Go-Go Racing on the Grounds Now was the moment that the Professor at the least had been looking forward to, a little friendly action to kick off Spring and the relieve some steam before exams drew nearer and nearer. On one of the steeper hills among the grounds stood Professor Feirgrund. Beside him behind a sign was a sorted row of miniature cars in multiple colors to the student's liking. This was go-go racing! But first came the waiting before any --- OOC: Welcome! Feel free to choose a car or specific spot nearby to stand by and chat amongst selfs for the time being. :) |
Dhruv was not too old for a little Go-Go racing. Granted, their six foot frame just may encounter some hindrance in the form of locating the perfect car that would fit them but that wasn’t an issue magic couldn’t solve, even if this happened to be a Muggle Studies activity. Regardless, they were there now, surveying the cars in the assortment of colours. “Never have been much of a good driver,’’ they informed Ean mildly, not a hint of concern in their voice. As easily as Dhruv found it to focus on casting the most difficult of wandless magic, they found it excruciatingly maddening to focus on roadways. Luckily Go-Go racing didn’t necessarily warrant such concentration! |
Desiree had never tried go-go racing before, but if it was anything like the bumper cars at the carnival, it sounded fun! And maybe it would teach her something useful for when she took her driving test. Channeling Lightning McQueen today (because what other Disney character was a better fit for a racing activity?)The dark-haired Hufflepuff arrived dressed in a red jumpsuit and matching jacket with a lightning bolt and number 95 on the front. Looking around, she saw Professors Feirgrund and Khanna and - wait, was she the only student here? Weird! Did everybody else forget? Smiling politely, she greeted the professors with a little wave. “Hello, Professor Feirgrund and Professor Khanna,” she said. As she waited for more people to arrive, she glanced at the mini cars. Ooh, they were sort of cute! Nice colors too! She hoped there was - there was a pink one! Yay! She hoped she got that one! |
Go-go racing sounded like a terrible idea. It sounded dangerous! Why would the school make an activity for it? But Brandon had been rather quiet recently, after a two-week absence from class due to (quite newsworthy in the most literal way possible) family problems, and a friend had convinced him that socializing and excitement would be good for him. So he was present. Present and doubtful. "Do we all have to try this or can I just... watch?" he asked both professors. He couldn't decide whether trying it would be more or less scary than watching other people try it. It was definitely scary in general. "Maybe I'd try it too. If I want." But only if he wanted to. Or if someone pressured him into it. |
Exams were looming over Maria's head and she felt like she spent most afternoons with her nose stuck in a book revising or trying to avoid breaking anything as she practiced spells. To spend a spring afternoon outside riding a car sounded fun and a much needed relief. Maria had never tried the bumper cars at the carnival so this sounded super fun. Arriving at the event Maria was dressed in comfy clothes and her big black curly hair pulled back in a poney tail. It wouldn't be good if she had hair in her eyes when she steered a car. Waving to the professors she smiled sunnily "Hello Professor Feirgrund and Professor Khanna will you two be driving the cars too?" Turning her attention to the other students present so far she greeted her peers equally sunnily "Hi Desiree! Hi Brandon!" |
'This is ridiculous.' That's what Daniel kept thinking as his feet dragged him up a steep hill toward the cars. He used to enjoy driving his toy electric car around the manor he lived in as a child, but driving one of these now seemed childish. So why was he not turning around and returning to the castle? After all, it wasn't mandatory and he still had an essay to write for Transfiguration. He wasn't sure, but he did know that the red car he had in his line of eyesight, resembling his own childhood car, looked completely stupid. "Is this going to be a race?" Because if it was, he wasn't just going to win. He was going to destroy all of them. |
Oooooooh! Did Professor Feirgrund know how much fun this sounded?! The fifth year made her way down towards the group with the brightest of smiles on her face, her long blonde hair pulled into two french braids. She was wearing blue coveralls with a white shirt underneath that had a flower print on it, yup she was still very much rocking flowers whenever she could. "Hello, Professor Feirgrund, Professor Kanna! Hey everyone!" Keighley waved excitedly at them all, very much bouncing on the balls of her feet as she looked at the miniature cars. |
Hope greeted everyone cheerfully when she arrived, but once that was done, she found herself staring awkwardly at the little cars. Go go racing had sounded fun in her dorm earlier when she'd read the notice, but now she was getting nervous. It hadn't occurred to her exactly what go go racing was, nor that it would be done in--automobiles, or whatever they were called. Hope had absolutely no experience with cars--her wizarding village back in Virginia was somewhat retro, by both Muggle and Wizarding standards, and Hope was afraid she'd look foolish and ignorant if she admitted she had no idea how these things worked. "Uh, will you be giving instructions on how to use these?" she finally ventured to ask timidly. |
"No kidding," Ean looked at Dhruv. While he himself specialized in muggle lifestyle and objects, driving itself was a skill in its own. "I have my daughter to thank on keeping from getting rusty with this," Then adding, "You're welcome to ride passenger if you're not up for driving," Hopefully, his driving wouldn't take the fun out for them. "Hello, Miss Marchand," Feirgrund greeted. "There's plenty of cars for everyone here," Ah there was Master Fox, the possible future Healer, He didn't want to join? "Not a problem, you could watch here or even ask someone if you can join as a passenger," Driving can be overwhelming, after all. "Hello, Miss Dolph," Ean glanced at Dhruv, "Well, I'll be driving around but not to race," He wanted to be sure any injuries happened could be taken care of right away... and it was enjoyable to ride, after all. A race? "It sure is," Feirgrund nodded at Master Yoon. It was quite a neat coincidence at the Hufflepuff house arriving early enough. "Hello there, Miss Anders," Giving one of his little salutes to beckon over. When Miss Archard addressed her concerns with Feirgrund, he nodded in understanding, "Of course, now that you mentioned it. Seems like a good time as any," "Welcome, welcome, everyone. Go on ahead and stand beside a car or pick a spot to watch," His voice amplified enough to get everyone's attention. "Since a number of you will have your first experience in these cars, I can show you how it's done. Unlike an actual muggle car that requires more maneuvering than simply steering, these cars are motorized already and will start up after pressing this button here." Showing the button near the steering wheel. "The little platforms at the bottom near your feet to rest are called pedals. The left pedal is the brake to help stop the car from going. It's best to hold the brake down while starting up the car until you're ready to let go of the brake. You would use the left pedal to slow down the car to a full stop once you're already going. The right platform will accelerate. It's best used if you had already slowed down the car and need to speed up again or to keep going," If there any other questions on using the car, he had no problem any more. "So we'll be having a good fashion race. Before getting to the rules on the race, let's get some practice in with using the brakes or you can decide on riding passenger or sitting on the sidelines cheering on." They had some time to get comfortable, after all. --- OOC: Thank you for waiting, all! You have near 24 hours to have a little test drive or ask to partner up. Tomorrow we'll get started with the race and rules. :D |
Open to a partner ^_^ Oh, there was everybody! Desiree smiled, waving cheerfully to the other students who arrived after her. Phew! For a minute, she thought she was going to be the only student here! “Hi, Brandon! Hi, Maria! Hi, Daniel! Hi, Keighley!” she greeted. As her bright blue eyes scanned the area, she noticed that all of the other students gathered were fellow Hufflepuffs. Hmm, weird! Was this a Hufflepuff convention or something? Maybe the other three houses didn’t like go carts… or muggle studies. Nope, never mind. A Ravenclaw first year (Hope) showed up. “Hi!” Desiree greeted the younger girl with a smile and a wave. Desiree nodded politely in reply to Professor Feirgrund’s greeting. She knew there would be enough cars to go around. The real question was would there be enough pink cars for everyone who wanted one? She listened intently to the instructions, hardly surprised to hear that they were going to have a race. Really, what else could you do with go carts? Okay, so start the car with a button, left pedal to brake, right pedal to accelerate… What were the odds that this would be as simple as Professor Feirgrund made it sound? Only one way to find out, she supposed. Desiree beelined for the pink car as fast as she could, eager to give it a try, She got into the driver’s seat, foot on the brake, but didn’t start the car just yet. “Does anyone want to ride with me?” she asked, looking around at the group. |
An offspring would do exactly that, Dhruv thought. “She keeps you on your toes, I see?’’ they replied knowingly. There might have been a moment when they breathed a sigh of relief at Ean’s offer. “Appreciated. The master can show the apprentice how it’s done.” Ah, here came the students. “Hello there, Ms. Marchand!” Why did her outfit look familiar? Hmmm. There wasn’t time for Dhruv to dwell on it because next came Brandon. “I would think the choice is yours,’’ was all they said kindly because really, this was Ean activity and they were not looking to steal the spotlight “Hallo, Ms. Dolph. Unless you want to see my atrocious driving....” Next, they offered Daniel a smile before glancing at Ean. Was it a race that their colleague had in mind? The bouncy Keighley also received a smile. “Hello, Ms. Anders.” To Hope, they replied, “I’m sure Professor Feirgrund will.” Dhruv stood back, watching the Ean explain everything. They couldn’t help themself by becoming completely drawn into the explanations. Muggle objects were truly fascinating. Of course, these were just the basics, which they were familiar with but still… it was a nice refresher. They hadn’t been near a car, real or otherwise, in a very, very long time. While Ean’s offer stuck in their mind, if it came to any student not being able to secure a partner, they’d step in. |
Brandon didn't want to drive. But he didn't want someone else to be driving him, because he didn't trust anyone. But he didn't want to be left out either. Why did people ever leave decisions up to him? He looked unsurely between the two professors, then climbed into Desiree's car. "Have you ever driven anything before?" he asked carefully. Were there seatbelts in these? Was this safe? "Do you think these cars have any magic charms preventing them from accidents? What's the top speed on this?" He hesitated. "Sorry." He didn't want to imply that Desiree couldn't drive. But he did NOT trust these things, and he HAD to think about all the possibilities before he felt better. Maybe Desiree was a good driver. Or, maybe she was the best driver, which was less reassuring but still preferable. It wasn't a real car, anyway. It probably couldn't go fast enough to be dangerous. He hoped. You know what, he was just going to trust Desiree and try not to think about the safety involved. He didn't want to talk himself out of this before it even started. |
"Always," Ean chuckled. "Especially when she gets the boys, my god-sons, to team up," He would love to share more about his kids to Dhruv with their great ear and presence. But it was time to get started. Though if they managed to jump into the kart with him, more time then. "Alright everyone, hopefully you found a good spot. For the race, we'll have a nice go around from the hill here down to the marker near Professor Hernandez's Hut. The first three to reach the end and back will get a trophy of their own with some points," Sounds easy, yeah? "As for how you get down there, as long as I don't see any wand out or lips moving that resemble throwing a spell at other or using a spell to increase the odds. A friendly bump here and there is okay, but don't get carried away driving others off course into the forest. There will be occasional bumps and rising poles in the ground that could slow you down, so be careful. If you experience any trouble, feel free to wave and we'll take care of it." "Now... on your marks..." Giving them time to get situated in their cars and/or getting acquainted with the seats and partners, etc. "Ready annnd go!" --- OOC: Thank you for waiting, all! Take as many posts as necessary to cross the finish line and then back up the start line. All posts will take place in this thread despite mentioning the Hut. Just be leery of any obstacles along the way. |

The other questions made her think. She had no idea what the top speed on these cars was, though she was sure it was slower than a real one. If they were meant to go as fast as a real car, wouldn’t they be using those instead? As for the cars being charmed, she thought it could go either way. Magical safety precautions were the norm at Hogwarts, but this was a Muggle Studies activity. She shrugged as Brandon’s voice jerked her out of her thoughts. “No, it’s okay,” she said. “Sorry I don’t know the answer to your questions.” Desiree listened intently, hanging on the Feirgrund’s every word as he explained the course. Okay, so down the hill to the marker at Hernandez’s hut. That sounded pretty straightforward so far - Wait, what? They were allowed to bump each other?! Ordinarily Desiree might think that sounded fun, but she didn’t want the bumps to scare her housemate. She made up her mind that she would not let anyone bump her car! As Feirgrund said go, Desiree turned to Brandon with a smile. “Ready?” she said. “We’ll start out nice and slow.” She wanted to win the race, but not if it meant scaring a friend! After waiting a minute or two, she pushed the button to start the car and eased her foot off the brake. The car started forward at a steady pace. “Tell me if you see any obstacles.” She’d keep an eye out herself, of course, but two pairs of eyes were better than one, right? |
