A cool January breeze swept through the practice pitch, the sun beamed down in a dull winter yellow. The temperatures were still quite cold, but that was to be expected in their region. Professor Escalante made sure to rid the practice pitch of any snow and ice so as to avoid any unnecessary injuries and accidents, and to provide a high quality learning environment for his students.
Standing at his post near the entrance of the gate to the practice pitch, in his usual dark robes, Kennedy Escalante waited for students to arrive. When they did, students would notice a rectangular wooden table topped with goggles, a sign for an adventurous lesson awaiting for them. Other than that there was nothing else unnatural.
As usual in Escalante’s lessons, students are expected to fly laps around the pitch in order to warm up until the lesson officially begins. Students will be well aware that this serves to activate their muscles in order to prepare for the activity up ahead, and to avoid injuries.
OOC: Hiiiii, all! I’m so excited to be here and to have this opportunity to play with you all. Remember to check out the Flying Rules and Expectations before posting in this thread.
As mentioned in the post, Kennedy would have instructed all students to fly around the practice pitch as a warm up before the lesson begins. See you all in about 24 hours from this post! ^___^

Another flying lesson!
Not even the cold could detour his prospect of an exciting lesson today. His clothing was armed with the Heating Charm and he had his broom in hand. That definitely meant he was ready to do his practice laps. “Hi, Professor!’’ The Hufflepuff observed the table with the goggles but made no comment. That was probably because he was too eager to get in the air. “See you on the flip side!” Grinning, he ventured further onto the pitch, tugging his Hufflepuff scarf a little tighter around his neck. Then he hopped onto his broom and easily took off.
Jude wasn’t big on Quidditch but flying? Certainly.
BRRRRRRR..... it was too cold for Maxine's taste, with all the magic at their disposable you'd think they would have been able to come up with a indoor flying arena for them to practice in. It was freezing!!!!
None the less, bundled up in extra layers, Maxine made her way to the pitch ready to fly, or at least try to fly, she was not very good at it. The one thing she has found she really lacked in. "Hello Professor" Maxine added with a smile.
She mounted her broom, ready for take off ... she tried to act more confident that she really was. She kicked off from the ground at least didn't fall off this time. Gripping the handle even tighter and sticking to just a few feet above the ground she started her laps.

It was a little chilly out as Caes wore his jumper with gloves to this Flying Lesson. He needed more time in the air for sure since he had plans with perfecting his flying skills. "Hello Professor," His smiles were usually brief but this time seemed to last a smidge longer. Perhaps he was happy to be here.
Without hesitation, he kicked off the ground with his broom to begin flying laps.

Jacoby came bounding down to the pitch. He loved flying and he honestly loved quidditch. The wind blowing in his face, the need for speed. It was all a lot and he was just glad to be out of the castle. He grabbed his broom smiled at the professor, "Hi Professor." Giving a slight wave he took off on some warmup laps. The solitude only slightly bothered him, but that's because it was the one time his twin was so different than him, he hated flying because the heights freaked him out. But Jacoby, he loved all of it and lived for it.

It wasn't the cold that bothered him. It was the flying. Yeah. Why was Ed in this class again? It was supposed to be an easy A (for Acceptable), wasn't it? He would rather take a class on Floo-ing or Apparating, but he was only a 5th year.
And so he was here. Earmuffs and gloves and scarf on. (School) broom in hand. Annnnd he was doing some leg stretches, high knees, skipping and the like, holding his broom aloft but not riding it yet. He was, most definitely, delaying that proper flying bit as longggggg as possible.

Used to spending time in the air, Rajesh didn’t exactly need any time in flying lessons. But really, it was a way to relax that because it was scheduled by a professor, meant it couldn’t be missed or rescheduled by anything else that might try to occupy his time. Which had worked for him last year amongst his OWL frenzy so it was continued. Bundled up against the sold, the sixth year made his way to the practice pitch, broom in hand ready to see what today’s lesson would bring.
“Good day, Professor,” he greeted Escalante with a nod as the man stood at the gated entrance to the pitch, the younger passing him onto the grounds. A few laps coming up, Raj stepping to one side and mounting his broom, pushing up off the ground with ease and heading into the sky with those already there. It was colder up here but the breezes couldn’t help but remind him of the cliffsides of home. One deep breath....two...

Flying certainly wasn’t her best subject, but at least it was one that kept Sable Ileana busy. And she didn’t particularly dislike the professor either. Mostly because, again, the subject kept the nearly-thirteen-year-old Gryffindor busy. It was active, and therefore it meant she wasn’t thinking so much about the pirate ship she was building with her crew, or the whole mimicking thing that had been happening ever since she’d encountered Peeves while exploring. Actually, the mimicking things was kind of fun. Sounding like other people was kind of useful in a sneaky way. Just, not so much in lessons.
Thankfully, it was her own voice that spilled out as the blonde sped onto the pitch and jumped on her broomstick to start the required laps. “Hi Professor!”, she called out as she zoomed past him to join the others.
Ooh, goggles.

She wasn’t the best flyer but she was here to learn. Lisa thought of Flying class as her opportunity to overcome her fear of heights. She was in full winter gear today: scarf, mittens, and hat to protect her poor ears!
So Lisa was ready to take on another flying class. “Hi Professor!” she greeted. “Cant wait for the adventure!”
The break had done wonders for Ash. She looked as if she was a million years younger and happier. There was much less of the constant gloomy atmosphere, less of the sad gray flowers that sprung up in her footsteps. And flying certainly didn't hurt. Ash always had a fear of falling to her death, but she was confident on her broomstick and flying seemed to take her worries away for a short time. "Hey, Professor Escalante," she said, actually fully smiling. She did a few warm ups, adjusted her gear, and took off on her broomstick to catch up with her friends.
Luther walked briskly towards the practice pitch. Enchanted woolly gloves, a scarf and a hat barely warmed him enough in cold Highlands January. The snow-covered grounds reminded him of his backyard and the totally unfair snowball battles between him and Leo. As a cold breeze sobered him, Luther realized he had almost arrived at the practice pitch.
Luther has always loved flying. To be precise, he liked the freedom he felt in the air. However, due to Leo's over-protective (in Luther's opinion) attitude, he never had the chance to try flying high or at high speeds. That's why he loved the Flying class, he had more freedom here.
Seeing Professor Escalante, he said smiling "Hello, Professor. How are you?" and then after noticing the goggles on the table, he thought 'Is it going to rain or snow? I hope not.'.
After ensuring he was ready to fly, Luther took a broom and started flying at a height that would make Leo disapprove but not scold him. Seeing Jude doing his laps around the pitch, he said "Hey Jude! Nice day to fly, isn't it?" Then started accelerating gradually and enjoying the feeling of the cold winter air on his face.

Was he good at flying? Was he horrendous? It was far too early to tell for sure, but Solomon enjoyed it so much so naturally saw himself as the next Slytherin seeker. With a spring in his step, Solomon entered the practise pitch with his broom that was collected just now from the broom shed, and got himself into a mounting position ready for the warm up laps.
He still felt shy greeting the professors on his arrival, so he readied himself to take off which was a little wobbly at first.

Maria walked down to the pitch dressed from head to toe to withstand the january winter chill. She had pink earmuffs, her winter coat and scarf, mittens and of course warm shoes on. It wouldn't do to freeze. Entering the pitch Maria with her own broom in hand, since she was a second year now, shot their Flying Professor a sunny smile. "Hello Professor Escalante!" Maria then proceeded to kick off from the ground to do the warm up laps on her broom, before the actual flying lesson started. It was nice to do something active, rather than just standing around, and getting cold.

Was anyone surprised to see Apollo there? They shouldn't have been. While there was unfortunately no owl or newt requirement for flying, any opportunity for the Gryffindor to be on the broom was one he would gladly take in lieu of other subjects.
He definitely did not need to be told twice - or even once - to make his laps, as he barely spoke a greeting to the professor before kicking off into the brisk winter air. At least it wasn't snowing at the moment. Or raining.

One of the most THRILLING classes there was this one. Which was why Vera had gotten there as eaaaarly as she could so she could do the practice laps. Racing her way from the castle to the broomshed to the pitch, she zoomed around peers and plants and all obstacles, darting straight for the table as she got there. "Hi Professor Escalante!" She chirped, taking off for the skies.
"WEEEEEEE." She hooped out as she started her first rotation around the pitch. Before another. And another. And as many as she could possibly get in before it was boring THEORY time.

“Good morning, Mister Anders,” Kennedy greeted back with a smile. The young Hufflepuff had a knack of setting arrivals off with a great mood. As Anders made his way to warm up, Kennedy gave him a salute of acknowledgment for his eagerness.

Kennedy could tell Miss Bixby was having a struggle with the cold. He really did feel for her, but that’s why there were charms for that. He’d consult with her another time and check in to see if she needed assistance with it. It comes in handy on days like these.
“Good morning, Miss Bixby.” He returned the greeting with a kind smile, then added, “Do be careful with the extra layers while you warm up.” Of course, the practice pitch was charmed in order to soften any falls and prevent serious injuries.

“Good morning, Mister Caes.” The young man was in good spirits, it seemed. For what reason? The list was extensive when one was a teenager. A good mood will be useful in this lesson.

A flying enthusiast. This twin, Mister Jacoby Rivers, showed much promise in the skies, Kennedy has noticed that much throughout the term. . “Good day, Mister Rivers.”

Kennedy would have smirked if he knew students regarded flying as an easy grade. Perhaps, but not on his watch. He was here to not only teach them, but to challenge them as well.
“Good morning, Mister Cambridge.” And there were those students who chose to warm up on the ground. That was alright. The purpose of the time allotted for warming up was to get them moving their muscles before the lesson began.

“Good morning, Mister Atreyu-Rehman.” Another skilled broom rider. Kennedy nodded at him as he entered the pitch. During Christmas, Kennedy had mentioned to Beverly that he was sure he had her Hogwarts best friend’s child in his class now. She almost lost it in excitement (as excited a Wayne can get) and said she was going to send Adytia an owl.

Another student all bundled up. Kennedy was really starting to wonder about the heating charm. It was alright, though. He would not leave his students out to freeze. That was a given. He also recognized the young Ravenclaw’s valiant effort in this class. Flying wasn’t always easy. Something they were going to touch on today.
“Good morning, Miss Nam,” he smiled. As for the adventure today, it was going to be one for the books.

“Good morning, Miss Dolph,” Kennedy greeted kindly. The layers some of the students were wearing concerned him. It was a good thing the pitch was charmed. Not that he worried the students would be careless, but sometimes flying required less layers for mobility purposes; like today.

Young Miss Vera. Kennedy could not help being reminded of his daughter. The high energy. The enthusiasm. Hopefully they wouldn’t clash during warm-up. “Hello, Miss Thanatos.” Do be careful!
Checking the watch on his wrist, Kennedy blew his whistle. “Alright, everyone gather up,” he called, loud and clear for everyone in the pitch to hear him. He eyed the students for a moment. Okay. They all looked normal. As normal as they’ve been before Peeves started with his gifts. This was a great start for today’s lesson.
As the students gathered to their usual lesson spot on the practice pitch, Kennedy summoned cushions for them to sit on. They were, of course, charmed with the Heating charm.
“Good morning, class! I hope you’re all prepared for another day. Remember, if there’s anything off or you’re not feeling well, please let me know at once.” He fixed them all with a firm look. Kennedy didn’t joke when it came to safety, especially given the recent turn of events.
With that out of the way, he began, “Thus far we’ve covered several flying subjects and techniques. Such as broom care, safety guidelines, weaving and diving, to dive-up and pull-up. Today we will focus on something different. Something that affects us when we’re flying a broom, and we might not even think about it,” he said. “Before we dive in too deeply on that matter, in your own words, what makes someone a vulnerable flier, and how could they risk the safety of others and themselves?”

Soon enough, his classmates were joining him bit by bit. He heard a voice calling to him and he slowed a bit to look over to see Luther. Jude grinned. “Hey, Luther! Yeah, it is!” This Hufflepuff was enjoying the moment fully, and it just might be one of his favourite things ever - to be up in the air before the majority of the students got there. He matched the pace of Luther and his broomstick so that they flew side by side.
Until it was time for the lesson to start, of course.
Trusting that Luther had heard Escalante’s instructions, he landed then dismounted but waited for a bit to ensure the Gryffindor was on his feet safely. It was in Jude’s nature to look out for his friends. After doing so, he sank onto a cushion somewhere at the back, his broomstick beside him. Yes, he was all set for the lesson, and was as fit as a fiddle!
The sixth year’s left hand went up almost immediately after the question was asked. “Like you mentioned earlier, professor - if they’re not feeling well. Imagine a flier vomiting mid-air and getting that sick all over themselves and the others around them. That’s a potential risk for crashes.”
Luther was enjoying the cold wind on his face when he heard the Professor's whistle. Sighing he carefully landed on the ground and sat on a cushion near Jude. When he realized the cushion was charmed to be warm, he said "Thank you for the cushions, Professor."
After Professor Escalante asked his question, he remembered an accident he heard about back home. so he raised his hand and said "Professor, eating too much might slow the flier's senses and reflex time as the blood rushes to your stomach" and then added in a slightly unsure voice "I guess" but continued regardless "So they might lose control of the broom and hit somewhere or, worse, someone. In short, one shouldn't eat right before flying."

Desiree didn’t particularly want to come to class today. Come to think of it, she didn’t want to come back to Hogwarts after the holidays at all! She could’ve easily convinced her father to let her stay home, where nobody would see her wombat transformations, and homeschool her like he did for Adam. And she would’ve done it too, if her brother hadn’t talked her out of it.
She doubted she’d learn anything useful in Flying class today - and by “useful”, she meant anything that could stop her transformations or better yet, make Peeves pay for turning her into an ugly animal - but she was here, albeit looking less princessy than usual. “Comfortable clothes” to her usually meant something pink and glittery, but today she wore jeans and an oversized black hoodie that looked like it could swallow her up. The only thing remotely princessy about her outfit was her sneakers, which she’d charmed to be blue and gold with little red roses… a homage to another Beast like her.
She’d greeted Professor Escalante with a slight smile upon her arrival. Despite her mood, she’d make an effort to be kind; it wasn’t his fault that she turned into a hideous beast! School broom in tow, she completed the warm-up laps, taking care to stay far away from the other students lest she transform mid-flight. Thankfully that didn’t happen, and she carefully landed, joining the others on the cushions as the lesson began.
The professor needn’t worry about any flying teddy rats today - or ever! So far she hadn’t felt the foreboding tingle that preceded every transformation. If she did, she’d tell him. For now she was okay. While she felt a bit… ehh emotionally, physically she was fine.
You mean besides randomly turning into a hideous creature and losing one’s humanity? Desiree thought as soon as she heard the question, but she thought that answer was a bit too on the nose. Instead she took her answer in a different direction. When she heard the word “vulnerable”, she usually thought of emotional vulnerability. With that in mind, she raised her hand and said, “Could someone’s emotional state make them a vulnerable flier? Like, if someone’s sad or even really excited about something, they may be too distracted by their emotions to pay attention to their surroundings.”

Maria heard the whistle and with a small sigh she dismounted on the ground with the rest of her classmates on a heated cushion. She made sure her broom was nearby. It had been a gift from her dads when her papa had finally come home from Atlantis. Maria focused her attention on Professor Escalante glad that her 'power' of turning invisible wasn't as frightening at the moment. She had gone a few days without turning any part of herself invisble and that was a relief. She just shook her head in response to question of well-being. Maria was fine. To the question she mulled over her answer before raising her hand to speak. "Poor balance and clumsiness as well as poor awareness of your surroundings could make someone a vulnerable flier, and can risk their own and other safety if they for example fly into someone if they aren't looking or if they fly themselves into a tree." Yes that could happen and could lead to multiple injuries.

As Caes was in the air doing his laps, he thought back to his earlier years of unsupervised flights over the trees of his former school. Wanting to fly out of the island and towards the next mass of land. He felt free when in the air, even with the noted limits. He could find some form of freedom within the limits.
Caes was really in his element by the time his laps were cut short from the whistle. He then flew back down with the others before hearing the question, what could make a flyer vulnerable? ".. Maybe, an overconfident flyer? Sometimes someone who overestimates their abilities can harm themselves or others when trying new flight skills without enough practice." It was totally not speaking out of experience. Nope.
Maxine landed with a bigger thud then intended when the lesson had officially begun. Whoops... wobbling a little to regain her legs. She made her way over and contemplated the question ... what makes someone a vulnerable flier, and how could they risk the safety of others and themselves?
"I think confidence is key, if you're scared of flying then you are more vulnerable" She added - she normally was confident in everything ... expect flying so she was speaking directly from experience here. "So you'd risk flying into others, or falling off your broom, or being unable to stop." ... not that she'd ever do any of those things ..........

Jacoby circled back around the pitch and gathered around with his fellow classmates. It would be interesting to see what today's lesson was. Vulnerable when flying? He tried not to glance at his brother cause he was a huge liability when flying. It's why their parents had given them a double broom as kids cause Zeek would not have ridden a single one.
Raising his hand he got ready to answer, "Being distracted, which leads to not paying attention, which could get you hurt, lost, or I guess even make you crash" Then he heard someone say throwing up while flying and that nearly made him gag. Of all the weird gross things that he was okay with vomit was not one of them. He shuddered thinking about being the person behind that and cringed.
Vera did NOT want to go back to the ground when the sharp sound of the whistle pierced the air. But the idea of not being able to fly longer because of like... detention or getting literally 'grounded' or something by the Professor had her following her peers to the ground with a sigh. Stepping off her broom when her feet touched ground, she moved over to plop down onto one of the cushions next to Maria. "oooh! Warm!"
Hmm... the dangers of flying?
Well there were clearly a LOT but that's part of what made it so FUN. Except for one, which she raised her hand to chime in on. "Your feelings are vulnerable when you're in the air. Like... one person could be SUCH a natural born flier while you have to struggle and it could hurt your feelings and make your tummy feel all churny." Totally not thinking of herself, no, nope. She was clearly a tiny flying prodigy. "And it could be dangerous to other people because when your tummy feels weird sometimes you say MEAN things."
“That’s an excellent point. We must listen to our body. If we feel something is off it is better we assess it while we’re still on the ground.” And avoid vomiting on others. Kennedy has been vomited on by his children and it was something he wouldn’t want his students to experience while they were flying!

In short, one shouldn't eat right before flying."
What a polite young man. Kennedy gave him a nod in welcome.
Listening to Luther’s response, Kennedy nodded in understanding. “Eating too much could produce negative results such as digestive problems,” he replied. It’d be mighty uncomfortable. Something he would advise against. “To extend on your answer, Mister Starriver, eating a small portion or a snack before activity could be beneficial, as that would provide fuel for the body.” Kennedy was glad this was brought up.

Kennedy, being the excellent observer that he was, noticed Desiree wasn’t her usual self. The large dark hoodie being the first indicator. He’s noticed recent events were affecting the students. Some more than others. He made a mental note to check in on them after the lesson.
“Excellent, Miss Marchand,” Kennedy responded.”Even though we can’t physically see it, the emotional state of a person could contribute immensely to making them most vulnerable up in the skies.”

“Correct, Miss Dolph. Great examples; clumsiness and poor awareness could lead to a lot of trouble when flying, and accidents.” Flying into a tree was one thing. Flying into a specific tree at Hogwarts was an entirely different catastrophe Kennedy would NOT like to see.

Nope.
Ah, overconfidence. Kennedy nodded in agreement. “I’m glad you brought that up, Mister Hawkins. Flying may seem easy to some. Maybe they’re born with talent, but it goes beyond that. When you’re in the skies not only are you responsible for your own safety, but that of others around you. All actions cause effect.” And overconfidence is one of the main reasons for accidents in youth.

Kennedy noted Maxine’s landing and mentally thanked Merlin for the charmed flooring on the pitch. He should probably hold extra practice time for landing mechanics. Making sure she was okay, Kennedy continued.
Her answer was the opposite of what Caes had just commented, and interestingly enough, they went hand in hand. Too much confidence, lack of confidence, and confidence. “Right you are, Miss Bixby. In order to hone a skill and succeed one must feel sure of themselves. If you’re always second doubting it could lead to uncertainty, which can rest heavy on the mind.”

Raising his hand he got ready to answer, "Being distracted, which leads to not paying attention, which could get you hurt, lost, or I guess even make you crash" Then he heard someone say throwing up while flying and that nearly made him gag. “Well said, Mister Rivers. Distraction is a large component when it comes to flying accidents,” Kennedy replied. “If your goal is to fly straight, but you’re distracted by something behind you, you’re exposing yourself.” Good, good!

Feelings. Vera’s comment sounded a bit personal. “Feelings can be pesky little things when they are negative,” Kennedy agreed. “Which could lead to a clouded mind when flying. Excellent, Miss Thanatos.”
His students were on a roll!
Producing a white board at the front, all of the points the students mentioned appeared written in list form. “You all made great points on what makes a person vulnerable when flying a broom. Not only are you already exposing yourself simply by being meters off the ground, but there are all these things that make you vulnerable.” He gestured at the board. “Not only is it important to listen to your body, but your mind as well. It’s an interconnected network, and its purpose is to communicate with you. Your job is to listen to it, assess and go from there.”
Flying wasn’t just mounting a broom and up-up you go. It had so many components the younger population sometimes didn’t seem to consider, and if they did, it was easy for them to push aside. Kennedy didn’t blame them, he understood what that was like. “In today’s lesson we will focus on the mental aspect of flying. When we’re up in the air our mind is our main tool. It is the main contributor on whether you’ll have a successful and safe experience or the opposite.” Were they following? It was important they retain this information for the activity up ahead. “When the mind is under stress everyone reacts differently. It may lead to forgetfulness, lack of attention, poor judgment and-or awareness, or delayed reaction. All of which place the flier and anyone around them at risk.” Which is why Kennedy always pressed about safety. “In order to combat this is by centering our minds. By bringing our attention to the task at hand and being in the present. To some it might sound easy, some not.” Based on their answers to his first question the students either had some knowledge or experience of this.
Time to challenge their minds a bit. “Imagine you are mid-air on your broom and you come across a stressful situation, what are some strategies you could utilize to help center your mind and redirect your focus?”
OOC: You are all so amaziiiing! I enjoyed all of your answers. Again, your character may be as creative with their answers as long as they follow SS rules. See you all tomorrow around this time(GMT -7) <3
