| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Was she nervous...or was she excited? Anna supposed she was nervicited since she couldn't really distinguish between the two feelings. She might have felt less nervous if she had been paired with someone in her own year, or better yet a friend. But she did suppose that this was as good a time as any to make new friends or at least get to know peers that she kind of knew a whole lot better.
Anna was not...particularly gifted when it came to dueling. The one thing she had on her side was that she was pretty unpredictable and her spontaneous bursts of spellcasting could take an opponent by surprise. Also that she was fairly nimble, so she could dodge and tumble out of the path of oncoming spells with ease. At least...this had been true for the dueling club meetings she had remembered to attend. Her spontaneousness also made her pretty forgetful so she was not in attendance of dueling clubs, all her extra curriculars for that matter, as much as she intended to be. But hey! She was here now! Bouncy curls and rainbow knee socks with a bit of frill at the top and all!
Flashing a bright smile towards Professor Khanna, the third year then turned her attention to her opponent (one Sable Armstrong, nickname pending) and offered an eager wave. "I think we're meant to bow first, right?" she chirped while accidentally dropping her wand while she brandished it. "Oopsies," she laughed nervously as she stumbled forward to retrieve it. "That wasn't my bow, I promise. Just have myself some butterfly fingers."

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict The smile from Professor Khanna had been returned by a grin from Sable Ileana as she had arrived at the arena for her scheduled duel. Excited wasn’t necessarily the mood the blonde was in, in her opinion. She felt much too strategic on the matter of this whole assignment to count as actually excited. Plus, she was less enthusiastic when it came to duelling in general when compared with Vera and she was much too aware of that fact. Duelling was just another aspect to her piracy as far as she was concerned. Most everything was, really.
Anna had gotten a smile and a wave as well, as she had gotten into position across from the younger girl. She didn’t know her exactly, but she knew Vera knew her. That made her good people, in Sable Ileana’s eyes. She trusted Bestie’s opinions on people, and she wasn’t quite as bothered by the fact she hadn’t been paired with one of her friends because of that. Years notwithstanding. The blonde was well aware there were likely younger kids who were better at duelling than she was. But creativity was important too. “Mhm”, she replied, gesturing slightly with her wand in hand to encompass the room before worrying about the actual start of the duel. One could acknowledge everyone, after all. Plus, it meant she was allowing the little mishap to pass by as if unseen. Although she had noticed it, it wasn’t a big deal. “Butterfly fingers are allowed. And course that’s not your bow.” And she swept into a theatric bow just to demonstrate. Pirate queens knew how to show respect.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf There would be a billion and two questions had Anna any inkling that her dueling opponent also identified as pirate royalty. Though, at least for today, Anna's fantasy was leaning harder into cursebreaker auror territory than it was pirate, but it really was only a matter of hours before she swung back around to it. She also was likely to feel a little less nervous since that meant she had found another star sister and you really did not need to be nervous around family. Anna did not offer a fantastical bow, but instead pulled on either side of her school skirt and offered a very deep and very cutesy curtsey before jumping backwards a few paces and readjusting her hold on her wand.
Truth be told...she hadn't actually ever dueled anyone and any time dueling practice had come up either in class or she had remembered to attend Dueling Club meetings...weeeeeeeeell...she tended to talk to a lot and sometimes no one so much as even pulled their wands before time was up. Other times she was dueling against very proficient duelers who basically had her defeated in a couple of spells because of her butterfly fingers. Which reminded her! "Oh...wait just a moment, please," she said as she scrambled to point her wand at one hand and then the other. "Prehenso," she hummed as she performed the spell on each hand for good measure. Her charmswork still left much to be desired but she could just feel that this time she had done a better than decent job on the spell. May actually hold on to her wand for the entirety of this duel - which was really her only goal. "Okay. I'm good now...I think!"

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict Questions were always welcome, any time anyone found out about her particular proclivities. As long as they weren’t intended to be followed by an eye roll or anything else that meant she wasn’t being taken seriously. Dueling was a serious matter, after all. Not that she’d entirely paid enough attention to actually getting skilled in any of the tactics that made one particularly adept at anything other than reckless abandon. Except she did know how to shield herself, and she was working on strategy and everything.
It was probably a good thing she’d been paired up with Anna, really. Pirate fascination or not. The request to wait for a bit wasn’t taken badly either, even if she was already prepared and ready for whatever was thrown her way. She didn’t want things to be too easy, either. “Okay good!” Ready, set, go…

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf The Gripping Charm was such a funny spell, funny in that it made her fingers and palms all tingly. It may just be her imagination because the spell really wasn't meant to have such side effects - or maybe she just performed it poorly. Either was possible knowing Anna. In any case, it was a very handy spell for people like Anna who had a hard time holding on to things. A shame you couldn't use the spell to hold on to memories though...
Shaking her head, mostly, free from distractions...the Hufflepuffle had sort of expected the other girl to cast the next spell since she had just performed her on preparatory spell. Maybe that didn't count? Anna was obviously not very fluent in dueling etiquette. Unless you were just counting good sportsmanship! She didn't mind long silences when she was in listening mode - sometimes friends just needed you to sit with them and be present and not talk or break the silence - but this was not listening mode and therefore the long silence (of all of 10 seconds) felt like forever. SO ... she needed to cast a proper spell. An offensive spell? Probably offensive since she had already performed a defensive one...but what did she choose? She didn't want to do anything that might actually hurt the older girl...maybe she was allergic to flowers by any chance? Anna could maybe just conjure (poorly) a whooooooooole bunch of flowers. But that was also pretty mean and she could possibly be sending her dueling partner to the hospital wing because of an allergic reaction.
Why was dueling SO hard?
Maybe she could find a happy medium? Like...something kind of offensive but also a little defensive...Anna was mostly thinking about what would make dueling even harder for herself at this point, moral compass not withstanding. "...um....um...um...um..." she muttered under her breath as she prepared her wand and gave is a meek little flourish. "Obscuro?"
It really ought to have been more commanding and less questioning. Oh well.

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict It hadn’t been entirely just good dueling etiquette on Sable Ileana’s end that had led to her allowing Anna to officially start off the duel. It hadn’t been entirely strategy, either. Finding out the opponent’s weaknesses and such. Enzo would probably be disappointed with that, but mostly the wait had just been the blonde distracting herself with ideas of how she’d like the duel to go. She didn’t want to lose, after all. Even if captains did occasionally ger defeated. They’d just come back stronger. She’d just come back stronger. In a Gryffindor way, of course.
Plus, she didn’t think preparatory spells did count as part of the duel. Nor did she think too much silence was usual, aside from the possibility of nonverbal casting. Something made her suspect that wasn’t what was going on here though, but she had stayed vigilant just in case. Maybe Anna’s accident-proneness was a front. But she doubted that too.
The unspoken question behind the spell once it had broken the silence seemed to reveal that, too. It wasn’t hard to block the blindfold spell with a simple “Protego”.
But it also led to a bit of a dilemma when it came to a response. She didn’t want to hurt the little Hufflepuff after all, and therefore it meant she had to scour her memory for a good spell. Not the best when her mind was mostly on other topics, but finally she flourished her wand again, following her shield charm. “Glacius Duo!” Mostly she aimed at the ground below Anna, rather than risking freezing the girl herself. Etiquette.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Anna was none the wiser. Though she had sort of been hoping that whoever her dueling partner was, especially considering they were older, would take the lead and she could learn some more through observation since they had more experience and exposure. In theory anyway. Anna didn't mind taking the lead when the situation called for it and she was used to flying by the seam of her trousers too.
Was she surprised that her spell was reflected and, perhaps, even easily so? Not particularly. Anna was well aware that she had not been confident in the wand movement and even less confident with the inflexion and rhythm of the incantation. At least here there was no chance of being squirted with vinegar! Well, maybe there was a chance if Sable Ileana Armstrong conjured some. Was that possible? Was it a variation of Aguamenti? Vingamenti? The Hufflepuffle was now very preoccupied with this and not even half paying attention to the duel at hand. So it was lucky that the Gryffindor wasn't aiming directly at the third year but just in front of her.
"Woaaaaaaaaaah!" Anna squealed, partly coming back to the present and oogling the frozen portion of the stage. It made her think of ice skating and Aurora and how very much she was looking forward to her friend teaching her how to do it with more grace than Anna currently possessed - which was to say: none at all. "I'm going to have to remember that one!"
She was going to bring the frozen lake inside! The Great Hall would make for a spectacular ice rink!
The ice did not give her much room to move though and Anna would rather not move any further back and possibly fall off the back end of the dueling stage. So, how did one get rid of ice? You melted it, of course! "Incendio!" she chirped with a wave of her wand towards the stage. Thankfully, her glee from possibility kept her in toe and the spell did not go flying off the hinges at all and humbly focused on the iced area only until it melted and left a nice wet puddle in its place. And then she had a thought...about fire...dragons breathed fire and there was a certain spell she had been desperately trying to perfect recently...
"Oh oh oh oh OKAY...OH...I know!" she chirped while bouncing back and forth from left foot to right foot. Wand held safely in her still Gripping Charm effected hand, Anna's wand slashed downwards towards the puddle of water. "Draconifors!" Water counted as an object, right? It was a noun! The water began to bubble as though it were boiling, which meant some of the water evaporated, and lifted from the stage and into the air where it began to morph and form into something that....well...maybe if you squinted at it it might look more like a dragon and less a lumpy mass with a tail. Still progress compared to the last time she had tried! The translucent watery blob began to float with a bit more urgency towards the older girl. There were two elongated orbs on either side that were meant to be wings and they could be seen flapping a bit if you paid attention. Eyes wide and her feet tapping giddily, Anna's mouth hung open just as the quaffle sized pseudo dragon watery blob's mouth area opened and spit some lukewarm water towards the Gryffindor's face.

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict It wasn’t due to any hesitation or fear of being the one to start things off that she had held back until Anna had started the duel. Nor was it the fact she was dueling a younger student and therefore wanted to make sure she was being careful. Sable Ileana did feel like she ought to hold back a little because of that. She didn’t want to hurt Anna, whether by accident or otherwise. Even given the fact the professor was watching so they’d probably keep things from getting too bad. It was all strategy, and trying to rein in any recklessness she might want to fall back on. It would be so easy to do that, but that wasn’t strategic at all. She wanted to be a better dueler, after all, not a reckless one.
Nor had it ever occurred to her that there was even a spell for shooting vinegar at someone. She figured she hadn’t paid attention in that lesson if there was. Just as she wasn’t entirely paying attention to the fact Anna very much wasn’t paying attention to the spell she had cast. Her attention was entirely on not accidentally freezing her opponent, and the squeal seemed to tell her she’d at least accomplished that goal. Although she wasn’t entirely aware that it had led to other thoughts in the Hufflepuff’s head.
She sort of expected that the ice wouldn’t really hinder her much, either. Just a guess, really, given the earlier revelation that Anna could be a bit accident-prone, but it did seem like the younger girl was trying to take the duel seriously.
She’d steeled herself a little at the use of the fire charm, though. In case it came her way, but she was already thinking ahead at the same time. Pirates weren’t taken by surprise, and the intent was just to melt the ice…Or maybe it wasn’t. Brown eyes had narrowed as the water had started to bubble, but she still hadn’t expected a dragon to morph out of the bubbles even though she knew the spell that had been cast. Okay, maybe there was a bit of underestimating going on, but still. A dragon? Even one that looked like it was just a glorified globe of water.
First she turned her wand on herself. “Impervius.” Luckily the charm held as the jet of lukewarm water came her way, not that she minded being a little wet. It was just water, but it could be more than that. Maybe. She wasn’t entirely certain of the proper spell to counter a water blob dragon, either. She took the few seconds before the blob had considered another attack to come up with something, though. “Ventus!”, she cast, pointing her wand at the blob. If anything, she hoped it would repel the blob. Break it apart if she was lucky. Freezing it again might’ve worked too, but she wanted to show she knew other spells. And she wanted to prevent another stream of water her way. Bonus.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf If ONLY Anna were truly taking dueling seriously. Which was not to say that she wasn't and actively out to make a mockery of things because that would be mean and wildly unfair to both her dueling partner and Professor Khanna, but it also fell deliciously close to the land of make believe and imagination. Anna was hardly a fighter, unless you asked Daniel and then you might know that she did have a little spunk to her words when the situation was juuuuuuuuust right, and more than that was the fact that her spell casting was distracted at best. Perhaps, someday, her whimsy would turn out to be her greatest asset as a dueller since...well...few would expect such passive forms of offense in such a setting. Maybe. Who knew. It was unlikely she would ever know herself but she was very appreciative of the whole experience and opportunity!
The Hufflepuffle was not even sure what spell the Gryffindor had cast first, but it sure sounded like she had just made herself invincible which was REALLY impressive and left Anna puzzling over what sort of spell she could even hope to cast now to have any effect. The second charm she knew and had used herself while propelling paper airplanes and other paper creations about the common room - or just a stray leaf on the grounds to see just how long she could keep it up in the air before her aim went awry or she simply grew too tired to continue. Did Sable want to play that game with her little blobby pseudo water dragon?! Anna found herself tickled by the idea...but also uncertain that she could cast the spell with enough delicacy to keep it in tact and she was not about to be an enchanted water dragon murder...or slayer. Slayer was not on her imagination BINGO card. Alas, all the while the third year was bouncing around in her own thoughts...the water blob floated and tumbled in the air closer and closer to her. Her eyes crossed and refocused a bit too late, but that did not stop her from working on just the tiniest bit of reflexes. "ProTAGo!" she chirped, utterly butchery the incantation and erecting not a translucent shield but rather conjuring what resembled little jolts of neon blue lightning from her wand. Hardly effective in stopping the water blob dragon and but her face sure was good at it! *splash*
Not soaked but no longer dry, Anna wiped her face with the long sleeves of her robes and laughed a little. This much be how flowers felt when they got their morning dew or were watered in the afternoon on a particularly warm day: refreshing. And thankfully thoughts of flowers had distracted her from the fact that she had indeed become a water blob dragon slayer on accident. Flowers though....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Wand at the ready, or as ready as could be as Anna Walles, the curly haired well intended mess of a human pointed her wand at a few spots in front of Sable's shoes...and also kind of AT Sable's shoes but it was mostly accidental. "Herbifors!" she chirped, hoping that at least one of the spots would produce nice tall flowers that might block her opponent's view since the whole attempt at a blindfold had not go over so well. Beginning with patches of grass dotted with wildflowers her enthusiasm was certainly motivating the spell this time as more and more flowers began popping up (like daisies!) on the stage and growing upwards towards Sable taller and taller until they were waist high and continued to grow.
Yes, she knew that usually people cast this spell at people's hair...but Anna thought it horrendous to mess with a lady's hair without permission so the stage (and maybe Sable's shoes too?) would just have to suffice for now.
