It was a chilly Friday afternoon in mid February, the sun peeking through the clouds to give off just the right amount of cheerfulness to the day. As the students would get closer to where the lesson was being held out near the pasture, they would surely notice the warmth in the air. The entire area having been charmed to remain nice and warm for maximum comfort.
Professor Paton is leaning against one of two long covered tables with a warm smile on her face ready to greet everyone as they arrive. Both tables have long dark cloths covering whatever was hidden underneath each of them. The usual white board that stood off to the left held no clues to the days lesson at all, only simple instructions to not peek underneath the cloths on the tables and to please take a seat. Today's seats are padded hay bales set out in rows of semi circles.
OOC: Hi everyone! I'm so excited to be having my first lesson! Please remember that this isn't the students first lesson with Professor Paton IC and they would know all of her Rules and Expectations already. If you haven't already read them already please do. The lesson will be gin in 24-36 hours

His charge had taken his presence with ease, the tongue of the songsnake whipping out in investigation and tickling Rajesh. “That tickles,” he mused with a chuckle. However, his face well when he noticed there was water starting to collect in the bottom of the tank. He had forgotten to consider it a potential container and thus worked against him with his gift. “Want to come out and play…?” the Ravenclaw tried to coax the creature up onto his hand as he lowered it further for ease of access. The last thing he wanted to do was risk harming it by drowning. “Explore outside the tank?”
Thankfully it seemed to be obeying his suggestion as if he understood him without speaking Parseltongue. Raj let the songsnake slither along his skin, its tail coiling around his wrist. That was better. At least now he just had to deal with the wet skin that had developed. Taking a chance, he used a finger of his free hand to lightly brush against the creature’s head gaining a soft trill of a song in response to his actions. “You like that?”

Jude peered over at Bella for a bit to see how she was faring. It was kind of no surprise to him that she had chosen a snake. Deciding that his friend was dealing well with the snake, he turned back to his yellow chameleon. If he remembered correctly, yellow represents happiness and positivity. Yes, it made sense that this chameleon reflect that colour.
Though…
The question remained about whether he should take the chameleon out of the tank. That’s when the creature started glowing orange. “What…? Does orange represent uncertainty or something?” Jude asked it. Benjee - because that’s the name that decided to stick in the Hufflepuff’s brain - simply stared at him. “Don’t look at me like that, friend. That’s the look of a creature that wants to escape his tank.” He squinted, deliberating for another minute.
In the end, Jude pulled on the gloves, removed the cover from the tank slowly before VERY cautiously sticking his left hand in.

SPOILER!!: Major catch-up
The sleepy teddy rat yawned and stretched, looking up as the professor started speaking. Wombat!Desiree’s beady little eyes blinked at the drawings on the board. Frog… not dangerous to wombats. Tortoise, salamander… not dangerous. Iguana… not dangerous. Snake… could go either way but usually not. So far, so good. Were the creatures on the board what they’d be facing in the lesson? If so, she had nothing to worry about!
If Desiree had been in her regular form, she would’ve raised her hand and said that the snake, tortoise, and iguana were reptiles. Maybe she would’ve offered her own example too, like a chameleon or an alligator. Unfortunately, wombats couldn’t talk, so all she could do was sit quietly while the others answered. Some of which made her wombat ears perk up. Dragons? Basilisks?! The creatures on the creatures on the board weren’t dangerous to wombats, but those two definitely were! Surely Professor Paton wouldn’t make them face either of those, right?
Sometime after the second question was asked, Desiree changed back into herself. Her face flushed red with embarrassment, and she kept her eyes on the ground so she wouldn’t see the stares that would undoubtedly come her way. The first question she didn’t answer because she couldn’t; this time, she kept quiet so as not to draw any more attention to herself.
Although she didn’t say anything, she was still thinking about the question. She hadn’t had much experience with reptiles. There was a reptile house in the zoo her dad took her to when she was little, and she’d seen some in the Magical Menagerie before. But that was about all. She tried to recall some facts about reptiles. The only think she could think of was that they were cold-blooded, so they needed warm environments to help them regulate their body temperature.
Desiree listened intently to Professor Paton’s instructions. She had to admit, taking care of a reptile sounded kind of fun… as long as she didn’t turn into a wombat again and frighten the poor thing! She hung back, waiting for everyone else to choose their reptile before she made her move. Hopefully everyone would be too distracted by their animals to notice the freaky wombat girl!
She put her gloves on and made her way to the front, her blue eyes scanning the tanks. Which reptile did she want? Definitely not a karma chameleon! They were cool and all, but since they reflected their handler’s emotional state, all she’d do was make it moody. She wouldn’t wish her humiliation and self-loathing on the poor creature or anyone else- well, anyone except Peeves because he deserved every horrible thing that could happen to him for making her ugly!
If she’d had this lesson before the whole wombat transformation thing happened, Desiree would’ve been drawn to the luminescent lizard because pretty, or the golden gecko because asdfjkl!!! The gold color looks like Belle’s dress! But pretty princessy Desiree was gone. This Desiree was drawn instead to a moke. How cool was it that they could shrink at will? She wished she could do that! She’d love nothing more than to shrink out of sight after that embarrassing transformation!
“Hello, Mr. Moke,” she whispered, slowly bending to look into the tank. “Oops! Miss Moke,” she corrected herself after reading the information on the sticker. “I’m Desiree. Want to come with me? We’ll be great friends!”
She gave the moke a few moments to get used to her presence before picking up the tank and gently carrying it back to her seat. She set it on the ground, rather than on the hay bale beside her so she wouldn’t knock it over if she turned into a wombat again. “Will you let me pet you?” She gingerly stuck her hand inside the tank, taking care not to make any sudden movements that might startle the moke. She kept still, watching the little creature until she approached her. Only then did she reach out a finger to stroke the top of the moke’s head. “Oh, you like that, do you?”
As she kept petting the moke, the thought crossed her mind to try taking her out of the tank, but she decided against it. What if she turned into a wombat again while holding the moke? It might get lost - or worse! Better not risk it, she thought, and for now contented herself with just petting the creature.

Why was Jude suddenly nervous? He half expected little Benjee to sprint up his arm and he resisted a shudder. He chided himself to get his thoughts together; after all, he had dealt with snakes, of all things, before. He really had no idea what he was doing and at the last minute decided that he would just stroke the chameleon’s head. “Nice little fella,’’ Jude whispered, still worried about startling it. But so far, he was in luck. Things seemed to be going well.
He watched as Benjee change colour: from orange to purple to red to green. It really was fascinating to the Hufflepuff and he loved every second! The fact that these were all bright colours made him even more happy. “You’re such a great lil guy! Those colours are quite something!’’ Now for a big question. “Do you er… wanna come out to play here on the ground? Being stuck in a tank cannot be fun.”

Professor Paton watched as one by one each student came up and chose a tank containing a reptile before returning to their seats. Each student had their own approach, some knowing instantly which reptile they wanted from the moment they laid their eyes upon it. While others took their time and were much more careful in their selection.
She walked around silently for a few minutes giving them all time to get acquainted with the reptile they had selected. Everyone seemed to be doing well so far.

Was that the sweet thrill of a small songsnake that she heard? It indeed was. Hady smiled as she watched the way Rajesh took his time in coaxing the snake from the tank and how content and at ease the two seemed. "Things seem to be going well over here. I think you have one very relaxed young snake right there. Keep up the great work."

It's alright. She wasn't at all disappointed that Jude had chosen a chameleon over a snake. Hady knew that he wasn't to fond of the slithering type of reptiles. She was a lover of all reptiles. Of all creatures. And it made her proud to witness what she was seeing right now. No words were said as she didn't want to startle Jude or his reptile friend but she gave him a smile of encouragement. She had all the faith in him.

Taking a couple of deep, DEEP breaths, Ve reached as sloooooooowly as she could amongst them, waiting for one to crawl onto her hand and pulling him out to look at him. "Well, HI there. Aren't you just one of the cutest little things!?"
Oh? Well now, this was different. Hady was sure that Vera was going to go straight for a snake but the young girl surprised her by choosing a chameleon instead. "They are super cute, aren't they?" A great choice for someone that was so cheerful.

Only then slowly slipping her hand inside to let the tiny lizard decide if she liked her. Hopefully, because having a firedrake mascot would be awfully fun. Especially when she couldn’t have her crup at school with her.
Well, well, now this was interesting. Or perhaps not. Many of her students seemed to be surprising her this afternoon. Hady smiled watching Sable with her little firedrake. Another pair that was take it slow and getting used to to one another.

Hady noticed that Bella looked a little hesitant about choosing a reptile. Giving her a warm smile she remained close by should she be needed for anything at all. It was okay to not be a fan of reptiles, not everyone was.

He spoke to the creature, just as sparks came from its tail in an angry fashion. "Oh... uh.. right... you don't know me." He chewed his lip thoughtfully, as he went to get some food and hold it out for it to take. Food was always the way to win someone over, creatures included.
Continuing to walk around, Hady smiled in approval at Apollo's tatic of making friends with his firedrake. "Good idea. That usually is helpful in calming a creature."

Well would you look at that! Desiree was back in her rightful human form which for her a warm smile from Hady as she watched the young girl select a moke for herself. "That's a friendly little one right there, don't be afraid to hold him if you like. I should have mentioned this earlier but the area here is very safe." She should bring that to everyone's attention right now.
"I forgot to mention that for those of you that are holding and getting to know your new friends, you don't need to worry. I have placed up safety charms around the area earlier just in case. Our little reptile friends won't get very far if they manage to get away from you." No more than where they were all seated and the tables were set up. Everyone could rest easy now.
With a little more time left before they needed to move on to the next portion of the lesson, Professor Paton resumed walking around and keeping an eye on things. She was never far in case she might be needed for anything.
"Alright, may I have everyone's attention please," she gently clapped her hands. "If you are currently holding the reptile you chose you may continue to do so for now as long as you are listening to me. We are going to be moving on now. As you all have experienced already, how to greet and handle a reptile but their homes are also extremely important." She paused for a minute to see if she had their attention. "Just like where we live is important to us, it's important to them. Their homes give them a safe place to stay, grow and be healthy. So what I would like for you all to do is set up your new little friends tank for them. If you think it should be larger, make it so. And everything else that you might need for the perfect terrarium for each reptile is all over here." With a wave of her wand a disillusionment charm was lifted from all that was beneath the tables.
There was heating lamps, heating pads (magical so no plugs), dirt, hammocks, plants, things to climb on/hide in. Water bowls, food bowls, all different foods and treats, rocks. And many other items to many each reptile the perfect place to live.
"The card on each tank that lists has your reptiles information can be turned over to tell you about their habits. If you still would like some help, don't hesitate to ask me or a fellow classmate. You can work alone or in pairs if you're more comfortable doing things that way." She really wanted them all to have fun, be creative and get to know their reptile. Hopefully by the end of the lesson those that were nervous wouldn't be so skiddish anymore.
I love all the replies! You all are amazing! We are moving on to the main activity! Hady wants everyone to create a terrarium for their reptile! Everything they need/could want is there for them already and they can work alone or in pairs! We will be moving on in a about 72 hours! XD

Okay, so he needn’t worry about Benjee getting away from him thanks to the Charms Hady had put in place. Speaking on Benjee… the little chameleon had actually taken nicely to being handled. This relieved Jude immensely. Benjee was still flashing colours but the Hufflepuff noticed that yellow stuck for longer periods than the others. Still holding his new friend, he gave Hady his attention. Was it time to move along with the lesson already? Oh! They were going to build a new home for the creatures! Exciting! Jude was itching to get started the moment he saw the items that would be used in this process.
For the activity, Jude decided that he wanted to work alone. “I’ll just leave you on the ground for a bit. You can explore if you want.’’ Moving slowly again, Benjee was set to the ground. Immediately, the chameleon - now bright blue - took two steps, meticulously turning its head this way and that as though trying to decide which direction to go in first.
Jude then turned his attention to Benjee’s tank. If he were a Karma Chameleon, he definitely would want all the space he could get to move about. That was why the Hufflepuff decided to expand the tanks. With a mutter of an incantation and the appropriate wand movement, he watched as Benjee’s tank expanded. Jude’s intention was to make it enlarge in width, rather than height and this was exactly what was his focus. The result? Well, let’s just say that Benjee would have a marvelous time in his new home.
Summer had been listening quietly to what the Professor was saying, she like animals but did they really have to come out of their tanks, surely they were better in there and they could just watch and see what they did.
Summer looked around and saw that Desiree, seemed to be enjoying herself. She decided to see if any of her fellow gryffindors were enjoying their time as well, because she wasn't... her mother might like plants and animals but she liked them in their tanks. They were icky and dirty. She looked back at the tank.

“Spacious,” Jude muttered to himself as he stacked some rocks at strategic places in the tank. This, of course, was done after he had scattered a healthy layer of dirt about. Next, small bits of branches were added because chameleons like to climb, right? One particularly length branch was strung along the top of the tank from one end to the other so that Benjee could chill out there if he wanted.
The Hufflepuff was quite pleased with himself and he had actually begun humming softly as the work continued. Two heating lamps, one on each side of the tank, were set in place; these were for when the temperature was cooler obviously.
Then, just for the fun of it {since he didn’t think that chameleons usually ate out of bowls}, Jude added in one of the tiny food bowls. But not before adding some dead crickets and grasshoppers. Naturally it made sense to add a water bowl as well so this was done.
Now! Where was Benjee so that the chameleon could check out his new home?

Desiree was glad to know that there were safety charms in place. Now she could let the cute little moke out of her tank without having to worry about her getting hurt if another teddy rat transformation happened. It couldn’t be much fun staying cooped up in that tank all the time! As she stuck her hand inside, the moke crawled up her arm, and she giggled as she perched on her shoulder. “There, that’s better, isn’t it…” Her voice trailed off as she realized she didn’t know Miss Moke’s real name. “Minnie...” she read the sticker. Minnie Moke… that sort of sounds like Minnie Mouse, she thought with another giggle to herself at what a fitting name that was. This Minnie was just as friendly as the Disney character!
Giving Minnie a little pat on the head, she turned her attention to Professor Paton. Ooh, they were going to create a habitat for the reptiles? That sounded fun… provided she stayed in her human form long enough to do the activity! Her mind was already buzzing with ideas for Minnie’s terrarium. She’d need food and water, of course, some rocks to sit on, a hammock to sleep in style, some plants to hide behind in case she wanted to be alone, and a heat lamp to keep her warm. Was the lamp enough, or would she need a heating pad too? She’d figure that out later.
First things first, that tank was waaaay too small to hold all of Desiree’s ideas! She fixed that with a quick charm. “There, now you’ll have lots of room,” she said, petting the little moke still perched on her shoulder. “Let’s get you some supplies. Want to come?” She stuck her arm in the tank, just in case Minnie wanted to crawl down, but she seemed content where she was. Looked like she was coming with Desiree to the front!
She returned to her seat a few minutes later with an armload of reptile supplies and set everything on the ground in front of her, taking care not to jostle Minnie from her perch. Now to get to work! She carefully packed some dirt on the bottom of the tank to make a nice soft surface. Then she placed a heat lamp in one corner of the tank, added a heating pad just in case, and stacked some rocks in front to make a space for Minnie to sit in the “sun”. In another corner, she arranged some tall, leafy plants for a nice, secluded place for Minnie to hide. Who knows, she might like to eat the leaves too. She’d read that some lizards ate leaves. Were mokes among them?
Speaking of food, that was the next thing on Desiree’s to-do list. She filled up a food dish with crickets and placed it in another area of the tank. A quick Aquamenti filled the water dish, and she put that in the tank beside the food dish. Now Minnie had an area for warmth, an area for hiding, and an area for food. Now she needed an area to sleep and an area to play, of course! Desiree attached a hammock to one side of the tank and scattered some rocks and sticks throughout for MInnie to climb or sit on. When she was done, she looked at the little moke on her shoulder and said, “What do you think?”
She lowered her arm for Minnie to climb down, watching with a smile as the moke immediately perched on the rocks by her new heat lamp.. Desiree would take that as a sign of approval!

Were they having fun yet? Hady sure hoped that they all were. The task she had given them all of designing and setting up terrariums for the reptile they choose should be fun, right? It didn't even require them to touch the reptiles if they truly didn't want to. With a quick look at her watch she realized they were running out of time until the end of the lesson. "There's about ten minutes left everyone. So if you're still working on your terrarium please finish that up and get your reptile back into their tank if you have taken them out. I'd like for you to write your name and your reptiles name, if you've given them one, on the card that's on their tank so that I know who belongs to who. All of the reptiles here today will be taking up permanent residence in The Reptile Room if anyone would like to continue visiting them or any of the other reptiles there."

With only a little while left to the lesson, she once more walked around to see how everyone was doing. Why was she not surprised at the bonding happening here and how Jude knew just how to set up the tank for his reptile? Hady smile. "Great work. I'm sure your little reptile friend is going to have a great time in there." All those branches to climb on and rocks to lay on. Fun!

Hmm, was everything okay over here? "You can work with a friend if you're not comfortable with taking the reptile out at all. There's also gloves if you would like to wear those as well. Hady smiled warmly, she had so much faith in all of her students.

This was what she liked to see. Another student really getting into the lesson and enjoying their self. Hady watched for a few moments in silence as Desiree figured things out all on her own for the reptile habitat. "I think she likes it," she gave an approving nod of her head as the moke settled on a rock. "Very nice work."
A bit more walking around and it was time to call the lesson to a close. Making her way back to the front where she was stood earlier by the white board, Professor Paton gave a clap of her hands. "That's today's lesson everyone! I hope you all enjoyed it and don't forget to write your name and your reptiles name on the card that's on their terrarium please. There will be no homework tonight so enjoy the rest of your afternoon." It wasn't always that she didn't give an assignment after a lesson but she felt like today it wasn't completely necessary.

Ten minutes?
Then Jude was lucky that he was done with Benjee’s tank. He suppressed a shudder when Hady mentioned the Reptile Room. Er… he wouldn’t be visiting much. With the exception of checking on Benjee, there would be no need for him to be there. Sure, he was okay with one on one with reptiles but too many in one location? Yeah… no. The Hufflepuff tried not to look too guilty for thinking like that as his cousin came over to him. “Thanks, Hady! I really hope he does!”
When she had moved off, Jude cautiously picked up Benjee who had been lurking a short distance away. Moving slowly, he lowered the Karma Chameleon - now flashing various shades of yellow - onto the soily ground of the tank. “I’ll come visit you. Um, maybe not often but you’ll see me again!” Jude watched as Benjee pattered off, climbing over some rocks in the process to investigate his food bowls. He then scribbled his name and Benjee’s on the card. “Okay, see you around, Professor!” the boy called as he shouldered his bag. With a wave to Hady, he headed back towards the Castle.

Rajesh was just setting up the finishing touches on the tank, all the things a contented snake could need or maybe want, when time was called. “Guess that’s it for now Jafaar,” he remarked, making sure one last time that nothing had filled up with water that wasn’t supposed to be. Including the tank itself. “I’ll be sure to visit of course,” he added as he wrote down both his name and the snake’s that he had chose to be an appropriately fitting name. Coaxing the songsnake off of his arm and into his home before setting the tank where it needed to go and gathering his belongings.
“Thanks for the lesson, Au---Professor Paton” he said, catching himself as he had almost called her aunt. Then with squishing footsteps, he left the area to trudge back up to the castle.
