It’s a cold, somewhat humdrum afternoon in mid-December. The winter holidays are just around the corner, but don’t let that distract you. There are still a few days of school left before the break, and Professor Carton expects your full attention.
The professor stands in the doorway, waiting to welcome the students. As you step, the first thing you’ll notice is that the classroom is toasty warm in contrast to the cold outside. The second thing is that the setup looks the same yet different. The desks are arranged in rows as usual; the unusual thing is the top hat sitting on each desk. A similar hat sits on a small covered table at the front of the room. “Hello, welcome in!” Professor Carton greets the arrivals. “Feel free to examine the contraption at the front of the room; you may touch it if you wish.”
Upon closer inspections, the students will learn that it’s not an ordinary hat on an ordinary table. The hat has a false bottom leading to a secret compartment under the table, hidden by the tablecloth. What could this object be? Only time will tell!
OOC: Welcome to Term 62’s Transfiguration lesson! Please keep in mind that while this is the first OOC lesson, your students would’ve had classes with Carton since the start of the term IC. If you haven’t already done so, please read the class rules & expectations. We’ll begin in 24-30 HOURS CLASS HAS STARTED!.
Lesson Progression: Q1: What is the use of the contraption at the front of the room? How could we use magic for the same purpose? Main Activity Q2: How might a transfigured animal behave differntly than a real one? Would that make bonding easier or harder? Mini Activity
Before starting with her spells, Ash grabbed a top hat from the front and put it on. Was it cool? No. Was it fun? Yes. She went back to her spot, working through the incantation(LAP-i-fors. LAP-ifors. LAPifors? lapifors... lapifors). When she thought she was ready, she pointed at the hat on her desk. "Lapifors." The top hat grew ears on the underside of the brim, and it disturbed her. She reversed the transfiguration, and tried again. Now there was a rabbit shaped like a top hat... nope nope nope. Third time was the charm, and her top hat turned fully into a rabbit. Um... she was not trying that again. She pet the bunny, quietly apologizing for wishing it into existence and making it go through several faulty transfigurations.

Okay.
Aria hadn’t literally crossed her fingers but she needn’t worry because her top hat turned into the most adorable little brown bunny! She let out a tiny, excited squeal before scooping the bunny up into her arms. “Hi, you precious little thing!” There was some fussing on her part because she was so taken with the little creature. But Aria also knew that all her time couldn’t be spent doing this, plus she did want to get a little more practice.
So the bunny was set down on her desk before she made her way to the box to collect another hat. The sixth year was sure that Carton wouldn’t mind. “Professor, what are we going to be doing with the rabbits after the lesson?” A hat was selected and placed on her head in a slightly crooked manner as she waited on Carton’s reply.

Caes' thoughts were threatening to drift off outside the room. Aria sure knew how to wake him up with suggesting what could help with transfiguring the hat. He picked the hat up to examine it. "Lap..ee.fors.." he repeated softly whilst examining it before planning it back down. Since he was told he could work with the hat on, he went up to get one to wear.
He could see not far off Luther managing to have a hat-skinned rabbit. "Not going to lie, that was a nice rabbit you made," He commented when Luther walked over to exchange for another hat to try on. Then walking back to his desk to practice with the hat on, "How about that, we match," He smiled at Aria. Seeing now she had a baby rabbit to keep in her arms.
Now he had to concentrate. He honestly didn't have a preference for a type of rabbit. Maybe a black one to match the hat as long as it didn't maintain the same material for its fur. Tapping at the hat with his wand, he gave it a try. "Lapifors!"
So instead of pulling rabbits out of hats, they were turning hats into rabbits? Evan smiled a bit bemused at the idea and reminiscing at how 10 year old version of him could never have even imagined this as a possibility. Taking his wand out and focusing on his hat, Evan forwent the practicing of the wand movements (point was easy, he was confident he could do that sufficiently) but in his usual preparation for a spell, he took a moment to practice the incantation.
"LAP-i-fors, LAP-i-fors, LAP-i-fors". He enunciated each try carefully, before deciding the word was fairly straightforward as well. Using his wand, he pointed it at the top hat in front of him, picturing a pure white bunny with big floppy ears. "Lapifors." A flash of green light and there sitting upon the desk was a bunny, where a hat had been. The ears were... a bit bigger and floppier than most rabbits he'd ever seen, but overall it was a cute little creature. Evan reached out to scratch behind one of the ears, listening for the response to Aria's question. Would they have to undo the spell?

Ah yes! Aria did love a good top hat!
Norman had just finished untransfiguring Starriver’s hat-rabbit and put the hat back in the box as McLeod approached his desk. He was mildly surprised to see the girl select another hat when she’d already successfully transformed a cute little brown bunny… until she placed it on her head. Ohh… No, he didn’t mind the students wearing hats, as long as there were enough to use for the actual transfiguration process.
He considered her question for a second. He’d initially planned to wait until the end of class to make this announcement, but he supposed there was no harm in doing it early. Revealing the rabbits’ fate wouldn’t give away the rest of the lesson itself. “They’ll go to an area of the school where they’ll be cared for, and you can visit any time you like,” he replied with a slight smile. Exactly where that was would remain a mystery for now!
Did everybody else hear that? If not, he could always repeat it later.
OOC: We'll move on in 18-24 HOURS!

Summer had been listening to the Professor and just sitting quietly, she had been going through a thrase, were she didn't really want to answer questions and she had no idea why that was.
She though knew that she would have to at least attempt the spell, so she listened when the Professor said about what they were doing and looked at the board and made a mental note of the spell they were doing.
"LAP-i-foeres!" Summer wrote down, but then she scribbled it out, that didn't look right. "Lap-IDFoestre" She wrote the new thing down but again she scribbled it out, as she was sure that wasn't the spell either.
Summer looked at the board again and really concentrated. "LAP-i-fors!" Summer thought that looked better and she would guess maybe that would be right, now though she had to practice it. With a sigh she got herself ready.

Norman continued to monitor the students from his desk at the front of the room, pleased with what he saw. Most of the students had so far succeeded in transforming their top hats into rabbits, and the ones who hadn’t appeared to be on the right track… but they’d have to come back to that later. As he glanced at his watch, he saw that it was time to move on to the next section of the lesson.
“Find a stopping place, please,” he addressed the class, pausing for a few moments to allow time for the students to redirect their attention. “If you haven’t yet transfigured a rabbit, you’ll have more time to practice later. For now, here’s a question to consider. How do you think a transfigured animal might behave differently than a real one? Do you think that would make bonding with a transfigured animal easier or harder?”
OOC: Question 2 is up! You’ll have AT LEAST 24 HOURS for this one.

Aria actually had intended to practice further by transfiguring another bunny. But she decided that she’d rather wear the top hat selected; besides, soon enough the lesson would be moving on. There was some disappointment when Carton told her they could visit the bunnies. “Couldn’t I have mine instead? He’s such a darling little thing! I don’t want to part with him.” She gave the man her most pleading, soft brown eyed look that she could muster before heading off. He had some time to think about it.
The sight of Caes with his own hat atop his head made her giggle. “You look rather dashing!” It was true! Forgive her but Aria was astonishingly biased when it came to Caeson Dominic Hawkins. Her bunny was scooped up in her arms again. The little guy was balanced in one arm so that she could raise a hand to answer the next question. “I don’t think there’s much difference,’’ Aria began with uncertainty. “Mine certainly seems friendly and content.” Yes, he did!

A break from the spell practice was a relief. Maybe it shouldn't have been, considering practice was meant to help, and Lydia clearly needed all the help she could get with her spellwork. The top hat was currently sporting a single reddish-brown rabbit ear, and outside of that still very much looked like a regular top hat. But it was nice to take a break from failing over and over again.
Bonding with a transfigured animal? Hmm...
"I think it would be harder," she said, raising her hand. "And I mean, I guess its behavior would depend on how good your magic is when you transfigured it. But it'll still disappear - or I guess, revert back? Because magic wears off most of the time eventually, unless it's super strong, right? So it's not like a real real animal, so I think bonding would be more difficult." If that made any sense. It was weird looking at the ones that had successfully used the spell and thinking about how those rabbits were originally top hats. They were just as cute as a real rabbit though.

“Lapifors!”
It had taken a few more tries but it appeared his latest attempt had actually worked to the fullest, transfiguring one black top hat into a brown and white splotched bunny rabbit. Complete with one twitchy nose and a fluff tail with floppy ears in-between. Which happened to be just in time as the professor was moving them on with another question for them.
“Like maybe a transfigured bird wouldn’t be the best flier,” he remarked at his turn, keeping a watchful eye on his furry charge for the time being. They wouldn’t necessarily have the learned skills to fly that a real bird would have perfected since the mama bird pushed them out of the nest….right? More of the physical appearance and what the caster was manifesting.
Ash held the bunny in her arms, petting it the way her brother had showed her. It seemed pretty docile to her. "The transfigured rabbit doesn't have any life experience. So... I guess it won't be scared of me unless I give it a reason to be. Me being kind or cruel to it might be the basis to how it acts around people. It could even be the only time it interacts with people, if I didn't know where it was going." She zoned out for a second, then raised her hand and asked, "does my rabbit have a soul?" Or was it just like... a shell that simulated rabbit things? Did it matter? Ash was distracted again
After Professor Carton's instruction, Luther took the snow-white rabbit he transformed out of the hat, wore the hat and started petting the cute small ball of white fur. Seeing Aria and Caes wearing their hats, Luther whispered in their direction "Cool hats!"
Professor's question was in fact something Luther has never thought about. After thinking for a while, he raised his empty hand and said "They may not know how to behave. I mean, like my first failure, I imagined a rabbit but I didn't visualize its fur. If the caster doesn't think about the animal's behaviours, consciously or unconsciously, the animal may not have the right instinct or something to act that way."

Wait. Was this how magicians pulled rabbits out of hats?!? They were wizards? Actually, this probably made a whoooollleee lot of sense, now that Apollo thought about it. And it also made him wonder, would that be a viable career choice? Or did they do it just for fun?
"Lapifors", the sixteen year old said, practicing the incantation. Seemed easy enough. But time for another question now.
He glanced around his classmates as they seemed to think a transfigured animal would be harder to bond with, but maybe? "Wouldn't ... like a real animal... they have brains of their own. So you can't necessarily control what they're thinking, right? Like a transfigured animal is something of your own creation, so I feel like when you create something you ... have more control over its behaviors."

Norman knew that look, the look teenagers gave when they wanted something. He’d seen it a number of times over the years, both as a professor and a father, so he knew better than to be persuaded. “I understand, but the school has rules for pets that aren’t approved on the supply list,” he replied. Meaning anything that wasn’t a cat, rat, toad, owl, or pygmy puff. “If you get approval from Headmaster Kazmi, Professor Paton, and Professor Hernandez, I’m fine with you keeping it. Otherwise, it needs to stay in its designated area until the end of the term.”
Her answer to the next question earned an approving nod. “Interesting theory. Miss McLeod,” he said, smiling slightly as his eyes fell to the bunny balanced on her arm. “Yes, it certainly does!”

It seemed Clarke had the opposite thought, which was fine. There were no right or wrong answers to this question. “Good point, Miss Clarke,” he replied with a nod. “Most transfigured animals will keep their form until someone casts a spell to revert them back or until the original caster dies, but yes, the magic will eventually end.”

As he heard Atreyu-Rehman’s answer, Norman thought of a bird wobbling mid air as it struggled to fly in a straight line, and he smiled slightly. It was a rather amusing mental image! “That’s certainly possible, especially without guidance from its caster,” he replied. “Very good, Mr. Atreyu-Rehman!”

Now here was an answer that made Norman think! “Excellent point, Miss Fox!” he replied with an approving nod. “I’d think the same applies to all creatures before they gain life experiences, transfigured or not.” That reminded him of studies done on the effects of cruelty on creatures and people, as well as the whole nature vs nurture debate in general. It was enough to touch even his battle-hardened heart. Fortunately Fox’s question stopped him from going too far down that rabbit hole (no pun intended!). “Not in the traditional sense, no. They’re created from inanimate objects, which don’t have souls.”

Starriver’s answer went in a similar direction and likewise earned an approving nod from the professor. “Great observation, Mr. Starriver,” Norman said. “Transfigured animals’ only knowledge of the world comes from their caster, so that’s important to consider both when transfiguring the creature and interacting with it.”

Norman was wondering when someone would bring up transfigured animals’ susceptibility to control. When Adara-Stark finally mentioned it, he smiled slightly. “Exactly, Mr. Adara-Stark!” he replied. He didn’t think he could have worded that any better himself, so he saw no reason to add anything else.
When he saw no more hands in the air, Norman took it as his cue to move on. “Excellent theories,” he addressed the class. “In a few minutes, you’ll have the opportunity to test those, but as a general rule of thumb, transfigured animals are, as Mr. Adara-Stark mentioned, more susceptible to your control. They experience the world through their caster. The more you bond and interact with your animal, the more attuned to your bidding they’ll be.”
Everyone following so far? Just in case, he paused a minute to allow time for the information to sink in. “For the rest of class, you’ll be doing just that: bonding with your bunny,” he went on, removing two more boxes from behind his desk and placing them on top. “There are toys and treats in these boxes to help. You can also use this time to continue practicing Lapifors if you want.”
OOC: We’ve reached the mini activity. For this one, your character needs to interact with a transfigured bunny. You have full creative control over how the bunnies react to your student. If your character doesn’t yet have a bunny, you can have them partner with someone who does or keep practicing Lapifors until they transform one of their own. You’ll have ABOUT 48 HOURS for this activity!

Aria was so disappointed but she tried not to show it or let it distract her from the lesson. The only person she let these feelings be shown to is Caes, and she wondered if he’d help her in snagging one of the precious bunnies at the end of the lesson. They were ALWAYS such a great team when it came to that sort of thing. Aria continued petting the little creature in her arm the entire time that responses were being given though he gaze lingered on Apollo. Hmmm… if she tried to make her new furry companion tag along out of the classroom with her, that meant there was a strong possibility that he would? INTERESTING!
Still holding Mr. Whiskers {yes, this was what the girl had decided to name him}, she headed up to Carton’s desk. There, some toys and treats were taken. They were enough so that Caes and Serena could share with her if they needed extra. Seated once more, Aria gently placed Mr. Whiskers on the desk and picked up a tiny carrot attached to a thread and a small stick. The carrot was dangled at the back end of her desk - opposite to Mr. Whiskers. “Care to get the carrot? It’s mighty tasty! Er... sort of.''
Luther looked at the rabbit that was sniffing around with its little nose, then he lifted it and turned it so that he was looking at its small face. "You know, you are pretty cute." said Luther and then continued "Let's see if I can teach you a trick.". After that he took off the hat and placed the rabbit inside, it wouldn't do if little Snowflake escaped.
After getting some treats and a ring from the boxes Professor Carton just revealed, he returned to his desk. Feeding one treat to Snowflake, Luther said "Now, we will play a game. If you want more," showing another treat, "you have to come and get it." Then he held the ring a couple of centimetres above the desk and waved the treat on the other side to attract Snowflake's attention. However, the rabbit seemed very disinterested in the treat.
After a couple more tries and encouraging words, Snowflake finally jumped through the ring. Lifting the rabbit high, Luther said "Yes! Yes, you did it! Good girl!"
After many failures and two more successes, Luther let Snowflake eat the rest of the treats and continued practising Lapifors on two more hats. In the end, he had one brown and one black rabbit next to Snowflake on his desk.
Between his trials of casting Lapifors, he raised his hand and asked "Professor, is it possible to transform these rabbits back into top hats?"
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
The bunny seemed to scrutinise Aria as though trying to see into her soul about the carrot being delicious and she immediately felt guilty for sort of lying. “Alright, alright! You got me, you cutie! THESE are the actual treats.” She held out her hand to show Mr. Whiskers; the bunny’s little nose twitched as though he were having fun with the aroma. “You cross to the next side of the desk where the carrot is.” The carrot on the stick was shaken. “And I’ll give you a treat. Does that sound like a deal?” Mr. Whiskers continued to stare at her with beady eyes. “I’ll take that as a yes, then! Here, the carrot awaits.”
The Slytherin lightly jiggled the stick which made the carrot shake. Mr. Whiskers’ attention turned to it but he did not move. Cue more jiggling, this time closer to the little creature! Still no movement. “Aww, come on! Not even one hop?’’ Aria pouted.
It seems as though this was going to be quite the challenge for her.
Ash wondered a lot about the ethics of turning hats into soulless rabbits. Or rabbits into hats with souls. Or rabbits into hats and back into rabbits... she was getting distracted. She brought her mind back to the rabbit she was holding. She let it sniff at her, deciding to name it daisy because of the flowers growing a little out of her desk when she smiled(rarely). She talked to it very quietly, playing with it a little. Ash wasn't by any means an 'animal person', but she was really enjoying this activity. She even smiled some more, feeling relaxed and peaceful.

Norman watched from his desk at the font as the students bonded with their rabbits, and a small smile spread across his face, It was rather heartwarming to see, even for a tough old ex-Auror like him. As his bluish-green eyes scanned the room, he spotted not one, not two, but three rabbits now on Starriver’s desk. Wow, someone had been practicing!
He blinked at the question. He would’ve thought that would be obvious, as he’d mentioned changing transfigured animals back earlier as well as untransfigured a few of the students’ incomplete transfigurations. Maybe the boy had been distracted when he did that. “It certainly is,” he replied. “The untransfiguration spell is Reparifarge; its wand movement is a sort of horseshoe shape like this…” He demonstrated the wand movement. “If you choose to practice that spell now, please leave at least one of your rabbits intact. We’ll be using them for something else later in the term.”
Several minutes later, Norman glanced at his watch to find that time was running out. “That’s time!” he called, loud enough for the students to hear no matter where they were in the room, but not loud enough to frighten the bunnies. “Leave your rabbits here. They’ll be relocated to their new home in the transfiguration corridor, where you’ll be able to visit them any time you like. If you’d like to keep your rabbit in your dorm instead, you must have approval from the headmaster, Creatures professor, and your Head of House.” Rules were rules after all!
PIcking up one final box from behind the desk, he roamed the room and handed a bunny-sized collar to each student. “Please write your rabbit’s name on these collars and put them on the rabbits,” he instructed. “Your homework: visit your rabbits on at least two occasions, and take note of their behavior. Class dismissed!”
OOC: That’s a wrap! Thank you all for coming! I’ll leave the thread open another 24ish hours for anyone who wants to catch up and/or post their student leaving.

Aria was pleased to report that by the time the lesson was up, Mr. Whiskers had hopped slowly and cautiously {it seemed} towards the carrot. This resulted in Aria letting out an excited little squeal and Mr. Whiskers was promptly rewarded with a few treats. The pair continued this trend of bonding with the bunny becoming increasingly responsive to it all. But soon, it was time to wrap up. Aria accepted the collar. With the use of magic, Mr. Whiskers’ name was inscribed upon the collar. All the while she debated her course of action of owning him. If she snagged the bunny now, there was no way that she’d be able to complete the homework. The girl sighed dramatically. It looked as though she’d better start the process of seeking permission from Kazmi, Hernandez and Paton. UGH! What a lengthy process that would be.
But Mr. Whiskers was worth it.
“I’ll be seeing you shortly, little Sir! You’ll be taken care of until then. Here. Have a few more treats.” The last of the treats were left on the desk before Aria packed up her belongings. The creature got a few head pats before she stood, eyeing her brother. Was he ready to go?
Listening to the Professor's answer intently, Luther realized that he asked something rather obvious. His embarrassment caused a faint colour to rise up in his normally pale face and he quickly said "Oh, right, thank you, Professor." Then he started practising Reparifarge on the brown and black rabbits. He couldn't bring himself to test his spell on Snowflake.
When he heard Professor's closing remarks, Luther thought 'Time really flies when you are having fun, I guess.' On his desk, Snowflake was sleeping soundly in the top hat and the black rabbit was eating one of the remaining treats. However, he had managed to transfigure the brown one back into a top hat which he proudly wore. Taking the hat with a sleeping Snowflake inside to Professor Carton, Luther said "Have a nice day, sir." and then added in a quieter voice pointing to the top hat "Snowflake is sleeping."

When Professor Carton called him out on the transfigured animals being more susceptible to control, Apollo couldn't help but feel a sense of pride in knowing he'd been correct in his thinking. But more than that, he was pretty sure he felt a gaze on him .... and looking around, he just barely caught glimpse of Aria looking at him. Was she ... jealous? He looked back at her confused, before decidedly shrugging it off. He could talk with her later about it.
"Lapifors" he went back to not practicing this time, but actually casting the incantation to transfigure his top hat. With his cute rabbit in front of him, he stroked it gently. But not enough time to bond with it unfortunately. Time certainly did fly when fluffy creatures were involved, didn't it?

"Thanks for the fun lesson, Professor!"
