster Winterbottom has delivered his speech. Doing so may result in the loss of house points or other appropriate consequence before you even make it back to the dorms. If you wish to speak with someone who is seated up here, you will have to wait until after the speech has been said and there is food and drink on all of the tables. Make sure to keep your visit brief though -- the staff were also waiting on the food to appear and are just as hungry as you.

After a fulfilling summer spoiling the grand-baby rotten, Marilyn was ready to return to Hogwarts for a second term teaching. Maybe it was the fact that her boys were all grown now, but there was something fulfilling about the education sector compared with charms research.

She was pleased to see too that majority of her colleagues were returning as well. It was nice to be able to develop that repertoire with the same people to really make Hogwarts a great environment.

It was quite the summer for Dhruv. Catching up with friends, taking time for themself and all the other self care routines were enough to put them in a better frame of mind for the academic year ahead. Humming softly, they cruised their way to the Staff Table. As usual, Dhruv was early but not as early as the Charms professor.

"I see you're eager for the start of the term,'' they commented, substituting the humming for words and a smile. Dhruv gracefully slid into the assigned seat, eyes sweeping the Hall. Any second now, those students would come flooding in and the Sorting would begin.

Bring it all on, Hogwarts!

No, she was not overly bubbly excited for the new term. Nope, that wasn’t Celeste at all. The astronomy professor was the more subdued, respectful older adult that she was as the eldest amongst the various staff members. Oh, who was she kidding. She had found she very much preferred the younger students of Hogwarts to her university teaching years, so she was definitely looking forward to it. Even as she had thoroughly enjoyed a summer where she could spend most of her time with her husband, kids and grandkids.

And as she approached the staff table before the Start of Term feast, it seemed like she wasn’t the only one. “Good evening,” she greeted Marilyn and Dhruv both with a smile as she moved along the table to her seat. It had been interesting to learn the woman had gone to school with her son. Alas, the other coworker who had they had lost but she certainly couldn’t begrudge Kennedy returning to the homestead with the news of an expanding family.

"Evening," Ean greeted as he passed by some of his colleagues (Marilyn, Dhruv, Celeste) before heading to his side of the table. The summer was a rush to say the least. But at least the kids of his own were close enough at the Primary School for holiday visits now.

As he examined the Hall from the Staff table, he awaited the new entries and perhaps exchange some more words among his colleagues.

Here they go. Another term was about to start. Hadleigh's third and she was ready for it. She was down three siblings, a cousin and a nephew at the house tables today but it was alright. Each and everyone of them were all moving onto bigger and better things and she couldn't be prouder of them all. This year she still had her own three children, a cousin, many nieces and nephews, plus many many more young minds to nurture.

"Hello, hello, hello. How is everyone this evening?" The brunette smiled warmly at her fellow colleagues as she joined them up on the dais, taking her assigned seat at the table.

Another year at Hogwarts had come. Norman entered the great hall the same way he had for the past seven terms, quietly and methodically moving through the hall to his spot at the far end of the staff dais. His bluish-green eyes scanned the room as he went, monitoring for any signs of shenanigans, people acting strangely, or unwanted guests. No matter how many years it had been, he never forgot the Neo Alliance takeover his first term, nor the possibility that the next threat to the school could come when least expected.

So far, he saw nothing out of the ordinary. Just the usual new students being sorted, old ones conversing at their house tables, and colleagues at the dais. Not a lot of newcomers this term, he mused to himself as he approached the dais. That in and of itself was unusual. The only thing unchanging about Hogwarts was change itself.

“Good evening, all,” he greeted his colleagues with a slight smile as he took his seat. He arrived just in time to hear Hady’s question, but she was at the other end of the table. He gave a nod in lieu of a verbal response to avoid shouting across the hall. He was fine, thanks. “Everyone have a good summer?” he made the obligatory attempt at small talk, the question directed at anyone who heard it.

Tapio, who was usually in a good mood at the Opening Feast (or at pretty much any time, for that matter), entered the staff entrance to the Great Hall with a frown on his face and clutching a long parchment letter in one hand. He spared a quick glance and a brief smile for the Hufflepuff Table, then continued on to his seat. "Good evening, good evening," he greeted the colleagues who were already present, but once seated he started reading the letter with a look of fierce concentration.

Eager for the term? She gave Dhruv a side-eye glance, but before she could answer him, everyone else seemed to arrived with their good evenings and all that. She nodded at each of her colleagues with a "good evening," at each of them in turn, before turning back to Dhruv ~~(him and Hadleigh were directly on either side of her after all)~~ "Eager because I'm early? I'd prefer to think just more prepared. Second year teaching ought to be a breeze compared to the first, don't you think?"

With one year down, Wilber Winterbottom was looking forward to his second term as Headmaster. The calming demeanor of the Headmaster was apparently just what Hogwarts needed. And the welcoming feast wouldn’t be complete though without him imparting some fun wisecracks on the faculty. "Evening everyone. Looking forward another great year, I hope." He turned his eyes on each of the house tables momentarily before looking at his staff. "Can anyone care to tell me how the moon cut its hair?" The question this time was one for the Astronomy professor, but anyone of course could answer.

Alas though it was time for his welcoming speech, as the sorting was wrapping up and dinner was due to be served. Standing from his seat he clasped his hands together and began, "Good evening young people. Welcome back to those returning to these esteemed halls. I must say you all look radiant to be back at Hogwarts this evening! Each moment is a chance to begin anew and your professors are gathered here eager once more to share their expertise with you. We must also give a hearty welcome back to Andrew Burke as your flying professor this year. "

"Speaking of sharing the expertise, Hogwarts will be playing host this term a special event that I like to call an Employment Gala, pardon an old man’s whimsy. Look for more on this gala, this job fair, please very soon. And please put on your most respectable hats that you can wear. Look to your notice boards for the cornucopia of opportunities to prepare you for this gala."

Wilbur paused trying to consider his next words. "Enjoy each moment. There is much excitement to unfold in these walls but I mustn’t keep blathering on as your stomachs keep rumbling. So please, eat and welcome back … or just welcome to those here for the first time." Which there would only be one first time. "And tomorrow, we start anew on this Hogwarts journey."

Not long after they had taken their seat, more colleagues joined the table. They greeted each in turn with simple verbal greetings or with nods and smiles. They chose to opt out of answering the dad joke from Winterbottom because as usual, Dhruv was sure they would not get the punch line. This evening, the DADA professor was more content to listen to the chatter around than join in. Sometimes it was quite nice to have quiet moments. They did, however, indicate to Hady that they were doing well before their mind drifted to wondering how much longer the speech was made. Dhruv was feeling especially peckish this evening.

For now they’d be distracted by the Sorting Ceremony and Marilyn. “I like that train of thought,’’ they remarked approvingly. “It’s a good way to approach the term. Agreed, since I’ve adjusted to Hogwarts as a Professor. It should be an interesting term with all that’s planned.” Both in general for Hogwarts and for what they’d planned for DADA.

With the speech now completed, Dhruv was only too happy to dive into dinner. Tomorrow would be here before they knew it, and with it, lessons. Dhruv was quite looking forward to getting theirs off to a start.
