Default Transfiguration Lesson: TBA

It's a Monday afternoon in mid-December, the last Monday before the winter holiday to be exact. But don't let the upcoming break distract you! You still have classes to get through, and you'll need all your concentration for today's transfiguration lesson.

In stark contrast to the cold, dreary weather outside, the classroom is warm and brightly lit. The first thing students will notice upon entering the classroom is the absence of desks. In their place are several mats neatly arranged in rows in the middle of the room. Two glass walls run along the left and right sides of the room, creating a pocket between the glass and the classroom walls. A new decor choice or something to do with the lesson? Only time will tell.

Professor Carton stands at the front of the room, waiting for the students. Those who are observant will notice that he's standing in front of a door. Should you venture close enough to test the handle, you'll find it locked. "Good afternoon," he greets the arrivals. “Come in and take a seat on the mats.”

OOC: Welcome to transfiguration! Please keep in mind that your student would have had classes with Professor Carton since the beginning of the term IC. Class will begin in 18 -24 HOURS has started.

Lesson Progression:
Q1: how might you use transfiguration to blunt a sharp object?
Main Activity
Prompts #1
Prompst #2
Prompts #3
Q2: how did you do on the activity? Which knives were easy/difficult to transform? What challenges would a moving target present?

Oh yes. Jude was letting the upcoming holidays distract him. After all, there was so much for him to look forward to; stuff that’ll hopefully help him return to his old self. That was all put out of his mind the moment he stepped into the Transfiguration classroom. No desks? Mats? Glass walls? Jude arached a curious eyebrow.

“Good afternoon, professor,’’ the Hufflepuff greeted quietly, his eyes fixed on the door behind the man. There seemed to be a lot of mystery floating about in the classroom presently. All will be revealed soon, right? Jude made his way to a mat somewhere in the middle of the bunch then sat, bringing his knees to his chest. He wrapped his arms around his knees as his attention went over to the glass walls. However, he wasn’t exactly seeing them. His thoughts had already drifted to the upcoming break.

The holidays were SO close and it was ALL Lydia could think about at this point. It seemed like the best idea would be for the professors to just cancel classes for the rest of the week - because who wanted to be in class when Christmas was almost here??? - but apparently this was not an idea they agreed with. Why were adults like this??

But ANYWAY, since classes were still a reality, this third year was here. But the desks were not. Mats? Glass walls?? A mysterious door behind the professor???

Hmm. HMMM. Well, okay, maybe Lydia was a LITTLE curious. Maybe.

"Hi, Professor. I like the redecorating." Way more interesting than having desks. She took a seat on one of the mats, crossing her legs in front of her and hoping her friends would arrive soon.

Violet registered the mats and the absence of desks right away upon entering the room for Transfiguration. Sigh. Another class of sitting on the floor--apparently the professors seemed to think students would like that sort of thing, but as a fully grown-up nineteen-year-old, Violet felt it was undignified. However, needs must. "Hello, Professor Carton," she greeted her teacher, looking curiously at the door behind him but not quite daring to try the handle with the man standing right there. Instead she made her way to one of the mats on the far edge of the room, near enough for her to try to examine one of the glass walls from a distance.

Norman hadn’t been waiting long when Anders arrived. “Good afternoon, Mr. Anders,” he replied with a slight smile, his blue-green eyes following the boy to a mat. Was it just him or did this one seem a bit… distracted? Probably the upcoming holidays. He could somewhat relate. While he wasn’t much for holidays in general, he was looking forward to a quiet celebration with his daughter.

The next arrival also got a smile from Norman. “Hello, Miss Clarke,” he greeted. “Thank you.” He supposed the room layout could be seen as a redecoration, though in this case, it was for function instead of aesthetics. He hoped Clarke would still like it after she heard its intended purpose.

Here was another student looking at the door behind him. Not that Norman minded at all; curiosity was normal. “Hello, Miss Blackthorne,” he replied with a slight smile and polite nod.

As the steady stream of students filing in stopped, Norman’s eyes flicked to his watch. !:00 on the dot, time to get started. He glanced toward the hallway, watching for any last-minute stragglers. When he saw none, he closed the door with a quick flick of his wand and turned to the class. “Let’s get started, shall we?” he said. “I expect we’re all looking forward to the holidays, but it’s very important that you pay attention in class today.” They’d find out why soon enough!

After allowing a moment or two for the students to focus on him, he continued, “Here’s a hypothetical question for you. You happen upon a sharp object. You have no idea how sharp it is or where it came from, so you’re not going to touch it. How might you use transfiguration to blunt it?”

OOC: Class has officially started. Feel free to jump in at any time. Just pretend as if your character has been here all along, unless you want IC consequences for a late arrival. We’ll move on in ABOUT 24 HOURS.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jude barely paid attention to the other students who showed up, so lost in his own world he was. It was only the sound of the closing door that had him coming back to reality, his head tilting in the direction of Carton. A pang of guilt passed through his chest and he tried not to stare too sheepishly at the professor. Okay, Jude was going to pay attention.

The first question was a good way to grab the Hufflepuff’s attention. His mind immediately went to a particular talk about someone being transfigured into a prickly cactus but he did not entertain it. Instead, Jude focused on thinking how he would blunt the sharp object. His hand went up a bit after some time. “By changing it into something completely harmless, much like we use the Riddikulus spell so that Boggarts can take a form we find funny.”

Wait, it had to be a transfiguration spell? Okay, duh this was transfiguration class, after all. "Could just simply vanish it...." Not that Alfred knew that particular spell just yet. Hey, maybe that's what they were learning today? Then again, that wouldn't blunt anything as much as completely get rid of it. Nope, still sticking with that answer. If it was sharp and he couldn't touch it, it would be best just to be rid of it, right?

Violet would have gone with the "completely harmless" idea, but Jude Anders had already said it. After thinking a minute for something else that might work, she offered, "Flatten it?"

Caes was here, just... being here. Not one to make his presence all that noticeable to stay within the crowd. Listening to the question did pique his interest in the subject matter. Looking at each person who answered before he thought of something.

"Maybe.. transfigure it to bend?" Having it at a U shape would be interesting but probably not an easy task.

Karleigh appreciated that class got started right away. She was rather distracted with winter break on her mind and wanting to go home, so it was probably best to refocus her attention before she got too off-track. She listened to the question posed as well as the answer given as she tried to think of a response herself. One that was different so as to not be redundant and repeat something someone else offered.

She raised her hand. "Maybe you could change the property of the material," she said, hoping that the professor would make the distinction between changing the actual object like others said and her answer of changing what the object was made of. "Like if it's made of metal and sharp, it could be transfigured into a soft material." As in, keep the integrity of the shape or object, just change the material.

Spotting the first hand in the air, Norman called on Anders. The answer came as no surprise to him; he knew it was only a matter of time until someone mentioned turning the object into something. “A good comparison, Mr. Anders,” he said, “and correct.”

Here was another answer Norman was unsurprised to hear. While vanishing didn’t technically blunt the object, it was a transfiguration spell and it would solve the problem of a mystery sharp object. So he’d accept it. “You could,” he replied, nodding in agreement. “Thank you, Mr. Devereaux.”

It seemed the class was moving away from the obvious answers, which Norman was glad to hear, Blackthorne’s outside-the-box answer earned an approving nod. “That could work,” he said. “Very good, Miss Blackthorne.”

Here was another answer Norman hadn’t expected! “A creative solution indeed,” he said with a slight smile. “Thank you, Mr. Hawkins.”

Norman’s smile almost turned into a laugh as he heard James’s answer. Of all the things one could turn a sharp object into, he wouldn’t have thought of a potato! “I like your thinking, Miss James,” he replied.

Norman listened carefully to Creed’s answer, nodding along in places. “Ah, yes. Change the object’s material without changing its form, A switching spell would do that,” he said. “Very good, Miss Creed.”

Seeing no more hands in the air, Norman took that as his cue to move on. “Great answers, everyone! All of your ideas would be effective in handling a mystery sharp object, but today we’re going to focus on a spell that, as Mr. Anders suggested, turns a sharp object into something harmless.” And no, it was not a potato! “That spell is Scarpafors, the knives to paper airplanes spell.”

He paused a moment before continuing, “To cast, first you need to visualize the paper airplane you want to create. When you have your idea in mind, flick your wand and say the incantation, Scarpafors. Like so…” He pulled out a plastic butter knife and flicked his wand at it. “Scarpafors!”

In an instant, the butter knife was gone, and in its place was a paper fighter plane. Did everyone get that? Just in case, he demonstrated the spell one more time. With another flick of his wand, the spell information appeared on the chalkboard:

Quote:

While Norman waited for the students to copy down the information, he unlocked the door behind him. “We’re going to practice this spell with a little scavenger hunt,” he said. “Behind this door is a house with four rooms: kitchen, backyard, garage, and study. Inside you’ll find several different types of knives to transfigure. These are types of knives that one might encounter in everyday life; they are not weapons and are not sharp enough to harm you.” He hoped that last bit would be enough to ease the students’ minds!

“You’ll start in one room,” he continued. “It doesn’t matter which one. Find all of the knives hidden in the room and turn them into paper airplanes. When you’ve transfigured all of the knives in that room, you may move on to another room. The goal is to find and transfigure all the knives in all the rooms before time runs out. You’ll have thirty minutes, starting… NOW!”

With that, Norman opened the door and stood to one side.

OOC: Main activity time! As Norman explained, your character needs to find and transfigure the knives in the house. The knives ARE NOT sharp, so there should be no rping of injuries! You can start in any of the four areas (kitchen, backyard, garage, or study), but please title your posts with the room your character is currently in. I’ll be posting prompts periodically, so please DO NOT rp the outcome of your character’s spells. Group/partner work is allowed. You’ll have AT LEAST 72 HOURS for this activity. Feel free to PM me with any questions!

Default The Study

Violet took a few minutes to practice the incantation under her breath--the emphasis on the second syllable was a bit tricky--before grasping her wand in hand and heading toward the door to the "house." Walking through it, she found herself in what must be the study. Bother! How many knives were there likely to be in a study, after all? Still, there must be at least some here, or Professor Carton wouldn't have included it.

Deciding that the desk was the best place to start, Violet walked over to it and, after briefly looking around the desktop, began rummaging around in the drawers. Sure enough, right in the top drawer, she found a small knife, the kind you used for cutting the pages of a book. "Scar-PAH-fors!" she said, trying to get the pronunciation right, and flicked her wand at the little knife, then stood back to watch whether it would change.

Very creative ideas there. Jude particularly liked Kinsay’s of turning the object into a potato. It was funny to think about and actually would be a helpful thing to do. Oh, hey there! He’d actually hit the nail on the head with his own idea. The realisation brought a happy smile to the fifth year’s face.

Knives to paper airplane spell! That sounded exciting. Jude watched the demonstration before copying down the information. As Carton explained about the activity, the Hufflepuff eyed the door. So that’s what was behind there. Already he knew where he wanted to start.

“Scar-PAH-fors. Scar-PAH-fors. Scarpafors.” That seemed easy enough. There were a few flicks of his wand and he was ready to take on the knives in the kitchen. Through the door the fifth year went. Locating the kitchen, he paused there to take a good look around. There was a shiny and pointy knife sitting right on a table next to a cutting board! It was to be his first victim.

“Scarpafors.’’ Cue the flick of his wand.

Turning a mysterious knife into a paper airplane seemed to be an unexpected but interesting method to handle the object. Jocelyn listened to the instructions and watched Professor Carton’s demonstration carefully, and took notes on the spell information. Transfiguration was turning out to be one of her strongest subjects, and she particularly enjoyed the process of visualising the object she wanted to create. Although the spell they were learning today did not sound easy, she hoped to cast it successfully after some practice.

Also, she LOVED scavenger hunts. When the thirty minutes began, she headed into the “house” and looked around. In spite of what the professor said about the knives being not sharp, she imagined it would still be rather frightening to see a bunch of knives lying around, especially in rooms that already had the potential to be the setting for a horror movie, like the garage. She decided to go out and start in the sunny backyard.

Once there, Jo quickly found a knife beside the waste bin. Now, what was the incantation again? She checked her notebook once, and flicked her wand at the knife on the ground while visualising a typical paper airplane. “Scarpafors!”

Your careful pronunciation has paid off! The small knife transforms, and in an instant, a paper airplane appears in its place. Starting at the desk was a wise idea, but don’t get so distracted by the drawers that you ignore the top of the desk itself. Sitting in plain sight are a pen knife and a letter opener. After your early success with the spell, these should be easy, right?

In a flash, the knife transforms into a paper airplane, a slightly lopsided one but a paper airplane nonetheless. If you look to the other side of the cutting board, you’ll notice a knife block, which contains three kitchen knives similar to the one you’ve just transfigured. You know what to do!

Good job spotting the knife beside the waste bin! The knife on the ground morphs as you flick your wand, becoming a shape something between a knife and a paper airplane. You’re on the right track. How about trying one more time?

OOC: Sorry for the delay... had a dental procedure today! Please ocntinue to title your posts with the room. You still have AT LEAST 48 HOURS.

Well, that worked! Violet had kind of hoped the paper airplane would fly around the room or something, but she supposed that would be over-kill. Sitting back to look more carefully at the top of the desk itself (now that she had checked the drawers for knives, and interesting papers), Violet now noticed that there was a pen knife lying there in plain sight. "Scarpafors." she flicked her wand at it, repeating her earlier incantation. Then she noticed the letter opener. Was that a knife? Well, it sort of was one. "Scarpafors!" she cast at it, just in case.

Maybe there was hope for him and his spellwork yet! Nevermind the fact that his plane was lopsided; it would do. Jude admired the plane for a bit because hey, that was his handiwork. He just needed to improve the look of the planes because that was partially the goal of the lesson right?

There were more knives in the knife block which he only just noticed. Three to be exact. The Hufflepuff took a breath and tried to clear his brain a bit so that all his focus {or most of it anyway} could hone in on the task at hand.

“Scarpafors.’’ There was a flick of his wand at knife-in-the-block one.

“Scarpafors.’’ There was a flick of his wand at knife-in-the-block two.

“Scarpafors.’’ There was a flick of his wand at knife-in-the-block three.

Um… he could have turned all three into planes at once, couldn’t he? Jude wasn’t ready for that level of intensity as yet because he definitely wanted to practice on single knives to get a proper hang of the spell. But maybe if he had a similar opportunity again, he would take it.

No, the paper airplanes don’t fly around the room by themselves, though a levitation charm could be used for that purpose. Some other time perhaps?

Your spell practice is paying off! The pen knife transforms into a paper airplane, this one a little sleeker than the one you transfigured earlier. Good call on casting on the letter opener as well! It does indeed count as a knife. It also transforms, becoming a paper airplane nearly identical to the other one on the desk. Congratulations on finding all of the knives in the study! You’re free to move on to the next room.

Your spellwork is showing clear signs of improvement. All three of the knives in the block transform, becoming paper airplanes of varying shapes and sizes. The first one, while a tad bulky, is even on both sides. The second one is a little thinner and sleeker than the first. By the third try, you’ve managed to produce a nearly perfect paper airplane.

Farther along the kitchen counter is a butter dish with a butter knife propped against it. Care to try the spell one more time?

Norman watched from the doorway as the students went about their activity. So far, he was pleased with what he saw. There were promising signs of progress and no major mishaps or shenanigans, which, at the end of the day, was the best any Hogwarts professor could hope for.

Turning his attention away from the door momentarily, he glanced at his watch and saw that time was winding down. “Keep up the good work!” he called to the students. “We’ll move on in about ten minutes.”

OOC: You still have 24-36 HOURS left.

Well…

It was the practice that counted? Jude found himself chuckling as he surveyed his three planes. They were cute and funny at the same time and it was the bulky one that won his heart. Yes, imperfect as it was, it still was perfect to him. The other two weren’t bad either. Hearing Carton giving them a time check, he quickly ended his break and scurried along. Maybe this time around he’d produce a perfect plane. Fingers crossed!

The butter dish on the counter caught that gaze of his. Naturally there was a butter knife there. Great! It meant he could focus all his energies on producing a proper plane without having to spend too much time searching.

“Scarpafors.’’ Jude confidently flicked his wand at the knife and made sure he put his full focus into the task.

The spell worked, but only partially. If this were a real sharp knife in a real backyard and she had transformed it into THIS - a half-knife, half-paper airplane, it would still have a sharp edge and still be super dangerous. Would it complete the full change if she tried one more time?

Jo cleared her throat and flicked her wand a second time. Having half a paper airplane before her did seem to have some use, as it helped her to visualise and concentrate on the image of the object she wanted. “Scarpafors!” she repeated.

You know how the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. And your spellwork is a living example! The butter knife transforms, leaving a perfectly symmetrical paper airplane in its place.

A quick search of the area will reveal no more knives to be found. Congratulations! You've completed the kitchen. You're now free to move on to the next room.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. In this case, that many tries won't be necessary. Your visualization and concentration pay off. This time, the knife completes the transformation into a paper airplane. It leans a little awkwardly to one side, but a paper airplane is a paper airplane!

If you look to your left, you'll see two toy daggers propped against a shady tree. Looks like those could use a bit of transfiguration!

Violet gave one last look around the study for knives, but didn't see any more. She was kind of tempted to try flying one of the paper airplanes around the room with a levitation spell, but she needed to get on with class. Besides, she heard the professor give the ten minute warning, so she'd better get going to the next room.

Which turned out to be...the kitchen! Well, there ought to be plenty of knives in here. Violet headed for the counter, where she thought she saw a butcher block holding a whole set of knives. "Scar-PA-fors!" she cast, flicking her wand one, two, three, four times at each of the four knives in the block.

Next, she started opening drawers--napkins and towels and potholders, ladles and forks and spoons, silverware, and...hold on--third drawer had silverware, and silverware usually included knives! Yes, there were seven knives in the little knife slot--blunt bread knives, it was true, but still knives (could you really cut yourself on one of those? Violet decided to try transfiguring them all just the same). Seven scarpafors later and Violet was done with the silverware (but--there should be eight knives in the drawer, judging by the number of other utensils--Violet wondered what had happened to the eighth one?) Not finding it in the drawer, Violet began searching on the rest of the countertops and tables and poking around the sink and dish drainer.

Okay but this was the best lesson today!

It was exactly what the Hufflepuff boy needed to boost his mood; he now felt as though his life was coming back together. He smiled to himself, mostly in relief as he took in the perfect plane. If he kept this sort of focus up, it meant that he would be able to do himself proud at OWLs.

Jude did another look around, his fingernails glistening with bright cyan nail polish as they pulled out draws, checked the fridge and other places for knives. However, none could be found. A glance at his watch told him that the ten minutes Carton had announced was almost up. Maybe Jude would have a minute in another room?

He started for the study.

The four knives in the block transform one after another. Soon there are four identical paper airplanes in their place. Good call on searching the drawers! Indeed the seven bread knives there are still knives, blunt as they may be. As you cast the spell each time, the knife morphs into a paper airplane until there are seven of them in the drawer.

As you search for the eighth knife, you notice something silvery glinting behind the dish drainer. Could it be-? It is! If you pull out the drainer, you’ll find the final knife has fallen behind it.

He started for the study.
As you enter the study, the first thing you’ll notice is a wooden desk in the middle of the room. Closer inspection will reveal a quill pen and inkwell sitting atop the desk. Just to the right of the pen is a small pen knife. Looks like the perfect thing to transfigure!

After a few minutes, Norman checked his watch again and saw it was time to move on. “Alright, time is up!” he called. “Come back to the classroom now, please.”

He moved away from the door, standing in front of the chalkboard as he waited for the students to return. When the last person had arrived, he addressed the class, “Now that you’ve had some practice with Scarpafors, it’s time for a little reflection. How do you think you did on the scavenger hunt? Was there a type of knife that you found particularly easy ro difficult to transfigure? What additional challenges do you think a moving target would present?”

OOC: Question 2 is up! For this one, your character can answer any/all of the three questions Norman asked for credit. If you didn’t do the activity, your character can give their guess which types of knives would be easy or hard to transfigure. We’ll move on in ABOUT 24 HOURS.
