Sophia was bored. Homework was boring, and it wasn't a mealtime, and her nails had already been painted a pretty pattern of pink and green, and there was nothing else to do but stare into the Lake. Which is exactly what she was doing. Sitting on a few textbooks (so she'd be taller), she leaned her head on the window. Would the squid swim by? Or some merpeople? She sure hoped so.

Maisey didn’t care what the other girls thought about the windows in the common room. She LOVED them. She did love sunlight and bright colors just as much as the other girls. What girl didn’t? She moved a little closer to the window, peering out into the murky green abyss. She was so focused on looking out in hopes of seeing something. She didn’t realize that Sophia was doing the same thing right across from her. ”Sophia? Hi!” She grinned at her dormmate. Did she see anything yet?

What a LOVELY day this was turning out to be. First, Bart had been able to capture a small school of fish with ease, meaning he got a bigger breakfast than he normal did, so he was extra cheerful. He'd had some good conversations with the merpeople after that, and then did some sunbathing. Very rarely did one get the chance to sunbathe in March in England! It was such a pleasant day, and now he figured he'd swim some laps in the lake.

As he swam by, he noticed there were some STUDENTS in the windows to the common room. Such a shame the other common rooms didn't have windows into his world - he enjoyed surprising them with a little 'how do you do' every once in a while. Today was one of those days!

"Hello ladies!" the giant squid gurgled as he swam by. Could they hear him through the bubbles and the thick glass? Probably not, but he waved one of his tentacles anyways and then did a few backflips in the water just for show.

Sophia turned and smiled at her friend Maisey. "Hi, Maisey!" she said. "Can you see anything?" She was starting to wonder if they'd even be able to see if something did swim by.

The first year returned her attention to the window and briefly shrieked in surprise. That was the squid!! And it was...waving at them?? Or was it just wiggling its tentacle as part of swimming? She didn't know, but she waved back anyhow. She put her face as close to the glass as she could, squishing her nose a little. "Look, the squid is doing flips!!" Could Maisey see that?
